Hey guys, Aden is gradually taking on more and more one on one tutorials at the studio. Perhaps drop us an email if genuinely interested: aden.hynes@hotmail.com
I've DREAMED of having a backyard fill of faeries and glowing mushrooms...now I see what kind of labor and expertise goes into crafting pieces like this!!! Amazing work. 👏
That was some of your best work in my opinion. You guys really should look into a polyurethane foaming machine. While I'm nowhere near as good as you guys, we do make things for our Christmas display. We form up the basic shape in chicken wire, and I mean VERY basic shape, and where needed we fill it with newspaper or plastic bags, then spray it with foam. You have very little waste this way both in spraying and shaping. The newspaper and bags just give the foam something, other than chicken wire, to hit and expand on. It expands around the chicken wire and that adds a lot of strength to the already VERY strong foam. Again, we're not near the pro carvers you are, but we make some fun cool stuff. We shape it and then add the fiberglass right on the polyurethane foam. We don't have to worry about sticky foil or anything like that because the foam does not melt. Once foam sets up, in just a few seconds, nothing really affects it within reason, I mean as far as what you normally have around the shop or home for building with. You can't dump acid on it or anything like that is what I mean, but if you do, cut it out and fill it in with more foam. No magic. We use 3 pound foam, that stuff is like wood, and we just paint it. It's so strong we don't really gain anything by adding fiberglass to it. I mean you can literally walk on 3 pound foam that's one inch thick and not break it. I build Monolithic dome homes and I spray one inch of 3 pound foam right on the ground and we walk all over it laying #4 rebar 18 inches on center right on the foam before pouring concrete for the floor. We drag rebar, jump over concrete forms right onto the one inch thick foam and you can not hurt that stuff. A couple of other nice things are if you take too much off anywhere, spray a little more foam on that area, and you're good to go to try again. Also, it gives you a lot of freedom to try different looks and if you don't like it, again spray more foam on it to fill it in, and try a different look. Anyway that's my 2 pennies worth of advice, like you need it. haha Keep up the great work.
I read the story about House of illuminati willy wonka event in glasgow. I went to look at their website and under the wonka event saw a screenshot of this mushroom in your workshop. Then this video came up on my UA-cam feed. Did you do work for that too? Nice sculpting.
I love your work!! I just started my own business that involves lots of poly styrene carving and detailing. I hope someday I can refine and sharpen my skills so my pieces can compete with yours. Amazing work you guys!! Very inspirational!
I think I would like to try making one of these. I have had some experience with these medias and I would love to give it a go. Thanks for the beautiful inspirations and you gracious sharing.
Awesome video, thanks for sharing. Where can we find and obtain large blocks of the Styrofoam/polystyrene? I am in Colorado and can't find anything like that out here and have failed to find anything bigger than "home crafts" sizes online. THANKS!
Hi Clifford. Thank you very much for the kind words. Being in the UK, I wouldn't know where abouts in the States you could get some. However, maybe look more towards insulation companies. I hope that helps!
To think we actually got backlash about not carving a couple of things by hand because they needed to be so accurate! Outrageous! Thanks for the message Niall
We certainly do. Take a look at the below link: ua-cam.com/video/ayKxazPYzco/v-deo.html&pp=ygUqcGluayBmbG95ZCBkaXZpc2lvbiBiZWxsIHNjdWxwdHVyZSBzdHVkaW9z
Hi Aden, thanks for sharing this process. Just wondering did you actually use fibre glass woven cloth with the polyester resin after the aluminium foil or did you use some other compound?
Amazing build to your whole team and that gorilla in other vid is amazing. Questions for you how do you find the fiberglass stick to the aluminum foil as it should just peel off fairly easy and you may already know this but if you use epoxy resin instead of polyester resin it will not melt the eps foam and you won't have to use the foil. Epoxy is a lil bit more just look how they make surfboards using same foam and epoxy resin. Again great job to your whole team. Thanks.
Hey Travis, thanks for the comment and kind words. The cost of epoxy resin comes out much more expensive than polyester resin, and more expensive than it takes to foil the sculpture. So it's just the route we go down. And the glass fibre sticks to the foil well enough, and once cured, is on there securely.
