Black Pumas: Tiny Desk (Home) Concert
Вставка
- Опубліковано 9 чер 2024
- The Tiny Desk is working from home for the foreseeable future. Introducing NPR Music's Tiny Desk (home) concerts, bringing you performances from across the country and the world. It's the same spirit - stripped-down sets, an intimate setting - just a different space.
Dec. 7, 2020 | Felix Contreras -- The Austin-based rock band Black Pumas is having a good 2020. The group, led by singer Eric Burton and guitarist Adrian Quesada, was just nominated for three Grammys, including album of the year for Black Pumas (Deluxe Edition), and both record of the year and best American roots performance for the track "Colors." The band's turn behind a tiny desk (and chair) shows why its debut album - now more than a year old - is receiving so much recognition right now.
Black Pumas' gritty, retro-soul groove is on full display, while the intensity level builds gradually throughout this four-song set. It's clear why the band's live shows have won over fans. From the opening strains of "Red Rover," Burton digs deep and by the time we get to the ballad "OCT 33," he's burning with old-school soul heartbreak.
Quesada's guitar is the perfect call-and-response foil, while the entire band - complete with two powerful back-up singers - calls to mind soul classics, but with a groovy new sheen.
I've seen some of Black Pumas' shows in recent years and the band gets better every time out. The power of this Tiny Desk (home) concert shows that they always bring it, no matter the size of the audience.

I'm in my 70's and sometimes think that there's no more great music being recorded. Then I hear a cut from the Black Pumas and my faith is restored!
Love the Black Pumas. They have help me get through Covid. Shout out to Gary Clark Jr. He introduce the group on a interview last year, and BAM, the sound was intoxicating.
70's yep. Power sound.
Great music is still being made. Love this band. The ladies have that great Brides of Funkenstein/Paulette sound.
Yes
I'm 10 years behind you... and I totally agree. The music these folks put out gives me the chills.
THIS, is what I've been missing! 64 yrs old and your music makes me feel 20 again. Socially conscious, thoughtful, soul moving music.
KEEP THIS BAND TOGETHER! We need you.

Good lord. The recorded versions of these are terrific, but when you sound this good live, you're in another league. This is so fantastic
You literally took the words right out of my mouth!
This is why tiny desk is so good. it shows the bands who can really pull it off.
Agreeeeed!

Seeing Black Pumas when live music returns is essentially now a life goal of mine.
I missed them last year after they got invited to some award show and had to postpone, until covid cancelled it for good 😩 good luck to you realizing that goal !
Seen them 2 years ago in Austin, by far the single best performance I’ve ever seen ever.
Hopefully, I will see them in November in London if COVID allows
@@RB64190 you

Eric is such an incredible singer! I swear to God this man is talking to my soul. I wish nothing but success for them.
They've invented a time machine powered by the good spirited ghosts of the 60s, 70s, and 80s.
For sure!
Word
We ❤️ this
Not the 80’s
I'm gettin sum Jimi Hendrix vibes from this, especially the vocal style of the main singer. Totally diggin this \m/
They deserve to win a Grammy without doubt
Your too kind!
They are nominees for 2020🙂
@@BlackPumas seriously yes sir!
They were robbed!
@@LAVirgo67 I think they were definitely "robbed" for record of the year, but I'm not mad about Billie Eilish!
This has got to be one of the best bands out there making music right now. Just gorgeous! I can listen to the Pumas for hours on end. Please keep writing more music!!
Colors is without a doubt one of my favourite tracks of all time, so much soul.
All right, I'm starting to appreciate these Tiny desk concerts from home.
Black Pumas have a great production quality on their live concerts.
Did it seriously take you this long??
@@ValiantTono For real, It took me time to move on from the intimacy of the tiny desk background.
@@ChakFournier Oh wait, you meant THEIR home. My bad lol
Right!? Sometimes it's like a Tiny Home concert 😅
One of my favorite bands of the last year.
Wasn't ready to spot Rhett Shull outside of guitar UA-cam 👋 🎸
Rhett did you happen to tour with them with Noah?
Could definitely see you in this band
So good. Love the vibe. Also! Great videos dude
Rhett I’m trying to replace my Fulltone 69 fuzz for obvious reasons. What’s something you recommend along that line? Loved the fuzz video
Oct 33 is amazing. Eric just transports me somewhere else....
When you hear a song for the first time, yet it feels as though the song has been a part of your life forever. That is where the magic is. Love Black Pumas
The Tiny Desk we were missing
This made my night
This band knows well how to set up a nice mood.
❤️
all dislikes are Teejay's scam bots
The vibe of this band is what we all need right now. This should be EVERYWHERE!!!
Curtis Mayfield, Cream, Deep Purple... it's all in there. Nice work!
I hope Quentin Tarantino is watching...
Django 2? Would be perfect i think
@@jeanpiermn5228 that would be perfect 👌🏻
that was my first thought!

