I am now learning the Pirc opening with black and I like it a lot. In a recent game the opponent came at me pretty early with the fried liver attack (Ng5 and Bc4). The engine just tells me to castle, trade R + P for B + N and happily continue with a slight advantage. Any ideas on what is best here?
You are a very good Chess teacher. I like how you explain each variations slowly with repetitions. I think it helps to sink in the lessons which are hard to do from watching videos. The ideas behind the moves along with mental queues to help position choices are all excellent ways to absorb the lessons.
This is a fantastic introduction to the pirc. It also shows how learning the KID is a complementary skill. NM Ramirez is one of the great chess teachers on UA-cam.

Just wanted to thank you for a beautifully instructive video aimed to educate people at beginners and intermediate level. I slumped from 1500 to 1300, but by playing this consistently with black, I've gotten back to 1450. Fantastic stuff!
Apart from totaly miss pronounced the name of the chess master from Slovenia you certainly broke it down beautifuly.i play it with the black every single time.90% of the games with black are won .majority of people dont know what to do.best opening for black by far. magic with black pieces.thanks for your knowledge and experience.
Wow, thank you so much for not just showing the beginning principles, and throwing some middle game ideas. I was always reluctant to play Nf6 because of d5, but now I know that d5 is either a strategic mistake, or just a variation after e5. I also now know what to go for in terms of an attack. I always moved my c knight outta the way to go for f5, but I always went to h5 for some reason, probably because the idea of retreating didn’t seem very appetizing, I was always afraid of getting squished if I wasn’t careful. And after d5 in a closed pawn structure, I always played c6 in hopes of putting my knight back, but now I know that is not necessary, and perhaps later on will lead to complications. I also have another idea that I been experimenting with with the Bg4 line. If I really don’t want h3 to happen before Bg4, I’ve tried playing it BEFORE castling. I’ve found a bit of success with this, but I’m only a 1000, so perhaps I didn’t win because of Bg4, 1000 territory is a very interesting one. Again, thank you, and I will definitely give some of these middle game ideas a try if I can!
Like this video very much... I watched it more than 10 times.... the only thing that is not covered but my oponents play against me often lately is Byrne variation...
Hello Mile! Thank you so much for your feedback. We have covered other variations such as the 150 attack and Austrian in other lessons. We will cover the Byrne in a few lessons 👍
Robert, thank you for this well-prepared Pirc lesson :) I used to play kings indian for d4 and now I also change my answer for e4 for Pirc defense. You showed that this is one of the most beautiful chess openings :)

Thank you for this! The Pirc Defense is my favourite opening, and I've been looking for a Pirc video forever. You explain it perfectly, you got my sub!
I am a beginner but about four days ago I used this on a long-time player and chess fanatic. I beat him and he resigned. I have been watching Robert's videos and taking classes every day from him. I also do puzzles daily. Robert is the best instructor I have found!!
You have covered a lot already, big thanks for the content! However, there is a sideline which no one has covered as of yet, which is the harmonist variation... 2.f4. Would love to hear your view on this move and possible continuations.
Thank you so much for these lessons! As a beginner who is using the Pirc, these videos are so helpful! I also really like that you keep the rest of the game in the analysis, it helps tremendously to see the middle game ideas and how to play after reaching a certain opening position :)
Absolutely amazing video! Subscribed. I was always attracted to Pirc since Kasparov Topalov Immortal (Topalov lost, but before the genius sac he had a very cool position)

