How to Plant a Hazelnut Orchard

- With all of the great new blight-resistant varieties released from Oregon State University, hazelnut growers are replanting blight-infested orchards as quickly as they are able. Fall is the best time to plant to allow the trees time to get established well before the growth of spring; however, adverse weather often limits growers' ability to plant to a very short window, so it is important to be prepared and plant as efficiently as possible. Love it where he says plant the trees with the "roots facing down". Reminds me of the guy laying sod who had to keep yelling to his helper "green side up".
The roots are the parts with leaves growing out of them right?
I'm (partially) from Ordu, turkey, world's biggest hazelnut exporter (also the best ;) ), and I've never seen an orchard like that, we do it very differently here, the hazelnuts are in small colonies/bundles called an ocak, and all the place is full of wild greenery, we collect it by hand too
Abd de misiniz ?
Merhaba, sanırım bu diktikleri çeşit bizim ülkemizde ki yabani çeşit olan Bolu Fındığı (Corylus Colurna) meyveler tıpkı bolu fındığı meyvelerine benziyor, ağaçlarda kazık köklü. Eğer öyleyse bu adamlar fındık yemiyor, resmen taş yiyor :)
I’d love to see videos of your area farms.

Great video, now I'm ready to plant my 3 trees! Ha ha!!
i guess this is the way to go for large scale efficiency. We have a tiny hazenut grove here in the mountains. Exact opposite of flat ground. All the trees have been worked into the mountain side on SW facing slope. Good old shovel. Definitely no round-up or anything except for some traps for the japanese beetles that seem to like them. Put down a bit of bone meal and wood ash each year. All the trees look and produce brilliantly.
respect from Turkey 👍

hii sir what is your hazelnut orchard elevation from sea level and what is the chilling hour requirement for this variety (please name the variety as well thank you
Succes! 👍
Lot of work.Thank you!
What kind of paint are you using and why?
Hello I was wondering how much water we need for Hazelnut? And what kind of temperature is needed? Many thanks
In Michigan we graduated from a shovel to an auger in the sixties. When the first tree planter showed up, the auger has been laying in the barn ever since. Four men a planter and a tractor can plant over a thousand trees per day
All cool)) 💪👍
Hello, please can I planted trees hazelnut In an area the temperature varies in the summer 6/7/8 40°?
Wait how is that new orchard getting water, is it flood irrigated?
Oregon Hazelnut orchards are traditionally drylands farmed. Many areas get plenty of rainfall during the year to provide for the tree's needs. As the price of hazelnuts has gone up though over the years, and some orchards are being planted in less than ideal areas, growers have been installing drip irrigation, or sometimes just mobile sprinkler systems to irrigate in the heat of the summer.
Thanks for the information! What would be the right fertilizer for helping hazelnuts - I have been after the arbor day folks on this questions for a dozen years with no reply!
I would recommend reaching out to Nik Wiman from Oregon State University. You may also be interested in this video: pacificnutproducer.com/2019/03/08/nutritional-recommendations-for-young-hazelnut-trees/
I have required for grafted pista plant India, plz tell me how many charge for 50 plants
Wow great job! So impressive
where can you buy small trees in bulk?
What's the spacing here?
The hazelnut accepts many soils. Only in heavy and permanently wet substrates should it not be planted
Really? World's best and most hazelnut comes from the anatolian east blacksea region (ordu-giresun), and it's always wet and rainy there... it's also hazelnut's origin of birth
CaliforniaAgNet. Can you explain what must be done regarding pollen? I didn't understand the message.
You need a pollinizer variety to go along in the orchard, but you don't need bees to pollinate hazelnuts
How close must you plant the polllinizer variety ?
@@RobertMOdell I think within 100 feet, and the wind is what polinates the trees, so keep this in mind. I just bought 4 different types of hazelnut for my orchard, I buy one of each each time and plant in a square or rectangle.
@@jasonbourne1596 Sounds like a good plan to me. Although 100 feet seems quite far.
What type of paint is he applying to each tree?
Tried to answer. God knows where my comment went. He said plain white latex paint to keep bark from sunburning. It wears off after a few seasons. You can also use tree collars to reduce sunburn and deer munching.
👍
What’s on that paint roller .
Sun protection. Just white paint
what is the name of orchid lay out tractor tool?
Do you mean the scriber?
Do hazelnut trees, planted from seed, create good productive trees? Or to they need to be grafted to from another source?
Many utilize the tree suckers to grow new trees. Micropropagation is a new method of growing new trees, but that is done at the nursery.
It's a crap shoot whether you will get good trees from seed. Some will be good some bad. Rooted suckers will give you a clone of the parent.
*You don't water them?*
First year after planting at least once a week if it doesn't rain
Does hazel nut have male female pair to be planted
Yes, they need a pollenizer. Check out the Oregon State University Extension Website for information on which varieties go well together
CaliforniaAgNet thanks
I just planted 4. Different kinds in a square grid pattern in my back yard today.
How many hazelnuts can u plant in an 1 Hectares land
I don't know but at least they should be 15 feet apart.
Please, can you say me what he doing on 3:10 and what the material he uses?
Gathering Compost as a mulch and slow-release fertilizer to go around the base of the trees.
He's scooping up compost to be placed around the base of the trees as fertilizer.
Why paint them?
They are painted to protect them from getting sunburned. In their early years, they have a very small canopy of leaves to shade and protect the trunk. Once a trunk gets sunburned it may crack and become susceptible to pests and diseases that can kill the tree.
@@CaliforniaAgNet will any paint do?
fence needed?
Only if you are trying to keep out/slow down large pests
@@CaliforniaAgNet Thanks.
