- From the Klavierfestival Ruhr in the Jahrhunderthalle Bochum, Germany:
Daniel Barenboim conducts and performs with Staatskapelle Berlin.
Ludwig van Beethoven - Piano Concerto No. 5 in E flat major Op. 73
00:00 I. Allegro
21:10 II. Adagio un poco mosso
29:16 III. Rondo Allegro
Daniel Barenboim - piano and conductor
Staatskapelle Berlin
About the piece
The world of music initially reacted less enthusiastically to Beethoven's Fifth Piano Concerto in E-flat Major, Op. 73. "The excessive length of the composition", wrote one reviewer, following the work's first public performance at a Gewandhaus concert in Leipzig on 28 November 1811, "reduced the overall effect that this glorious product of the composer's mind would undoubtedly otherwise have produced." On the one hand, the critic was not entirely wrong, for the Fifth Piano Concerto is Beethoven's longest piano concerto, and in its heroic "Eroica" key of E fiat major is certainly a "glorious product of the composer's mind". But with the best will in the world, it is impossible to claim that it fails to produce an "overall effect". Quite the opposite, in fact. The Fifth is the most effective of Beethoven's five piano concertos and one of the most popular of all contributions to the medium.
Outside the German-speaking world, the work's special status is acknowledged by descriptions of it as the "Emperor", "L'Empéreur" and "Imperatore". This alternative name was not Beethoven's but probably derives from his friend and publisher Johann Baptist Cramer. Despite its inauthenticity, it goes straight to the heart of the matter, for no piano concerto begins on a more majestic or more resplendent note. Three times the full orchestra intones a radiant chord and three times the solo piano responds with a bravura cadenza before the orchestra introduces the main theme. At the climax of the development section, the orchestra and the solo instrument engage in a veritable battle fought out over harshly dotted rhythms from which they emerge as equals. And even in the soloist's cadenza, the orchestra refuses to fall completely silent but engages in a subtle dialogue with the piano. In none of his other piano concertos was Beethoven as successful in forging a novel synthesis between concertante writing and the gestural language of the symphony.

We wonder, we smile, we wave our head, our hand, just close your eyes. After all, thank you for becoming a composer, Beethoven. I feel a pure humanity through your music.
Bravo Maestro!
I believe no one has ever shown so much understanding of Beethoven's legacy.
I have a deep respect for Maestro Baremboim as a conductor, soloist, and human being.
He has become imortal in the hall of fame of the great musicians of our time.
Not True! More colorful beautiful piano sound for Beethoven than Barenboim=Wilhelm Kempff Emil Gilels Radu Lupu Vladimir Ashkenazy Grigory Sokolov! More genius for Beethoven than Barenboim=Sviatoslav Richter Solomon Cutner Grigory Sokolov Maurizio Pollini! The Hard truth is Barenboim is a second-rated pianist! Barenboim is the most over-rated ever!!

@@RaineriHakkarainen Dear Raineri,
Taken by the emotion of the Music I had just heard, I was stating my belief, my opinion if you want. And as such, it is true, just like all opinions and beliefs.
In regards to beauty and colorfulness of execution, for Italian Romantic period music it can sometimes be measured as the more, the better executed.
I was talking about Beethoven, a German Composer who never really abandoned Classicism, although he is rightly credited to the Romantic era.
Again it is my opinion that to my ears great Maestro Daniel Barenboim always understood Beethoven more than anyone else in his time. The evidence of that is his remarkable legacy of so many anthological renditions that have been immortalized. It is not everyone that has accomplished so much in a life time.
Of course that his talent was followed by his fame. It is true that I have not heard all the other players that you have mentioned.
I was just saying that I have deep respect for his work and that Maestro Barenboim is my favorite Maestro, particularly when it comes to Beethoven's work.
And that as a great human being he would probably never say to someone, as ignorant as that person might sound, that his/her beliefs were not true, either.
Enjoy the Music!
@@PetriAdelheid-nt6md due to the advanced age and the responsibility to conduct the orchestra while being the soloist that execution may have been what one who has never been in such situation would laugh at.
To my ears it was perfect.
It is unbelievable that this discussion going on. Music is supposed to unite people, not make them jealous.
Thank yoy EUROARTS CHANEL FOR SHARING THIS MARVELOUS CONCERT,MILES CONGRATULATION TO PIANIST AND TO ORCHESTRA.
Absolute Perfection!! Nothing more to say
Dank.
Magistral!! Como la vida misma!

