i have always wanted to like this recording more than i do. it is all nicely sung and all... and lord knows that is a feat in itself. BUT... if curious and not familiar with... go find the 1974 video from Orange or the in house taped performance from the Bolshoi ... same year, i think. Caballé is on fire vocally and dramatically in both. the production used by the Bolshoi seems to be that ugly thing from La Scala.. no big deal.. they all transcend it. if not the entire show, watch at least from 'in mia man' to the end. She moves absolutely with the music - great operatic acting for this style. the hands at the end with Oroveso - if she has not already knocked you out with the drama of her singing by that point... her reaching to him, pleading the safety of her children should do it. this commercial recording above is nice. the two i mention - sublime.

Comincia un po wagneriana, ma poi cambia col lungo pianissimo alla fine. Solo lei può cantare questi pianissimi, come la preghiera in Maria Stuarda. Wagner disse che se venisse la fine Del mondo e si potesse salvare solo una cosa, si dovrebbe salvare il Finale di Norma. Nella sua musica ci sono echi Di Norma. Sutherland was never able to sing la Norma properly and Tebaldi did not even try. The only Norma after Callas was Caballé. And, apart fron her, only Gencer delivered a decent Norma in the second half of the twentieth century.
