one of my favorite things about this movie is that it doesn’t really provide any sense of time. when you’re a kid, summer days just blend together - i loved that they were able to integrate that feeling into the film. it felt so authentic and nostalgic to me.
I don't know how it would be nostalgic, but it is certainly authentic.
George Daugherty because it is mostly told through the eyes of children, it reminds you of what it feels like to be a child on summer break.

Man I interpreted that ending completely differently. I thought the jarring cut and the "implication" of it all was just to show that this did not happen. It was almost like a dream sequence, something that they've wanted to do, or the director making a statement with the strange ending.
I mean how would two kids even find their way to disneyland and sneak in like that? I purely found it to be an artistic statement and not based in reality at all.

I actually didn't and went straight to: that was jarring, but it's interesting how they finally slapped us in the face with the Disney thing where it has been talked about/worked around. I'm glad you just pointed that out. I thought "no way" but forgot to add the why they went with the whole "no way" idea

J. M i’m not exactly sure if the directors confirmed this but a lot of people have agreed with that theory. it explains the abrupt change in the way of filming and how they got in disney in the first place, (they didn’t)

Let Me Explain why aren’t you verified yet?
i think the ending is Moonie’s imagination and what she would want to happen. the camera change is off putting but i think it works great to show this is not part of the actual story. while watching the film, you want Moonie to get a happy ending, so it’s kind of like “here’s your happy ending, it’s not really what you wanted, is it?” a very powerful statement in my opinion.
Theory is they’re at that field.

I legit thought orange world, twisty treat and the gift shop with the magician head were visual effects. It didn't make sense to me that such werid shaped ugly buldings could actually exist.
One word: Florida.
Yep, there are like 3 or 4 of those weird wizard shops, they're horrific to look at. If I can remember correctly there is a giant baby one too. They fall in the same sort of line of the hundreds of "Disney gift shops", these bizarre discount/clearance tourist traps scattered across central Florida, but I'm pretty sure no one really goes in those places.

There's two near where I live. One is a huge purple octopus and the other is a shark, and you enter the store through the mouth.

This movie does child acting right by making them improvise. I can definitely see some talent in the actors as well but part of what makes that so great happens to be the improv because kids should have some freedom to do whatever they want especially in a film like this that allows them to.
This is one of the most real and genuine films I've ever seen. For much of my childhood, I lived in the "pseudo-poverty" (I'm not sure if that's a real word) that's depicted in here, and so much of it hits close to home. During a bunch of the scenes, I kept getting flashbacks of those exact same things happening to me. And no just the situations themselves, but the way all the characters reacted to the situation. It all just felt so real.
What do you mean by pseudo-poverty? Pretty sure it’s just regular poverty. Pseudo-poverty implies they aren’t poor.
The ending is Moonee’s imagination. This is why the camera change.

Fr man. Even stayed in a hotel that is seen in the background of one of the shots. I feel like having lived in FL and having been to Orlando (and those locations) MULTIPLE times before i watched it made me really uneasy. Beautiful film, incredible story, but I felt almost sick after watching it. I’ve found one common perspective on the movie is that the story is generally optimistic, as it follows the story of kids making good out of a bad situation. Yet the entire time I felt as if something horrible was going to happen at any moment, and it felt extremely pessimistic the entire film. I think now it’s because we are seeing a cycle take place- we can assume Haley was similar to Monee as a child. Although Monee is happy now, she will almost inevitably be in the same shoes as an adult. It was depressing, watching this scene take place. Maybe we have a deeper perspective having been there so often but man it really hit me hard

As for the ending of the film, did you consider that the function of the jarring iPhone footage (I know there was a practical reason) worked as a formal signal that we were leaving “reality”? By this I mean to say that it’s possible to interpret the ending as a surreal moment divorced from reality and living solely in the minds of the girls. Ultimately, I think I’d prefer the film to stay out of Disney world and have it solely work as an inaccessible place for the characters, but having the ending as a surreal moment adds an interesting dimension to the film. It’s sort of clear that the moonie and the other kids use their imagination frequently and aren’t fully aware of how bad their situation may be. I think the final moment with Jancy and Moonie is meant to show them choosing fantasy over a harsh reality.
That's exactly what I was gonna comment. The way I interpret it, it's Moonie day-dreaming.

