definitely one of my fave albums, the whole album is a master class. I've had people react to Velvet Green (live and studio) and Pibroch and let's just say not everyone gets it.
Once in Royal David's City Stood a lonely cattle shed Where a mother held her baby You'd do well to remember the things he later said When you're stuffing yourselves at the Christmas parties You'll just laugh when I tell you to take a running jump You're missing the point I'm sure does not need making That Christmas spirit is not what you drink So how can you laugh when your own mother's hungry? And how can you smile when the reasons for smiling are wrong? And if I just messed up your thoughtless pleasures Remember, if you wish, this is just a Christmas song (Hey! Santa! Pass us that bottle, will you?)
Love that you guys reacted to this gem, Jethro Tull rules and the whole album it is from - Songs From The Wood - is fantastic. Please keep listening to Jethro Tull.
Love this song.....the irony is.....this is called a xmas song yet it is full of Pagan references and traditions. The solstice falls on December 21st and was celebrated way,way before Christianity!!!! 25th December was a convenient way of converting the masses to a new religion. History lesson over.....its a cool tune🤟
The bells near the end are Tubular Bells. There is an album by that name from the mid 70's by Mike Oldfield. Definitely worth a listen and a reaction if you like that old school prog. Tull has a Christmas album that is not bad, for a Christmas album.😜
I am not much for Christmas songs, unless rock orientated, and Ian Anderson and Jethro Tull are great for that. Checkout Ian Anderson is again this year doing a Jethro Tull Christmas Concert series around select English cathedrals. Thanks for the video, another great upload and reaction.
There's a song by "Manfred Mann's Earth Band" called "Be Not Too Hard" (which is a phenomenal song of course) off "The Good Earth" album (which is an excellent album too) and at the end of "Be Not To Hard" the tubular bell melody they're playing is out of this world.
Thanks for reacting to this Suzy & Travis - I love this track and play it every Advent & Christmas, it's not often played on the radio. Ring out these bells!
Top of the Pops was a MAJOR gig for bands in the seventies. Get on there and your sales would triple. Ian Anderson, however, is a performer, and the studio managers want acts to stay still. He has said that he looked back over his early appearances and, during rehearsals he would stand stock still. When it came to the actual show - which was live (recorded track but live broadcast) with an audience - he would be all over the place, disappearing and reappearing briefly, but rarely in shot.
Lovely track! A very young Ian Anderson there... I hope you picked up they were miming - the video is from the BBC's "Top of the Pops" TV show c. early 1970's. TOTP always wanted to play the studio version, so bands had to act singing. JT did a decent job there - though some bands fluffed the act & clearly were not in time with themselves, with an occasional rare "we're doing XYZ whilst you hear the song" which always looked strange.
Great songs on that album. Try the instrumentals, Greensleeved, We Five Kings, and God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen in place of the usual songs to pep up the solstice party!
You guys are gonna do the rest of the album right?! Like the requester, I grew up on Jethro Tull on LPs (except in the mid to late 90s) but I really didn't get into this album until 2007 or 2008, at a really good time for it. There's a lot to love about Jethro Tull and its members, including flute-playing Ian Anderson. I love this whole album, but if you want something with a harder edge you can do anything off Aqualung (great live performances) and especially there's a popular live version of My God that other reactors have done. I'm a come-here-for-the-Sabaton-but-stay-for-the-Tull kinda guy.
While so much Christmas music is quite forgettable, and dozens of them are played ad-nauseum by every country, pop, and assorted singer, this is better music than about 99% of the traditional holiday music out there. I don’t ever need to hear Paul McCartney Wonderful Christmas Time ever again. But, this one…bring it on!
hard to like lip syncing, no matter where it occurs, whether 1970's TV or 2020's concerts. There's enough live Tull footage out there, rather than this silliness.
From the incomparable _Songs from the Wood_ album. You can't go wrong with anything from SftW.
The best Tull album... love Ians look during this era...

@@Ferretbomber Best Lineup of all, Ian, Martin, Dave, Barrie and John. All of those albums were just On.
Tell your mother that you walked all night on Velvet Green
Tull has an excellent winter album, and as always it's an alternative take of the season.
This is always on in my home every winter solstice. Beautiful!

1973
They're called tubular bells. Mike Oldfield built 3 albums around them (Including the theme from The Exorcist).

This was a Solstice song, not a Christmas song. Note the line about druids

The Earth Band should have been massive👍

He's a master of showmanship !! I've seen Tull 23 times !
Just past the 2022 Winter Solstice . . . Really my first intro to old English history. Way back, but the impact has stayed.

It is sort of half live when it is miming to an album track. This was one of the worst because the flute parts were not mimed, only the vocals
Top of pois....que programa...saudade
Always a pleasure to experience a bit of Tull. I recommend you check out "The Whistler" for some more energetic Tull brilliance. 👏👏👏👏
The one and only Ian Anderson and Tull - fabulous stuff. Great choice of song for the month of December. Thanks for the reaction:)
Best Christmas song ever!

Keep diggin' on those great 70s bands!
Jethro Tull is it's own rabbit hole

Just came across this… Ian Anderson is great. Check out Ian with Greg lake from ELP doing Father Christmas live. Great for this time of year.

Not in my top 150 Tull tracks.
More pagan celebration than xmas
