Rj Ronquillo and I are both huge Hendrix nuts. In this video we start down the path to finding the ultimate Hendrix tone. We took everything from run of the mill fuzz pedals from Dunlop and MXR that you can find at Guitar Center to super boutique hard to find fuzz pedals like the Burkos Third Stone and put them through their paces. Check out the video to see what pedals made it through this round. Coming up in part 2 more fuzzes and then we are on to my favorite part of Hendrix's tone the Vibe pedal!
Don't ever tease me by playing a few bars of Bold As Love, then stopping. It's cruel.
Haha! So true!
Texas Blues Alley Texas Blues Alley is watching this channel. Nice!
Thanks for making my day better gentlemen! My 1st boutique pedal was a Full Drive as well!!!
Quality video and great playing. Jimi’s music is still magical 50+ years later
Thanks! Jimi is the man!
@@BrettPapa Does RJ have any records out?
Great job with
RJ , more pedal madness on the way Brett , Anyhow storting with Fuzz is a blast !
Vibe pedal next! Thanks for watching!
The Papa, pedals and RJ. Pressed the like button before I pushed play.
Haha! Thanks for that!
yeah when I see that white strat it's automtic like and play
Another great episode
Thank you guys!
Sure thing!
Looking forward to watching part 2, and hoping you re-affirm my purchase of the FFM2 Mini Germanium....
Fab video ! I don't really like fuzz too much but it's always great to watch you both.
Thanks for checking us out!
Such a great video Brett !,..............First for me on your channel !......great guest !...........Beautiful Strat you have Rj !.........................Greetings from Quebec !
Thank ya! Glad to hear you like the vids!
Greetings from NY! Thanks for the vid, always enjoy when you guys get together to do a video! :)
Thanks for checking it out!
RJ, what happened to the SolidGold FX Spanish Castle fuzz? I thought you created some absolute Hendrix magic with that pedal!
Hobby guitarist to the stars here........... No worries, I subscribe to both your channels. I'm about 12-15 years older than the two of you, to me the fuzz along with wah and tremolo are the sounds of the 60's. The Stones used fuzz in Satisfaction, McCartney played fuzz on bass in the Beatles "Think For Yourself," Count Five's Psychotic Reaction and of course the mighty Hendrix himself. Now onto RJ's channel to see part 2 and to comment there; it's only fair!
Great playing RJ, good demo of very different pedals. A few other pedals to try are the Buffalo FX Germanium fuzz, and the Wren and Cuff Yourface Custom Fuzz, either silicone, or germanium, I also have a Wampler Velvet Fuzz, that is also a very pedal board friendly fuzz, it works well with Wah, not particular to where it sets, does a great, Big muff, and Fuzzface -ish type sound, Also the If 6was9 germanium and the BC-108.
Yep those are all great too! RJ and I both have some Wren and Cuff pedals and they are fantastic but we didn't have the ones that would be appropriate for this video.
Fulltone 70’s fuzz pedal sounds great. Thanks for the video ya”ll.
Yep, it is a great pedal as well. 69 too!
It makes an awful high pitched noise when guitar volume is rolled back to zero.
Cool man, Do you guys have more episodes to come? I just got done watching RJs part 2.
Yep a vibe video is coming next.
@@BrettPapa Awesome!
So many warm fuzzies.....
Warm, fuzzy, frothy goodness
Monterey! Thanks for the show.
That is a great pedal! Hendrix in a box!
Great video, thanks. I am not sure all the fuzz face users suffer from this, but my main issue with FF is the volume increase as you are rolling the vol knob for cleaning up (compared to the volume level that the guitar volume is dimed all the way ). It is kinda frustrating as it makes me use a booster pedal placed after for the volume compensation which is not desirable as it affects the fuzz character. Meanwhile, it appears to be more audible on germanium ones compared to the silicones. I am wondering to know if other people also complain about this and would like to hear their solutions.
Thanks for the info guys, I love my old Big Muff but I see a fuzz face in my future.
Good call! Why not have both is what I always say lol!
