Called the ‘Refugee Cantata’ because of its heartfelt appeal on behalf of the wretched and disposessed poor. ‘Bring those that are in misery….into your house’. ‘It depicts the wretched ones who are being supported’ (Schweitzer).
+Gianluca Cagnani, this has been known as Refugee Cantata for quite a long time. In 1731 protestants were BANNED from their lands around Salzburg, but where to go? King of Prussia saved the day by offering to resettle these protestants in northern Europe, more then 20 thousand people went on a long march during year 1732 across what is now Germany to get to their destination. The first line of this cantata (believe to be from 1726) mentions "share your bread with the hungry and open your house to others" etc and similar charitable ideas. I believe this is why it was associated with these religious refugees which of course had to eat and rest along the way, so they had help from local people during their journey. Hundreds die during this long trek. You can read more about this on wikipedia, search for Salzburg Protestants.
This seems upsetting, which is certainly understandable. Wikipedia cites an early 20th century British Bach scholar, William Gillies Whittaker. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brich_dem_Hungrigen_dein_Brot,_BWV_39But I think the first, and ultimate, source would be the text of the cantata -- and its sources in Isaiah, chapter 58 and Hebrews, chapter 13. In fact, it doesn't refer solely to refugees -- its address is even broader, to "the hungry, ... those who are in misery."

The church is beautiful...where is it ?
It's the St. Thomas Church in Leipzig where Bach was employed the last years of his life.
@@TiaEdwina Thanks for the information !
Perfect speed and phrasing. Gardiner's is not bad but too slow and the music tends to not stick together.
This is one of the most beautiful music utterances ever - perfectly executed.
You hear the Chaconne and Bach's spirit, perfectly melded.
Gardiner is not bad... sounds like joke, sorry....