You are welcome, Zalån! Do not worry too much about memorizing everything for now. Once you start using it, you will get a better feeling for it. This kind openings only require you to understand the main ideas and you will be fine. Have fun and let me know if you have any questions 👍
Just discovered your channel. Thank you for sharing your chess knowledge! You do have pedagogical skills which makes viewing this as an easy trip on a chess board :)
I've got every cheapo chess set in my house splayed out on the coffee table and next to me on the couch and the ottoman, going over all the different variations, I think I'm just gonna focus on kings knight openings for a while, 1. Nf3 KID KIA and the Pirc, my theory is that any pawn structure that can arise in a game of chess will show up with these openings, so when I start playing the French or the Dutch, I'll already have an idea how the pawn structures will work.. The other day someone played c5 against my 1. Nf3 and I thought hmm.. this is like a sicilian with black up a tempo, but then again it could be like playing the Pirc against the English with me up a tempo, I like how adaptable these openings are, thanks for sharing this with the world
Hello! I would recommend you try them both to see which one you like better. I like to start my students with the Czech first and then transition into the regular Pirc 👍
Man, you made me fall in love with chess after a 10 year break from playing! I loved fianchettos, and I was yet to choose my main opening, but this is it! I bought some books, I bought a course and now I'm studying everyday! You're gonna say thank you for my feed back, I say thank you for your knowledge and dedication!! Update: after playing (against the Tomas bot 1200Elo) for some time and studying the opening (Pirc classical variation, quiet system) I beat that bot 95% of the time while I was loosing time after time before studying. To improve I analyze each game I play and see the mistakes I made, so my accuracy is usually no lower than 80%, some +60 moves games was around 95! It's not an easy opening, but it's a lot of fun to play!!!
Well, this means a lot, Darîo. Welcome back! I also have a thing for openings that involve the fianchetto. Let me know if you have any questions as you go through these lessons. Maybe we see you in a tournament soon! P.S: thank you for your feedback 😎 One of the biggest rewards of putting this course together is seeing how you guys actually find it useful.
I watched this video ONE TIME. Immediately took what I could remember and tried it against a much higher rated player online. CHECK MAKE in 19 moves.😂😂😂 I think I've found my new chess coach! Thank you for the instruction! 👍🏾
Love your videos but do have a question on this one. At the position shown at the 5:00 mark you show black continuing with either 6...Bg4 or 6...c6. Lichess book openings and Stockfish show 6...Nxe4 as the more popular/better choice, with 7. Nxe4, d5 to follow. Is there a reason you didn't consider 6...Nxe4 in this video?
Hello Rick! You are correct. The reason why I did not mention it and also why I do not play Nxe4 myself is that the position we get is quite different to the other typical position types we get from the Pirc (and even the King's Indian Defense -lesson # 85). At least for now in the course, I would like you to try to stay in your elements. By exploring variations like Nxe4 we expand our horizons, but little by little 😎 Hope this makes sense and thanks a lot for bringing it up 👍💪
I love the way your focus is equally split between the main ideas and the lines. A lot of channels lack this and tend to focus too much on very specific lines that are seldom played at lower and intermediate levels. Keep up the good work, looking forward to seeing more. Saludos desde Thailandia
Hello sir I reached 1200 today . I watched only 2-3 videos after I reached 1100 as I thought I should at least be 1200 before moving forward I like the Czech pirc more than this but will try this also . Tqs for your guidance sir
I actually figured out this opening on my own . I used to call it the "fort opening" A few month later I battled my teacher and he said it was called the pirc opening.
Love this video, thought I was playing kings Indian defense until lichess told me otherwise, love the variation walkthrough Just a question, in the tranposition into a kings indian, the light squared bishop is quite a central piece in my understanding, What is your thoughts on giving that bishop early. nvm dident watch long enough :D

Hi, Please can you tell me how to play against the mad dog line it goes Bc4 and Qe2 the proper name is the kholmov system, I can't seem to defend against it can you help please. Thanks for all your videos you are an inspiration to all chess players 👍
Hello Lynn! Once we finish learning about the King's Indian Defense, we will have a few lessons on middle and endgames, but soon after we will cover other lines of the Pirc including that one. In the interim, you can play it like this: 1.e4, d6 2.d4, Nf6 3.Nc3, g6 4.Bc4, Bg7 5.Qe2 (I assume this is what you mean) 5..., Nc6 (attacking d4) 6.Nf3, Bg4 (pinning the f3 knight so we can take Nxd4 and threaten their queen along the way) Then, when they defend d4, we can insert e5 or even 0-0. Please, let me know if this makes sense 👍

