  • In this video I do a short overview and comparison between ‘arguably’ 3 of the best rack mounted multitrack recorders ever made.
    Here’s a link to the review of Sansui’s WS-X1 that I mentioned in the video.

    This is a very good demo and I'm impressed with the audio quality you obtain from a simple cassette. The 234 has the more pleasing and punchy sound. You are a very talented musician and audio engineer. Cheers from Canada.

    I have here the TASCAM 238 S with Dolby S! This is much hier quality! I run a complete CD production 1996 - 1997 inkl. Track Nr. 8 as Synch-Track for a KAWAI Q80 Sequenzer for controlling the Keyboards and Mixing-Automation for the YAMAHA ProMix01. Works very well.

      Hands down correct it’s the way I would go too best bang for the bucks and as you will see on my channel I have a whole episode dedicated to VU METERS I’m a sucker. But I guess one take away and my opinion and this comes down to a more hi-fi orientated influence, but the same one we’re doing live sound, and the rest of it is never over complicate the signal chain so yes, maybe there’s not as many features and effects you can do with the basic one, but sometimes that’s really how it should be the artist the instrument, capturing it with a microphone and some amplification with the recording that’s all the way it was intended to be. Keep up the great stuff excellent channel.

    • @wehappyfewmusic
      @wehappyfewmusic  Місяць тому +1

      @@josefbuckland Excellent points, keeping the signal chain simple and focusing on the playing/sound is definitely a good way to go. I’ll head over and check out your video about VU meters too and thanks for the positive comments! 🙏🙌

    The 234 has a 70s Black Sabbath sound, and the 238 more an 80s indie vibe. The 238 can be more problematic and expensive to maintain, with the capstan motor problems. There is also a 238s with s type noise reduction. It's supposed to sound great, but the nr often fails, and there isn't an easy fix.

    • @wehappyfewmusic
      @wehappyfewmusic  Місяць тому +1

      That’s a good way of describing the sound of the Tascam’s! Yeah, the capstan motor is a weak link on the 238’s but luckily Tetrakan did a great job of sorting this one out for me. I’d love to hear a fully working Dolby s version (if there are any about🤞🏻).

      @@wehappyfewmusic keep your eyes peeled - I snagged one with a bent monitor pot for $150 USD a few years ago. They trump the MR6 imho. Both are great and the MX12 is a great companion for the MR6, but the MR66 is much more versatile and punchier/less “fuzzy” sounding in the highs 😉. Can’t wait for the next AAA record you do 🤘🏻

      @@wehappyfewmusic I guess the 8 channel ones were still good enough noise-wise that the 6 channel compromise didn't make much sense.
