    Big fan of Math Rock. Here's 5 albums from non-english speaking countries (mainly Japan tbh) that you might be interested in if you're just getting into Math Rock: 'Unutella' by Nuito, 'T H E' by tricot, 'Angle' by Elephant Gym, 'Cubic' by LITE, and my personal favourite 'For Long Tomorrow' by toe.

    Great list, very happy to see Don Caballero, Hella and Tera Melos on here. I'll be sure to check out Piglet. I've never heard of them and after all, that's one reason for me to watch your videos, to find new music.
    One of my personal favourites is Giraffes? Giraffes!' album More Skin With Milk-Mouth. I really like the mixture of these incredibly fast and chaotic parts and the calm, melodic, almost post-rock-ish parts. Their subsequent releases didn't do much for me, but this one I still go back to on a regular basis.

    So a friend just sent me a link to this after a conversation we just had the other night. I’m so happy you included Piglet. I’m not familiar with pavlo but the rest of the bands are pretty spot on in this list but man Piglet has always stood out to me and I just lucky and was introduced to them about the time lava land came out. After seeing the videos of them playing a house party popped up on UA-cam it’s pretty obvious these kids were like fresh out of high school. It’s like they popped up and put out probably my favorite album of this genre and then were just gone. I may have not dig deep enough but I wasn’t able to find anything these kids did afterwards which blows my mind considering how insanely good they were. I love that album so much and it’s one of those you can lay on people that aren’t into the math stuff and they can still love and appreciate the album. The one other you didn’t mention that I hold close to the heart is cinemachanica. Those guys are super talented and super nice guys that I’ve had a lot of fun with.

      Have you listened to the newest EP from Piglet? So good! I actually like it much more than Lava Land. Polvo is also one of my favorites, I’d recommend their album “In Prism.” If you like the fun, playful and sometimes chill sounds of Piglet then I’d recommend checking out COVET and Mice Parade!

  • @perudolux

    Have you listened to 'The View from this Tower' by Faraquet? I think it's an underrated Math Rock album and an underrated Dischord band.

    • @deepcuts
      @deepcuts  8 років тому +20

      A great record, I wish the guys had gone on to release more. When I get around to my post hardcore video they'll probably have a shoe in (arguably as much math as they are post hardcore)

    • @RalphLindsen
      @RalphLindsen 8 років тому +4

      Medications is pretty damn great as well. It's two former members of Faraquet. David (singer/guitarist) was also the Drummer for the DC band Smart Went Crazy. Their last album is so good, but also really bitter as it was recorded while the band was falling apart. Underrated.
      In general I like math rock but sometimes it gets a bit too cerebral for my taste, I tend to prefer bands who extensively use math-rock elements but without it being too much in the foreground. Stuff like Drive Like Jehu (one of my all time favorites, but I guess it's closer to post-hardcore than mathrock), Deerhoof, etc. Especially with Drive Like Jehu I think the balance is perfect. The math parts make the songs more interesting, builds tension (some of the songs are quite long, Do You Compute, In Lau), keeps you on edge when needed, but it doesn't overshadow the emotional core of the music.
      Once again, a great vid.

    • @Brokenhill42

      I look forward to the video. I love Post-Hardcore.

    • @Brokenhill42
      @Brokenhill42 8 років тому

      Thanks for the recommendation. I'll check it out. Bitter indeed can be great sometimes. The 2nd/final album from screamo band You And I also recorded while falling apart and I think it amplified the intensity in a good way.

    • @RalphLindsen

    Another great video about an under-appreciated genre. My list is a little older and conventional:
    1 - Slint - Spiderlands (arguable proto-post-rock/post-hardcore)
    2 - Shellac - 1000 Hurts
    3 - Don Cab - What Burns Never Returns
    4 - June of 44 - Four Great Points
    5 - Unwound - The Future of What/Repetition

  • @Syobnaf
    @Syobnaf 3 роки тому

    Not sure I agree with these picks, yeah they’re all classics of the genre but outside of piglet, I’m not sure I would recommend these to newcomers. My picks would be:
    TTNG - Animals
    Standards - Standards
    Invalids - Fulfillment (or their upcoming album in all likelihood)
    Covet - Effloresce
    Chon - Chon
    Maybe some people wouldn’t consider these all pure math rock, but I guess I would just disagree with them. Delta Sleep’s stuff is an honorable mention.