YES Eb forever forward! Screw the jam people- all music should be in Eb! Also 11:38 Hatha Yoga for Papa! Get it! Gotta say- Papa you taught me this years ago on your view about it- but there is NO BETTER clean tone then a cleaned up fuzz by rolling the volume back on the guitar! Next up- the Friedman Fuzz you taught that lesson on! That tone was epic!
I love hatha yoga!! Totally love that Friedman fuzz! It is a great pedal, I need to get one for sure. There pedals are all really great. The rolled down fuzz trick is the best, I mean thats how Jimi did it so how can we go wrong doing it too lol!
Eb is perfect for playing with "the jam people"
I play with boring people who just cant seem to play anything that isnt in E where if i was also in E id have to base my pentatonic around open and 12th fret, but being in half step down i instead play at the very first fret (great for buddy guy style) or at the 13th fret (and anywhere in between as they correspond)
i was gonna get a kemper but i cant part with my rotovib and jc-120. i cant find a single video that sounds even close to the real thing. i get that kid in a candy shop feeling everytime i get a new pedal. thanks for the video!
Nice selection of fuzz pedals! With wah before fuzz you need a buffer otherwise you can't hear the sweep properly, which is what Jimi did. Apparently fuzz pedals are sensitive to changes in impedance in front of them. Otherwise wah after the fuzz sounds good but the sweep can sound exaggerated, which is fine if that's your thing.
What buffer did Jimi use?
These 2 vids together are like the extended 'The Return Of The King' for fuzz :D
Haha!
I have a satisfaction circuit I made.,suppose to be the used in the song..,I can't get no ..satisfaction...I really need to box it now..but it sounds pretty good...love your channel bud
Thanks man! Not sure on that one. RJ might know. Check out the part 2 vid on his channel and ask him. He might know.
I really wanna hear that fuzz bix on a humbuckers guitar...btw what is that the purple fuzz third stone pedals?. Is good
I think I like the little hockey puck best!
It sounded great! They all do!
This is helpful. I love my Fuzz War (a Death by Audio product) but it often sounds like chimpanzees having a trash can fight in an airplane hangar. Perhaps rolling the gain off my TS-9 and running the Fuzz War through that might tighten things up a bit. Question though: won't all these pedals sound different depending on the amp they're patched through?
"sounds like chimpanzees having a trash can fight in an airplane hangar" You say that like it's a bad thing :p
For best results.. Optimize the pickup loading with a Germanium Fuzz Face. Hot humbucker? Just get it series parallel switching. Then set the Fuzz to just under oscillation with the guitar volume max. The lower your guitars resisitance the less the Fuzz pot will sweep before oscillation.. Then play with the volume pot.
Middle positions on strats bloom better.
Lol I use a Bandit Silverstripe dimed on the 1% setting
RJ we all have the same problem, you made me laugh with this one!
Haha!
Id appreciate any information on thst Strat!!! Is it a one off custom or can you buy it as seen here? Its BEAUTIFUL ansd sounds phenomenal!
Does your guitar have a treble bleed circuit? Your tone still sounds "bright" after rolling back the volume, or is this a quality of a fuzz pedal?
"I got a problem..." haha... serious GAS watching you guys have so much fun!
Haha, thanks for checking us out!
The last was the best to me. Not all that Hendrixy, but more like how *I* want to sound. Maybe more Gilmourish?
Great vid.
Thanks for checking it out! Kingtone stuff is awesome!!
What was the amp/speaker/speaker sim/recording path used in the demo? Would be good to state this at the beginning!
Friedman Small Box plexi channel into UA OX with a 412 cab in OX. Added a touch of verb in there too.
Heyy, talking sort of Hendrix tone.. What did Trower use at the very beginning of Long Misty Days song. that huge burning tone? Since Jimi did not use fuzz all the time, what else did he use most of the time to get his massive awesome tones? What good ones now would you use to get the same tones..that are easy to use, not real noisy, but still sound awesome vintage style?
R J knows his stuff.
Yes he does!
