2 years later, I bought this exact model used for 500$ USD and new AMD Drivers make it so powerful that it is pretty much at the same level as a RTX 4070. I also have 16GB VRAM to increase my setup lifespan. It is a beast for 1440p and can handle new games at 4K High settings :)
I strongly believe that having reviews for all these products before you are able to actually buy them is better, so at the time there is stock, people exactly know what to look for. Great video!
Not sure where you lads are located, I’m in Aus and by using a discord notification bot I’ve managed to secure myself and 3 friends 3080’s. These new cards aren’t readily available whenever consumers want them, but if you use the systems available I don’t feel it’s impossible.
@@inmypaants That's what I hear a lot and two friends building a computer (for the last 2 months!) are still waiting, in crisis, about the prices and STILL NOT USING THOSE SYSTEMS. So... the barrier to entry is real. That's sad... I'm thinking of using it myself just to show them it's possible (not that I want the cards anyways).

Respect for not flooding us with things that won't be available for months if not a year, but at the same time your channel is one respected enough that people will commonly look to it to see the performance of popular/common models. If you have turned down popular/common models I hope you won't do so in the future because eventually they'll be available, and when they are, your channel provides more thorough analysis than a lot of others.
Plus, it’s always nice to learn of the latest product even if it currently comes with frustration due to lack of availability.....Gigabyte, you know I want to purchase that monitor if only you would send it to retailers.

It's easy to complain now in the moment, but they have to have stuff lying around to test in the future. actually I dont think these in particular are hard to find, they're just nearly double the announced price at least here in Brazil R$8000 or about $1500 in USD (retail price)

TUF gaming is the budget brand from asus and is always more at the bottom end of the AIB price range. Your opinion on asus pricing doesn't change that. In fact the 3080 TUF gaming was one of the cheapest AIB models on release, while also being praised as having one of the best cooling solutions.
@@cheekibreeki9155 I just paid 1150 USD for a Red Devil 6800XT. The TUF gaming 6800 XT is about 1230 USD. I just sold a 6800 reference card for 1000 USD. 3080s are selling for 1300+ USD. Crazy times for sure.
We almost only have the top / halo tier products to look at. Only NVIDIA have released the 3060 ti which is more "mid range". And remember, that AMD's last generation in terms of performance was only premium-mid tier compared to NVIDIA.

I'm definitely getting a 6800xt I'm just not sure on what model to get. Nvidia's drivers suck on Linux so AMD is the obvious choice... Can't wait to drop in an AMD card. As always a very good video.
Can I ask why? I'm rocking an AMD gpu and cpu atm and even though I'm happy with the CPU, not so much with the GPU and AMD's radeon software. If you're going to be spending that type of money might as well get a 3080/3070TI(when it comes) and get all the awesome Nvidia software adjustments, raytracing, better drivers and of course DLSS 2.0
@@garn100 The open-source drivers for AMD gpus are built in to the kernel. Amd's drivers on Linux are worlds better than anything nvidia has released. Better than the proprietary ones on windows. Nvidia's open-source drivers are a pile of dog shit and should not be used. Second nvidias proprietary drivers cause some weird problems on occasion. Third nvidia has a stick up their ass and needs a special protocol for Wayland which makes it impossible to use on nvidia gpus while using the proprietary driver. I bought and sold the 6800 3x and then bought the 6800xt for 1000$. Worth every penny. Love the look and has a premium feel. You pay for what you want.
They won't. All indications points to the: 1. MSRP having been set without taking into account premium on shipping due to the global pandemic (which... fair. AMD & Nvidia shouldn't change their products cost to include unprecedented shipping issues, usually not included in price) 2. Nvidia MSRP being set too low due to their chips requiring some premium parts to have the associated cards run well AND with decent temps (that's 100% on them) 3. MSRP set before the tarrif expiration, components shortage & a general unwillingness from AIBs to take on the added cost to make it transparent to customers (which... again... Fair. It's a business) Supply will improve with time and thus, the issue of scalpers will temporarily solve itself. Mining will still affect us and the shipping industry "global pandemic edition" will normalize itself slowly. But those MSRP? They aren't relevant anymore. Add 100-200$/€ due to shipping.
The paper launch of all GPU's has been a blessing in disguise, great as miners have bought the dud designs. By the time cards are available for gamers the best of every category has been well reviewed.

Infact they are hurt as much as the gamer, because the higher prices makes it that much harder to recoup the costs. I find it genuinely useful to consumers that you mention the shortages and pricing issues in every GPU vid Steve. We shouldn't be letting these questionable tactics with pricing and overpromising about availability go lightly. From what I have heard, AMD implemented the upper clock speed limit because that is the limit of the architecture. If it goes higher apparently it experiences logic failure
There are also segmentation purposes, the 6900XT can go up to 3000 Mhz (if the cooling and silicon quality are good enough), since it's the same die there is no reason for the 6800XT and 6800 to not have a 3000 Mhz limit as well if that is the true wall.

