Get ready for ATTACK THE BLOCK movie reaction/commentary Wednesday! COME AND SEE will be Thursday! :) Enjoy the day!
That movie is good. There accents are really thick so it may be a little hard to understand what they're saying sometimes
I got them perfectly!
Attack The Block:Singular Joy! You have to check out Kin.
My favorite scene is when the camera focuses on Moonie in the hotel buffet and you realize this is her mom trying to take in her essence as much as she can before she loses her. The first time I saw that I gasped.
This movie has some of the best child acting I've seen. They don't act exaggerated or whimsical so it doesn't seem fake.
It was top tier!
Definitely agree! Along with Lia McHugh's gut wrenching performance in The Lodge, these children knocked it out of the ballpark.
I think a lot of their scenes were raw footage because of how hard it would be to have a kid focus on such a scale. I *think* there is qn interview whete they talk about it.
They let the child actors improve half the movie!!!
more movies should do this and then they wouldn’t have such terrible child acting
'Kids' is another good documentary shot movie. Then do 'Bully'
Just got done watching Old Boy, PLEASE check out I Saw The Devil.
Mistress America reaction pls
FUN FACT!! That scene of Willem Dafoe with the birds was purely improvised
Hahaha that’s what it felt like!
lol of course 🤣😭
I remember that crying scene at the end absolutely wrecking me the first time I saw this; that feeling of being so confused and scared and you just don't know what else to do but cry in such a deep way. Great movie!
Agreed!!
When she started crying in the end, I started bawling. I just felt so bad and wanna hug her. She must’ve felt so confused 😭.
I was born and raised in Florida, and while my upbringing was a little more "stable", this film is sooo nostalgic. The color-grading makes it feel more accurate to life. The weather, the people, the scenes... like the way the kids wander around in the overgrown areas out of boredom, and the sandhill cranes (these love to block traffic).
As to the authenticity to the acting, if I'm not mistaken much of the cast is green. This was their first film. If you're into it, you should check out some interviews with the the young lead actress and Willem Dafoe; she is so sharp and he is clearly so impressed and proud.
That’s so interesting to hear the nostalgia being brought to you from this film!
In “the young lead actress” do you mean Bria or Brooklynn?
are there geese there too that block traffic?
If you grow lower middle class, this will hit differently. Especially if you moved up in life social economically. Literally hit me like bricks and reminded me of when I moved to the US and how we lived the first few years
yeah. couldn't have said it any better
As someone from florida this is genuinely what the Orlando/tampa area is like outside of the suburbs, when you get towards the touristy areas there’s a bunch of motels with people that basically live there, this so accurately depicts poverty in florida it’s crazy, great commentary both about the movie and the technical filmmaking :) will be subbing!
A flat out masterpiece, and one of the best films of the previous decade. Sean Baker is THE guy to look for in the future.
This film was so textured!
Don't sleep on Jonah Hill & Mid90s!
I am a florida project kid! I am a motel, clothes hanging, microwave dinner ass kid. Shit was awesome tbh people would come drop toys they don't want. Churches donate food. Yeah it was second hand and stale but you learn to make your own mini life there. Almost every year somebody kids get taken away that was normal. I grew up knowing now that it was unfortunate but I had the most fun. Never knew what you were gonna get. One time a big ass box of legos was donated and my siblings and I went to war with the other kids to get it (we won) but we just ended up sharing in the end. I just threw that box out last year. I played with my elementary school crush in the same motel, messing with the same legos.
I really love the bright and colorful facades of the buildings contrasted with the dark and gloomy rooms and lives once you go inside. The dark underbelly of a "magical" place. Perfect use of the setting.
Explained it perfectly
Please react to “Room” with Brie Larson and Jacob Tremblay. It’s another movie from a kid’s perspective, so interesting and the camera angles are crazy
This movie was honestly amazing I was NEVER bored watching it even though there wasn’t anything thrilling about it and the concept was so simple
Agreed!! It was so different from what’s usually in the medium of film!
9:36 correct me if I'm wrong, but I was told that the actors actually did go up to real people for this film & after they even had the people sign a filament for the movie.
Edit: 15.13 that rainbow was originally gonna be photoshopped, but then an actual rainbow showed up.