Good options here too I like germanium in my case use Fulltone Clyde Deluxe Wha+Fulltone 69mkII and clean very well better than silicon fuzzes but it's really your choice I like more vintage an inconsistent sounds. I like to tested analog man nkt275 germanium fuzz people tell me it's another great option. I prefer germanium I control gain with guitar pot volume very well silicon it's just diferent if you use always gain and hard sounds like last period of hendrix can be good. But recently I like to test and have got more fuzzes I want to expand my collection what kind of germanium fuzzes do you recommend me to test? Thank you. I know a lot of boutique labels around. Too many good choices germanium or silicon. Salute to all people from Spain
I like the "Hoof" by earthquaker. I think that is the Black Keys tone.
Very cool pedal!!
You should try the danelectro 3699 fuzz. It has the octave also but you have the choice with a foot switch. Sounds good.
Nice! I'll have to try that one out!
Great demo of some great pedals guy’s which leads me to a question. If I only had one Fuzz to cover most of Jimi’s music what would you choose?
The XTS Iridium if you can find one or the the Kingtone one.
@@BrettPapa Thanks a lot Brett, I’ll check them out! 🤙🏽
Find myself liking that XTS almost the most. But neck and neck with the EJ Fuzz.
The XTS fuzz is my favorite for sure! Awesome pedals if you can find one.
New to the channel! Super cool content. Why does the guy on the right use a lefty guitar?
Welcome! The guitar is just to celebrate Jimi!
Boost after Fuzz, got it. Any other pedal chain recommendations...on topic of course. But, feel free to shoot other videos on pedal combinations.
More on the way!
What about placement of Distortion & Overdrive in relation to Fuzz; and compatibility. That'd be cool.. almost as cook as you my friend! Thanks Papa.
Different gauge Picks make a difference on the Fuzz sound....along with the volume knob
Yep for sure!
FUZZ IS LIFE!
For sure!
I just bought my first fuzz pedal, Fulltone Octafuzz. Not sure it will stay on my pedalboard long but gonna see what it's all about
Its a great one. If you want just a strict fuzz his 69 pedal is really great! I need to pick another one up myself!
@@BrettPapa I am enjoying it so far. I have the octafuzz, soul food and a mxr super bad ass pedal to give me 3 different levels of dirt on my tone. I will say the fuzz has influenced my playing in a good way
MY only fuzz pedal is a Big Muff, I cant't get enough Big Muff! P.S. Thanks for the Robin Trower Bridge of Sighs lesson.
They are great! You are welcome!
Ended up getting the XTS and really like it but haven't tried it w my TS and CoT yet Fulltone is coming out with the Queen Bee fuzz that is supposed to beat all his other ones in his own words
Yeah I heard that. I am going to buy more of his stage soon.
Berkos Earth control actually is a bass control, not quite sure if it’s the same as the input trim control on ie the analogman sun face. Sun control is the fuzz control. You have got the mk1 model BTW, the single axis/experience mini switch
Awesome! Thanks!
Jeez. That Third Stone is unreal...
For sure!
"There's magic in the last 10% of the knob"..... who knew....
Absolutely!!!
_That’s what _*_she_*_ said._
“Just the tip.”
What the Dillio with Papa & Ronquillo?
Pedal Pushers with R.J. & Papa
What's with the screen going black at 25:15 and on?
Where are you playing the pedals into? Standalone I hate the fuzz face sound, pair it up before a good drive pedal (such as the 45 caliber and the Jan Ray) and it’s the best distortion sound ever. Or in a saturated Marshall amp...
Jan Ray works with everything! Such a great pedal!!
I'm not a fuzz guy but i think that the old DOD Flashback Fuzz was in fact a fuzz pedal into an overdrive (in a single pedal) and it sounds good, compressed and with enough gain.
Hmmm interesting. I will have to check one out.
Randy Hanson's board always change with good sounds ? Hendrix never talked about shop settings gear , just talk in his head sounds ..
Pops, I got to know. I have a black strat , cust shop tcx specials, black pickguard. Looks like gilmour :) my question is, im a trower, jimi, billy g srv , gilmour fan. I have fulltone deja vibe , flashback and boss katana 50. What fuzz and should i get dist or booster or ? If ya have a kayana , settings would be great
Help me man. If
All different sounds but I'd say some sort of a tube screamer for SRV type sounds and Big Muff type pedals for Gilmour. The Wren and Cuff pedals are awesome for that! Trower has a signature pedal from Fulltone.
