Great video. I watched all of your videos but this was the best. I went on a solo trip to the mountains last year with my truck but I just recently bought an 08 Jeep unlimited Rubicon to turn into my dedicated adventure rig. I am building it very similar to how you have your Land Cruiser. Overlanding is my new passion and means of relaxation. Hope you post more videos soon
Good looking truck and good summary of the upgrades. Love a purpose built truck and like what you said about the custom pin-striping! Look forward to more videos.
Great video. On your website, you implied on the Joshua Trip, that you sleep in the vehicle. Can you show us your sleeping platform/configuration. Thanks
Yep! I'll get to this thought I'll tell you, its pretty simple. We usually put down our mats in the back with a sleeping bag. That's it. The insulation of the truck makes a big difference in cold weather!
3:30 personally I agree with the sentiment of what you are saying, however it depends on where you are traveling. Anywhere with, snow, ice, sand or wet tarmac/gravel and you will be better with ATs (KO2s imo). KMs are only best in instances where you are frequently traveling through heavy 'sticky' mud. Personally for me, living in western Europe and overlanding to Eastern Europe and North Africa, I feel KO2s blow any mud tyre out of the water, also rate General Grabbers highly.
I was about to buy a stock Land Cruiser like this this time last year, but I needed a commuter for school -_- so I settled in between for a Legacy Outback...still want one though.
Love your setup and rig. Experience shows in your attention to detail. Could you consider an update or tools to take on an overland journey like yours?
+Gary G It's a good idea! In the meantime, check out this article on our site. It's not exactly what you are asking for - tools and gear that are vehicle related, but covers kit to bring. Your video helped me make a decision, I was thinking whether to buy the plastic gasoline tanks, they look great in the rack, but I had the feeling that they are very small and more when you think of a Tundra, so you are buying at least one of those. Ask how long do you recommend saving gas in those tanks ?. That if I would not put gasoline together with water, nothing confirmed, but I have the feeling that the gases in the gasoline could contaminate the water. Maybe I do not have any relationship but I have that feeling. Thank you.
I like that build, the only thing I hate is the overkill on the lighting. If you want good lighting do your research, get the best for your use and you won't have all that mess.
Great video. I love me some 80 series landcruisers. So whats your biggest reason or reasons for going with a landcrusier vs say a toyota tacoma 4x4 crew cab pickup truck with a camper? Im on the fence on which to pick but those are my top 2 choices for overland adventuring. Any tips?
Hey mixflip - I really wanted the factory lockers and the seating capacity. Also, I did quite a bit of research on true cost of ownership using Edmunds. After all the research, for me, the FZJ80 stood out as the way to go. I admit to having a soft spot for Jeeps too ;)
The Tacomas and 4Runners are great. I owned two Tacomas, a 2001 and a 2005, and both were great trucks. I now own a Land Cruiser. From experience with both, I can say that some big advantages of the Cruisers are interior space, and a much stronger drive train. The components are stout. 9.5" ring gears and nice fat axles will stand up to a lot of abuse. Anything can break, but they are strong. The Tacomas are a bit lighter, so they put a little less stress on those axles, but any solid front axle Toyota will take a pretty good beating. The offroad performance of a Cruiser right out of the box is pretty tough to beat though. Please, don't thank me for confusing you even more... :-D
Ha ha! That's great JunkfoodZombie ! Ya I took a tocoma through Baja a couple times and the light weight was great in the sand. I do prefer my FZJ80 though. Will get me anywhere!
Overland Bound You know it. I just spent the day at Windrock in East Tennessee, where I live. Did some good trails. I was in my FJ62 and had a couple friends in a 4Runner and a Jeep TJ.