The last scene was filmed with a phone camera. The same filmmaker did the film Tangerine using a phone camera to film the whole movie and It's crazy how nice they made It look.
This movie made me cry two times, and watching the reaction I was tearing up at the end too. Damn that's powerful filmmaking.
"Tangerine" from the same director is also a great one.
Yep, it was entirely filmed on an iPhone 6, so it's a great acomplishment
Yeah, Tangerine is good
I like to think of the final scene of the girls running through the park a dream or her fantasy. If i remember correctly the camera throughout the entire film is steady and clear, while the ending feels like it was shot on a handheld camera and just has that dream-like quality to it. What a lovely film with terrific performances from the entire cast.
It was the most unique of the films I’ve seen on here yet!
A lot of this film was shot on Highway 192, literally just a mile or two from the entrance to Disney World. That ever-present tourism and luxury in the background throughout the whole film serves as a really hard-hitting counterbalance to the lives of the characters.
I don't care for Disney world. People who go there have no idea of the poverty that exists just a few miles from it's gates.
Probably unpopular opinion: Willem Dafoe deserved to win the Oscar over Sam Rockwell (for Three Billboards)
Best movie of that year. Super emotional. Shows the underbelly of life happening right outside the tragic kingdom. You don't see this kind of life portrayed in film very often. Beautiful...and very sad.
Described it perfectly!
seeing this pop up was unexpected, but this is one of my favorite movies and i’m so glad you made a video on it!
Happy I was able to check it too!
Hey! Have you ever watched "Phantom thread"? It's really good
it’s crazy how you’re gaining such a following with these lowkey arthouse movies,, probably the best community of subscribers for any film channel out there. prolly cos your reactions are exactly what we wanna hear
That means a lot Paul!! Thanks!
To me this is a miracle of naturalism. From the childrens' POV, it's all a beautiful fantasy, they can experience the rose-colored motel as cute as it is on the outside without all the heaviness inside. Pairs well with the Safdie brothers' Daddy Longlegs.
Agreed!! It definitely gives off that Uncut gems vibe of naturalism!
@@JamesVSCinema A good idea for your (presumably very long) watchlist would also be Robert Altman, the master of overlapping dialogue. Especially his masterpiece Nashville.
I saw this movie with a friend who has a child and has grandchildren as well as great grandchildren, and she hated it. I loved it for all the reasons you mentioned. Hearing you speak from a filmmaker's perspective is also interesting because I pick up on those things like camera focus sensually but not so consciously. Florida, as well as California have reputations for being some kind of paradise and yet people come to find they're dreams and end up homeless or addicted to drugs or whatever. Harsh realities await the disillusioned.
I think you’ve nailed it! It’s one of the things I truly love about this movie but I can totally see how others may have not liked it!
As a person who was born and raised in Florida im so happy to see that this movie shows the more accurate sides of Florida.
That little girl deserved an Oscar. SPOILER ALERT: That scene at the end where she runs away to her friend's hotel to say goodbye broke me.
I found the juxtaposition between the beauty of the place, the soft sunset hues, and the chaos brought to that beauty by the dysfunctional lives of the humans there, very interesting, kind of hypnotic.
Love this film. Glad you reacted to this. The visuals are so lush and engrossing. The acting is amazing as well. It got super under appreciated during award season IMO, especially from the Oscars.
Dude, this film along with many other great films make great use of anamorphic lenses, especially the Panavision anamorphic lenses, nothing tops those IMO. That's why some shots have that gorgeous barrel distortion around the edges. One of the many great things about anamorphic lenses. Can't wait for you to react to Waves. The visuals are a feat. Keep the great vids coming, man.
Appreciate that Steven!! Yeah those lenses are INSANE!
I know this isn't where you take requests, but if any patreons agree then you should vote for it if it ever comes up.
Manchester by the sea. An extremely beautiful and well shot movie.
What your review of this film showed me is that you are a caring, empathetic individual who understands that great filmmaking can be deeply personal, without explosive special effects or sensational aspects of storytelling like a big twist or shocking reveal. It's obvious that you were pulled into this film by the human beings that populate it. Lives easily overlooked can have the kind of importance that one usually reserves for kings and queens, presidents and generals or mafia bosses and serial killers. Regular folks, even those on the margins, have dignity, however ragged it may be. These simple people mattered to you. What this tells me is that you, my friend, have soul.
