  • My God And I
    Austris Whithol, 1971
    My God and I go in the field together;
    We walk and talk as good friends should and do;
    We clasp our hands, our voices ring with laughter;
    My God and I walk through the meadow's hue.
    We clasp our hands, our voices ring with laughter;
    My God and I walk through the meadow's hue.
    He tells me of the years that went before me
    When heavenly plans were made for me to be;
    When all was but a dream of dim conception ;
    To come to life, earth's verdant glory see.
    When all was but a dream of dim conception ;
    To come to life, earth's verdant glory see.
    My God and I will go for aye together,
    We'll walk and talk just as good friends do;
    This earth will pass, and with it common trifles,
    But God and I will go unendingly.
    This earth will pass, and with it common trifles,
    But God and I will go unendingly.

    This song is a powerful reflection of God's constant love, caring, protection and plans for us even before we were made. We are assured of His presence and closeness in our past, the present and through eternity. It brings me great blessings. Wonder song and harmoniously rendered.

    When I was in high school our choir director, Mr. L.G Jones, would always end every concert with "My God and I"

    I learned this song in 1954 as a member of my youth choir. I never forgot the first verse, have always sung it in my head.

    My Dad played a vinyl record of this song when I was very young, it was an album with a blue label, this was the first song on it. It was in poor condition back then but it sounded amazing and I have never found the record or a recording of the exact same. This one is the closest I have found. Vocal Congregational singing.

    This is my all time favorite song. We don't sing it at our congregation because the song leader doesn't know it. I'll be passing this along to him. Thank you so much for posting this.

      Brings back warm memories of the Hymn Singers, a men's Choir from 70 years ago at Plaza Presbyterian Church in Charlotte. My Daddy and Granddaddy sang with them.

    I really like this music, however I would be very interested in more information about the actual source of the melody. It sounds almost exactly like the folk song sung about 31 minutes into a very obscure Italian film about Soviet Russia filmed in 1942 called "We the Living" without authorization of the book author. Searching online for more information about the alleged composer of this hymn, Austris A. Whithol, it appears he copyrighted the hymn in 1935 and is buried in Glendale California but was born in Riga, Latvia in 24 Jan 1889. So it is conceivable that he consciously or unconsciously copied a Russian folk song for this hymn, unless we want think that the Italians somehow had access to this American's hymn and thought it sounded Russian enough to use in a movie they were making about the Soviet Union.
    The 'walking with a deity' lyrics are a bit strange to anyone not into the Christian religion, but that's another topic.
