  • People want their organizations and communities to be places where everyone, regardless of background, can thrive but often struggle to turn this dream into reality. Diversity, equity, and inclusion leader and scholar Dr. Brianna Davis Johnson leverages her research and personal journey to make the case for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Leadership, a powerful strategy that can help organizations and communities of all kinds reach their full potential. Dr. Brianna Davis Johnson is a diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) leader, speaker, and facilitator dedicated to making organizations and communities places where everyone can thrive. She leads DEI efforts in colleges and universities of various sizes and types, nonprofit organizations, and local communities. As a scholar, her research examines how DEI initiatives are advanced within universities and how organizational policies and practices can hamper them, and she has published on various DEI topics in higher education. She holds a Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Austin, an M.S. from Northwestern University, and a B.A. from Washington University in St. Louis. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

Just hire the best people, nothing else matters.

Hire the best people from diverse and qualified candidate pools. There is a reason why Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 exists. There is a reason why the EEOC still exists. They exist because in the United States, there was a time not to long ago when the “best” was synonymous to a specific demographic. And that ideology is still baked into our systems and institutions. It is further exacerbated when hiring managers and HR staff are not actively interrogating their biases.

@@patoshannessy3775 Your comment exemplifies that it’s legacy continues. People are still being impacted by redlining. I will never “get over” the subjugation and dehumanization of human beings. Would you utter such a vile remark to the Native Americans? The mindset you demonstrate is the reason why history often repeats itself.

If you’ve noticed most businesses with DEI have lost its popularity. They’re not hiring the best workers anymore.