I’m a little sad I haven’t seen many people bring up willem dafoe in this I adored his performance he felt like a familiar almost neighbor or family friend I can’t put my finger on it but yeah he cared so much about Mooney and the kids and it really pulled at my heartstrings watching it
I feel you. He’s easily the most likable adult in the movie by a mile, but he really has no competition. Mooney’s mom is complete trash, and she’s the main adult character besides Dafoe.
This movie broke my heart 💔. Brooklyns performance was the best child performance I’ve ever seen. She’s incredibly natural & honest.
When a video or news article starts with "Florida" you know it's gonna be something special
The fact that they ran off to Disney World was such a beautiful and bleak ending. The kids were escaping to a happy fantasy world for what seemed the last time ever, before having their lives changed. It felt like the last happy moment in Moonies childhood, the moment before she would have to grow up and face the harsh reality of her life

Florida theme parks are WWWWWAAAAAAYYYYYY better than LA theme parks. Florida’s parks are bigger and more invested in the world building through its architecture. LA’s parks are small and genuinely boring. #teamfloridaeventhoughimnotfromflorida

benjamin ferrer I’ve oddly never dealt with mosquitos at theme parks. I thought the main complaint from a Californian would be the humidity, which is fair to complain about. But I’ll take the mosquitoes and humidity for Disney World, honestly
Agree. Dont know where he gets this assessment . Same with the ridiculous idea of Californian beaches being better than Florida beaches. I am a Floridian and know we got some depraved stuff goin on w/o doubt, but we do have some good things too. its why alot of Florida man don't actually come from Florida. LOL
I disagree with L.A 's parks being better almost everyone I know who's a big Disney fan who has visited both parks and say Disney World is much better than Disneyland as well as the Orlando Universal. Also there are so many beautiful beaches in Florida I recently went to Treasure Island beach and it was gorgeous Clearwater Beach was a beautiful beach but it's become too much of a tourist area. But I agree I have no idea why people come here. The other Disney locations are located in such interesting places, L.A, Paris, Tokyo those places are way cooler and I would rather go there there's nothing interesting in Orlando so I agree with that
I agree. Fla always has at least 3 beaches every year in top 10 ratings. Never seen any from California represented. passagrille is often in top 3.
This movie reminded me of my little sister. My heart aches for the mom (not taking up for her HORRIFIC parenting) we’re upper middle class, private school family, we grew up in a nice home. But our parents were constantly at war with one another and took it out on us. I learned to block it out at a young age, she didn’t. She eventually became similar to moonee’s mom and ultimately died from an od. She wasn’t always like that, horrific things made her into that and she paid for our parents mess with her life. Moonee’s mom didn’t wake up like that one day, she was created.
I used to live in walking distance of the places where the movie was shot. I actually loved living there, but considering I moved there from Pakistan of all places.. I wasn't picky about where I was living.
As a Floridian that used to live in Kissimmee I thought it was pretty cool to see all these places I’ve been to and driven by in the film.

While anyone can review bad movies, you can make reviews of good movies interesting as well, and you still show the nuance of the good and bad in each movie. I think the reason Jancey was as distant as she was was for that exact reason. At the end of the movie Moonie has no friends really left to run with so when she says to Jancey "you're my best friend" its true, in a mirror of what I feel a lot of peoples best friends have started from, being alone.
One of my favourite movies of past year! Such an atmospheric and beautifully crafted piece of cinema.

This film is a great film. I loved it. It is so simple, yet brilliant in its execution, touching and has a well-developed narrative and characterisation. I watched it twice.

I watched your video right when it first came out 5 years ago now. During all this time I have procrastinated watching this movie. Putting it off and putting it off some more, fearing that the movie just wouldn’t stand up to your review. Until I recently decided, “ah to hell with it, let’s just see how it goes.” It’s easily one of my favorite movies. I spent many of my childhood summers in the Hillsborough/Orlando areas, and this movie is pumped full of all the nostalgia. Between the vibrancy of the colors, the croaking of the frogs, the cicadas chirping. I could somehow feel the damp and sticky hot air coming off the screen, infecting my room. The fun yet consistently oversized/long t-shirts or the bright tank tops sparked a memory of all the times I wore those same things. Moonee’s tearful goodbye to Jancey at the end also stirred an old memory of feeling like I never had enough time to tell my summer friends goodbye, before I had to leave for the school year. Although not a direct relation, I still found comfort and understanding while watching it. This movie is tragic and heartbreaking, but the sheer hope and wonder that is equally injected made it worthwhile. Your video was my first exposure to this film, and I just wanted to thank you for making this review, as otherwise, I probably wouldn’t have thought twice about skipping over The Florida Project forever. Now I get to come back and understand everything that you’ve said. It feels like I’ve reunited with a little bit of childhood that you lose at the end of every summer.

