Home Economics: Living Off the Farm
Вставка
- Опубліковано 2 жов 2012
- When Virginia Yoder and her husband Emerson began to farm on their 50 acre property, near Molalla, Oregon, in the mid to late 1940's, America's food supply was still bound tightly to the seasons. Canning and preserving food was a common practice to insure not only an adequate annual supply of food for farm families, but also a way to eat fruits, vegetables, and certain meats that otherwise would be more limited in their availability.
Farm wives played an important role on the farm by cooking the meals, and attending to a wealth of other household responsibilities. In addition to rearing children, the farmer's wife would typically tend the food gardens, and put up food for longterm storage.
In this video, Virginia Yoder provides a fascinating glimpse into a way of life that has largely vanished from the American landscape. And, at age 84, she continues growing and preserving food to help meet her long-term food needs.

For anyone watching, She is an amazing lady. She is the widow if my Grandmothers cousin Emerson, so she is family and is very sweet and she really is as you see her. Boy can she cook and her pies are amazing. My wife and daughters adore her She lives near Molalla Oregon about 45 minuets north of Salem and is kind to everyone
This was amazing! What a great person. I laughed as she peaked out the door to ask if the crew wanted some tomatoes to take with them! Makes me miss my grandmothers.
This video makes me very sad for this lady, I feel terrible she lost her husband, but I'm glad to see she's very active and knowledgeable.
I really miss my grandparents and other elderly people that were in my life; I’ll always appreciate and remember their wisdom and kindness
I've watched this beautiful lady before, she's Awesome! Watching again in a pandemic 2020 because I need to re-learn her kitchen skills. God bless you Clara and your beautiful family and friends!! You're a life saver!! ❤
Virginia is wonderful! I know there are folks like her still out there, but they aren't growing on trees.
And that's one of my favorite parts too - making sure we don't go home empty handed. =)
It's time for a return to the old ways, I intend to restart the practice in my own life.
I want to be just like her in my old age!!
Nearly a lost art for sure. People watch a video like this and see all of the gorgeous produce and beautiful farm animals but may not think about the incredible amount of time and hard work it takes to build and maintain even a small farm. These folks work HARD for what they get from their farms!
Oh yea its hard, but its so rewarding
Pretty amazing to see that people still live this way! I am totally jealous of her cellar HOLY MOLY!
yes, it's amazing what she is still able to 'put-up'!
It doesn't take a celler full like this lady, it just learning and applying 1 jar at a time
I could sit all day listening to this lady. Reminds me of of my grandma.
Virginia thank you for inviting us into your beautiful home. I am so inspired and grateful.
She is an amazing woman. Warms my heart. I hope to be half the woman she is.
thanks for all your comments, peaveysp2g! I have more DIY food videos coming along shortly; but it's not every day you meet someone like Virginia who continues to live life, grow food and put it up, much as she did in years past. Refreshing and inspiring. =)
This lady has enough food for 5 apocalypses. Such a nice old lady.
That generation was so strong and had grit in them.
I love this lady. I hope she is well.
A wonderful way to vacuum seal - thanks for the tip! I really enjoyed this video.
Right? that was new to me too! And thanks for watching. =)
lovely woman and a great video
I'm in total agreement with you - and thanks!
I recently read, several times actually, a 1959 book called "Alas Babylon" by Pat Frank. It is about a group of people, and one family in particular, living in a small town in central Florida, who survive a nuclear exchange between the US and the Soviet Union. The story is about how they had to cope with the loss of "modern" convenience by reverting to an agrarian society. The story is still relevant today, though a bit overly patriarchal, and it has become one of my favorite books.
That is definitely a wonderful grandma "take some food home with you" :)
oh wow, that straw trick is soo cool! an old stanby for vacuum sealing!
Yes, but it doesn't work. When you check the bag even 10 minutes later there will be air inside. Most people think air gets in through the seal, but in reality that is not true. The air comes in right through the plastic itself.
Oh I love her. I would come and help with chores in exchange for food!! She could start a co op
I stopped half way through to comment on how correct you are about food being a lost art and parents of later generations not knowing about traditionalists. AMAZING video and very inspiring. Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it!
This is an old video, I hope she is still with us. Although she looks pretty healthy at 84. :-)
She is now 91 and kicking. She's my grandma.
I really enjoyed this video. More so because we could hear what that wonderful lady was saying at her pace. Making for a very relaxing enjoyable watch. You can almost hear her saying, "What else is a garden for, if you don't grow veg and fruit".
I raise a lot of our food, but this lady is inspiring me to kick it up a notch! Great video.
Thanks for sharing this lovely lady with us.
This woman is my hero! I love her outlook on life & resourcefulness.
THAT STRAW TRICK WAS AMAZING!!! BLEW MAH GODDAMN MIND!!