Hello Anil! Thank you for your nice feedback. I really appreciate it! Hope you enjoy the Pirc as well and feel free to ask me any questions you might have 👍
Around the 24 minute mark he didn't need to retreat at all, in fact if he goes Knight to c7 - Queen can't take and the Rook is threated so the Rook has to move - so his next move is Knight to e6 and now he's forking the Queen, the Bishop and Rook and the Rook is lost - I have no idea why he retreated.
Hello Master Ramirez! I love your videos and explanations! Excellent! I have a question... I got caught off guard in the opening with an aggressive move that I did handle but it threw me into totally unfamiliar territory. I'd love a hint if you are willing to share 😊Here's what happened... I was playing black and on White's 3rd move I got stumped! E4... D6 Nf3.... Nf6 Then white played E5!! I ended up not taking and responding ...Nd5 He took d6 and I responded and I took back Cd6 (He then went Be4 and I counted Be6 and I was in a new world I had never exploded before 😊... Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thank you either way! Appreciatively, Mike
Hi Robert, thanks for the video, nice ideas, finally something I can memorize quickly and use right in the game... I wonder why white in the game on 23:40 didnt play after ...a6, Nc7 with an immediate threat going to e6, forking queen and rock ruin all black efforts of attack on king, what you think?
I am 1300 and exclusively play King's Indian. The most common move I have to deal with is white bishop g5. Sometimes followed with the queen on the same diagonal so they can take my dark color bishop by attacking it on h6. I guess this is ok if the center is locked because the dark colored bishop doesn't do much on a king's side attack? In either case bishop g5 is annoying because it locks my e7 pawn otherwise my knight is pinned to my queen. and i really don't like pushing my pawn to h6 because i'm not really kicking out the bishop, if anything it feels more annoying after he moves to h4 or f4. Because of this I usually play pawn to h5 which engine likes sometimes and I'm going queen b6 or a5. Attacking white's b pawn or pinning the knight on c3 to the white king. Also admittedly the king's side attack in the king's indian while the center is locked is super difficult for someone in my rating, because there's usually only 1-2 moves per turn that are winning and they are not easy to spot especially in blitz.
Hello! Make sure you review the entire playlist on the Pirc (1.e4, d6) and on the King's Indian Defense (1.d4, Nf6). Here is a lesson in particular you might find useful 👍 ua-cam.com/video/LO1Tkje_qvk/v-deo.html
I just started using the Pirc instead of the Czech Pirc. seems to work better for me. i often felt cramped and sometimes just got smothered and steamrolled. I ran about 500 games (bout 50% win rate) or so with Czech Pirc but not so much with Pirc. Seems i get a bit more breathing room but still tend to adapt a bit of Czech Pirc into the Pirc, such as pawn C6. Overall, i like this better I think.
I'm really happy I found your videos on the pirc, especially the czech pirc! I'm a very new (and low rated) player and was just using K.I.D as black. I feel like I took two steps back trying to work in some more pirc ideas but I'm having a lot of fun exploring those lines. Thank you for the lessons!

1:25 what do we do if they attack the knight and the pawn because if we take the pawn they can just take back with the pawn and the knight will still be in danger.
@15:01- After Qg5 you moved Rg1! what if at that stage instead of Rg1 What Queen moves to a8? Your Bishop had to move f8 and the game could have turned over! right?

Your courses are enough for becoming a IM , Yes I know I cant , But I love your course , Thanks Robert ❤️
Thanks for the video brotha! The Pirc is underrated honestly and hard to play against.
Glad to see you like the Pirc! 😎 Welcome to the club 💪
I've been trying the KID but I see that I'm running into Pirc scenarios. I can't wait to get into this series. Thank you for your great lessons.
So far I have been avoiding this defence but after watching these lessons I will give it a try while playing my next tournament. As for the correct pronunciation of the "Pirc" we should say [peertz] instead of [perk] 😀
Traxler's counter or just try and adapt to the liver with your pirc
Finally. A teaching more better than GothamChess