Every time Colors starts… pure goosebumps.
This is just about as silky smooth as it gets. Dang. I can’t quit the black pumas.

Bought tickets to their European tour - flying whenever it's safe to go! I miss going to concerts.
Black Pumas, so modern their sound is historic!
Yea Tranel! I grew up listening to a lotta music like this. Glad i found them.
The Black Pumas are real musicians, real vocalists from our younger generation. Their cd is absolutely amazing and grooving. They need and like Citizen Cope, deserve much more airplay!
Pure nostalgia and rare. I mean this band captures that lightning in a bottle and serves the chills. I love them.
The ghost of Issac Hays, Curtis Mayfield, Marvin Gaye, Donny Hathaway....
true dat
❤️
Let’s not forget Charles “ the screaming eagle “ Bradley ✌🏼
Yeah curtis mayfield.
just the human of Eric Burton
blessed the day that youtube recommend me BlackPumas for the first time, they were starting, and now 3 grammy nominations lets go
SO much respect for a band that sounds this great in a live performance.
Wow ,.as a 1970's baby I missed Jimmy Hendrix and all that great era but this band is creating an era of their own.. ROCKING IT 😜😀
Every time Eric talks it just blows my mind. Such a powerful singer, yet so softspoken with a gentle disposition.
One of the best performances EVER at Tiny Desk! Sooo good...
Thanks for the ❤️
23 minutes ago I had never heard of this band... now I am a fan and I have already told all my friends! Amazing Jams!
Yeah they are awesome colors is one of my two favorite songs to paint to lol. The other is sound and color from Alabama Skakes check them out. You will love it.
Don't you love when that happens...opens up your world sonically...I am discovering them as we speak and I am amazed 😍
I hadn't heard of this band until today. I went looking for the song that I heard playing on the Target commercial. When I listened to it, I found myself subscribing immediately, and watching a bunch of other videos. And of course I shared it.
Oct 33 (live version) is currently getting the most play time on my chill playlist.
SAME!!!
The inauguration brought me and I’m HERE. FOR. IT !!!
I used to think that all the good music is gone, but suddenly this great band appeared. This is what real music is all about... !
This man drips with swagger
Colors is one of the best songs out of the past decade, love this whole band so much 🙌
Thanks for the ❤️
Black Pumas: one of the greatest news bands. A beautiful reminder that is not all and only Pop single acts and that new good bands are still out there making great music and breaking into the mainstream. More of them, more of this, please
Who else is here after seeing them perform during the inauguration?
I just love tiny desk tbh. Didn't know they performed at the inauguration, great to hear that they did!
Colbert brought me here. I am blown away.
My mom asked if this band was blind because of all the shades, told her it was just a precaution to block out all the heat.
😎
My phone can't control the amount of heat coming from this music!!! 🎶
😎
I had on shades to help for the heat and to block the lighting... 😊😁

