    Since you’re covering up the shingles anyway and changing the color it would probably be best to put a coat of oil based paint primer on the roof first. They’re really good at blocking chemicals from coming through and discoloring your top coat.

    As a paint contractor I see 2 problems with this job. Silicone does not adhere well to Asphalt- based shingles. Also the yellow of the roof coating will come though the second coat too. That is the tar base reacting to the silicone. They make this roof coating in a asphalt base too, maybe not white but silver. Time will tell.

      Henry has grey, tan and white but no black. If you use black your roof will be really HOT!

    How old were your shingles? How many coats did you put on.

      The shingles were about a year old and I put one coat of the white Tropi-Cool on.

      @@Handywoman Do you have any idea what the sq ft coverage per gallon is that stuff is expensive and I was hoping to do my entire roof.(About 3000 sq ft.) Thanks

    • @Handywoman
      @Handywoman  4 місяці тому

      It is expensive! About 100 sq. ft. per gallon per coat.

      @@rickl6697 I did my 1000 sq. ft. roof with it a year ago. It was over old tar and gravel roof but I removed all the gravel. It worked great, looks great a year later. I went with this exact product, the 100% silicone. There are cheaper versions which I can't vouch for. It will keep your house cooler. We only used our a/c three times this summer, when the temps got up over 100 degrees outside, so it's already paid for about 1/4 it's cost, which I estimate at about $4000 with multiple coatings and tool rentals (mostly for removing the gravel). Make sure to fix any problems with your roof (leaks, namely) before doing the coating. It's super messy. I used a big 18" roller to apply it.

    The manufacturer states not to use this coating on shingles.

    • @Handywoman
      @Handywoman  Місяць тому +1

      Ok
      I wanted to see what would happen, if I used it on shingles. This roof is so tiny that I thought that it would be a good experiment. It covered the shingles really well.

    • @DennisMartins-pp7ry
      @DennisMartins-pp7ry 7 днів тому

      That's because they slip alot after drying, but there is no better way to bullet proof your shingles.
      The manufacturer states that so dumb people don't decide to make it a ice skating rink and then try to sue for plain stupidity.
      You did great, looks great, you will never get another leak there for sure, and that is awesome feeling.
      IF YOU DECIDE TO DO A WHOLE ROOF WITH THIS MAKE SURE YOU HAVE IMPROVED AIR FLOW UNDER THE ROOF SHEATHING SO MOISTURE ESCAPES THROUGH A GOOD RIDGE VENT AND ADDITIONAL OPENINGS OR A ROOF POWER VENT SO NO MOISTURE DISTURBS THE SHEETING INTEGRITY.
      YOU WILL HAVE A ROOF FOR A LIFE TIME.
      BEAT THE SYSTEM BY NOT HAVING TO SPEND EXAGERATED MONEY TO REPLACE ALL THE SHINGLES IF YOUR ROOF HAS NO ROTTED WOOD SHEATHING.