    Don Caballero's drummer, Damon Che, was a big fan of SCTV at the time of their formation. Joe Flaherty's character Guy Caballero, who portrayed the station manager on the show, inspired the band name. That should help with the pronunciation.

    • @chano1283
      @chano1283 3 роки тому

      To add to this explanation, the character, Don Caballero’s name was intentionally mispronounced, because in Spanish, “Don Caballero” literally means “Mr. Gentleman”. 😂

    I love your top 5 albums series. I would also love to see a top 5 experimental records. Although "experimental" is a vague term, I'm still sure you can find strange albums like Animal collective's strawberry jam or halfaxa from grimes, which are both good and identifiably experimental. Also, you have top-notch quality in every video you've made so far, I hope you can be as big as other music critics like spectrum pulse or even needle drop (both great channels btw, you should check them out).

    • @deepcuts

      Thanks a lot Tawfiq! Man 'experimental' is a minefield huh - I definitely will be exploring more experimental music as the channel progresses, but I would want to dedicate more than one video on it since there are so many different types of experimental music. I know Mark and Anthony's work very well, top reviewers!

    I've been living under a rock until two years ago and having noticed that music has such a vast branch of genres/sub-genres. I'm genuinely happy with my taste in music now but the older albums (older releases) that I listen to now lack a nostalgic feel to them which kinda sucks lel, nonetheless still happy to have finally discovered someone who can rush me up with the basics, put things into place and get me a few recommendation while I'm at it.

    • @brandonvu5429
      @brandonvu5429 7 років тому

      Jeffrey Speciale Imo Patagonian Rats is their weakest album (though Nick's guitar work is probably at his best). How they mixed of technical playing with catchy pop just didn't work for me. I think X'ed Out did it perfectly, and so did Untitled and Drugs but they got to grow on you to get that melodic satisfaction.

    • @gonknodge
      @gonknodge 7 років тому

      Brandon Vu Patagonian has a couple tracks I dont care for (Westham United, In Citrus Heights) but that album houses some of the most instrumentally mature and incredible work imo. Tracks like Party with Gina, Trident Tail, Aped, A New Uniform/Patagonia are all insanely well written and dont get me started on Clardy's drum work on that record. Dude is a monster

    Interesting picks and well thought out vid. The case for Polvo is always a hard one to make but appreciate the inclusion as they often get overlooked. Just wanted to point out that Ian Williams (-son) was not a founding member of Don Cab.. as Damon Che loves to point to with his continued use of the band name after Ian and Eric Emm left. Will be checking out your other vids for sure.

      @deepcuts  8 років тому

      Hi Shaun, thanks for watching! Yeah I don't know why I got Ian's name wrong, stumbled over it then blurted it our incorrectly, good work on my part! I didn't say he founded Don Cab though, I said he went on later to found Battles.

    Great choices given the million you could choose from. A long time fan of all, especially the Don Cab and Piglet. Even though it's DC Emo, I might have included Kerosene 454's Came By to Kill Me or Shiner's Lula Divinia (I always loved the transition between Sideways and Pinned). On the more difficult side there is U.S. Maple, and for very early MR check out Captain Beefheart's song "Veteran's Day Poppy" from Trout Mask Replica. Great job.

    • @deepcuts
      @deepcuts  7 років тому +1

      Thanks Craig! I'll probably do a midwest/DC Emo video at some point, because there are a slew of great bands that aren't math enough for this video but fit perfectly into that - Rites of Spring, Cap'n Jazz, American Football etc. I haven't heard Kerosene 454, off to do that right now!

      deep cuts Yeah, they kinda sound like Jawbox but more instrumental sections. Yes, there are so many directions to go, with rarer ones like Hurl, Roadside Monument, or trendier ones like Slint , Braid, Promise Ring, and the Kinsella brothers' stuff, all equally great. Thanks for your podcast giving me memories of old and I want to check out the ones you did on areas that I'm less familiar.