Your projects are awesome! Watching makes me want to get stuck in myself haha, I tried this type of carving for the first time recently and see why it is so enjoyable!
I love your work and have been following you guys for a few years after looking for inspiration on how to make a fairytale castle bed for my oldest daughter. In this one the airbrushing really brings it to life and adds the detail lost in the fiberglass coat, really impressive!👍🏻
Amazing building however did you know the Willy Wonka scam event in Glasgow used screen shots from your video to show props being made for their event?
Hello friend!First of all, I like your work very much. My question is whether silver is tin foil.Silver foil? What role does it play in your work?Thank you very much!
Wonderful. Been getting into styro sculpture lately making Halloween decoration. Would love to know where I can get huge blocks of foam. I’ve been gluing 2” sheets together
Hey Mac, we get it from a manufacturer of EPS foam. Expanded polystyrene here in the UK. They create the large blocks 8ft x 4ft x 2ft, and either sell as whole, or in slices. Perhaps have a look for something similar in your area? Thanks for watching :) Send us some images of what you end up creating to aden.hynes@hotmail.com
Aden Hynes Sculpture Studios yeah I’ve been looking for EPS and XPS suppliers here in California. Maybe direct from manufacturers is another option. Thx. I’ll defo send some pics when I finish this latest project. Thx again. Love your work.
I am so going to make a village of Smurf to cover my yard for Halloween. Now I just need to figure our where to store everything the other 10 months of the year.
Hello, someone knows what the silver material is called ... that they put between the white cork and serves as the basis for giving the fiberglass and where you can buy it Thank you, greetings from Spain
Hi Jennifer. We use nail brushes, wire brushes, hot wires, and stone mason rifflers generally for carving. Please take a look at some of our other vidoes, where we often show these will a little more clarity. They're normally mentioned in the videos.
Hi Aden Hynes Studios and community following, I want to get started sculpting with polystyrene foam. What types of shops/stores are best to start looking in for this material? When I search online the lighter more airy polystyrene foam comes up. Are there specific types of polystyrene foam I should be searching for?
Hi Michelle, it all depends what sort of forms, sizes, shapes and levels of detail you're looking to achieve. Also, depends how much space you have, what means you have in order to cut the polystyrene, and what budget you have!
Where can you buy big chunks of Styrofoam I've always wanted to make huge pumpkins for fall decorations I can never find the big chunks of Styrofoam and is it expensive
Hey Heather, I'm afraid I wouldn't know where to get large blocks in the states! We're based in England. I would recommend some sort of styrofoam packaging company or something along those lines.
That was great. Have you thought about making online classes for people that want to learn how to sculpt with Polystyrene? I would take such a class.
Me too! I was just thinking, how do I learn to do this?

Pretty sure the conman behind House of Illuminati just stole the image.
I saw that too. I'd bet that the HOI took a screen shot. The pic is fairly pixelated.
@amybright7560 Yeah, it seems like something that company would do.
he also took a screenshot of a brahms concert. and for sure there were no brahms orchestra :'D
Split screen was clever. Timing out Aden walking through the background makes you an editing legend my friend.
Glad you picked up on that ;) Aden walking through sealed the deal
Hiya, how much would these cost???
Love the Pink Floyd pieces in the background...I saw those at a show in the 90's.
As somebody who builds props and communicates with the client - fitting inside of a transit is my favourite spec
I wish I could have a lovely fairy garden made for children's hospitals. It would be perfect. Well done all!
Hi! How do you keep the foam balls and dust from sticking to everything in your shop?
They turned out so beautiful! amazing skill and patience!
BRILLIANT‼️
Thanks for sharing. I’m happy to see the “sticky back foil”. I’m about to fiberglass a giant block of styrofoam and this idea helped!! 🙏🏼

Can you recommend materials to make a resin and powder mix apoxie sculpt is proving too expensive 😢
Amazing work.. I have been watching many foam videos, and have never seen the foil used. Love seeing different techniques.
Great work 😻👍🏻👍🏻