I love this! Thank you!
Perfectly....
A truly memorable performance of an exceptional piece of music...
No volvere a escuchar otra mejor ...👏👏👏👏👏👏🌹🌹..
A great man of music. The world is richer for his presence
This is humanity at its apex, the best we can be. And it doesn't even cost anything to listen.
agreed, great comment
When I think about Beethoven, I always wonder "how could anyone have had SO MUCH magnificent music in his head??" And we are the lucky recipients!!
Unlike Mozart, Beethoven composed with a lot more struggle, yet the result it's so miraculous it deserves even more the name of "The Voice of God"!
Very luckiest, I can say.
@@grinpisu if Beethoven is the voice of god, J. S. Bach is God' s messenger, the fifth evangelist.

Well, it cannot be the god of the bible for the only noise it would make is one that would make your ears bleed, before shattering them in agony, without doubt, the most abhorrently disgusting character in fiction.
Beethoven was supremely talented and incredibly hard working, please let us heap praise on the man rather than appealing to supernatural nonsense

English is not your first language is it......
My initial response was not difficult to understand, so no idea why you are having any issues
The second movement has to be the most beautiful pieces of classical music. But the whole symphony is sublime. Barenboim is amazing.
Peter R Hill this is a concerto
Julia Barnoschi It isn’t necessary to be so rude.
the piano speaks to the heart
@Julia Barnoschi So you disrespect people instead of teaching them?!
This is the most extraordinary performance. Conducting, with no music, from memory, whilst playing the most amazing piano creating the most beautiful, exhilarating and moving music ever made. Sublime.
The 2nd movement, my favourite (the B side of the vinyl), starts with such tender, stirring beauty. Uh, what more can I say.
I agree: it's astonishing to think that great conductors like Barenboim (and Zubin Mehta!) has SO many scores committed to memory. And it's like a double whammy that Barenboim plays AND conducts from the piano. Sometimes it almost seems like the highest human achievement to me.
why this doesn't have 30 million views is tragic..
It is easy to see why this is considered one of the best compositions ever, it is just awesome.
when you are listening to it you can not think of anything better
f u c k up
+Johnfeehan Yeah I love this concerto, but Daniel plays it a bit choppy, I think I am in the minority but I like Zimerman a bit better.
+Eric Day Glenn Gould all the way
Eric Day thanks for that
There is a place in Beethoven's heart , where the notes are born and raised , and by the time they grow up , each one carries it's own bag of emotions and jumps into sheets out of turn , creating complex eternal pieces
I love that description.
Barenboim takes me to heaven and back into the depths of despair and back up to heaven again..... so tender when he needs to be, so fierce when it is required. Absolutely amazing. Thank you
Perhaps the best piano concerto ever written and Barenboim is great.
I'm sad that you can't seem to hear the sublime and noble greatness in this work. Yes...it's merely my opinion, but Beethoven's 5th piano concerto stands up to repeated hearings without getting tiresome. I've listened to it 100s of times.
+David Topchiev 'Generic' sounds pejorative. Why not say it goes beyond description? Beethoven wrote something so great that it can't be put in words!
+David Topchiev David, I see what you're saying, but melodies can become tiresome and cloying upon repeated hearings whereas Beethoven's 5th Piano Concerto rises above all that like a giant. He has written something that goes to another realm entirely. It's unparalleled and it's GOOD that it can't be boiled down into clichéd melodies. Your point is actually why this piece does not tire easily. It's one of the most enduring concertos in the repertoire.
+David Topchiev David, I first heard this work on cassette tape when I was 16. I was transfixed and I played it over and over again. This piece is what got me hooked on classical music. Try listening to it five times in a row. It does have melodies and an ineffable flow and complex emotions, but they are all very well-woven and connected. Also, if you like Tchaikovsky (naturally I do as well), try listening to Shostakovich, too...especially his symphonies. You'll hear how Shostakovich has taken that Russian romanticism to a completely new and fresh level. His 4th is a good place to start. That got him in trouble with Stalin and the performance was delayed for nearly 30 years in the Soviet Union. Perhaps his 7th and 10th are the most accessible, but anything Shostakovich wrote was genius. Also, all real 'romantic' music of the 19th century stemmed from Beethoven. He was a revolutionary and his 3rd Symphony is a testimony to that. Happy listening!

