Dipikha, 10, and her sister Shona, 11, are hearing but their parents, Gohpi and Shalini, are deaf. The family is far from unusual - 9 in 10 children born to deaf parents are hearing.

The girls grew up learning sign language (which they refer to as their “bonus language”) and help their parents with everyday tasks like fielding food orders and answering phone calls. But when it comes to longer, deeper conversations, Gophi and Shalini don’t like to rely on the girls to be their interpreters.
“I can write, I can text. I cannot possibly rely on my daughters all the time to interpret and talk. They should have their own space,” Gohpi says.
As for teaching the children to speak from young, Shalini roped in her parents to help with that. The extended family’s love of performing also rubbed off on the girls who often sing and dance during school events.
“On concert days, Mama and Papa will always come. Now that I really recall, it's very heart touching that they always make an effort to always go for them,” says Shona.

love these two kid, im very impressed. they're 10 and 11 but they gave me adults vibe. good command of English, expressive and their thoughts were so much matured. I remembered back when I was around their age, I wasn't expressive and hide majority to myself, and very timid. and majority of my peers aren't expressive as well, asking them about things they usually don't tend to answers. I was so timid around that age I usually panic and have cold sweat. I only gained confidence to talk to strangers after I was 20.

I'm impressed with how confident and articulate both the girls are! For those who cannot understand, the girl was even speaking Mandarin at 5:36 to the hawker uncle. They're such a lovely family! Thank you for giving them a platform to speak and increasing the visibility of deaf community in the society. Every time I see deaf people on the media, it makes me want to learn sign language more.
Sucks that Singapore has degenerated into a country where you need to know Mandarin to even order food. So much for having English as our working language.
@@kafkacommercialstudios4124 We are Pernarakan chinese & we don't speak that language but make sure we get our food ordered. Why speak Mandarin for survival?? BS
This is such a heartwarming story.... I have friends whose parents are also CODA but they speak normally and they also teach us how to read hand signs too. They behave like anyone of us just that their parents loss their hearing, the girls are so lovely that it makes me go awwwww... They will be wonderful girls to the society and parents... THUMBS UP FOR THIS COVER STORY!!!!!

Very heartwarming story! Sometimes god takes away something you never expected losing but will replace you with something you never imagined could have. So happy for the parents to be blessed with the best kids ever. Credits to them for the excellent upbringing. 👍
I worked with Gophi at Hi! Theatre (the only theatre group for the deaf) years ago, which is now defunct. He was an actor in a few of our productions in Sgp n one international theatre festival in NZ. Glad to see that he, shalini n family are doing so well. For me it was a learning experience working with the hearing impaired performers n learning my basic sign language from them. 👍

Some people can be very rude and annoying towards others with disabilities. This family is just like any other family and they don't deserve to be treated just because both parents are different. Shame on those who mistreated this family with unwarranted remarks. Just look at both their daughters who are well brought 😍 up,which those bad-mouth gossipers out there have nothing good to compare with them.

This story is beautiful and heartwarming. I am impressed with children who is hearing to help deaf parents with sign language skills. Whole family is great because they helping together for challenging experience. I am hard hearing and see this give me some hope to doing same experience for my family one day 😊

My brother grew up CODA and CODF (Child Of Deaf Family). He is the only hearing one in the family. My twin sister/ me sign and speak at same time when we talk to him.
Sign language is amazing... Look at their home... People with disabilities are stronger... Look at their 2 kids and how they behave and speak...amazing...
so so happy and proud of this family!! they are way matured for their age as compared to other kids and it is very obvious that they are under good care and parenting. such a loving family tbh! and also kudos to their parents for being so strong and understanding.

I am very happy to see their daughters taking their opportunities to do sign languages without hesitations. This should be spoken out or being heard in this current world.
I am very annoyed of how people, for example hawker owners, treat them like they are invisible or ‘unheard of’. They do not have their patience when it comes to assisting them 😡.
I am a hearing-impaired person, born deaf, but I can speak and lip-read. I do very few basic sign language. God bless you!

I'm seeing ASL (American Sign Language) and theirs they are using. I use ASL too and I'm deaf myself.

I really wish they didn’t voice over the deaf parents :/ I love how the kid can speak some mandarin. Overall so sweet this documentary 😭
however I feel like the kids speech are somehow slightly impacted you can hear from their pronunciation.
don't they have free sign language interpreters in Singapore? I'm in Slovenia and the deaf here have them as much as they need.
It’s never rational for deaf parents to worry about their children learning to speak, or any parents raising children in a different language to worry about them learning the local one. Children learn the majority language with 100% certainty unless they are kept highly secluded from society in cult-type or other abuse situations. Studies show that children only need a couple of hours’ exposure a week to learn a language fluently.

At around the 6:00 mark, the girl in the red dress recounts an incident at an eatery, in which a staff member was extremely hostile and threatened to call the manager because the girl temporarily pulled down her mask to facilitate communication with her deaf parents (lip-reading).
If you know Singaporeans, you’ll know that this behaviour fits the profile, specifically the profile of the majority, to a T. The cultural hallmarks are rigidity, inflexibility, impatience, neuroticism, authoritarianism, and above all kaypohness, kiasuness, and kiasiness. The concept of assuming good faith and minding your own g-d business are woefully non-existent in this country. It reminds me of this widely published hate crime in 2021 in which a middle-aged Singaporean Indian aunty was physically assaulted and racially abused by a 30-year-old man from the majority for not wearing her mask while brisk walking outdoors. Even though it was a widely publicised fact that the government exempted joggers and brisk walkers from the mask mandate, he kicked her in the chest anyway.
The pandemic has made it abundantly clear that if you are in any way different, you risk random members of the public with no moral or legislative power over you attempting to either verbally or physically police you into their own version of compliance. Doesn’t matter what the law says. Pull down your mask to talk to your deaf parent? Some kaypoh will make it their personal mission to ruin your day.
This is why Australia, New Zealand, and Canada are vastly superior societies to Singapore, not just for disabled people to dwell in, but for ethnic minorities and really anyone with a conscience, with civility, and with respect for the privacy and individual agency of their fellow man. No one will assault you for the “crime” of not wearing a mask and no one will threaten to call the manager or the police or Big Brother for something so utterly banal. People actually leave you alone. Shocker.
Singapore is not all it’s cooked up to be.