@@BrettPapa thanks bud, theae pedals would not run all together :) just when called for. Now I have GAS, need to go get 4 or 5 peds.
Cant have too many peds, can ya ? :)
I have a Captain Coconut. It’s great!
For sure!
@@BrettPapa have you tried the Berkos Germanium Experience?
My first fuzz was way huge swollen pickle, still have it to this day great for pink floyd or ernie isley style fuzz solos,
However it doesnt work with a wah pedal so great, nor does it clean up much when rolling back the volume on the guitar so i think im gonna buy myself the mini jimi fuzz face for my birthday this weekend
im hoping the mini fuzz face
Sounds like a plan! Swollen sounds great!
Having a Boss Waza fuzz and Fjord Fuzz Berserk, one is lower cut and one is higher, either or will work with whatever guitar I throw at it.
Yeah I hear those are great.
I really liked the XTS Iridium but I don't see it on their site. You mentioned they don't make it anymore but that they were continuing to make it under another name? Can't find it Papa☹️
Give them a call. I think they plan to reissue it under another name.
@@BrettPapa Will do and Thank You for all these "Pedal Pusher" videos. I absolutely love em' 👍
Any information what they renamed that pedal as? As soon as I heard that pedal I knew it was the sound I’ve been looking for but I can’t find to much information on it. Thanks in advance!
After watching this video I looked deeper into the Monterrey. I ended up buying it and man does it rule! I still want all the other fuzzies in this video though. Haha.
Fantastic pedal for sure!!
I want that Gary Clark Jr "Numb" fuzz. Which pedal should I buy?
I think he uses a Fulltone Octafuzz with just the Fuzz setting turned on. I could be wrong but I've seen it on his board. Also with him a lot of the tone is how the Fuzz reacts with the reverb.
@@BrettPapa Cool, thanks Brett.
Hendrix used to turn his fuzz off when he used his wah (or on after, like for voodoo child)
i'm going to be the annoying one and suggest a different brand:) But the pedal pawn fuzz is the ultimate hendrix fuzz, and has the best clean up of any pedal i've ever played, anyone considering a FF should seriously look at this!! Great vid
Hmmmm, haven't seen that one. I'll have to check it out. Thanks for the tip!
@@BrettPapa UK made but getting a great name out there, think there's a recent eric gales video around somewhere, thanks again for the awesome channel!
Is your battery pointing north ...... ..great..
Lol pretty much!
I've got an Analogman LG Sunface I love
Those are great!
Wow! Diggin' that Iridium pedal! Oh and what's up with that beautiful Strat R.J. was teasing us with dude? She's beautiful. What's the backstory on that purchase?
Iridium is amazing!
Papa : "Does this guitar is stock ?"
RJ guitar's is 4000$, i hope at this price the pickups are good ! :-)
Killer playin...
Haha!
The Wayhuge swollen pickle is the best. I know this because I have a way huge swollen pickle and I love to play with it all day.
Wow, lol!
Don’t flatter yourself. You just have small hands.
@@CentaurusRelax314Yeah, but It's a small pedal fool!
Brett, I love watching these videos about Fuzz pedals for playing Hendrix. But I just can’t seem to get Fuzz pedals to always work right with my amp. I use a Suhr Badger 35 (with EL84’s) that I run on the edge of breakup. It sounds awesome with boost pedals. But Fuzz’s just don’t achieve the Hendrix thing. I am wondering if it’s an EL84 thing? Or do I need to run the amp cleaner. Do I need headroom? I tend to run the built in power scaling down at 2.5 watts ish? Are you running your Friedman clean or crunchy?
It might be an 84 thing although I used to have a Divided by 13 RSA31 which is more of a Vox type circuit and I got pretty good results in the Hendrix department. However I was using an OD for that. Try an OD instead. A. Great pedal for that is the Barber Gain changer! Great pedal that not many people know about.
Y don't they sell the big 70s head stock for lefties I can't find any. I have to order a righty 70s mod head stock and put it on cause I can't find a lefty head stock. And I gotta get roasted maple cause I can't find a 4 bolt reg mapled on smh. Fender get ur stuff together. Just sell everything we need u would get so much more money. Anyways amazing tone I have the Hendrix wah, a MXR uni vibe and a Hendrix Fuzz face with a half stack marshall. Im trying to get as much to Hendrix sound as possible lol. Now if I can only get Hendrix hands I'd be good.
