This one is so great. Sassy Mitch is my favorite Mitch. 😍 You should check out their cover of "Gold." It's a live recording like this one. Mitch's vocals are insane. So is Kevin's beatboxing.
I agree!
I'm probably a bit older than most Pentaholics, so my feeling about covers/originals maybe belongs to an earlier time: to me, performing and songwriting are separate skills, both very demanding, and it's very exceptional that the same person is top-quality at both. (When I was in college, the term "cover" didn't really exist: EVERYBODY performed songs written by others, and a dozen singers or groups might record the same song and have hit records with it.) So to me, Pentatonix are extraordinary, one-in-a-million singers (separately and together) and arrangers. As songwriters, they're... good, very good even, but maybe not on that same level. But the industry now insists that "you're not really first-rate unless you write your own material," which I don't agree with. They've done a fantastic series of covers and that should be enough. That said, a number of their originals are very much worth attention and admiration.
Pentatonix has included original songs since their first EP, but their first all-original album was in 2015.
I love their original 'Can't sleep love'
Basically I hear and love everything they put out.
Especially the PopSpring 2016 live version. I LOVE Mitch’s rap so much.
I started listening to them in the beginning, so mostly covers, but then over time, more and more originals. I love them in all the different colors of their work. I think the covers are typically a bit more upbeat, so I often listen to those for more energetic, more chipper music while many of their originals (not all) are more emotional, for a different mood. I'd listen to them sing the phone book, really.
I listen to everything PTX does - covers and originals.
You mean upgrades 😁
Please react to one of their no-mic performances, like "Valentine" or "Take Me Home" to see how well they control the blend of their voices. Any of their private performances of these is good.
Also, in every concert they sing one song with no mic or a single mic, which can also show you this. "Run to You" and "That's Christmas to Me" are good songs for this, though you'll probably need someone to point you to a video with good quality.
Edit: I just realized that except for "Valentine", the other three are originals.
A link to "Run to You" off-mic: ua-cam.com/video/PWoV3-fuBU4/v-deo.html
This was the very first time they sang a song off-mic in a concert, back in 2014.
And of course there's the amazing off-mic performance of "Daft Punk", if you haven't watched it already. ua-cam.com/video/tw4YCsHXKgI/v-deo.html
Probably covers more...but just because there is many of them. But that being said, I do listen to and enjoy just about every original they put out. Btw...they preformed The Luck Ones on Jimmy Kimmel last night, it's up on YT. 👍
Try Love again (original written by Avi and Kevin) and Run to you (also written by Avi and Kevin) Sing and misbehavin are great as well. I agree though with another commenter that everything they do is an original. They always put their own unique stamp and spin on the covers and back in the day everyone did other songwriters/performers songs. I love Hallelujah but think how many performers have sung it. Its my favorite by Pentatonix because its so uniquely them and doesn't sound like anyone else. Beautifully done and a such a warm hug for the soul. Thanks for the reaction. Enjoyed it!
While you did compliment Avi's overall bass in this, I'm surprised you didn't comment on any of the 3 times he held that low note for so long. They're definitely highlights of the song.
That blew me away!
Jakob is an instrumentalist not a singer so he may not have noticed as much as when Avi is mimicking an instrument or other percussive effects with Kevin as part of the rythmn section.
The early eps usually had a couple of originals. In 2015 they released their original album Pentatonix. It's really good. Lots of great songs. The are a couple of covers on the deluxe version but mainly originals. In one of your previous reactions I mentioned their pop spring 2016 performance it has 3 great originals in it. I like both. There are more covers but I love most of their originals! Sound of the one that song have videos bb but are worth a listen are Na Na Na, Misbehavin, Natural Disaster and on my way home. Also Cracked, Can't sleep love and water are in the pop spring concert. But the are many more.
I think with the covers you're more amazed at how they're able interpret the existing song and then put the PTX spin on it. So yes, your comparing and in a lot of cases, like their cover better, but then you have the original music that you love and appreciate in a completely different way. 💕
Yes!
I mean, yes you reacted to "No"!! It's always so enjoyable.
I love watching Avi perform, he really puts everything into it ❤ and his bas is absolute 🔥
As far as their music goes I would say I'm a 65% original/35% covers. I am a big fan of their first original album - Pentatonix
I love their originals but some of the covers it seems like I never heard the song before be cause they enunciate
One of my faves!! 🙌🙌
Probably covers more, just by default, since they have so many. But their new album next week is originals! 🎉🎉✨✨
Also, Kevin & Avi in this particular cover are superstars! They are memorizing to watch!
Those notes Avi held SO long!!!! & Kevin’s creative sounds!!! It just makes you wanna dance.... as they clearly felt too!
Thanks for reacting! I listen to them all! Natural Disaster is a fan favorite as is Cracked!
I like their original music a lot but they have so much music and I love it all, honestly.
