My OCD makes my brain hurt, just thinking that my Lego would be stored like this!! I’m definitely sticking to little drawers with parts stored by type.
As a lego enthusiast I dont have enough spare lego to make it worth my time but as a software developer I'm glad to see someone finally put AI to good use 😂
the number of usecases that are covered by the app seem very small to me. it mainly adresses the following situation: i need one particular part, where is it? if you need multiples of a part, then you would likely need to open one bag for each part. this almost immediately disqualifies it for even a semi serious bricklink store as well as for semi serious builders.
This has so much potential. I will test it. If you like your parts sorted in drawers, look at this as a pre sort solution. You catalogue in bags, you see all the sets you could build, you build the wanted set and when disassembling it, you sort the parts properly. At least for me, this sounds like more fun. In addition, you could add your draws to the database as well. And imagine, you have all the bigger parts sorted but a bunch of small parts and just using this app for them. One trick for the bags, just put a clothes pin onto it like a register, so you'll see the number on top and not have to get the whole bag out of the box to see the number.
This is a game changer. I've only recently learned what many of the pieces I have are even called. I was thinking of making inventory of it all but the task looked monumental.
You're right it's a tricky task. Currently we recognize very rough color palette (that was explicit product design decision), but we know how to improve that and recognize more colors if there will be a demand for that.
This is a color-calibration problem; it's not rocket science. There are all sorts of ways to solve it and if done correctly the computer will be better at it than people are.
@@nw62 It is in part a color calibration problem, but one that I would not underestimate. I would argue that also humans are not able to determine the correct color from a photo. Many Lego colors can only be distinguished by rotating a given piece and observing the light reflections (see e.g. metallic, chrome or transparent colors). After all, there are about 200 different Lego colors (see bricklink). Just a few days ago I struggled distinguishing dark bluish gray and flat silver 1 x 2 grille pieces until I held them at a particular angle against a light source. In my opinion, creating a system that can determine Lego colors reliably would require at a minimum a light tunnel with constant light conditions and a mechanism to allow imaging of a piece from different directions, either by using multiple cameras or a vibration system that would change the orientation of a given piece. I don't see a way this can be achieved by an image recognition app that uses a single image as input.
I think in some ways all the hyper sorting of parts limits creativity. So keeping a bin of random bits (think serious play window bags, etc.) actually is helpful for creativity. So where the majority of a collection might be all organized, having a bin of randomness to just PLAY with Lego is also important. This type of catalogue would help “know” what's in the “random stuff” part of the collection. So say I'm making a mockup with odd colors from my random bits collection… that activity is creative, and figuring out what works and creates the forms I'm looking for. Once I have that worked out from the bits & bobs, I can go seek out the specific colors I want from the sorted bits. 2 different brain activities. When inspired, it's hard to keep switching tasks back & forth to logical/organized brain and back again. Spend time creating, then rebuild it with the exact parts/colors wanted for the finished build. Many people end up using software to do the first mockup because similar reasons…they have an idea, the software puts all the shapes kinda at their fingertips. But the bin of misc parts is a different creativity exercise, much more spacial and opportunistic creativity.
This sounds really cool and I think its perfect for those without the space for a large storage system. But I think theres a real beauty in a huge set of well sorted drawers, and I'm sure a good chunk of lego hobbyists love the work that goes into it.
I dont like to manually enter all bricks so it would help a lot but I need those features: - recognize correct lego color (not general color but the brickling catalog one) - define custom containers with names Im adding current photo to - that export for sure Then it would be the best :)
This is incredible. Thanks for sharing. It’s a game changer. I have kits from my childhood just dumped into tins but using this I can scan them and see what I can resurrect with brinklink/brickowl, which otherwise would take ten times as long to the point I’ve never bothered!
@blockpartyuk you've done it again, dude! 😂 one of your livestreams inspired me to buy a Rebrickable mat, and now you've introduced me to this, it could be a game-changer! So many ideas buzzing around my head now. You've opened up a massive can of worms here, buddy! 😂🤛👍🤘
This is a really great system. The only problem is that, especially for bigger and custom builds, you have to manually remove each piece you use from your digital collection which takes a ton of time so I don’t think it would be worth it for that reason.
Agreed, it will work for the unsorted bin with 'leftover' pieces, but it can never replace a sorted (large) collection. The way to sort Lego is also very dependent to context: small sets don't need to be sorted (this app can confirm all pieces are there!), larger sets can get away with primitive sorting (color, piece size, etc.) and non-set related needs proper organization.
That’s really helpful! I think I’d still go ahead and separate my pieces, to make it easier to keep track of which ones are still available. Otherwise you have to go back into the app and mark each one as being used.
I have probably 100-150 lbs of unsorted bulk lego and this may just be the ticket. Although, part of me feels that the time spent doing handfuls at a time, taking the picture, validating the scans etc. might still make it time consuming enough to make actually sorting them not much worse. will be interesting to test it at some point. Are you able to add new scans to existing bags?