I had the pleasure of talking to Sean Baker about this movie. He went into some detail about the casting, camerawork, editing, etc. You might find it an interesting read. drive.google.com/file/d/1PNV1T-EOWgRuJzVU3x-w3mLXXS48SQJo/view?usp=drivesdk
Was not the biggest fan of this film but always good to see a different perspective on it; may have to give it a rewatch.
That’s good you even have that perspective my friend!
I think it's interesting how they chose to color this film as well. It's got such a vibrant feel like the whimsy of childhood but specifically the color purple typically signifies a couple things royalty, pride, nobility and magic. The juxtaposition of the meaning of royalty with the gritty poverty of their circumstance is awesome. But also the magic of blissful childhood ignorance and how seeing the world through that lens almost completely distorts the reality of poverty and makes even the worst situation fun and exciting and adventurous. I think that's the beauty of this film. That's the point. When you're a child, everything seems good... Even destitution.
Also fun fact, the ending sequence of them running through disney world was shot entirely on iphone since they couldn't get permission to actually film inside of disney world, that's why it's so gritty and shakey with he handheld. Plus I love the ending of her just imagining the childish solution to this massively adult problem by just grabbing her best friend's hand and running away to the happiest place on earth and being able to fully escape the consequences of her reality. Her last ditch effort at maintaining her innocence. So heartbreakingly pure.
Agreed and well put India! These colors felt so lush but held a heavy weight to them. They were textured!
@@JamesVSCinema I like that description "heavy and textured" that's a great way to describe it.
11:48 when these condos were open to the public it was a beautiful spot, good food live music 🥲
I bet watching this film takes you back to amazing memories. Keep making new ones. :)
Brooo I kept noticing the helicopter too I thought i was the only one. And I was on edge the whole time like after the middle of the movie bc it just felt like something bad was gonna happen 😂 I love this movie bc you never know what to expect like most movies
Such a great character study. Great movie. Those kids. However the director got them to perform, I don't know, but it's tragic and magical
This was beautifully acted!
Hope you'll do Tangerine as well. It's from the same director.
It is my understanding that the helicopter is real, they couldn't do anything about it so they just used it.
That’s pretty damn cool
I'm so grateful to have seen this before the hurricane came through.. Ironically, it being the Florida Project. So I did my due diligence on the research and found the lead female is Lithuanian and was discovered as an Instagram model. Sean Baker loves a true life documentation. He shot his entire film "tangerine" with three iPhones 5S.
It feels so damn authentic!
I LOVE THIS ANALYSIS!!! Sean Baker is a gem 💎 This film tore me to shreds and simultaneously gave me a melancholic feeling of hope (and other feelings I can’t quite put into words).
I thought it was a slice-of-life shot innocently and beautifully, and from the child's perspective. I think it was done to show the innocence of youth, as well as the inability to comprehend adults as a child, but knowing who you trust by how they act. Willem's character was so honest, patient, and attentive. You trust he would take care of them based on his actions. He protected them as long as he could, but near the end of the film, when there was nothing left he could do, he was mostly out of frame or focus.
I'm from Florida and all of it was accurate. I remember the same Giant Orange market, those gift market stores, and the small ice cream store. I have stayed in those same kinds of motels as well.
The only thing haven't experience is having a cool boss like Willem Dafoe around.
I think you nailed the last comments about the movie. I think it's definitely one of those movies that the more you watch it, the more you can glean from it, and every single character just seems SO alive. The actors were truly a standout, also. I've already seen people commenting on this below, but when you were talking about movies not having to be these crazy blockbuster ideas to be good, and how interesting and refreshing it can be to watch a movie with a kind of minimalist, RAW approach to its story, I really couldn't help but think of Room, which was without a doubt my favorite movie of 2015 by a LONGSHOT. It also features incredible performances by the entire cast but a especially profound performance by Jacob Tremblay who at the time was only 8 years old and who manages to give one of the most poignant portrayals of trauma seen through a child's eyes that I've seen so far. If you liked The Florida Project's choices in storytelling, I would really recommend it! Also, as always, great commentary and reaction :D thank you for keeping the videos coming and creating this lil community for all of us to share our love for cinema
100% on this comment!!