i'm late but I just saw this movie and I agree on what you said about Mooney and Jancy. Their friendship happened fast compared to Mooney and Scooty's but I think it just shows how quick kids are with making friends
Even though you got off topic in the beginning in the video talking about how Florida sucks, but that was probably the most relatable stuff I’ve ever heard about Florida. (I’m a couple hours away from Orlando)
First time I heard of "Florida Man" it was a story where drug users tried to eat the faces of bystanders... After that, the adventures of Florida Man just became crazier and crazier.
Of course, I did later fund out that Florida has that one peculiarity in its laws that is exploited by news organisations the world over for sensationalist fodder of news, and that Florida actually isn't that much crazier than other states... It just don't hide it.
So Florida Man is the legend that lives on. One never can predict what he's up to next.
Orlando just sounds like Tallahassee but with theme parks
i live an hour away from orlando and i just watched this movie with my dad, he said that he recognized a lot of the streets in the movie that he had seen on the way to disney before, so that’s cool!! also unrelated but the frogs made me nostalgic too! across from my house there’s a pond and those frogs are LOUD.
I live in Florida too this is a great example of the people & personalities here. Tons of lower class people. A lot don't even have jobs they just lounge around on patio chairs all day.
The best thing about Orlando is the shuttle that takes you from the airport to the RonJon's at Cocoa Beach

I grew up in Daytona going from hotel to hotel and this felt really familiar from dcf talking to kids in the halls and being outside miles from wherever we were staying with other kids I had just met and learning each other stories

Your review on Orlando was incredibly accurate, right down to the point where you couldn't even watch the movie when it was released because it was almost impossible to find it in theatre. I loved the movie, and disagree with the filming of the last scene. The music in that scene really made it perfect. It really felt like it was filmed by people who lived in Orlando their whole lives.
Living in New York , was raised in Orlando . I love central Florida and miss it plenty, beautiful people (inside and out) , great parks, great subdivisions and affordable .
The review starts @ 3:29 . Even after almost 12 years in the FD/EMS field, I don’t have as many negative things to say about Orlando compared to Florida man 🙄. Overall though, it’s a fair review of the movie. Plus bonus if you also saw Tangerine 🍊

DUDE! I live in St. Augustine (I go to Flagler College there), I've traveled down to Orlando a few times and with very little time spent there I somehow got a very similar impression. Hilarious stuff!

Yeah, Orlando sucks. The i4 through there was really scary the first time I drove through it. It doesn't help that it was at night, in the rain. It also doesn't help that Florida doesn't have god damn street lights.

in the late 90s orlando was a pop music recruiting spot. nsync, backstreet boys, mandy moore etc. when I did uber in the area a couple years back, every like 1 out 20 passengers claimed to have met or worked with babyface edmonds lol.
Oh, I Iived in Orlando and Kissimmee and worked at both Disney and Sea World,, and your comments on the cities really made me laugh.
The Florida Project was filmed on 192 in Kissimmee, outside of Disney. Kissimmee's slogan after the huge theme parks were built was "Gateway to the Worlds." hahaha And before Disney was built in the mid-70s, Kissimmee was known as the Cow Capital of Florida, and the town's biggest event was the Silver Spurs Rodeo. The area had a nudist colony, orange groves, watermelon farms, Gatorland, and the Tupperware Headquarters. Totally bananas and very Florida. After Disney descended, businesses sprang up to support the Magic Kingdom...and lots and lots of cheap, but colorful, hotels began to align 192...hotels like the Magic Castle.
Anyway, the Magic Castle Hotel is miles from the Magic Kingdom because Disney World owns miles of property surrounding its parks. The kids couldn't just run over to the park. A highway winds its way to an enormous parking area where shuttles take tourists to the entrance. I know it's a little thing, but the movie ended on this scene...the kids running to Disney from the highway in Kissimmee. Perhaps it is just a fantasy ending, but still...it bugged me...after so much realism. The kids would have to hitchhike to the parking lot, jump on a tram, and then somehow, sneak through the highly secure entrance of the park. (I know, I know. Get a life. But it irked me.)
For the realistic acting by the little girl, the colors, the feel, all is forgiven.

I actually completely disagree with the opinion about the camerwork to me. I remember having a really positive response, and emotional swell in response to the "shitty" camera work paired with that music. It felt very spontaneous and escapist. I usually have handheld camera work but I think it really worked here.

I can't refer to this whole Orlando criticism, because I’m from Europe and I never visited the USA. It is very interesting to see American director Sean Baker and you especially contradicting this vision of the American dream, which in my country still exists and a lot of people are envying even those Florida inhabitants.