Yep. Nvidia uses GDDR6X which is capable of 4 different states (or whatever 4 it was). AMD uses GDDR6 which is traditional video memory and which can have only 2 states (or whatever you call them.).

I really do appreciate this review, although I would have loved to see a comparison between this and the 3080 TUF/TUF OC. I know I can look at the differences between the FE boards and the indiivdual TUF model reviews and extrapolate but it would have been helpful to include in one vid. Also, there is much talk over pricing and MSRP, but given the amount of time that has gone since these original prices am I the only one that has forgotten what these high end cards should (have) retail(ed) at? Brutal. I just got one on Newegg today as part of a rip off bundle. But the card was $1499 CAD. Could have been worse. I sold an msrp 3060 ti for $1350, so it was a nice upgrade.
I happened to buy this one as my 6800xt to replace rtx 3070. This thing is so huge that I had to replace my pc case, too. But runs really cool and I managed to undervolt to 1020mv. Only consume around 220W to achieve 2350mhz stably under load.

It really depends on where you live I guess. I checked every hour on my favorite aggregator. Got a 3080 early for a good price. Just two weeks ago found a good offer on a 3090. Bought that as well. Need it for work. I game about an hour a week. 2600 euros in total. Return on investment in about 4--5 months. Worth it for my use case!

So the prices Are just right or maybe too low... so if manufacturers deside prices based on how we think (and behave)... the prices will go up more. Just bought a open box 6900XT TUF for $449 plus tax. Working great and it actually runs cooler than my 6700XT barely kicking in the fans around 56c game temp. This 6900XT actually runs around 80watts less in game than my 6700XT. That is due to the easier nature of running Battlefield 4 at a 142 frame cap. Without the cap on newer games it hits 274 watts. Wasn't expecting to save power using a 6900XT.
Thanks for doing the teardown part! I got this card in early January and it's been amazing. The only thing I haven't checked myself is how the build quality under the cooler is, because I'm afraid of breaking something lol
Way more expensive than I will pay and its out of stock anyway. I though Nvidia was bad with bait and switch pricing but this is absurd. 60% over the vapourware reference models is completely unacceptable. I've owned a lot of Asus and AMD boards and cards including current TUF X299 and ref 5700XT but I think that time has ended.
Yay, more nonsense to debunk. 1. There were no bait and switch, the prices arn't set in stone infact MSRP stands for manufacturer's suggested retail price. 2. There's no such thing as "60%" vaporware, nor is any of the gpu's actully vaporware. As vaporware is defined by never being cancelled or released... 3. Companies don't care about you, or loyalty, they are only after your money. So the fact that you've owned a couple of their products in the past makes no difference.

Recently I was able to buy a 6800 XT online fairly easily in Canada. Considering that I was trying to get my hands on a RTX 3080 since september that's not too bad! I don't know the availability in other regions, but it was WAY easier for me to get an AMD GPU than a NVIDIA one.

Knowing AMD's poor spacing of launches it would probably happen, could easily see them announcing a massive restock in July and then they come out with new GPUs in November.

I bought this model on 24/12/20 and it arrive on 02/01/2021, paid BRL 6.300 or USD 1,157.01 right now. Red Devil was near 1.300 USD. #Brazil I am really happy with it. Used to have a EVGA GTX 1080 which I sold to a friend.
Just paid $1,050 USD for an XFX 6800XT through Newegg. While it sucks to pay substantially more than what XFX said they were retailing this card at, I'm happy to get it because I know it isn't going to get any better any time soon.
If you look closely it’s clear to see that they have the PCB ready for the 2 fanconnect connectors that they always include on the ROG Strix models. There’s both solder points and text with ‘fan 1’ and ‘fan 2’ descriptions. I think it’s a killer feature and I wonder if it would be possible to solder on 2 fan connectors as it seems to be prepared for it. Then I can avoid paying the Strix premium for this feature :)
Price aside... I just happened to get my hands on this card today from a very popular retailer. They searched for the card and for some reason they had two of them laying around on their main storage area. So they ordered one for me and I’ll get it next week. I’m not lying when I say that I danced out of the store. Now I just need to mount it in my NR200P and hope that my dreams won’t get crushed by the size of this card. Yay me!
They're using stainless steel for the IO bracket to help prevent rust? I have many questions about the computers working in environments where the rusting of IO brackets is a worry.
Also 6800 XT are constantly available on newegg and local shops in Canada. There's literally no back-orders in stores. You can walk into a store and likely find one just sitting on a shelf.

I have the non-XT version and it's a freakin beast. NEVER seen this card go above 61 degrees, even when stress testing. Absolutely love it

This is more expensive than the Red Devil limited edition 6800XT here in Japan.
Same thing here in Southeast Asia, kinda weird seeing Red Devil (as a premium AIB) being cheaper than entry-level AIB from ASUS on the same card.