First original album was 2015, newest due Feb 12, 2021 :) I feel many of the covers "sound" original, as their spin is unique, and I appreciate the majority of their original tracks, too. The fun of the originals is that the arrangements more target the individual vocalists.
One of my favourites! Love Mitch, but Avi sneaks in and steals the show! ...and Kevin! Wow!
Yeah I agree! I was surprised he didn’t mention the very loooooong bass notes that Avi was holding out! I thought it would be the first thing he noticed.
Agreed!
I listen to everything but my favs are the older ones when Avi was with them. But I'll have to say their cover of Blinding Lights is up there with their best covers. Their new album The Lucky Ones is awesome as it's all their original works.
Her given name is Kirstin but she goes by Kirstie.
I listen to all of it! It doesn’t matter to me if it’s original or a cover. I don’t have a preference. I love Superfruit too! I think I binge watched all of PTX, Superfruit, KO’s solo stuff, Avi’s solo stuff...during quarantine. Maybe twice 😬
Yeah...especially Avi's quarantine lives were absolute gold😭😭
My favorite cover. I've come back this one many, many times.
Yes - Kirstin, you got it! THX for your reaction! As they have done far more covers, I do listen to more covers and I think they have a special gift for that. But I do love some of their originals very much - unfortunately the ones I love best don't have a video "Water", "New Years Day" but I do love their Christmas song original very much too "That's Christmas to me" and for this they do have a video out.
I love all three of those originals too!! Plus “Light in the Hallway!, the most beautiful lullaby written by Scott with Avi as lead.
Great reaction. They have more originals than some think. "That's Christmas To Me, Can't Sleep Love, CRACKED, and more. The Lucky Ones Album soon to come out is originals !!! :)
They have more covers than originals, which isn't surprising given where they started and how they had to originally market themselves. (Even given how successful and popular they are, it is very rare to hear their music on the radio except during Christmas!) Added to that, is the simple fact that it is easier to figure out how they can adapt a cover to their style than it is to write an original song and arrange it. Kinda like comparing apples to oranges. Unlike many other mainstream artists who are as very busy as they are, they don't buy songs from professional song writers - nothing wrong with doing so! It's just not what they do. Writing an original song takes time. And they do it while touring, arranging new material, recording new albums, etc... all at the same time. Usually. This past year has been very different compared to their normal. (Seriously. Check out their documentary 'On My Way Home' or their PTXperience vlogs for an insight into everything they do behind the scenes) As for which I prefer more - I don't compare songs that way. Either I like it or I don't - whether it's an original or not doesn't have any bearing on it. Because they have so many more covers, I like more of them; but that isn't to say I like them more than their original stuff.
Doesn’t really matter they are just so amazing... I loooooove your reaction videos of PTX and your others really do enjoy
thanks so much!
YES!!! I was really hoping you'd do this song.
hope you enjoyed it
At first, I listened almost entirely to their covers because they were so innovative and almost always enrich the original. Now, however, I probably split 50-50 and really enjoy hearing their originals as well as the covers. Their collaborations are also a favorite of mine.
Uhhh.. I love this one. Thank you for the reaction 🤩
Thank you
They have done so many covers, so by default I listen to more of those. And almost every one I prefer to the original they are covering lol They’re originals are very good to, just not as many of them. They are known for their covers because it’s what they started doing after they won the Sing Off and started UA-cam videos. Their catalog is HUGE! You can do reactions everyday and you’ll be busy for a really long time lol
Echo the above!
I love them both, of course - anything they do is fabulous, but I think I enjoy the covers more, because they make every song better than the original IMHO
Also for me personally I love listening to both, their covers and their originals equally. But of course there are far more covers than originals and although I love both it's kinda different. The covers are fun, because you can recognize the talent and awesomeness because you can compare to the originals (to be honest I almost always prefer the PTX versions lol). Their originals on the other hand are more personal, so they kind of have another quality, "The Lucky Ones" for example gave me goosebumps from the very beginning, because it tells their story and feels so connected to them. I hope that makes sense, haha.
I listen to their originals and covers about the same. I LOVE all of their originals. They have covered SO many songs, in general, you really can't help but listen to more covers if you listen to the whole catalog. I love all of their originals. I do have to say, I prefer their covers over the originals of those songs 99% of the time.
Great reaction! I have appreciation for both their covers and originals. The first video I heard from them was a cover of Gotye's Somebody That I Used to Know, and it was incredible. The thing about their covers - they always put a twist on it so it's almost like an original. I love this video, they are all having fun, especially Avi. He dances in his chair the whole time. Looking forward to the next one (hint - PTX Thrift Shop has killer harmony).
If you go back and look at the Sing-Off competition they were told, and it appears to be standard, to work with song writers together to come up with originals and they have. They were taught through the Sing-Off to arrange covers and "make them their own " and it is a faster process, a week for a cover but much more for an original. Witness they put out a whole album of covers with a brand new member, Matt, very quickly after Avi left of all covers.