You are a very good Chess teacher. I like how you explain each variations slowly with repetitions. I think it helps to sink in the lessons which are hard to do from watching videos. The ideas behind the moves along with mental queues to help position choices are all excellent ways to absorb the lessons.
Thank you for your kind words, Giovanni! It means a lot to read feedback like yours. Please, let me know if you ever have any questions 👍
What if they push their e4 pawn very early when it’s defended by the d4 pawn? You are forced to take and/or move your knight.
Hello! Explanation is in the first comment I pinned 👍
This is a fantastic introduction to the pirc. It also shows how learning the KID is a complementary skill. NM Ramirez is one of the great chess teachers on UA-cam.
I agree wd you..❤ I only watch three guys channel in re-learning my chess, 1. Robi. 2. Daniel. 3. Eric. Thts sufficient for me. All of them are top notch. I appreciate them very much. Yet, among them Robi is the most friendly, I call him "peoples coach". (PS. Perunovic, aka. The butcher is another cool channel I love) ❤ Thx Again, Rob. ❤
I am looking at this from playing Dutch and Sicilian so the pawn breaks in both KID and Perc systems bring me back to familiar positions.
@@geethuvarghese9103 what channel is Eric?
It's so interesting to see another pirc nerd like myself. I have achieved 2300 using all these very ideas you show in your video. 😉 It's cool to memirize these openings, gives an edge in opening play
😅 welcome aboard! It would be nice to hear some tips from you. So, feel free to share them with the rest of us 👍😎
I want to learn from you too 😮😮
Just wanted to thank you for a beautifully instructive video aimed to educate people at beginners and intermediate level.
I love love love this video! This is the variation that I play the most! Classical! I've struggled with the struggle for controlling the e5 square and what to do from there with a clear strategy! This is pretty straightforward and well explained. You should be on Twitch!
I was getting chewed up in the middle and end but luckily it took a blunder for me in the last 10 seconds to get the win! Work in progress haha
Hello! Just keep it up and you will become an expert in this opening and similar [position types. Feel free to check out the other lessons on the Pirc and of course, let me know if you have any questions 👍
Thank you for this! The Pirc Defense is my favourite opening, and I've been looking for a Pirc video forever. You explain it perfectly, you got my sub!
You are more than welcome, Kai! Thank you for such a nice feedback. It means a lot 👍
Bg4 - 6:58
d5 (weakness) - 7:57
Be3 - 9:48
e5 ignored - 11:20
dxe5 - 12:43
d5 (locked pawn) - 20:02
c6 - 29:40
Thank you so much for these lessons! As a beginner who is using the Pirc, these videos are so helpful! I also really like that you keep the rest of the game in the analysis, it helps tremendously to see the middle game ideas and how to play after reaching a certain opening position :)
You are more than welcome! Glad to see you found some value in this lesson! 👍
Absolutely amazing video! Subscribed. I was always attracted to Pirc since Kasparov Topalov Immortal (Topalov lost, but before the genius sac he had a very cool position)
I mainly play the Pirc for Black and this video is amazing! I have made notes from here and I will study and implement these ideas into my games. Thank you very much!
I always struggle with black. This might improve my black game
when I first took a glance at the pirc I thought it is really hard and overwhelming to play with black, but now after watching your videos I started feeling confident enough with it... thank you!!
That's excellent to know! Please, let me know if you have any questions about it 👍
this is what i need. mid game explaination. i always dont know what to do after opening.
This is worth gold!
Had to subscribe to this channel immediately!
Thank you, Dan for your kind words. I really appreciate you took the time to provide your feedback 👍
You inspired me to play Pirc or KID when I play with black pieces
Wow so much information! I will have to rewatch this so many times xD thanks for the indepth guide!
You are welcome, Zalån! Do not worry too much about memorizing everything for now. Once you start using it, you will get a better feeling for it. This kind openings only require you to understand the main ideas and you will be fine. Have fun and let me know if you have any questions 👍
Gracias from this newbie! Would also love to know your favorite responses as white to this defense.

