Y'all know this is just my opinion, right?
Flaming Lips Tier List
pink floyd first! (although I secretly want a steely dan tier list so much)
way overdue
animal collective tier list would be endless
I read that as “Flaming Lips Tier Lips”, which is probably a good idea for the title
@@willfulton9276 Pink floyd deserves a worst to best.
I listened to the flaming lips so hard in high school...to see you put on a yellow flannel for a contemporary flaming lips record literally made me yell obscenities.
What's your favorite Flaming lips album?
@@nunusknees2928 clouds taste metallic
God I fucking love Kim's watermelon gun so much
@@emilepadilla2825 I'm more of a Transmission from the Satellite Heart lover myself, but Clouds Taste Metallic is amazing. I wanna go to Brainville.
God it makes me so happy to see The Flaming Lips still killing it
I honestly got a kick out of The Terror and King's Mouth but yeah. They put out one truly incredible record every ten or eleven years (Soft Bulletin, Embryonic....) so it's nice to hear they've still got at least one solid one left.
After their Miley collaboration, they deserve a strong 8 from melon..
nick Totally, Two Blobs Fucking is dope, but with the Lips, as with Sufjan Stevens, it's sometimes difficult to discern which projects to consider 'albums' proper. The Terror is underrated as hell as a result of all their side projects I think.
Their studio stuff has been pretty hit or miss for me the last few albums, but I saw them when they toured with Lennon Claypool Delirium last summer and they still sound just as awesome.
Probably the most boring music experience I've ever put myself through
If Miley was on it she would've contributed a strong 1 to the score
I loved their collab, no shame. Best Miley's ever done.
She gets way too much hate all things considered.
@@greatheightsu IMO their personalities sort of go well together...
@@greatheightsu totally agree. Love Dead Petz. Only Miley stuff I like.
so, she would have bumped it up to a 9?
I got to open up for the Flaming Lips in 1987 along with Scratch Acid (thanks Dave) I was horrible, Flaming Lips were great back when they were a trio and everything and everybody was painted tie-dyed. Scratch Acid ruled the show!!!
@WarAgainstBabylon I agree though Jesus lizard were pretty fun live
Wow, that's, that's a hell of a show...
The strokes and the flaming lips getting critical acclaim for their albums? What year is this?
everytime i see the yellow flannel i think it’s gonna be a 10
It's always an 8
Jack Sampson fr. and every time it’s a nine i swear it feels like he’s edging us like just give another ten
@@spookygeorge1969 Before he ends up giving it to an album everyone hates
TotalAtrocity I agree with all his tens except the money store but that’s just me
Me too, lol
I'm glad you brought up Embryonic, I still listen to that album on a constant basis, love the chaotic freak out/approaching burn out sound.
Me too. After Yoshimi they do regular jobs, but Embryonic is iconic.
Huh, considering how much he hated the singles going into this album, I'm really surprised at this outcome.
Just starting the review but from my own listen I think a lot of context is added to songs with the full album experience, such as My Religion Is You punching a lot harder as an ending note of "Through all this death and sorrow, my faith continues through the people I care about" instead of being a seemingly corny love song about not needing religion
Same
He didn’t like the ‘Year of The Snitch’ singles but he gave that a 9
@@OhMystii I was surprised at that result too, especially since I hated every single from that album and it made more sense in the context of the album for me as well
Weekly track roundups have always struck me as gut reactions to initial listens of singles. I'm not saying this is what you're doing but it's always funny seeing people assert that melon is a "hypocrite" for changing his mind on songs when it comes to the actual reviews.
I think it's the best since The Terror, which I know wasn't necessarily a defining album for them but for me was genuinely one of my favorite albums of the 2010s as I dug how it just sounded like an elongated anxiety attack. American Head feels like a retreat back to a sort of Soft Bulletin form but hey, they can still pull that whole thing off it seems.
Agreed!
I personally love The Terror. It's one of few Flaming Lips albums where I just let it play the whole way through.
i love the terror! so underrated
Soft Bulletin for classics? :)
it has to be on the next classic week
Never really listened to this band but I've heard the name over and over so I guess I'll give this a listen.
Others will recommend The Soft Bulletin as well, my favourite of the three I’ve listened to is Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots
@@hrovat97 cool. thanks for the recommendation
@@jojodoom7303 second that recommendation totally awesome album.
100% listen to Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots
The band never clicked for me till I saw them live. I saw them on their tour last year for Claypool Lennon Delirium opening and left a Flaming Lips fanatic. Somehow Yoshimi and The Soft Bulletin just clicked easier for me after seeing them live.
had to check if it's a 10
I got excited
Technically a 9
@@nickmgic7478 but still an 8
Still waiting for that 2020 TEN
Nickmgic this was probably a 9 for me. The only song that I didn’t love was assassin youth but the rest of the songs were so damn beautiful.
It’s always nice to go the comment section early before it turns into a living hell
I like these comments discussing the album rather than just making melon memes
Glad this isn't one of those albums from The Flaming Lips that just get lost in their huge discography
A much needed effortless effort from the Lips, an instant classic that calls back to the soft bulletin era without sounding redundant and creatively safe. It’s a natural, bittersweet, satisfying album. Love them boys
I'm obsessed with American Head. I can't stop listening to it. It is haunting me. I've all but decided that it is my favorite album, ever, period. Which is saying something because The Soft Bulletin has been the soundtrack of my soul for so long. I've seen the Lips live at least 30 times over the past 20 years and cannot wait to see American Head tracks performed live- it's gonna be so amazing. I have tickets to 2 of their 3 shows in January and would not be sad if they just played nothing but American Head start to finish
Did you get to go to your rescheduled show? I bought tickets for the American Head tour in January 2020 and finally got to see it this past weekend. It was such a nice bookend to the nightmare of the pandemic. I hope you got to go or are going soon and it’s as poignant and satisfying for you as it was for me. ❤
@@jelly_ellipsis Hi Jelly! Glad you finally got to see them 😃 The new A.H. songs are amazing live, aren't they? To answer your question: since I wrote the above comment, I've been lucky enough to see them a handful of times, in Utah, Orange County, Arkansas, and even got to attend one of the famous Space Bubble shows in OKC last year. And I'm getting ready to see them twice in SF this coming weekend and then again here in my hometown of L.A. next week. I've seen them a lot but it's never enough- Lips' shows are my happy place. Hope to see you at one someday!
review The Soft Bulletin
Deserves a classics week. No doubt.
what an amazing album
A review weighs a ton