Besides it is 2 different approaches - the singer/performer vs the singer/songwriter.
Avi's solo work for example has all been originals with a couple of covers, chosen either because they were fun or they traditionally have a bass lead and he admired them. He does collaborate with other writers on ideas and approaches but the act is focused on original composition and new music.
PTX was developed as a pop a cappella band so the fun and appeal was seeing how they could creatively take a known popular song and "make it their own" without instruments.
2 different types of artists. In Pentatonix Avi, Scott and Kevin were the original content and arrangement guys (with Ben Bram) it took Kirstin much longer and she didn't really work with any of her other bandmates as much on music composition. I have not seen a significant amount from Mitch except when he was pulled in to Scott compositions when they were roommates such as "Light in the Hallway", a tour exclusive that Avi always sang at Scott's request because he voice carries emotional content the best. To see and react to it you have to chose a live performance like Avi's other solo PTX song "Standing By" or their adaptation of Marvin Gaye's song changed into "the PTX chair girl" routine.
Pentatonix was and is a live act first and music composers second. Touring is their big thing.
Just adding another comment regards your praise of Avi & Kevin. I know they shared an apartment and when you see them sitting together like this you can see just how hard they work...hours spent honing their craft and in this song having so much fun... They did write a few songs together like "Run to You' and Avi helped Kevin with singing lessons and Kevin & Avi at times share the sound effects. Many a time Avi used his overtones but Kevin got the accolades lol Thanks for your great analysis. Love from Australia
Jacob, as a pentatonic fan it doesn't make any difference whether they are singing a cover our original music.. The thing that is most amazing about them is every time you hear them they're always getting better and then when you discover something from years ago it may not have the same technical expertise our production values that they display today but it's still superb. Pentatonix set a high bar for themselves years ago and they've never varied from that philosophy. Another way of putting it is they never publish junk. And those same reason that's why I'm a fan of your channel, you're always interesting and your opinions are interesting and appreciated.
I probably listen to 50/50 originals vs covers. It’s so fun to listen to how they change a song that I know and love, but also I love their originals so much. I usually get stuck on a song per day. Lol and then I go watch all available reactions and from their channel. Also with Superfruit I just listen to their whole album almost every day.
wow nice!
I just love PTX. Started with covers but really love some of their original. I’ve really fallen down the rabbit hole.
But Mitch-his voice seems to change depending on the song. Love Scott, Kirsten, Kevin, Avi and Matt. 🤣🤣
Thanks again for the good reaction
I recommend „Natural Disaster” live, Avi’s bass is just insane 🙌🏻🙌🏻 and „Love Again” Kevin’s beatbox is from another planet 🙌🏻🙌🏻
I too am older than probably most Pentaholics but to me, it does not matter whether something is a cover vs. an original. I listen to it and I have my favorites based on how they make me feel, how much fun I have watching it (like this one), etc. The fact that it is a cover or not really does not matter to me. I had not even heard Meghan's version until after I saw the PTX video and then went and looked up the original and I actually like PTXs more. I had heard "Problem" before but again, I like the PTX version more because I can actually understand what they are saying versus AGs very breathy style that I have a hard time understanding (again, I'm old! LOL). I LOVE how much fun they have with this one, especially Mitch who actually kind of breaks and laughs a little. Plus, I think this is my favorite of all of Mitch's looks/hair. :-) I also love the dynamics of Avi and Kevin and them together. PTX can do no wrong to me!
Great reaction. I love thier original music. Going forward please do the "Sing off" performances 1-13. Some amazing live performances under preassure and good back story. Trust me do this next. Much love and keep on keepin on J.
Doesn't matter to me, I listen to all of their music, whether original or cover, whether it has a video or not. ☺️
nice!!
Oh yeah! Sassy Mitch! Attitude is everything with this song and of course Avi’s crazy bass and Kevin’s impeccable beat. Lol. Fun song. 🤗
I like anything they do...originals and covers. I find that when they cover a song, I can never go back to the original artists' version. The mash-ups are singularly awesome to me as well. Just something about the songs being essentially stripped down to voices makes them more appealing.
I love ur reactions so much! Keep moving on. Thank u a lot for this really high quality stuff (if we can speak about reacting quality at all)
It's an a cappella thing to do covers (think of all the Christmas music). As for originals the first 2 they did were 1 by Scott and 1 by Avi in the first year I believe 2012.
This song was brought to the band by Avi. Not his usual vibe. Avi is very good with camera presence BTW draws you to him probably the formal opera training. (Try on "Black is the Color of My True Love's Hair" collab with Peter Hollens to really see that).Mitch is also quite good with drawing you to him in the "couch 🛋 " videos in particular.
