  • I currently find myself in the possession of an iPhone 11 Pro Max, GoPro Hero 9 and ZOOM Q2n 4K. This video is an extremely quick - rough and ready demo of each whilst I play the Kawai ES 920. Listening to the playback, there's not much in it. Each product has its uses, though I'm looking at it from the perspective of vlogging. So sound and picture are paramount and ease of use. In hindsight, the iPhone 11 Pro Max does an excellent job, it handles the light and sound in my conservatory very well, and file transfer done via Airdrop (really easy) to my MacBookPro. GroPro Hero 9 is probably my least favourite sound recording (but it is an action camera built for extreme activities - not recording piano playing - I still love it though!). ZOOM Q2n 4K has the most natural and high fidelity sound but requires better lighting as the picture is dark - next time I'll use some lights! What do you think?

Incorrect comparison. If you were shooting a kite in the sky outside the window in this video, the iphone would fail, because there is just a white spot. GoPro with the ability to record in 5K and ZOOM Q2n 4K would simply kill the iphone. Given the possibility of high-quality STEREO recording, ZOOM Q2n 4K is the absolute leader here.

No way we can compare a smartphone's built-in camera (particularly latest iPhones from Apple, a software-hardware prowess co.) to standalone cameras like goPro and Zoom.
Those standalone camera lacks the scene analytic algorithms (stock, out-of-box) to understand that a human is the subject of the shooting, and being able to separate the subject from other moving and non-moving objects, thus explains why visual part of the video from iPhone is superb and brightly lit for the pianist who's in comparatively shaded room compared to the garden.
Believe the intro (0:00 - 0:50) was shot on iPhone too?
    Above all, great play indeed.

The Q2n is a good quick and dirty unit, but it needs a fair amount of light. The exposure conditions that you gave the Q2n were harsh -- the windows made you strongly backlit as shot, and the Q2n exposed for the background. It will be much better in a more evenly lit situation. This said, I own two Q2n units, and they're good mics with OK cameras grafted to them :)

Zoom sounds the best which makes sense as it has the best mic config. iPhone looks the best. You'd need to blast some more light to get that Zoom camera to work I think.

Thanks for this quick video😊 I have an iPhone 12 Pro Max, but Zoom sent me a FREE Q2N 4K as an artist endorsement for my band I play in, I’ve not used the Zoom yet as I’m waiting for an SD card to arrive.. from watching your video, the Zoom seems terribly dark 🤷🏻‍♂️🤦‍♂️

Yes I agree. The lightning in my conservatory really threw the Zoom. The light coming from outside made it over compensate, making it look very dark inside. There are more settings in the Zoom to help with difficult lighting scenarios but I haven’t tried them. The day I recorded this it was really bright outside. I think It would have performed better with more uniform light. Next time I’ll use a fill in light to ensure picture is bright. I just used the default settings on this occasion. Another consideration is not being able to see the image you’re recording as the screen is on the rear. I have purchased a small 10 inch monitor which you can link via a HDMI output on the Q2n but I haven’t tried that out yet either😂 I’ll get round to it eventually. I have belief in this product but it needs more planning to get a good result.

@@tubertraxx6965 "There are more settings in the Zoom to help with difficult lighting scenarios but I haven’t tried them" - and this is the answer why your vid look bad - on q2n you are more possibilities to set, then on iphone and goPro

Thanks for the video, quick and up the point. The more videos I watch the least convinced I am on what to get! I’m a bass player and basically just need something to film/record live gigs, for social media. Need portability, good image quality and good sound. I’m torn between a GoPro hero 7 and the Zoom Q2n. The video on the zoom often seems lifeless for some reason. Even considering the GoPro with external microphone. Any advice anyone?

The main reason the Zoom looked a bit darker was the angle and where it was set. If you compare prices, IT IS ONLY the ZOOM at hundreds less against
the GoPro and much more against Apple. You can buy a few Zooms for one GoPro and many more for an Apple. I would recommend a Samsung for under $250 and a ZOOM for less than the price of the GoPr.o Or three times the kits compared to the Apple. I don`t know why this bloke didn`t mention anything
I did. I wonder who he is working for. To add: He actually says that the picture is dark on the ZOOM, but if he had just turned it to the right a bit it would have lightened. He is obviously a bit of an amateur. My personal opinion would be to buy a small Sony/Panasonic/Canon $K in the $500 range and get the best quality if a regular-size video camera is interesting for you. At $189 it is ONLY ZOOM. I would say, "Everyone should have one... or two."
