Ludwig van Beethoven - Beethoven Piano Concerto No. 4 in G major Op. 58
01:15 I. Allegro moderato
20:58 II. Andante con moto
26:12 III. Rondo vivace
Daniel Barenboim - piano and conductor
Staatskapelle Berlin
The Piano Concerto No. 4 in G major, Op. 58 is a work that begins - unprecedentedly - with the solo instrument alone, playing softly and gently ("dolce") and expounding the first subject over five whole bars. Particularly interesting about this theme are its thrice-repeated quavers, which are vaguely reminiscent of the pounding motif associated with fate in the opening movement of the Fifth Symphony. Surviving sketches indicate that the opening themes of these very different works were indeed conceived at more or less the same time. The Fourth Piano Concerto dates from 1805-6, a period that also witnessed the composition of the Violin Concerto and Fourth Symphony. The Fourth Piano Concerto and Fourth Symphony both received their first performances at a concert at the Viennese home of Prince Joseph Franz Maximilian Lobkowitz in March 1807. Once again the composer himself was the soloist. A review of a second performance of the concerto described the work as "a new pianoforte concerto of tremendous difficulty that Beethoven performed astonishingly well at the fastest possible speeds".

Well, I've always loved Daniel Barenboim and his interpretation of Beethoven, but that orchestra is brilliant! I've never heard better. They're so tight!
His orchestra for 30 years. All members learnt brilliantly to listen to each other. And the work in the rehearsals with him were fascinating.

Beethoven must be very happy looking at this man
Love this concerto ! Love you both - Mr. Beethoven & Mr. Barenboim !!
Each moment is infinite, each phrase is brilliant and young. Love leads us cleanly home. Bravo!
Bravo, Bravissimo Maestro!
Daniel Barenboim has such a rich carreer and personal history! I loved to see him conducting the Neuejahrs Konzert back in 2014 (if my memory serves me right) and I've never seen a soloist fusing with the conductor before these piano concerts. Well, what a pleasure it is! I truly admire great musicians!
Mr Barenboim is the most important old-fashioned pianist! The greatest performer, Beethoven! And what else he interprets is his signature! It is a protector that treats the piano as a symphony orchestra!
Bravo, maestro! My thanks to you and to the wonderful orchestra for these recordings. Bless you all.
Piano and orchestra in perfect harmony! Warm and beautiful! Intelligent cameraman and a well directed video! DAMN the killjoy advertisement between movements!!!
uBlock Origin :)
One of the most sublimely beautiful pieces of music EVER composed int he history of music! This, along with the D Major violin concerto and the beautiful ensemble just before the end of Mozart's Marriage of Figaro! Ahhhhh so beautiful. Beethoven was a genius melody writer.
Superb, as always. Both thumbs up for the composer and the performers. Thank you for sharing this video.
Barenboim has such sensitivity.
This piece was originally performed on Dec 22, 1808 along with Symphonies 5&6. It was a benefit concert for Beethoven - he conducted as well as played. The concert was apparently 4 hours long and it was freezing in the concert hall in Vienna. The concert goers certainly got their monies worth!
Profound artistic union of music and musician orchestrated by Maestro Barenboim. A true gift.
Maestro Daniel. Gracias Ludwig!!!
Fantastic. Thank you Daniel.
Great acoustic.
i think it is fantastic: the composition, and the play by both barenboim and the orchestra. An excellent performance. Unlike others I see his conducting as a natural need by barenboim. he knows the orchestra is good, but he tries to get the maximum out of it; and he is excited by doing it. I love to see it: the absolute passion, the mastership!
? " Natural need"
This man became a conductor only in his advanced age.
i judge his performance, not his character. In his performance he was passionate and excellent
You don't know what you're talking about: Barenboim has been conducting since early adolescence!
Sorry, my comment was directed towards the person who claimed Barenboim became a conductor "in advanced age"!
Well... it doesn't get better .Just overwhelming!!
In the aspect of the soloist playing/conducting, remember that this was the norm in Beethoven's day. The art of conducting a concerto (and turning the piano so that the audience could see the performer's profile) came along in Liszt's day. Felix Mendelssohn being perhaps the prime conductor of his day, years after Beethoven's death. However, this video is pretty much what you would have seen with Beethoven himself doing the honours. I can't imagine a better, true-to-the-score performance of this work than this video. (I've seen everyone from Claudio Arrau to Mitsuko Uchida do this work, and Barenboim's performance is my choice.)
I recommend that you listen to this concerto played by Jayson Gillham with Vladimir Ashkenazy. :) This performance was great though!