MXR Hendrix Limited Edition 70th Anniversary Tribute Series JHM1 Fuzz Face is hands down the best effects pedal for the job....imo 🎸🎼🎤
They are all great.
I'm impressed by how the Momterey sounded for only having a fuzz control. I can't say that any of them sounded better than the Hendrix mini Fuzzface.
Monterey is a great pedal!!
It also has a level for the fuzz.
The Mona ray is great
For sure!
Do a video on leslie emulation. It would be cool
Yeah that would be cool. I love those kinds of pedals.
@@BrettPapa have you tried the vent?
Does anyone have list of the pedals used in this demo?
Check the description area down below the video!
papastache102 - see a few mfg names like MXR but I don’t see the pedals listed at all. Can you list them? There was one that I really liked but you guys talked so fast I couldn’t figure out what the name of it was. Thanks!
@The Papa if you never heard Hendrix with splattery fuzz i‘d recommend you listen to Songs for groovy Children with the band of gypsys! I think it‘s the absolute best performance of Hendrix!
Yeah I love the Gypsy's stuff!
@@BrettPapa i like it damn near as much as the experience stuff! Love your stuff too you learned me the hendrix embellishments and im forever grateful for that! 🙌🏽
you guys are hilarious
Haha thanks!
Haha thanks!
We need a "In search of the Ultimate Eric Johnson tone"!!!
Hmmmm, we might be able to do something like that.
@@BrettPapa Thank you for replying, that would be awesome!! I would definitely watch that too!
I enjoy your videos tremendously and this one especially. A pitty I could not see clearly which ones you were using when ... perhaps you could have used a different shooting method without blackouts . Nevertheless I enjoyed greatly.
Thanks!
The Xts is my first choice.
Me too!! My fav fuzz!
Monterey All The Way!
It's an awesome pedal!!!
I'd vote for the fuzz face mini turquoise for a hendrix tone.
Those are great!
I just noticed there’s no Roger Mayer fuzz represented. He *is* the guy that built Hendrix fuzz after all
Only could fir so many in there haha!
@@BrettPapa you guys did an awesome job! I can’t help but wonder what the Mayer Axis into a Wampler Plexi Drive would sound like.
Great video. However, if anyone can locate a Cat Coconut for under a G, buy it.
Might be worth it! It is so good from what I can remember!!
Jones'n for fuzz...
Everyone needs at least one!!
@@BrettPapa or, 3 or 4... 🤓
IF 6 WAS 9 HAS MY VOTE
9:55 Are You Experienced?
Well I ammmmmmmmmmmm!
There's no such thing as a short pedal show, even though this one is only half as long as "That" one. Nor should there be.
Haha!
XTS Iridium sounds best to me
Me too! One of the best fuzzes ever in my opinion.
@@BrettPapa i switched from boosting it with a Nobels ODR to an Xotic BB preamp. Wow.
Coconut for 1100 on Reverb haha
Wow they were $400 when they came out I think.
@@BrettPapa Phew!
Honestly, you can get really close with almost fuzz pedals and a fender or marshall style tube amp but if you really wanna nail it, a fender tweed bassman or a Marshall 45/100 is the ticket. Plug in a strat and you’re already closer than other rigs with fuzz pedals.
Sounds like a plan!
Shotout to Mike at Analogman Freeman fenderfuckyou paying more for a left guitar
You want a captain coconut?
Yes!!! Send it to me if you have one!!! Lol
@@BrettPapa it's yours for 500 :)
Holy cow that guitar looks awesome but it would shit me off the planet.
Nice video but useless without the amp settings
All of the setting were pretty much straight up.
@@BrettPapa I mean the amp tone is fantastic here, what amp was it, what position of each know, which input if several... All that stuff would be amazing to know! English is not my first language so I'm not sure what straight up means when referring to amp settings. Still nice video but would feel it much more useful with amp taken into consideration
guys love you, but you're making an info vid. stop saying this one etc. please say the name...help us out a little :)
The guy on left should trade his guitar for a tractor 🚜
Haha!