Thank god that people keeping the soul and rnb alive.. so much feel that missing these days, thank you :)
what a funkalicious snack, so glad I stumbled across this band.
this is not a music video, this is a masterpiece!
Adrian and JaRon with the absolutely MIND MELTING solos in "Colors" oh my lord...
Coming from a drummer, this drummer is brilliant...great pocket playing, dynamics, precision, etc...props
This is one of the best live performances I've ever heard. The sound reminds me a bit of Curtis Mayfield, but it's so much more than soul and funk revival. There is strong rock here as well. Who could possibly dislike?
I literally CANNOT get enough of them! This is the first band I will travel to see after the pandemic. Hopefully at a festival out in the sun!
Did you saw them ?
There's no way you can honestly dislike this beautiful and soulful music. This is incredible. Instant fan!
First discovered Black Pumas at the airport....I missed my flight just to hear the rest of the song. Best decision ever.
Same!!!! Airport part not the missing flight part.
❤️
@@yourndeep your so honest to not make up a love story right there it’s pretty admirable
This is to have passion for music. This is to die in each song. This is true soul. Just amazing.
This guitar solo on "Colors" gave me chills.
Doesn't look like tiny desk but it doesn't matter, I love anything from Black Pumas.
Lot of love and blues power.
Thanks for this amazing presentation!
Thanks for watching!
Its tiny desk "from home"
Was waiting for this like my life depends on it!
We're glad you're here
So grateful to discover this group. This fills an Alabama Shakes sized hole for me.
Uuufffffff!!!! the only bad thing about this is that they have not had a live audience to applaud them wildly!!!! Que tremendos!!!!!
can we take a moment to give it up for these fly sistahs!
Wish I could give it two thumps up!!!
YES CLAP FOR THE AUNTIES!!!!!
Yes! 💓💓
this is now my favorite new band.. a black lead singer, a mexican lead guitarist arranger producer, an afrolatina and a black woman on backup vocals, a black keyboardplayer and two white guys holding down the drums and bass.. the youth need to see and hear this.. this is american unity.. and whats cool is his name eric burton, is like eric burdon, who was a lead singer for the animals and a 60s rock soul blues legend..
I want hugs from them both
i love October 33. It has a really nice feel
Very proud of having the talent Adrian quesada and he's Mexicano 😍😍
When he says "help me feel the love here, man"... Gosh, you can really feel it. Amazing
The Pianist is too cool !!! 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
This must be how people in the 70s felt when a classic album dropped. I didn't even know music could be this good anymore. 🖤
Great observation. And you're correct. The 70s was such a great era for music. Record stores were a trip. Concerts were cheap, like 5 dollars, and they normally featured at least 2 bands, sometimes 3.
Black Pumas are fantastic.
70s, 80s, and 90s. Occasionally the opposite would happen. Then you would just want to take the record out, and throw it like a frisbee. But when you got something great you spent time with it like a new best friend. This band sounds like a new best friend.
Haha!
Still some real ARISTS/MUSICIANS out there. You wouldn't know it by watching mainstream media BUT thank God they are still out there. 🖤🔥
It was a coincidence to have heard the music of Black Pumas, a great combination of sounds of both the instruments and the vocalization. They're amazing.
The backing vocals on oct 33 just totally mesmerize me. Absolutely beautiful.
I knew from the first few notes that this was going to be great.
This version of Colours is something else! What a performance
Fire is just one of the best songs EVER
And the others are not far away at all

Peace and Love from India to The Black Pumas and thank you NPR.
Takes me back to my old days... "Drown in my own tears", "Love and Happiness", "Pain in my Heart", Ray Charles' "Shake a Tail Feather"... some heavy reggae beats & sounds, and oh so many more! Those beats & sounds will never get old.
Burton has that timeless-star quality. Gonna be interesting to follow these guys
Not only can he sing, he actually entertains - band on point too
He has a versatile voice and he seems like he is such a gentleman. I am liking what they are bringing. Just say yes to the Black Pumas!!!
Black Pumas are the best thing to happen to this world over the past few years.
Grammy nominated!! Can't wait to see what they do next

@@BlackPumas Just letting you folks know, I just got my tickets to the March 24th concert at Bogotá, see you there
It doesn’t get any better than this! A musical resurrection.
This band is my new favorite. Groovy, soulful, imaginative, transcending and positive. It's what I wish church music could sound like!
Eric Burton is a great vocalist. He and Adrian finding each other was just about the best thing that could have happened for American music.

There is nothing more to say, Great Band, Great Music.
Black pumas are the ones to watch...they gonna be rocking every where.🎼🎶👑🌟👏👏🎤
I absolutely can't wait until COVID is done and over with, and we all can see Black Pumas, live and concert.
THANK YOU, UA-cam algorithm! You came through on this one. Never heard of them, but decided to click....and the performance punched me dead in my chest!
That was great. Specially Colors. This will be a song you’ll still want to and will be hearing in 20; 30, ... years from now, a definite classic.
They are so money! Funk Motown, modern old. It’s just a great vibe. Musicians for sure
You had me at Black Pumas 💗👌from 🇿🇦
the fact that some instruments mixed together can make me cry is kinda crazy
It's so powerful. I saw this 30 times and always makes my eyes get wet....
It's cos they use onions instead of picks/plectrums
Can't believe that The Black Pumas have been off my radar for this long. By chance, Russel Peters highly recommended them while making an appearance on Your Mom's House podcast, and I'm glad he did...an excellent find for me, personally. The guys a SUPER talented. Hoping The Pumas continue to get all the exposure they deserve.
Part of my soul has been dead since Sharon Jones left this earth. I now feel reborn! getting my inner Marvin Gaye on! looking forward to seeing you live some day.
Can we normalize this type of black energy in our community please !!! 🔥
I want to cover this!!!

Yes please!
Man! This guy on the keys!!! Amazing final solo!!
He was very unimpressed when he was introduced though. Lol
That guitar solo thooo..... This was amazing start to finish, but on "Colors" omg that dude shredded.