Thanks for this i knew it was only a matter of time before someone made an AI for lego collactions... Which before I just used Samasung AI on my Galaxey S23/24 ultra smart phones to just scan random sets and prices in my collection to get what they are and see them on bricklink... Which I was going to do what this app does eith Samsung AI but it would have been a hasle... Also I would think your collection needs to be in the shot and clearly visible to the AI so pretty much spread out in aa losse single layer on a table/floor ideally with a background that makes the pieces stick out... Also you would need a good enough photo which if your phone still gets updates it should be fine... Also in theory you could use any photo so if you see someone using a piice you don't know the name of pr if you watch a MOC instructions video that does nothave a bricklink olist this should be perfect for that!
This looks pretty useful to be honest, it would be next level if it could tell what is real lego vs fake Lego for those unsorted used hauls. How does it categories prints?
Hello! has anyone tried this for minifig pieces? Would be awesome to get some help knowing the needed legs are available in the collection etc, etc. Thanks.
I think this is a very cool app, which I doubt I will ever use for two reasons. One, for a large collection, we're talking about hundreds of little baggies with 100-200 pieces each. Which poses storage and retrieval issues once you reach such large bag numbers. Two, dependency issues. As in once I were to set up my LEGO into baggies of randomly (not) sorted bricks, I would then be completely unable to find any specific brick without the use of the app. This degree of app dependency is not desirable.
who said to use bags? wonder what happens if stuff is already sorted... it would count it...? also nice if you can make pics and consolidate them. i mean the only restriction can only be to dectect x on a pic.
@@sektionneun3199 Actually the creator of the video specifically mentioned and displayed the use of bags, referring to it as the expected method of storage when using this app. None the less, bags, boxes, the freshly cleaned skulls of your enemies - the form of the container itself is not the issue, nor the basis of my disdain for using the app. You're dodging the entire reason for my objection and focusing on a minor detail of my comment to nitpick on. If you have an actual relevant point to make, please do so. Otherwise, I encourage you to follow your preference as I will mine.
So what happens when you realize a piece wasn’t captured by the app’s camera when you set it up initially? I noticed the purple hat was not in a bounding box and was definitely overlooked when you poured that set into bag #11, so if you ran across it later but couldn’t find it in the app, what do you do?
Very impressive, but the bags will pile up. To make a build, you'll need to fetch the parts needed from your existing bags. Should you take that apart later on, you'll have to scan all the parts again and sort them into additional bags. Frankly the drawers will look more organized than boxes and boxes of loose bricks in Zip-loc bags.
I literally did what I described live on stream! Each scan you do is numbered. You put that number on the bag you put that Lego in. Then when you need to find a piece it tells you which numbered bag to go to
If only it could match the lego part# as well it would take it to another level. As of now I think your good old fashion mk 1 eyeball is still slightly superior.
This would be great for just minifigure accessories. Ive boxes of them.bagged but not sorted.its very interesting to have a go with.or if you have a lot of sorted bricks sorted you can scan them and count how many you have.ive tried the counting and writing on paper what i have but didnt work out lol.great video kev.you explain things well i like that.
Well, it seems to stink at color recognition so far… 😂 i saw “white” was reflections of light. “Turquoise” seemed to be olive green… Once they tweak that (maybe more than one photo at a different angle per group of items to verify the list) it may be more helpful.
And it didn’t work well at all for me when I tried it. WAY wrong identifications. Thought candelabras were cups and other things. Flames were various orange and trans orange parts. Etc. Hope others have better luck.
I found the pieces he looked for within the time I saw the video in my well organized part collection... Feeding the app with information about my collection sounds also not good... Also I prefer to look for missing piece in Real and not going to heat up the planet for silly questions.. For business use in larger scale it's an timesafing tool...
Costly monthly or annual payments are required…7€/month 45€/year 99€/lifelong (which we know means, as long as the app is around) Nonetheless a great app
I'd like 42 red 1 x 2 bricks - here they are in these 39 bags , 2 hours later .... :P can it scan the correct colour for light bluish grey and light blue?
You might need a led panel instead of the paper to improve image quality. Just thinking out loud when the app says "natural light" it prob. wants 4000K light temperature, so any yellow light will affect the colour scanning, if you ask me. Amazing app!
Too pricey. I don’t do subscriptions, period. Lifetime is $100. No thanks! Good concept- I would probably try it just to count my already sorted pieces as a quick way to check myself at the PAB wall and online ordering binges. No Tim, you already have 300 black 1x4 plates. However, not for me at this cost level. I’d pay $30 for lifetime.
It's a great idea until you've uploaded all your pieces, got yourself tied into relying on it and they then announce the inevitable subscription payment model. I'll pass.
I'd be happy paying a reasonable one off price for these sort of apps. The moment I see monthly subscription I'm out, it's just profit for profits sake.
This seems very inefficient. Take less time on the front end and way more time on back end. I need 20 2x4. Go into these 17 bags. Cool but not efficient.
Great video! Loving the amount of lego content you're releasing...the technology in the app is very clever but I think I'll stick to my drawers, it's what I'm used to and for me scanning all my lego would take a massive amount of time, time I'd rather build 😂