Watch some of Charlie Kaufman’s movies
I was so lucky to get to see both this and Call Me By Your Name at the same film festival back in 2017. It's such a beautiful movie with such wonderful performances.
Loved this film and how it felt!
Grand Budapest Motel
Already did that!
@@JamesVSCinema Oh I know. I just think this looks like the rundown version of that Hotel. Similar color pallets.
Great acting. They just pulled this lady off Instagram with ZERO acting experience! Unbelievable!
I’m usually terrified of Willem Dafoe. But this film brought out his protagonist side. Especially a film this raw and sad.
Brilliant and unique film. Fantastic acting skills exhibited by child actors in particular. A different side of America.
How am I just now finding out you reacted to this?! Some of the best cinematography I’ve seen and what a heartbreaking story to be told with such innocent eyes. Brooklynn Prince absolutely kills this role
As someone from Florida (specifically I'm from Miami), this is way more accurate to real life than whatever movies portray Miami as, or what tourists experience when they hang around South Beach.
that part with them selling perfume in front of the store was absolutely real and 100% improved. i love that you picked up on that! this film is one of my all time favorites every single thing about is amazing. my sister wrote a college paper about this movie😂 truly a masterpiece
I have seen the movie just last week and I wonder how the idea came about. My estimate is that it started with the child actor. It is not difficult to get a child to act out - their personalities are not that settled yet - but to cast someone who can act it out for the audience to understand and to keep her in that way for the story to unfold and through several takes. My guess is that the writer and/or director was personally aquainted to them and with that the possibility for the idea. The location is also a character which I always find fascinating in a movie.
They probably let the cameras run and just told the children to play with each other. I remember them summer days being so bored, nothing to do as a younger child. And we just made something fun out of wherever we were.
Love the authenticity throughout this whole film. Great reaction as usual bro. I highly recommend La Haine. Masterpiece and also feels authentic, with some magical realism mixed in for good measure.
Very soon my brother!
This film is one of the reasons I don't care for Disney. It really shows the seedy side of that area, and the huge contrast between the haves and have nots. Excellent film without pretense.
This movie is a 10/10 until the very end, but still an amazing movie with great child acting and great acting from a completely new actor as the mother and dafoe is just the cherry on top. He has been robbed of supporting actor twice in the past 3 years for this and the lighthouse imo.
This movie, man…. Just…ugh. That ending with her crying to her friend and trying to say goodbye😢
Willem Dadfoe is so good, you have to watch Lighthouse at some point
if you’re looking for more authentic movies check out harmony korine’s gummo or julien donkey boy.
I hope you react to HEREDITARY and MIDSOMMAR next. Both directed by Ari Aster. I'm sure you'll be amazed!
while i never had a young mother or lived in a hotel in florida, i did grow up slightly similar and this movie gave me so much nostalgia like i related so much to moon. also fun fact the ending at disney was filmed on an iphone because they obviously weren't allowed to actually film there lol. also the ending is considered a "fantasy" for moon
Makes sense! This was a damn interesting watch!
Willem Dafoe has really turned it up in the A24 universe.
React to room with Jacob tremblay, pls. It’s also from a kids prospective!
Check out Tangerine/American Honey/Blue Ruin/The Green Room/Kin/Captive State. Note: Tangerine was shot solely on Iphones. If you haven't seen it already check out Escape From Tomorrow and read up why it was such an unusual film
The ending made my cry
What was the point of the helicopter? Do they just do daily aerial checks of the area for stuff?
I loved this movie so much. One of my favorites from A24
There is a theory that when Moonee runs away, the ending we see is just what she had wanted to happen and instead was hit by a car when running away.
Great movie, it’s nothing like that I have really ever seen. Apparently it was shot on an iPhone
Mid90s by Johan Hill
this is great man, you should do a Q&A and react to Boogie Nights or Magnolia next! keep it up!
I will say that one thing I liked about this film is that it was very evocative of films from the seventies about peoples lives without the frill and action sequences. Just people living.
The ending is so terrible for me. So abrupt and inappropriate
If you havent seen it yet can you do a reaction to the movie color out of space? Has nic cage 😂
The color-grading makes it feel so uniqe but also, somehow, sort of like "comforting". If you get what I mean. Also the first few minutes are definitely the best for me. It just feels like you're right at home with them right away.
