  • Setting tappets on you classic mini, Its and easy diy job, why take it to the garage when you can do it yourself? , 10 thou hot 12 thou cold , 13 thou for 1.5 ratio all assuming you have lower rate -not race poundage valves spring
Shown are late sintered steel rockers and minispares 1.5 ratio roller tip rockers, there are other type but setting is pretty universal
Why not re-torque the head (50 ft lbs ) and fit a set of plugs too ?- remember 1/4 turn after contact with the crush washer on spark plugs, overtightening them will cause misfires!

Man, these cars were so much easier to work on compared to modern cars.

I’ve also been told that if the vehicle has a manual transmission, you can put it in the highest gear and push on the car until the next valve opens up as opposed to turning the crank with a breaker bar or ratchet.

Love that IDA Weber and supercharger combo! Do you sell that version as a kit?

Daran Leighton , yep £1795 for the downdraught kit , needs bonnet clearance hole though!

if I replace the sandard rockers with MED 1.5 roller rockers would they need torquing down to the head first before setting the rocer clearances? Just need to check before I start the job, thanks.

Ideally you should remove the head and change the gasket , you can cold and try draining the water and swapping rockers quickly and re torquing the head this works most of the time .

I thought for roller rockers you were supposed to check clearances via the side of the roller, not through it forward?

This is the way i've always set them, I suppose if you not used to the ''feel' of the drag over the top of the valve maybe you should start sliding the blade sideways, it would take a reasonable amount of force to depress the valve by wedging the blade in but i think you can see I'm using minimal effort ?

Makes no difference, all about the feeling resistance

Take the spark plugs out will help a lot as the pistons are not going to have full compression
Surprised he didn't take them out to start with

I don't normally take them out -compression pressure does not build up at the low rpm from turning the engine over as the rings gaps let the pressure escape.

question. is it the same for intake and exhaust. also seen people say 13 thou and or 16 thou for standard cam. why the difference ?

Different valve to rocker clearance settings change the seat timing of the cam , extra clearance manifests in wear and noise . I tend to set at 10 thou hot if its on the dyno. If you are using alloy 1.5 rockers add a couple of thou extra to give the same cam to follower clearance as with 1.3 rockers .