@@charlesschwaboverhere5582 It keeps Buggin' me that he hasn't done it yet
Very concise and studious review Anthony. And admitting that you would have given the album a 10 if they had titled it “Ameloncan Head” was a refreshing moment of honesty from you.
The Soft Bulletin Is A Desert Island Disc ! Wayne Rules 😎
Wayne is fine, but Steven is Beethoven
The description says 8 but the review says 9. I don't know how much I'm supposed to like this album plz help.
Legitimately though, I'm stoked to see them come back to form. The Lips have become one of my favorite groups but the lack of quality this past decade is undeniable. This feels like they're onto something great
The review said a "strong 8 to a light 9", which means somewhere between 8.5 and 9.5
@@chunkyMunky329 A 9.5 would be a decent 9, surely a light 9 would end at 9.3
Gosh, I was eagerly awaiting a review for this one and I'm glad you enjoyed it, too! Strong album for sure!
Thanks for the review. i find myself enjoying it more and more. It's no Soft Bulletin but I wasn't expecting that
Glad to see you enjoyed this record, this is one of my fav Flaming Lips records in quite a while
I was very impressed by the creativity of this album especially at this stage of their career
I’ve never cried at a show except for the time I saw the Flaming Lips. It was probably the lsd, no flex
I got incredibly lucky back in I think 1996, and caught one of the Lips' car stereo/boombox concerts in a KMart parking lot. To this day it is the most powerful live concert I've ever been to. Just this completely bizarre, unexpected thing that turned into this amazing communal outpouring of love. I've never felt more hopeful about humanity than I did that day, I don't think. I've also never seen the Lips live again, even though they've been one of my favourite bands since around Transmissions from the Satellite Heart. I don't think any other performance could live up to that magic afternoon, and so I've just never gone to see them.
Have you told your mother?
@@juliangonzalez2953 hell yeah, she was chill with it
I have a feeling this year we’re getting a 10. We haven’t had one in 2 years and 2020’s music is just getting better and better. I’m feeling it.
If kanye drops and it’s as good as it looks like it’s gonna be, maybe that.
Or the new gorillaz if every song is as good as the singles
I think the new gorillaz has the most chance to be a 10
Sufjan possibility but I can’t think of any other
@@martijnstynen1933 no chance
A 10 is something he considers groundbreaking in some way. Although good, song machine is not really that different from their older stuff
God bless you thank you I have waited to see this day since I first watched a needledrop video 6 years ago.
Hell yes this album is so dope. King’s Mouth was pretty underrated though imo.
I agree. All for the Life of the City is a classic song. There were some low points on that record, though, admittedly.
lizzy rosario I don’t think he’s clueless. He praises King Gizzard. I think he was maybe on a wave of Flaming Lips dislike at the time or something. Even as a hardcore fan Id give Kings Mouth a 5 or 6. American Head is legitimately good.
@lizzy rosario I do agree that his consistency is lacking in a lot of things, which is why I don't really like him as a critic, nor do I like the fans of his that take everything he says as gospel. I mostly watch if he makes a video of a band I like or if he is ripping apart a bad album. Definitely don't go to him for my music advice
This album is emotionally devastating. It reminds me, every time, of lost friends...friends lost to death, friends lost to time and distance. It makes me feel...sad...melancholic...intensely lonely. And I keep coming back.
Glad to see you enjoyed this one
I agree the last few were totally hit or miss and were at points a chore to get through
Still doesnt measure up to the terror (my personal favorite lips album). The emotion and the abrasive sound they accomplished on that record is something that still has yet to be met
This is their best album since Embryonic. It was genuinely surprising.
Agreed. I liked The Flaming Lips and Heady Fwends a lot but I guess that wasn't a proper Flaming Lips album.
Personally I think The Terror was a great album. So i'd say its their best since that, but yeah I wasn't sure they had another great album in them
People don't give 'The King's Mouth' as much love as I think it deserves. It's a beautiful album from start to finish.
The Terror was their best album since Embryonic
Really excited to hear your thoughts on the new osees record
I'm so happy, was totally expecting them to get another 6, even tho I've adored all their recent albums but I get it.
Best Flaming Lips album since “Yoshimi.” Hands down.
Agreed. Gotta say that 2015s Peace Sword was also amazing so don't over look that one
Nah, Embryonic is definitely up there if a little too long. Best since Embryonic for sure though
you're forgetting embryonic, masterpiece for sure
@@colete888 yoshimi and American head are better
So good to see this after losing track of your reviews, the flanno, cameo by Cal, the fact its the Lips getting an Anthony thumbs up. Reasons to be Cheerful, part 3.