And again, thanks for all your videos and the work you put in to them! At first I didnt even notice how a lot of the time the faces of the adults cant even be seen due to their height. Thanks for pointing that out :D
Hey if you ever wanna see Florida look as great as this cinematography, check on A24's Waves great direction, performances, editing, story and cinematography all around.
I just saw Waves for the first time last week and already I cannot wait for that to be reacted to on this channel
New subb. Your videos are so relaxingg. I usually use them to fall asleep to but i amm a huge movie buff
It's a beautiful film! ❤
The rundown tourism industry of the 'Florida Project' and the seedy NYC nightclubs of 'Sweet Smell of Success' are some of my favorite movie settings in all of cinema.
These settings were absolutely gorgeous!
@@JamesVSCinema For me, not just gorgeous, but helped to create such a mood and underlying tone of the film. Happily become a pateron member because of this review. Good Stuff!
was staring at my blu-ray of the florida project earlier today. gonna need to rewatch it now.
have a good day.
You too my man!
@@JamesVSCinema also by watching your video i had completely forgotten Macon Blair (Green Room) showed up in this.
You should see "The Innocents"
Dead Mans Shoes🙌🏻🙌🏻
great video! I never fully watched this movie, only saw bits of it towards the end but the visuals look really beautiful. And i got a suggestion for you.. would you maybe consider watching Central Station (Central do Brasil)? it's a wonderful movie and I think you'd like it
I’ll definitely have to look into that one! Hanks for the suggestion Vic!
Yes! I love that film, Fernanda Montenegro is such a great actress, shes amazing in Invisible Life as well.
The very last scene was shot on an iPhone because Disneyland doesn’t allow filming in their parks. I feel like that way of working around their rules is a meta commentary about the exclusion of Disney, a brand for everyone and also the parasitic nature of the local businesses using Disney esque elements without having official licenses
This movie gave me a gut punch. When Moonee went to her friend to tell her goodbye, I literally bawled so hard. It was absolutely heartbreaking. Great young actors here. 👏 😢
I'm from Florida and this movie is insanely accurate to how living in FL with low income is like. Watching a lot of these scenes it feels like I'm watching people I knew and how they used to live, some of the shots of people walking on the street or sidewalk are super reminiscent of when I'm driving and I see people walking irl. 10/10
Nice 🎉
It really is crazy here in Orlando. I have lived here my whole life and these hotels on the outskirts of the parks are really like that. You will see $38. a night. One time me and buddy stayed at one for one night just to do something. I woke up at about 4am and opened the door to to hear this girl keep screaming at this guy "don't touch me when I'm sleeping". Shit was crazy and I felt fleas. Then go across the street to the Grand Floridian hotel Where it's $750. a night :-) We aren't living in a simulation, we are living in a sitcom!
In a similar vein of subject matter--as well as the current shitshow that is the world we live in--I'm going to reiterate the emphasis on watching THE PEOPLE UNDER THE STAIRS. Sure it's a horror movie, but it will surprise you in ways you'll be quite grateful for.
Showing the lifestyle of these people's lives at the motel gives a real juxtaposing portrait of what Florida is made of specifically Orlando when they're right next door to the big money of disneyworld. While people spend big money going to a theme park, right next door people struggle.
No, cause getting taken away was my worst fear as a kid. No clue where i found out about it but seriously, I would specifically not tell my teachers stuff and wouldn’t talk about my home life just because my dad was a bartender at the time.
Yeah the Florida Project i believe refers to Disney... The Happiest Place in the World. And all the sadness that surrounds it.
The Florida Project was the name of Disney World before it was named Walt Disney World. The hotel used is in Kissimmee, which isn't far from Disney. A lot of people live in hotels in the area, so much so that they've taken hotels not in use an lease them as apartments
If you really like overlapping dialogue, you should check out films directed by Robert Altman. He's the guy that basically invented that style for main stream cinema. He's made great films like The Player, MASH, Short Cuts, McCabe and Mrs. Miller, and Nashville (the 1975 film, not the TV show).
PLEASE check out (and react!) to Tangerine. Same director and such a unique film. And fun fact, it was filmed on an iPhone. They still had professional lighting and etc. but yeah, an iPhone.
