  • The current state of affairs relative to social justice issues (race, gender, sexual identity and expression, religion, and socio-economic status) shows us that the need for diversity and inclusion in our society is greater than ever.
The diversity and inclusion concept of cultural humility is a current instrument being employed by institutions and organizations that seek to achieve cultural transformation. Juliana believes that through conscious consideration, we can be proactive in preparing for and adhering to the inevitable changes in society.
She will challenge us to think about our own personal biases and collectively learn to truly embrace, appreciate, and live communally with those who are different from us. Juliana Mosley, affectionately called Dr. J. by her students, has served the field of education for 20 years, with the last 18 being dedicated to higher education. Juliana seeks to educate and train people to engage in difficult dialog through cultural humility to make the unconscious conscious. She has presented at regional and national conferences, and institutions, providing training and development workshops in leadership transition, strategic planning, student development, and diversity (race, gender/sexual orientation, and religion). This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

Dr. Mosley, this is a powerful message. As a current BSW student, this reminds me of what is essential over all the years of scholarly text. I find what your talk delivers is something that needs to be made clear to have unity.

Please note that cultural competency is about building your awareness, gaining knowledge, and developing a wealth of skills. I believe we need both cultural humility and the awareness, knowledge, and skill-building that Dr. Derald Wing Sue and others discuss in cultural competency building. They both are ongoing processes that we need in doing this work. Thank you for your discussion of cultural humility.

This is terrific. It takes a LOT of audacity to think we can summarize and "know" in any one body/mind/head the cumulative effects across 1000s of cultures, of 1000 years+ of storytelling, of cultural nuance and interactions between cultures, and how that comes down to affect & inform the various cultures of the individual in front of us and then encapsulate that into a certificate on the wall. It takes a lot less humility to say "I don't know, please tell me." Namaste.