ALBUMS FANTANO SHOULD DO FOR CLASSICS WEEK:
The strokes- is this it
Spiritualized- ladies and gentlemen, we are floating in space
Sweet trip- velocity:design:comfort
Interpol- turn on the bright lights
The flaming lips- the soft bulletin
Day 9 of asking Melon to review Big Time Rush’s debut album “BTR”
Elevate is better
I was cautiously optimistic that the Lips were coming out of the haze and finding what made them so great again after last year's King's Mouth. After listening to American Head, I was so happy to hear such a heart wrenching collection of tracks. Sure it doesn't sound as fresh as something like Yoshimi did at the time it came out, but I was blown away by American Head's raw and personal lyrics in a way that I don't think I have ever been on a Lips' project. Wayne's more contemplative moments were always big questions, but these songs feel way more personal yet still eminently relatable.
I think there are some cynical takes of this album by longtime fans of the Lips, but this fan is happy to hear the Lips doing what made me fall in love with them all those years ago, albeit a bit differently. I still think the Flaming Lips' 90s output is the greatest, but I'm happy to still be on this trip with them.
First time in Berlin as a teenager was listening to Yoshimi all day long. Almost forgot about this band.. ty for the reminiscence Anthony
The soft bulletin is one of the best albums of all time prove me wrong
yoshimi is better

Every video with Anthony wearing a yellow flannel:
1. Immedently click on it
2. Go to the description to see if its a 10
3. See that its not a 10 and click off the video
Retention time on these yellow flannel videos is either really good, or really shit for people who drop in to read the description and dip.

You forgot:
4. Write a comment about how I just read the description and dip on yellow flannel vids even though I obviously don't do that since I'm here writing this comment
Wow!!!! Anthony! first time ever we are on the same page! Love the new Flaming Lips!
I always loved Embryonic. They had so much energy on that album
Really liking the color matching he’s been doing lately. Looks like he’s committing to it.
Anthony, do you think The Soft Bulletin is one of the greatest albums of all time? Top 10 of the 90s?
Very well spoken Anthony! You are one of the best.
Anthony are you planning to check out the new Galimatias album? He produced a song off of Revenger of the Dreamers III, and you said you loved the bouncy sensual percussion. He has more of that throughout several tracks on the new album, mixed with moments of swelling string sections, Italian spoken word, a piano instrumental, and even an immersive scene-setting foley recording. I can not recommend it enough. It’s an experimental RnB masterpiece, in my opinion.
Can’t wait to pick up the record and listen to it while i have a beer and cry
Huh. I don’t know if it’s because of the band or because I just came to these video early but the comment section it’s really nice. Not overused memes, just genuine expressions of love for The Flaming Lips and Anthony. This is nice.
I am curious about what you think about the rock band Liliac. Imagine the Partridge Family but only as bad ass rockers. I think that the band members are really talented to be so young. I think the oldest member may be 22 and the youngest only 12. Would love to know what you think.
This is a story I like to tell, but am almost never around people who know who The Flaming Lips are to tell it, essentially I met Wayne Coyne and didn’t even know it until a few years ago, the bassist Michael was the uncle to a friend of mine in grade school, she’d come over every Friday and we’d play Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy, I knew he was the bassist of the band but never knew much about the band itself. I went to their house one day and was playing with imaginext and LEGO’s which she had an insane amount of and I was jealous of, Michael had a friend over and I saw him but never knew it was Wayne until I started listening to them and they became one of my favorite bands, my parents were even friends with Michael and his wife at the time Katherine and it’s just insane looking back and knowing I had a connection with one of my all time favorite bands, and my dad even has a similar story with Radiohead from the 90s and they’re my all time favorite band so I envy him😂
The Flaming Lips have really been making some great music with their last album and then this.
They've never stopped making great music since the 80's.
I’ll definitely have to give this a listen. I’m a hardcore Flaming Lips fan but I was honestly very disappointed by the singles, and felt largely underwhelmed by King’s Mouth, so I’m hoping that the full American Head record brings me around
Flaming lips are one of the few bands that change and expand as they get older and wiser...

Fantastic album and their best in a very long time but like David Bowie's The Next Day, I can't help but feel they dropped the best track first (Where are we Now? and Flowers of Neptune 6)