He is a real great man as a musician also as personality. Mankind should have more men like him !!
He left his wife , and she had sclerosis
He didn't really leave Jaqueline. Yes, he had a mistress (Jaqueline didn't know about her), but he stayed married until she died. I would not blame him for that. It may not be the best thing he could have done, still far better than others.
Mannfred Harjung
He does not have a good character, and as a husband to the genius cellist Jackeline De Pre, who died so young, and her death was an awful blow to the world of music, he was a sad failure. (He didn't take care of her in her illness, and was unfaithful to her.(.
This is a rather ugly approach.
No wonder why Lang Lang play this concerto so beautifully , Barenboim gave him master class to Lang Lang to play as he does ,!!!!
This performance of Concerto #4 is my current obsession. Ecstasy! I think if I'd been able to attend the full cycle of Concertos Barenboim did with Staatskapelle, I would have had to be carried out on a stretcher!
Anne Dwyer It has now become my obsession - third movement in particular
The Murray Pariah version is better. He has such command over the piano. It is a flawless performance
Great piece of music. Thanks.
Grande maestro.
Composer, Orchestra, Conductor/Pianist, all at 'point of perfection'
Genial! Viva Beethoven!Viva Baremboim!
Beethoven's best self portret, describing the struggles he'd gone through showing he never bent to the will of others. The piano made the orchestra bend and accept him as he is.
I love music❤
21:57 his eyebrow.A so serious piece yet i laughed there.
goed
agree. hh
Mr. spock, i believe had THAT move!
So ein phantastischer Musiker!
Grossartig, fabelhaft!!!
Very peacful to hear at night :) Thanks for the video 👍
This piano concerto has the best slow movements I've ever heard. And in a fantastic performance nevertheless. Kudos to Barrenboim!
Amazing!
Amazing!
stupendamente bello
The Cosmic energies re-creating this Universe: the unspeakable Love that leads Chaos and Time together into a new version of space and matter, and also of our inner divine kernel. Passage 9:10 - 10:40 = one of the higjhest peaks in Western civilization (as for music art, only J. S. Bach reached those sublime dimensions). Regards from Bs. As.
he is always using quite a bit of force to produce a sound.
Conducting takes a lot of energy as well. He does not seem to get tired as he ages. Where is all this energy coming from? Perhaps the music itself is energizing
great piece. good player
The rondo sounds so good! You can really hear the baroque style
??
ascoltero' anche altri suoi concerti
As a whole, it's like a take of refreshing breath at the countryside courtyard in front of the small chapel
I see that for the first movement Barenboim plays Beethoven's ALTERNATIVE cadenza instead of the more commonly played original one. I like it though I prefer the original. Both of these cadenzas are available on IMSLP.
How about those Brahms cadenzas to this concerto, huh?
minunat concert !
All these Beethoven concerts was not on for one day was it ? They are all very enjoyable , spectacular concerts !!!!
can't agree more with you
Luke Joe It was a 3 day piano festival. What makes it more impressive is the fact that he played everything from memory while conducting the orchestra. This Made one of the most memorable 65th birthdays I have ever seen.

It's truly THRILLING how the music goes from "0-60" and back down again in just a few seconds starting at 35:45. And isn't that Barenboim's wife Elena Bashkirova in the audience for a few seconds at 38:09? (She's also shown in the audience for a few seconds at the end of Concerti #3 and #5)
him doing this from memory has to be the equivalent of the ancient bards reciting all of Homer from memory!
genius....
Which model of the Steinway did Mr. Barenboim used to perform this wonderful feat ?
Has to be D
He (Barenboim) is so cute. :-)

Im wonder what opening song is
what is the piece in the intro? thanks!
Geanina Condria Piano Concerto no. 2, Beethoven, end of the last movement, from what I remember. :)

I think I remember seeing a performance of this great concerto by Solomon at the newly opened Royal Festival Hall in the early fifties
"Consider the lilies of the field
They toil not, neither do they spin
And yet I say unto you that even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed
As one of these"
Luke chapter 12
Wonderful, unforgettable music, spoiled by advertisements. Do the imbeciles responsible not realise that it must have a seriously negative impact on the product is being advertised? Not to mention my blood pressure!

I adore Barenboim, but the fact that he is doing so much (conducting and playing) distracts me. I would like to see him more comfortable and focused on one thing. Anyway it's great stuff
+Daniel Brito A professional, well rehearsed orchestra do not need a conductor/pianist to wave their arms about every time they stop playing - or even just have one hand free! Everything is sorted in rehearsal. I wish Barenboim would focus on playing rather showing how clever he is at multitasking. But I agree, great performance :)
çellist at 27:27 ...
hey, iv subbed, very nice music you have! how long did it took to get that many subscribers? i just started my piano composition channel, uploaded my first clip wich feature a real full symphonic orchestra...got, 41 subscribers so far any advice?? thanx M. J
The audience seemed a bit more roused for this concerto and at the end were showing some enthusiasm for the performance. They seemed very stiff in the first three.
21:13 - 21:43 this section inspired chopin
3:56 Not the proudest moment for the cellos and basses.
He should take care to solve the bald head looks.
