  • It is a city on the Ionian coast of Sicily, Italy. The ship could not dock closer.
It is likely you will cross the bridge onto the island of Ortygia. Our film walks you that way first. Although you may get lost in the narrow alleys, it won’t be for long as it is only 1km by 500 metres wide and full of history. The western coast is the place to aim for by late afternoon when it is in the sun with a view over the lagoon.
On the other side of the bridge, within a few blocks, you are at the ruins of the ancient Greek Apollo Temple and a market which is open until 2 pm.
    The adventure starts.
The fountain and Cathedral Square are two musts, then the seafront and the castle. The Cathedral, also a huge nod to St Lucy, claims to be the only church still in use today which was a pagan temple. It was a Mosque in 878 and reclaimed in 1089. The interior has a fee so is often an optional extra.
If you wish to take a tour Syracuse is not only known for its ancient ruins it was included as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2005. The reasons included the "monuments and archaeological sites situated in Syracuse are the finest examples of outstanding architectural creation spanning several cultural aspects; Greek, Roman and Baroque", following on that Ancient Syracuse were "directly linked to events, ideas and literary works of outstanding universal significance. The Greek theatre dates back to the 5th century BCE. With 59 rows it could accommodate up to 15,000 spectators and is one of the biggest ever built.
