- The Tiny Desk is working from home for the foreseeable future. Introducing NPR Music's Tiny Desk (home) concerts, bringing you performances from across the country and the world. It's the same spirit - stripped-down sets, an intimate setting - just a different space.

Flock of Dimes may be a "solo" project for Wye Oak's Jenn Wasner, but she couldn't pass up an opportunity to invite a few friends over. You'll spot their familiar faces all over this video: Mountain Man's Amelia Randall Meath, Molly Sarlé and Alexandra Sauser-Monnig, percussionist Matthew McCaughan from Bon Iver... you even get full attendance from Sylvan Esso, given that Meath is seated alongside her partner Nick Sanborn. (He doesn't play in the set, but he did co-produce Flock of Dimes' latest album, so Wasner asked him to sit in and bring a book to read.)
The result is a communal set - filmed at Sylvan Esso's new studio in Durham, N.C., called Betty's - that doesn't merely re-create three of the songs from this year's Head of Roses. These acoustic performances actually shed new light, thanks to radiant and radically different arrangements, while fully capturing the warmth we look for from Tiny Desk concerts. (Plus, with nine people in the frame, it's a cast large enough that when they clap between songs, they almost sound like a crowd.)

It's weird that they've perfectly captured the vibe of just a group of friends having fun together, but with the skill and finish of a group of professional musicians. I mean, I suppose those things aren't mutually exclusive, to be professional musicians and to have fun with your friends, but I just mean it's so rare to see those two things at once, like in this performance.

I'm not surprised how amazing this is, literally everything this crew puts out is heart wrenchingly beautiful and inspiring... What I am surprised about is how casually Nick is just chilling in the midst of the magic while catching up on some reading.
This reminds me of the Roches in the best way possible. How blessed are we to still have fantastic music makers in this era? You just have to know where to look and where to listen.

It's now much further into 2021 and I stand by the comment I posted when these songs were first released, I'm almost certain this is going to be my favorite album of the year.

pretty sure there is a really really old one. It's not posted any more but if you search tiny desk and wye oak clips from it still show up. Not sure why NPR unlists really old tiny desk concerts but there's quite a few I remember that I don't see posted any more.

This makes me long to be back in North Carolina ever so badly. In this is captured the spirit, beauty, and depth of those ever flowing rolling hills, the majestic trees soaring in great heights, and such kind and warm people. One day I will return to this beautiful land.

Saw her open for Sylvan Esso when she was touring her first album. Was already a fan from her Wye Oak stuff but man she’s great live, did it all solo with a drum machine, no fancy lights or anything just rocked it. Biggest regret was we had a chance to meet her but if we moved we would’ve lost our standing spot for Sylvan Esso and the Paladium was packedddd that night so didn’t want to risk it, btw they also insanely killed that show, probably best night we’ve seen live in LA besides seeing Tennis for free back when they were literally unknown and played a small set when Pasadena would shut down Colorado blvd for their annual summer music fest. God I hate Covid. Don’t sleep on Tennis either if you get a chance to see them.
