- If you have X-Drive ; how to change the differential fluid in the front differential. BMW lifetime oil doesn't mean lifetime. Needs to be done about every 100 thousand kms or 60 to 70 thousand miles.
You will need:
1. A phillips screwdriver for the front underbody cover
2. 8mm socket for the rear underbody cover
3. 16mm socket for the aluminium skid plate
4. 14mm hex for the fill and drain plugs
5. Fully synthetic gear oil. 1 litre or just over a quart
6. An oil hand pump
7. Level safely raised up BMW
8. Some free time, but not too much cause this is easy. - Авто та транспорт
The note about the front reinforcement plate bolts at 7:30 is very interesting. I've got replacement bolts in anticipation of needing to remove in for some future job, I'll need to mull over whether to actually use them.
Thanks for the video, very helpful. Also, pretty cool to learn Louis CK works on his own car : )
Cup holder!!!! Yes. You saved me at least 4 quarts of diff fluid worth of paper towel clean up. :)
Appreciate the vid! I came in from the side wheelwell, since I had the guard off already from nightmare CV axle issues.
Haha, i do the same, torque to what you know is enough, just adjust according to size of bolt 😁
Ive just done the oil change on both front and rear diffs of my X5. Those bolts on the X5 undershield are also securing the antiroll bar bushes, and a pain to get your hand to the inside to put on the nut !!!
Appreciate all your time and elbow grease!
Thank you!
I feel you do know what you're doing. ✌️Those plate brace bolts are dumb. They're torque to yield but they barely have to be providing any structural rigidity.
Those bolts are silly.
how to say breath out torque in german? goottantightt!
why is your car upsidedown :D
I thought front diff fill was different from the rear. on the front your only supposed to put in 600ml, whereas on the rear you fill till it trickles out the filler plug, am I missing something? thanks for the vid
As I understood it you fill both front and rear until they trickle.
I filled up from the top using funnel on f10. but getting access to fill plug was pain in the rear end..
How are the F10s for DIY?
@@IDontKnowWhatImDoingDIY fairly easy. maybe parts a bit pricey but that's all
So, on refill, my e61 only took about 3/4 liter. I went till I had a steady stream out the fill plug. I'm guessing that was enough?
But the rear took a full liter....
Unless you're parked on an angle you're gold. Job well done.
@@IDontKnowWhatImDoingDIY also wanted to tell you about a common failure point that is easy to change. The Micky mouse flange on the front of the block that has the coolant return. It's plastic and when fails, causes all the coolant to dump onto the serpentine belt possibly causing it to come off and then get sucked in the front main bearing, clogging the oil sump and causing catastrophic failure of the engine. Cheap $20 part.
We love the videos, please keep them coming for us e61 owner's.
So I’ll need to buy 3 bottles of 1qt Liqui Moly’s 75W-90 right? Two for the diff’s and one for the transfer case? Your video is highly appreciated man
No! Do not put gear oil in the transfer case. It gets special BMW transfer case juice at $100 per bottle. It has clutches and and things in there so you don't want to mess with it. My car got totaled before I could make the transfercase video.
Here's the transfercase stuff. Also there's a special way of refilling the transfercase through the drain plug since the fill plug is really hard to get to. Google it. www.ecstuning.com/b-genuine-bmw-parts/xdrive-transfer-case-service-kit/83220397244~kt1/?gclid=CjwKCAjwlqOXBhBqEiwA-hhitJT1NJpaQK-6H80HVtK4dDRXSiIUu3LMIcC8j5PaOSlh1m-ShZRBiRoCryIQAvD_BwE
@@IDontKnowWhatImDoingDIY Alright then didn’t know that, thanks for the heads up
By transfer case you mean transmission don’t you? The front diff and rear diff require 75-90 oil
@joecastro23 he means transfer case, it's next to the transmission on xdrive cars. So there's 4 things: front and rear differential, xdrive transfer case, and transmission.
wheres your eye protection bro? lol