We are all very lucky to be able to see and hear this performance at such close quarters. Barenboim, obviously more mature these days but still able to bring out new nuances in a beautiful performance and totally dedicated to the music. The orchestra is fabulous! If you want to make a critical comment perhaps you should read Barenboim’s biography to fully understand the depths of this man’s musical genius and his quest for humanity.
Bravo !!!
Beethoven always fills me with joy and happiness. Particularly the 3rd and 6th symphonies, and this concerto.
+Martin Albers and violin concerto too :)
Yes Ops 61 included
What a maestro is Barenboim, and what a magnificent orchestra is the Staatskapelle Berlin!!!
the lightness even at 33:56
And what a wonderful sounds comes from that piano 🖤
I think it's incredible that he can play and conduct one after the after. He clearly feels the music and as a pianist that's what counts that you enjoy it and move the audience. The orchestra are wonderful as well, thanks for sharing. Such beauty...
Jodi I can only agree with you, he plays with such emotion challenged by none !.
I don't think he's entirely successful as conductor - the orchestra seems a little below par to me - for Beethoven that is
That's how Beethoven would have performed it!
Peter Klatzow, that is already a given, I think she was saying it’s amazing by human standards; after all, Beethoven is the god who created this piece. 😂
Sir Daniel Barenboim,I would like to thank you for everything you offer us from your musical perspective.A complete balance between the essential parts as well the more "aggressive" ones. And all these put in unique technique.
Soulfulness comes to finish the painting......ΕΥΧΑΡΙΣΤΩ!!

This is the very first classical piece I ever heard. Fifteen years old, Wrotham (Kent) Secondary school. I had never heard anything like it before and was immediately transported to another place. Hooked ever since! Thank you Mr Rush, for allowing this boy to embrace the classics. For that I will forever be in your debt!
THANKS GOD FOR BEETHOVEN!!!
No notes. Barenboim knows the entire concerto by heart. He can conduct an orchestra and play the piano part simultaneously. What a genius!
I can sense the perfect form of art even in his facial expressions throughout..how exquisite that is..He always performs with his entire body and soul..
the most expressive and best version I have heard. Gould just flies through it. I prefer this one
I usually start out with Beethoven's music thinking "Oh, that sounds cool", just to be overwhelmed with emotions the 3rd or 4th time I listen to it and call friends to ask them to please listen to this masterpiece. It's becoming a familiar pattern.
I totally agree with you 😉
It's the little things in classical music that get me.
When the horns enter at 18:50 - it just captures such a perfect mood. Like a warm orange dawn after a cool summers night.
Beethoven;s %th Concerto is not just a " PIECE"" of music it is the culmination of the human experience has no parallel nor equal...Beethoven here is not just writing music but a Human Testimony for the generations to come to elevate us over, hate, racism, greed, pain and human suffering..inflicted by another human for whatever reason
zeer mooi gezegd ...
well said, I need to repeat this here: "a Human Testimony for the generations to come to elevate us over, hate, racism, greed, pain and human suffering..inflicted by another human for whatever reason ...... " I am working since 57 years to discover what it is, that: hate, racism, greed, pain and human suffering ..... could not find anything substantial in it, and still everyone believes in keeping it in their innermost core ......
Amo profundamente esse concerto.💚💛🇧🇷💙