I love there originals but truthfully i love and listen to both
I hear Kirstin more than Scott actually on this. Her harmonies really stand out to me.
i do listen to the originals more, but i also listen to the covers a lot. everything pentatonix, really
Such a great cover!!
I listen to everything they do. PTX could sing the ingredients from a cereal box and I'd still listen
If you haven’t seen Avi’s solo music you should. All these people are blessed no matter where they are. 🥰
I love their covers & originals equally but for different reasons. They write amazing original music & almost always make a song better with the way the arrange a cover & make it their own, so much so that I've often stopped listening to the original song! A great example would be to listen to Kiarra's song Gold, then PTX covering it & you'll probably see what I mean. They get pigeonholed into doing covers & Xmas songs but when they can do original music it's great, & they really should get more radio play then they do
I listen to everything except one song - If I Ever Fall In Love with Jason Derulo, I personally can’t stand this song. Their originals are awesome with Run To You and That’s Christmas to Me being my favourites, but their covers are so good that I generally will never listen to the original again and their mash ups are in a class of their own - perfection
Mitch has so much sass in this one and you are correct with his tambour cutting through. I can always pick his voice in any song. His live Messer performance of Angels Pray is so beautiful
You should also react to their cover in "Ride" by twenty one pilots, it is also a live performance hoping to you reaction to that ♡
Please react to evolution of Ariana Grande or evolution of Rihanna by them! It’s great, I promise! :)
He's already done Ariana. Check his PTX playlist. 😊🎶
Ahh thank you! :)
Avi & Kevin were the stars of this imho. Can't take my eyes (or ears) off Avi lol.
I agree Avi is one special dude him and Kevin had a special connection
Who’s here after just watching Qofy do this one? 🔥
Yup
They only use one or two overhead mics when recording these live tracks, so Kirstin should have "mixed" her voice a little stonger in this song. She can really belt when she wants to, so there's no reason she couldn't have been more "forward" as you like to say.
Please listen to Valentine - amazing.
You should check out the live version of "Aha" Singapore, if you want to see what Avi and Mitch can do live ;-)
Would love to hear your reaction to "Gold". It doesn't matter to me whether a performance is a cover or original.
At this point, don't care if it's original or cover, though truly love the Run to You original. It's all beautiful ear candy to me, especially when Avi is featured or prominent.❤️
🙏🏼
Ptx Can't sleep love featuring Tink, you'll love it. Avi goes deeep!
Yes, you are correct.....Kirstin. Or Kirstie, her given name is Kirstin but she goes by Kirstie usually so they are interchangeable. So more like Cur, not Keer.
Well I listen to all they do whether it's cover or original
Her full name is Kirstin but her nickname is Kirstie like you might go by Jake vs. Jacob. As has been mentioned, "Kirstie like Thirsty" is how I have seen most people remember how to pronounce her nickname because Kirstin/Kirstie is less common than Kristin/Kristie for instance and understandably a little bit more difficult for some to remember. LOL
Avi was originally studying opera singing in college
u should see Pentatonix's Sing Off performances...
Avi's the star of this cover😍
Her name is Kirsten but she goes by Kirstie - like thirsty. 😊
Elvis never wrote a song in his life. He bought them from anonymous faceless songwriters. So did Sinatra, Crosby, Patsy Cline, etc. All the big singers bought their songs. Sometimes they'd sing really popular songs previously sung by other performers and do "their version", but even then chances were good the original singer didn't write it. Lennon and McCartney even started out singing covers before they started slipping in their own works.
Those that made their chops just writing were really frowned on if they tried to then go into singing. Willie Nelson was one of the few that got away with it and that's because he was such a favored personal friend as well as writer for some really big name singers.
These days not as many go in for only being only a writer. They want to sing what they write, and who can blame them. They get bigger bucks by far. The recording companies don't want to maintain a stable of writers coming up with music and lyrics for their top show ponies. It's up to the performer him/herself to find or write songs. If they're bad at it, and only produce one great song in their life, they just fade away and few people miss them because there's always another one waiting to step up.
Buying songs is still an important part of the music industry though. A LOT of singers will jokingly complain about being chased by writers throwing tapes at them, sliding them under hotel room doors, tossing them over the stall door in restrooms.
natural disaster live and official audio plssss...
They have 2 mikes in front and 2 boom mikes on either side.
Yes you said Kirsten correctly, the fact that Kirstie is also 2 syllables means its more of a nickname? I guess I equate it to calling someone named Vincent to Vinny..
Nice!
Audio sync issues.
Please react to BOYS WORLD’s Wingman
cool thanks
I find the covers much more interesting. :-)
JACOB- It's Kir (Ker) st(in) , Kir (Ker) st(ee) i.pinimg.com/originals/fe/63/b8/fe63b8dfc0a93e546ba7fc2178401e9b.jpg
