Those not familiar with William Conrad or only familiar with his television role of _Canon,_ of which _Barnaby Jones_ was a spinoff, Conrad was one of the most prolific radio performers during the Radio Age (“Golden Age of Radio”), playing thousands of parts over 30 - 35 years, particularly that of the original Matt Dillion on _Gunsmoke,_ beginning in 1952 before it was adapted from radio to television in 1955, at which point James Arnes replaced him in the role. The show actually continued to be produced for radio until 1962, so the show was on both radio and television for seven years.
By the time of the last original episode of _Gunsmoke_ was broadcast on CBS Television, the role of Matt Dillon was either the longest-running or one of the longest-running characters and in the history of radio or television.