Nf3 and I thought hmm.. this is like a sicilian with black up a tempo, but then again it could be like playing the Pirc against the English with me up a tempo, I like how adaptable these openings are, thanks for sharing this with the world
i can't get over how fantastically thorough this video was! this has helped me prep for my first otb!
Hello! Glad you found value in this lesson. Thank you so much for providing your feedback 👍
Hello! Great video as usual😄😄 I have a doubt....for someone rated 1450 fide...should I prefer this pirc or czech pirc🤔🤔🤔
Thanks in advance!
Hello! I would recommend you try them both to see which one you like better. I like to start my students with the Czech first and then transition into the regular Pirc 👍
Such a great illustration of how to turn a stable opening into a winning attack. Thank you for sharing!
Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. It means a lot!
Probably the best teacher out there..
Great video. I'm 970 and couldn't have found you at a better time
That's great to hear, Ashwin! 👍
I watched this video ONE TIME. Immediately took what I could remember and tried it against a much higher rated player online.
CHECK MAKE in 19 moves.😂😂😂
I think I've found my new chess coach! Thank you for the instruction! 👍🏾
You are more than welcome! Keep it up and feel free to ask me any questions you might have 💪😎
Love your videos but do have a question on this one.
I watched only 2-3 videos after I reached 1100 as I thought I should at least be 1200 before moving forward
I like the Czech pirc more than this but will try this also . Tqs for your guidance sir
Nice! 💪 Keep it up and hope you enjoy the regular Pirc too 👍
I actually figured out this opening on my own . I used to call it the "fort opening"
A few month later I battled my teacher and he said it was called the pirc opening.
In the first game, you moved Qg5 to target the rook on c1. They can easily play Qa8+ and freeze your bishop. How should black respond?
Hello Paul! Good question. In that case, I would have done Bf8 followed by Kg7 and Bd6 👍
Love this video, thought I was playing kings Indian defense until lichess told me otherwise, love the variation walkthrough
Just a question, in the tranposition into a kings indian, the light squared bishop is quite a central piece in my understanding, What is your thoughts on giving that bishop early. nvm dident watch long enough :D
Hello Rami! Thanks a lot for your comment! I really appreciate the feedback 👍 Feel free to ask me any questions you may have as you go through the other lessons!
Thank you so much I love the pirc and KID but always get stuck mid game and no one else gives good mid game plans
13:18 sir instead re1 if they play rad1 then you cant take ne4 and play d5 what to do in that time ???
At 15:07 what will happen if queen to a8 check then bishop b4
After a6, what if white played Nc7 attacking your Rook, then Nd6 forking queen and rook?
Hello! Our rook from g7 can take it 👍
I am pirc player with 0 knowledge after watching this atleast having some knowledge. Thanks for the valuable information.
You are more than welcome! Feel free to ask me any questions you might have 👍
Hi,
Please can you tell me how to play against the mad dog line it goes Bc4 and Qe2 the proper name is the kholmov system, I can't seem to defend against it can you help please. Thanks for all your videos you are an inspiration to all chess players 👍
Hello Lynn! Once we finish learning about the King's Indian Defense, we will have a few lessons on middle and endgames, but soon after we will cover other lines of the Pirc including that one.
In the interim, you can play it like this:
1.e4, d6 2.d4, Nf6 3.Nc3, g6 4.Bc4, Bg7 5.Qe2 (I assume this is what you mean) 5..., Nc6 (attacking d4) 6.Nf3, Bg4 (pinning the f3 knight so we can take Nxd4 and threaten their queen along the way) Then, when they defend d4, we can insert e5 or even 0-0.
Please, let me know if this makes sense 👍
Great introduction to the pirc. Thank you.
You're UA-cam videos are so helpful thanks
My pleasure! Thank you for your feedback. It means a lot 👍
Wow wow wow - subscribed! I love the way you teach, and i already play the King's Indian, and the Nimzo-Larsen as white. This. Is. Perfect. Thank you!!!
Thank you! Glad you liked it. Let me know if you ever have any questions 👍
Thank you dude! i just had my first best game (against a 1300) using the pirc def against the english opening in a blitz game. He resigned as he ran out of time. Btw, i'm 1200 on blitz.
You are welcome, Draeze! Glad you liked this set-up. Let me know if you ever have any questions as you go over the other lessons. Feel free to check out the King's Indian Defense playlist too. You might like it as it is the same set-up, but it is vs 1.d4 instead of 1.e4. As a matter of fact, you might have played the King's Indian Defense if it was vs the English 👍
What a cool explanation, I really loved the way you told the logic behind every movement. Much thanks for making me playing this defense!!!
I'm playing French and kid, I'm looking for new one..and i found this ... you're teaching very well👏👏👏... keep going 👍
Hello! I think it was because my Rook from g7 could have taken along with my queen 👍
@@NMRobertRamirez That makes sense.
I really enjoy playing Indian King Defense and I said you know what, I am learning pirc defense. Ever second of this video worth completly it.
Hello Albert! Welcome aboard 💪 Feel free to ask me any questions you might have 👍
Hello Master Ramirez!
E4... D6
Nf3.... Nf6
Then white played E5!!
I ended up not taking and responding ...Nd5
He took d6 and I responded and I took back Cd6
(He then went Be4 and I counted Be6 and I was in a new world I had never exploded before 😊...
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
Thank you either way!
Appreciatively,
Mike
I can feel my elo go up while watching your videos
😎😁👍
Omg this video is so good ty for making it
Gracias desde la Isla de Puerto Rico, por tus enseñanzas...
Es un placer, Luis! Saludos 👍
Hello Peter! You are more than welcome 👍 Regarding your question, Nc7 would not work since we have a rook on g7 😎
I said the same thing! I was totally blind about the rook on g7 lol
When you attack the night on B5 what's your answer to night c7 attacking the Rook then night to e6 forking queen and rook.
Hello! Our rook from g7 can take it 👍😎
Thank you so much, it was very helpful! I subbed
You are more than welcome! Glad to see you found some value in this lesson. Thanks for subscribing 👍
This tutorial is the standard by which others should be evaluated. Bravo!

2:38 when I do the pirc they always play pon e6 attack my Knight??
Hello! You will find the answer on the first video I pinned 👍
You r a Great Teacher
Thank you!
Good morning and Thank you, I just hit 1700 following your plans on the pirc. I never had a system for black before. Thanks again and keep up the good work.

1:25 what do we do if they attack the knight and the pawn because if we take the pawn they can just take back with the pawn and the knight will still be in danger.
Hello Tyson! Here is the exact moment where I explain it. Hope it helps 👍 ua-cam.com/video/soHgoqfsh8Q/v-deo.html
@15:01- After Qg5 you moved Rg1! what if at that stage instead of Rg1 What Queen moves to a8? Your Bishop had to move f8 and the game could have turned over! right?
