Appetite for destruction is really timeless. While many of the hair metal/glam genre might be considered dated by a younger audience, GNR, especially with this album, has stood the test of time.
The thing with it was, it was a dirty, snotty album with a foot firmly stuck in the punk rock attitude, but with enough polish to make them palatable on MTV and with fans of the hair metal genre. Plus with their heavier sound, they also appealed to more traditional heavy metal fans as well.
As time went on they became more overblown and slick (although still great), but that album was certainly a stand out of the era and was just one big middle finger to establishment.
Guns N' Roses debut album 'Appetite for Destruction' was a once-in-a-lifetime hard rock album that will probably never be replicated because the 5 members that created it are not likely to get together to make another record and none of them are at the level (or mentality) that they once were when it was recorded in 1986... Guns N' Roses released a dual album 'Use your illusion' Vol. 1 & 2... but neither sounded anything like 'Appetite for Destruction' w/ original drummer Steven Adler being fired and replaced by Matt Sorum... keyboardist Dizzy Reed added to the line-up... and a number of guest musicians added to the tracks.
Singer W. Axl Rose left his native state of Indiana and made his way to Los Angeles to become a rock star in a band in the early 80's ... That was what inspired 'Welcome to the Jungle' - his arrival in L.A. on a Greyhound bus, penniless and greeted by hustlers, hookers, drug dealers and shady characters. He sought his friend (also from Indiana) guitarist Izzy Stradlin, who had arrived in L.A. before Axl to make it as a musician... It took a month living in the streets to find Izzy and the 2 formed the band Hollywood Rose.
Slash (lead guitar) and his friend Steven Adler (drums) saw Hollywood Rose one night in concert at a club and they were blown away by Axl's performance... Slash briefly joined Hollywood Rose but was fired before the band ultimately broke up in 1985.
Axl and Izzy joined another local band L.A. Guns featuring Tracii Guns (lead guitar) and Duff McKagan (bass)... Axl suggested in '85 that they change the band's name to Guns N' Roses... By 1986, Axl fired Tracii Guns and hired Slash and Steven Adler... Guns N' Roses may have been fire in concert but they were volatile and unpredictable as well... Drugs and alcohol were a main diet and Axl's demands that the band stay clean fell on deaf ears... No one wanted to manage the band... sign the band... or deal w/ their 'appetite for destruction'.
As a result, Guns N' Roses usually crashed in the drug dens of Hollywood where they lived, rehearsed and wrote songs together... They were jobless, broke and relied on selling drugs or hooking up w/ strippers to survive... They would often exchange coupons for McDonald's in order to eat... and the band was always on the verge of breaking up because of the fighting.
In 1986, A&R Tom Zutaut (who had signed Motley Crue) decided that Guns N' Roses were worth the effort... he signed the band to Geffen Records and finally secured a producer - Mike Clink... Making 'Appetite for destruction' was no easy task - Clink realized that recording sessions had to be done quickly; if they took too long, band members would get bored & leave to go to the bars or strip joints... The album cost $370K to make but it Axl's perfectionist tendencies that took the most time.
Of course, when the label heard 'Appetite for destruction'... they were horrified. 1986 was the year of Journey, Van Halen, Bon Jovi, Europe, etc. and Guns N' Roses were raw, heavy and very lyrically explicit for that era... Music industry insiders thought the album was so poor that they almost refused to release it, given that Guns N' Roses were always on the verge of splitting up. Their choice of an album cover also freaked out the label and they had to select an 'alternate' cover to release to mainstream retailers.
Alan Niven (who managed L.A. rockers Great White) agreed to manage Guns N' Roses and put them on tour opening for Motley Crue in '87... but the band was like a firecracker that was always ready to explode... They shot a music video for 'Welcome to the jungle' as 'Appetite for Destruction' was released in the Fall of '87... It debuted on MTV late in the year and exploded in popularity as the network was inundated w/ phone calls requesting the music video.
The album went to #1 in 1988 and defied all the critics and music industry 'experts'... It has since sold 18 million copies in the US alone.

I "think" how that "machine gun" vocal is done is by tonguing the roof of your mouth while singing through it. The proper way at least but don't quote me on that. I know I can replicate that sound by doing it that way though. "Sha-nah-nah-nah-nah" See? Well if you just tried to do it you heard it in your head voice.
"80's Nights"... there's no way you can fit 10 years of the Best Music made during the Industries most prolific Years into a few 2 hour segments.

I remember when this video came out on MTV back in the 80s, it was an edgy song for its time. It seems way tamer by today’s standards. I think when it first came out there were a number of people who were like, “who are these freaks?”.
the song came out in 87. but nobody cared. then in 1988 sweet child o mine came out, & made them overnight superstars. then they re-released Jungle in 88. so most people who heard the song in the 80s heard it in 88 a year after it came out. i remember all this because Sweet child o mine came out the same week my house was hooked up with cable TV for the first time. so of course the first channel you tune into when you get cable is MTV. & Guns n Roses was playing hourly.

Weird that when they first put this video on MTV, it didn’t take at first. It wasn’t until after “Sc’oM” video debuted later on to such instant success, that they re-released this video and it to, got big.