My dream life.
I love this video, what a sweetheart she is!
she was the real deal. thanks for watching!
I never wanna get old
What a great lady, you can tell she was hardworking & smart living off farm.
I know, right? I never thought of doing that before, but when I saw her do it, it made so much sense. Always nuggets of experience and wisdom to learn from other. =)
Thank you, for sharing my grandmother and her story. Is there a DVD of this available? I would love to have it including the edited out footage?
How is she now?
A wonderful lady keeps to her harvest amazingly all fresh food that's why she is living so long xxxx
thank you I was looking for a easier way to get the air out of the bag
Thank you Virginia! Thank you for all your knowledge! Your adorable!

soldier person one time i went out to eat with my sister and grandma and we were so full and when we came home she literally asked us if we wanted dessert 😂
OMG she is a treasure.
oh my goodness I just love her.
Amazing Lady.
God bless this lady. She really gives me hope that one day I'll be able to do something similar.
I want to live at her house! I grew up doing these things and miss it so much. Wanting to much to buy a farm house back in Ohio.
It's satisfying growing and putting up your own food. If you can't get back right away, maybe do something on a smaller level where you are?
Please keep producing these videos.
Bless her. Lovely video
Loved the video
Real living!
What a great video. God bless her.
Awesome!!!
I'd totally live with her and take care of that farm!! At 22 years old a lot of people my age are either too stuck up or plain stupid to realize that this is truly the best way of life.
Thanks mum
I wish she make canning & freezing & preserving tutorials. I want to learn from her so bad.
What a lovely lady.
Agreed, Virginia is a sweetheart!
I enjoyed your video

Beautiful video and woman...
I am Montagnard indigenous live in North Carolina I’m sure you are happy live off the land plants your own food enjoy with nature that what humans should live .
She is amazing! Reminds me so much of my own Gran. Looks like she doesn't live too far from my and mine wonder if she would trade some work around he farm for canning lessons and a few cutting from her fruit trees. Know My girls would love it.
I so want a root cellar. I WILL get one no matter what my husband says....
This is a wonderful video. I love the old way of doing things, and this may be the only way to do things in the near future. People do not realize how close we are to the edge, and I feel sorry for them. I for one am trying to be more self selfsuficient, but family is so not with me. Thank you for your vids, they help. Bev

at first i was like it would be hard to kill the chickens. like that pretty savage. but at the same time, im not gonna starve.
I didnt catch where she is from. Im looking for a location where I can do exactly what she has done. My own homestead and/or working on someone else's. I live in northeast oklahoma.
Have you looked in your area? I'm sure there are farms and/or homesteads that could use an extra pair of hands.
ya..but it's tough to find...google doesn't seem the best way to find something....maybe just word of mouth?
there's a forum over at homesteadingtoday [dot] com, or ask around. I'm sure there's something out there for you. good luck!
dont you have an extra room for me in that gorgeous nature mama??????????? sml.
I want her to teach me. she looks like she need some help. Can i help her? plz
0:53 the chickens are like, "Oh, I don't think so, beyotch!" Sorry, chickies, Granny has other ideas...other delicious ideas.
there aint young farmers taking the way of life, soon US gonna have to start exporting majority of their food from outside of the country. you need to feed your people, other countries gonna name the price.
It is a nice video...
BUT: Kids are not reared they are raised....
I saw this error in your introduction..hmm!
definition: "rear"
verb
1 [ with obj. ] (usu. be reared) bring up and care for (a child) until they are fully grown, esp. in a particular manner or place.
seriously? she is identified as "farm wife"? how often do you see "farm husband"? why cant she be just farmer or farm owner or something ugh. im sorry but it gets to me after a while.
not "sure what... you just said..". but i like your prof"ile picture..."
There was a time when women took pride in being a wife and the husband loved to have a wife like her. There is nothing wrong with being a wife.
