It´s a film from Spain, in Hollywood they didn´t want to give money for this project because it was spoken in Spanish, until Netflix gave it its support, it took 10 years to make the project a reality, and it is clear that this film from Spain is a thousand times better than those of Hollywood, Spain has done it very well and transmits so much emotion and reality that it will win the Oscar for best foreign film

Society of the Snow is the first accurate film about the 1972 plane crash ("Alive" erased vital people from the story and changed the facts). It tells everyone's real names and stories and has a fully Uruguayan-Argentinian cast. The survivors and families of the deceased were consulted throughout the filming (and some of them make cameos in the movie). It was filmed in the real locations in Uruguay and the Andes. It is an extraordinary film and a respectful tribute.
Moreover, this film's protagonist is Numa Turcatti (who wasn't featured on Alive). So the two movies are very different.
(The survivors call Alive "the Disney version" of their story as it has a lot of inaccuracies.)

I'm from Poland, I knew about this story for years, read articles, watched a few documentaries, and watched the 1993 version but it's nothing compared to this masterpiece! Absolutely amazing film! One of the best survival movies ever made. The acting, the screenplay, the cinematography, the music, the special effects - all top quality.
One of the most beautiful words ever, it's exactly the line Roberto said (I remembered it from the documentary) that the bodies of their dead friends and loved ones, which they ate, were 'like the Eucharist, like the body of Christ, and gave them salvation - life'; and the second line from the movie that 'There is no greater love than to give one's life for friends'. Heartbreaking, but utterly beautiful and brilliant words! I totally agree!
If I were in a similar situation, I would also allow/give permission to my friends and loved ones to eat my body if it would save their lives. The body is only a packaging, what counts is what is inside, which this film also showed brilliantly - the spirit of altruism and love! And it is not talked about enough that our species has survived so many centuries thanks to mutual love and altruism, thanks to common faith and willpower to not give up even in the worst circumstances!
I also think that those who died in this tragedy, and were eaten, are still living - physically and spiritually - in the survivors! They gave up their lives and their bodies, so the others could fight and live!
The ending made me cry like a baby! It was so emotional, so touching and raw. This story is one of the most incredible survival stories of all time!! The movie needs to win an Oscar or we riot!

We spoke and he was so humble he actually said to me that he’s been through so much nothing fazes him anymore and he just appreciates life. He actually tried to rent out his house in Carrasco to us. Also got to meet Carlos Paez in Punta Del Este and he was also awesome to talk to and you could see how much love he has for his son Carlitos whom he never gave up on! I hope this film gets the accolades it deserves because honestly if I’ve learned one thing from it, it’s that the human spirit will always come in clutch when you need it the most! So I’ve just gone down a rabbit hole. “Adeline” was inspired by a melody on Hans Zimmer’s soundtrack for “The Thin Red Line”. And Hans Zimmers’s melody in “Journey to the Line” on that soundtrack seems to echo a Melanesian song called “God, yu tekem laef blong mi”. I’m not 100% on the origin of the latter (some pages suggest it was composed by Zimmer, others say it’s a Melanesian song which in turn is based on a Christian hymn). Also, Although the script for Alive was written by John Patrick Shanley in collaboration with Frank Marshall and producer Kathleen Kennedy, the monologues read by Malkovich were not written by any of them. This new film shows what 'Alive' failed to convey by fictionalising the story. While in 'Alive', the one and only hero is 'Nando' ('Roberto' as his sidekick) and all the surviving passengers depend entirely on his initiative to escape from the mountains, the true story is about teamwork at its best. The survivors say they had to build a new society, the 'Society of the Snow', in which, all of them had a crucial role in their struggle for survival.
'Tintín' says in the book 'Society of the Snow' (and also in his conferences) 'We can't say there was only one, two or three heroes. In the Andes, each one of us gave a hundred percent to help the others, we all saved each other's lives.'
The film 'Society of the Snow' was made to pay tribute to all the heroes in the ordeal, including those who couldn't return to their families.

I wished they told the story through multiple POVs, like Nando coming to terms with his choice inviting his mother and sister, Roberto and his girlfriend's love story (like how he wore the sweater she made for him even in his venture out), Carlitos being the spoiled kid who never lifted a finger to being the one who sewed the sleeping bag that saved Nando and Roberto. Numa was an admirable person based on the survivors' accounts but it would've been great to know each survivor equally.

Alive is based on a book written by an English author that didn't interview the survivors (they were dissapointed at it, and even more dissapointed at the film), "Society of the Snow" is based on the book of Pablo Vierci, an Uruguayan author who worked with all 16 survivors to write it, on top of that the survivors were also involved greatly in this film, and all families and survivors were interviewed for even more details and in some cases a lot of the words said are exactly the same as what happened, the fact that in this film it's actual "Rioplatense" spanish speaking actors helps even more to transmit the words.
Like the survivors say, "Alive" is "the disney version" of what really happened, this one is far more realistic and brutal.

I saw this at a festival. The movie is greater and VERY different from "Alive", it has a different protagonist, a different POV of the story, and it's a far more accurate adaptation of the accident (the survivors say this too). It was filmed chronologically, with Uruguayan and Argentine actors, who lost up to 20 kg of weight during filming. The main actor -Enzo Vogrincic- is outstanding. Bayona interviewed the survivors and the families of the deceased in order to replicate every true detail of the story with upmost respect.

At the time the Survivors made the media rounds praising Alive and saying how great it was. I remember seeing interviews.
The filmmakers of Alive took some of the survivors back to the site of the crash and one of them was quoted as saying when they watched the film, they said “How did we survive that?”
So it’s not that the movie Alive was bad. In fact it was pretty groundbreaking for its time and was very emotional.
But filmmaking and artistry has advanced and audiences have matured. We as a society are willing to watch more accurate representations of harrowing conditions, both physical and mental.
I imagine this movie will probably be better and more accurate given where we are as a society and what the filmmakers did to capture the realism. But I do think it’s unfair to criticize the first film which at the time was thought to be pretty amazing.

    • @Adifgreat
      @Adifgreat 8 місяців тому +22

Actually, the only thing the survivors like about 'Alive' is the special/visual effects. What they've said for the last 30 years is that it is a fictionalised version of the real facts, a big budget Hollywood movie that fails to convey what they really went through, a very superficial portrayal with scenes that never happened in real life and disrespectfully depicted characters, such as the mechanic, whose son grew up wondering why his father was portrayed that way (in the book 'Society of the Snow', he's remembered as the loving father who cried on Canessa's shoulder saying that he'd give his life to see his 6-month-old baby again).
For the people, mostly Spanish speakers, who know the story in depth from the books and the interviews with the actual protagonists, 'Alive' is a film that focuses on a single character (with actions by others attributed to him), on whose initiative the whole group depend, and does not show the crucial role and the heroic actions of each of the survivors and those who couldn't make it out of the mountains. The true story is about teamwork at its best.

The thing with alive is that it's missing a lot of representation of the real culture. First of all, since when do these survivors speak in english? This movie is made by uruguayan-argentinian actors. Second, there is a scene where they literally refer to mate (traditional drink of uruguay) as tea. For this movie they even used uruguayan slang.
Alive is also missing the story of the people who didn't make it, and they even made up names, do you know how offensive that must have been to the families? For this one, each actor went and spent time with the family of each survivor/dead member of this flight, to get to know them and represent them in the best possible way.
If you ask me, yes, I do think alive must have been groundbreaking because of the special effects, but I think the story was told in the worst possible way. It was made like a disney movie rather than a very true, cruel and bittersweet story.
