- I had the wonderful opportunity to sit down with Matthew "Leth" Griffin, head of marketing and PR for Team Cherry and Mongoose Rodeo. We talked about his experiences working on Hollow Knight and its sequel, as well as the upcoming indie metroidvania Crowsworn. Along the way, we learned a bunch of interesting details about all three games, including a clarification on the Silksong delay (and more!)

19:02 it was actually a great decision to hire fan translators. I remember in the beginning I was trying to decide to play on english or on my native language and when I saw that russian translation was made by alphyna (the girl who was a part of Ice-Pick Lodge and contributed to creation of Pathologic) I knew the translation will be good and true

Noting on the translations thing- I am so happy they worked on it. I had my first in-person semester of high school last year and was having a sort of odd time connecting to people after so long in isolation, and I was able to connect with someone who had played hollow knight in russian before they immigrated to Canada. So special thanks to the translators, as she is still the only person in real life I have met to have played hollow knight lol
Great interview! The music does compete with Leth's low voice at times though.

Wow you edited this 3-4 hour stream pretty fast. Also, thanks for making the interview happen, we certainly learned a lot of cool stuff from Leth, like his past, some HK voice acting, Crowsworn, and he said he played Silksong! That means we are close 🎉🎉. 2.2 releases in October and Silksong (hopefully) is also around the corner.

2 cents for feedback: Boosting the audio and/or lowering the music would have helped greatly.
It's too late now, because my guess is, you recorded it all together in one audio form, but I think it's never wrong to put a "Gain" filter on the Desktop audio in OBS and boost it by 3-7 db, while also lowering every other sound by 30%, even if you think everything is fine - especially for an interview or when you need to hear the other party.
I'm so grateful to see more on Hungry Knight 3, I love the first one and I hope this new game is a return to formula (2nd game is mid)
I was PANICKING when I heard Leth’s comment about the blogpost cuz I knew it would be misconstrued, I’m glad we could get that addressed before any damage was done
My favorite moment was when at 1:48:50 there was a message "mods really like deleting the messages lol"

the Crow game looks pretty polished, but for me the charm of Hollow Knight is what sold me, and the gameplay / exploring kept me playing

I got hollow knight for free on ps+ monthly free games and never touched for over a year. One day I was bored and decided to download it and try it having seen a feew videos about it. Now I have over 150 hours over playstation and laptop and I can say that Hollow knight has trully changed my life.

Therefore, we can reasonably conclude that they either stopped working on the game, or are working much slower than before. Hear me out;
That may sound crazy but it's actually a really common thing that you can't really blame the Devs for. Burnout is real, and they aren't financially pressured and indebted to Kickstarter backers anymore like they were when they made Hollow Knight. Not only are they debuting to a giant audience that will judge the 1.0 version of the game right out of the gate, but they also have been thinking about nothing but Hollow Knight nonstop for nearly a decade now. It's only realistic that this would happen.
I know so many internet projects, Rom hacks, texture packs, even fanfic storywirters that have dealt with this before. When you lose the flame for making art, then it can become a major chore, and obligatory passionless art always turns out bad. However...
Team Cherry is a respectable studio though, and they would NEVER release a lackluster product. So when everything they make is lackluster because of burnout, then the amount of real quality progress they make for the game decreases over time.
It's no question that they aren't working on the game much anymore. At least, not productively working. One look at their communication would tell you that.
But that DOESN'T make them bad Devs. It actually makes them really good ones since they refuse to put out lackluster work. The problem is that perfectionists with burnout typically never finish their work. I know so many abandoned internet projects that will never ever be finished. They'll just continue being delayed forever...

@@kikkerslikker4533 Upon further research I actually think you're correct. The finishing touches headline was a product of bad journalism.
However, in early 2022 Leth did say that the wait "can't be too much longer" when they won most anticipated game. And the initial release date on steam was all the way back in 2020. Unless the developer was intentionally deceiving fans, they had every reason to believe they would finish by 2020. It's been over 3 years since then and it doesn't even have a release date anymore.
With all this and their total lack of communication, I don't think it's a crazy assumption to say that they aren't getting much work done on the game that much anymore.
(I'm not accusing them of slacking off, I just think that scope fatigue and burnout can make make it difficult to put out quality work so most of everything gets shelved. This is a common Dev thing. See the metronomeproject)
