    Apply Evostick to edge of the door and then install the edgeing strip. This will seal the chipboard from moisture. Kitchen fitters tip learned from installing stainless steel sinks into woodchip worktops. Very effective.

    Nice job and very clever tool. Would just like to add, that if you use a stanley knife and a straight edge to score the conti before sawing it helps to reduce the splintering effect. Have also heard using masking tape helps but never tried it. Good luck with the build mate!

    Another thought is to tape over the cutting area to help reduce the tear out (Doesn't always work) Or put scrap wood under the piece you are cutting to help reduce the chipping. Looking forward to seeing your finished van!

    Thank you , it looks easy to do . Very encouraging. I can't afford a small camper van over here in the U.S. But I still got my old 88' Toyota TRuck and I can build on that chassis .

    Hi Rick,When you cut out your door shape you need to use a special blade in your jigsaw and also set the jigsaw to NO tilt. If you look at the side of the jigsaw it usually has 3 settings, the one you want is the least aggressive one that way you will avoid tear out on both sides of the cut

    I needed something similar to trim some traffic light rings. I bolted a electric drill with a circular cutting tool to a board using blocks of wood, with disc cutter blade held by bolt and nuts, horizontal at cut height. Then fed each ring into the turning blade and rotated by hand. Cut hundreds this way. The tool above needs to be bolted vertical on a bench.

    Looks like a handy tool. I could have used something like this when I built a folding table a couple years back. I have plans to build a small teardrop trailer next year that can be pulled by my 4 cyl. car. I will be watching your upcoming video with much interest as I'm sure it will apply to my build. No hurry my friend. I'm sure your own time constraints are more than enough pressure.

    Cheers Ross, yes it's Maple - same as the other van.
    The problem is the actual filming - adds much time to the process and slows my thinking and production down - not ideal when I'm trying to run at this full-tilt to get it finished before I loose my sanity LOL!

    Rick have you ever considered buying an old caravan in good nick, then gutting it for all the bits you need then selling the carcass to car and van racers. Our family did this once and one old van serviced three others and we made money on it so it was a win win all round.

    Hi Rick, althought I know a bus is a very bigger thing than a van, I thought you might find some inspiration from a website I saw yesterday.
    Actually I can't put a direct link apparently (YT doesn't allow this), but look for roadyachting in google and you'll find it immediatly.
    Have a look, I think there are very interesting things in the pictures of the materials used etc.
    If you knew this website already , sorry for reposting.
    Have a nice day and I look forward to see the new van ready!

    I was thinking that you would clamp the drill into the vise and run the wood over the cutter. Never used on of them so I don't know if it would handle that. Nice job!

  • @WhiteDieselShed
    @WhiteDieselShed 11 років тому

    That trim does make a cheap bit of wood look tidy. Nice idea. Whats the trim called?
    I would possibly have mounted the drill to the bench or table and used it like a table router. Maybe?
    To stop the laminate chipping score the inner edge of the cut with a stanley blade. The professional table saws have 2 blades. The 1st blade of nips at the surface of the laminate and the 2nd actually does the cutting.
    Probably too late now. Pictures look like most of its done.
    Thanks.

    Rick, after shopping Class B Vans/Motorhomes here in the US,...then watching several of your videos,.....you have inspired me to build my own. A few questions,......I cant tell in any of your videos so far, if you can stand upright in your RV,...or if you have to constantly stoop/bend,....If you have to bend,....have you found this bothersome? Also, how do you hinge your doors to your cabinets? Thanks, Brian in Austin, TX.

    Drill attachment is very hard to find, gap in the market if there’s a big enough one which to me would be huge if advertised to the right people for example people doing diy self build van conversions. Opted to go for self adhesive U shaped edges, seems much easier anyone interested in the finish reply so I remember and I’ll give honest opinion when finished :)

    i think i would have put the drill in the vice and worked the wooden board around...the opposite of what you are actually doing...got to be easier to hold a board on a level plane whist rotating it rather than trying to guide a drill with a jig attached, And haveing to keep it perfectly level in two planes.....maybe worth a thought next time rick.....this is just my opinion, But i do quite a lot of diy and specially woodworking and repairs

  • @balkandancer

    Great video, I've just started looking into building my own RV so this is nice. I have a couple of questions about the edging you use. First, when hammering it into the groove does that create any stretching of the edging which in turn will sink creating a gap at the end? Second, again about possible edge shrinking due to cold temperatures. Have you experienced eight of these possibilities?

    • @rickvanman
      @rickvanman  6 років тому

      The edging material is pretty solid and doesn't stretch/shrink to the best of my knowledge. My biggest issue has been accidentally treading against the trim on the low-down doors and pulling the trim out of the groove. Will fix this on the next build with higher bottom doors. 😀

    The router gizmo was what? 125 pounds? Pretty good? Did I hear that correctly?
    Could have used a Dremel with a simple homemade gig or stop, or by hand razor knife with a stop and gauge attached, or how about a $5 hacksaw with a small tooth blade and placing a metal stop on both sides of the door with only the center of edge exposed for cutting; so many ways to not cost a penny. Your idea is not something I would advertise to a diyer who is trying to spend less not more.
    Your cupboard door using T-edging rubber strip is very good idea though. Thanks for the tip. ciao.