Just saw Barenboim live yesterday playing this same concerto in Berlin, and now watching this to attempt to re-live it. Outstanding, mindblown... brilliant technique, articulation and interpretation. UA-cam sound does no justice to how Maestro Barenboim sounds in the concert hall. Nonetheless, glad to play this as I work
I'm so jealous!! WOW, to see Barenboim live would be so wonderful. Although nothing can compare to a live performance, I'm thankful that there's so much classical music, interviews etc. on UA-cam.
Thank You EuroArtsChannel for this beautiful concert
The whole concerto is a masterpiece, but words can't describe the beauty of the second movement...
To state the obvious, Barenboim is a genius and this particular concerto fills me with such joy and happiness. Wonderful - awesome.
a pinnacle of human intellect and talent
ph
People criticizing and acting like experts. And I am just sitting here admiring the way this pinaist genius plays chamber music with the distinguished artists of this orchestra in one of the most difficult piano concertos in the history of music. So much excellent musicianship in one recording.
Very much agree👍
but i think no experts will act like that :v
Beethoven piano concerto no 3 Barenboim
Classical music
I very like classical music .I hope that a lot of violin performance are present here.thanks to you,
Completely agree with you, as I think most reasonable people will. People on the internet love to come across as experts. Barenboim is a genius!
Without a doubt the greatest piano concerto ever written. This is an excellent rendition, to be sure although the recording with James Levine and Alfred Brendel remains the non plus ultra... IMHO. Thanks so much for sharing this!
Ah, to imagine that a single human brain can come up with such eternal music makes me feel utterly inadequate.
Simply, oustanding! One of the best performance of this concerto!
A stunning exquisite performance. Beethoven remains in my opinion the pre-eminent classical composer of all time and the Emperor is one of his finest pieces. Barenboim is like a fine wine who has aged magnificently. Beethoven was a solid man with pudgy fingers. I can imagine him approving greatly of this interpretation.
pure admiration for Meastro Daniel Barenboim, Emperor is such a large piece of concerto, yet he chose the way, Beethoven would want the piece to be interpreted, Conductor and also the pianist, it is so difficult to achieve cohesion as well as musical interpretation at the same time, yet he pull it off, Bravo
He seems possessed by the music. He and the orchestra are one. Thanks you, Mr. Barenboim, for your wonderful contribution.
as a Pianist he is brilliant - I met him 1979 in Menthon - he is a Genius
In his youth he wasn't such a great pianist. He lacked real feeling, the true sign of a good musician.
He was rather a technician.
In the latter years, now, as he finally grew relatively old, he plays and now also conducts very well.
His genius deceased wife - the incredibly gifted cellist Jeacqueline De Pre - he proved a rather bad husband
to her, I think her life could be prolonged if she was married to a really loving man.His faithlessness is a black stain forever on him.
Was it necessary to bring that up. His personal life is his business not yours to spread gossip about. Tend to your affairs and let others take care of their own.
Robert shawannother worth for stupidity
robert shaw you are unnesserly over sensitive , comment toward someone is nasty !!!
the best emperor concerto I have ever heard. Barenboim is absolutely the best I have heard. Just as Beethoven would have played!!
Expressive, well interpreting, powerful bass support and clarity of high notes of Steinway piano, excellent orchestra players... I would say, PERFECT! 😍😍😍😍😍
1. Satz (Allegro): 00:01
2. Satz (Adagio un poco mosso): 21:00
3. Satz (Rondo Allegro): 29:16
The performance and the piece are beautiful. Mr Daniel Barenboim is spectacular:both conducting and playing the piano
Kiss me mommy
The Staatskapelle Berlin is a wonderfully versatile orchestra under Barenboim's direction.
L'orchestra è grandiosa: timbri nitidissimi, precisione assoluta, e segue il Maestro in modo impeccabile!
One of the greates... is depending on many factors. All the musicians are great, and Mr. Barenboim is one of them. We are listenig music, not making hierarchy.

The second movement is for healing a soul.
This has to be one of the best renditions of this piece that the tube has shown to me!
Can we take a minute to appreciate the fact that Barenboim has no sheet of music and performs the whole piece from memory.
cypsparodies T crazy isnt it
Not to detract for the astonishing achievement you've pointed out, it is typical for the soloist not to play with sheet music - by the time they're in concert, they've practised the piece so many times that every ink dot is etched into their memory.
True, but he is not only the soloist but conducting the entire orchestra as well!
lovlly
Great Maestro, Barenboim!!!
Joy and time to respire in our time. Just love the interoretation by Daniel Barenboim 💕
This must be one of the most divine piece of music ever made; so subtle, yet so powerful and emotional!
What a talent and unbelievable that it is available for everyone to listen to. Even my still unborn baby girl responds with lots of movements every time I listen to this beautiful piece of work :)
Such delightful comment. All the best to you ... and your (lucky) baby girl. Lucky to be introduced to Ludwig van Beethoven at this tender age.
I think Barenboim is marvelous !
Thank you very much for your comment. We have a playlist dedicated to the pianist and conductor that may interest you: goo.gl/vUYNkM :)
Saagenhaft.
Ohne Zweifel wirklich gut.
I think it's incredible that Barenboim can play and conduct one after the after and thanks god for Beethoven's music.
I listen to this piece nearly every day - it makes me feel well. I just love every minute.
after several times of watching/listening to concertos of the same composition by Zimerman and Lang Lang, i feel this concerto is far better.

following the best inspiration, when huge personalities like MAESTRO BARENBOIM is giving us..such a planetary sense, so great just like BEETHOVEN's vision of things, feeling in this music how LIFE ON EARTH IS HOLY DIVINE SACRED CREATION indeed, promoting this way classical music on WEB audience, for those who don't know at all, how much they might need classical music is...just how GOD loves us, making such important imaginary virtual donation on no using money at all, yeah, GOD loves us, classy cool people, BIG BIG LIKE all over again