I'm definitely getting a 6800xt I'm just not sure on what model to get. Nvidia's drivers suck on Linux so AMD is the obvious choice... Can't wait to drop in an AMD card. As always a very good video.
Just remembered the time Linus Torvalds said "fuck you" to Nvidia because of how hard they are to work with.
Can I ask why? I'm rocking an AMD gpu and cpu atm and even though I'm happy with the CPU, not so much with the GPU and AMD's radeon software. If you're going to be spending that type of money might as well get a 3080/3070TI(when it comes) and get all the awesome Nvidia software adjustments, raytracing, better drivers and of course DLSS 2.0
@@garn100 The open-source drivers for AMD gpus are built in to the kernel. Amd's drivers on Linux are worlds better than anything nvidia has released. Better than the proprietary ones on windows.
Nvidia's open-source drivers are a pile of dog shit and should not be used. Second nvidias proprietary drivers cause some weird problems on occasion. Third nvidia has a stick up their ass and needs a special protocol for Wayland which makes it impossible to use on nvidia gpus while using the proprietary driver. Like Torvalds once said: F*ck you nvidia
Why not use the proprietary drivers for Linux? They're worlds better than nouveau.

I think this is somewhat probable
They won't. All indications points to the:
1. MSRP having been set without taking into account premium on shipping due to the global pandemic (which... fair. AMD & Nvidia shouldn't change their products cost to include unprecedented shipping issues, usually not included in price)
2. Nvidia MSRP being set too low due to their chips requiring some premium parts to have the associated cards run well AND with decent temps (that's 100% on them)
3. MSRP set before the tarrif expiration, components shortage & a general unwillingness from AIBs to take on the added cost to make it transparent to customers (which... again... Fair. It's a business)
Supply will improve with time and thus, the issue of scalpers will temporarily solve itself. Mining will still affect us and the shipping industry "global pandemic edition" will normalize itself slowly.
But those MSRP? They aren't relevant anymore. Add 100-200$/€ due to shipping.

You should add "hot box" testing. Lots of people/places have ambient temperatures approaching 30c, or even 40c.
The paper launch of all GPU's has been a blessing in disguise, great as miners have bought the dud designs. By the time cards are available for gamers the best of every category has been well reviewed.

I find it genuinely useful to consumers that you mention the shortages and pricing issues in every GPU vid Steve. We shouldn't be letting these questionable tactics with pricing and overpromising about availability go lightly. The sooner we forget about it and stop holding AMD/NVIDIA and vendors to their word the sooner they'll be right back at it the next time.

From what I have heard, AMD implemented the upper clock speed limit because that is the limit of the architecture. If it goes higher apparently it experiences logic failure
This was also the rumor before the release.
There are also segmentation purposes, the 6900XT can go up to 3000 Mhz (if the cooling and silicon quality are good enough), since it's the same die there is no reason for the 6800XT and 6800 to not have a 3000 Mhz limit as well if that is the true wall.

Yep. Nvidia uses GDDR6X which is capable of 4 different states (or whatever 4 it was). AMD uses GDDR6 which is traditional video memory and which can have only 2 states (or whatever you call them.).
You are correct sir, this is Asus' language taken from their site. "The ASUS TUF GAMING Radeon™ RX 6800 XT OC edition 16GB GDDR6 is a tenacious implementation of AMD RDNA. It is probably just a typo.
I really do appreciate this review, although I would have loved to see a comparison between this and the 3080 TUF/TUF OC. I know I can look at the differences between the FE boards and the indiivdual TUF model reviews and extrapolate but it would have been helpful to include in one vid. Also, there is much talk over pricing and MSRP, but given the amount of time that has gone since these original prices am I the only one that has forgotten what these high end cards should (have) retail(ed) at? It's also difficult to keep track when hearing aussie currency. Any chance for GBP and/or USD? Although I understand that may be better asked on a different channel... if anyone reading this knows the answer please let me know!

Brutal. I just got one on Newegg today as part of a rip off bundle. But the card was $1499 CAD. Could have been worse. I sold an msrp 3060 ti for $1350, so it was a nice upgrade.

I happened to buy this one as my 6800xt to replace rtx 3070. This thing is so huge that I had to replace my pc case, too. But runs really cool and I managed to undervolt to 1020mv. Only consume around 220W to achieve 2350mhz stably under load.

It really depends on where you live I guess. I checked every hour on my favorite aggregator. Got a 3080 early for a good price. Just two weeks ago found a good offer on a 3090. Bought that as well. Need it for work. I game about an hour a week.
2600 euros in total. Return on investment in about 4--5 months. Worth it for my use case!
will this fit in the Meshify C? you said 320 mm lengh and so does asus but newegg has 310mm listed. the meshify C has a max lengh of 315

Just bought a open box 6900XT TUF for $449 plus tax. Working great and it actually runs cooler than my 6700XT barely kicking in the fans around 56c game temp. This 6900XT actually runs around 80watts less in game than my 6700XT. That is due to the easier nature of running Battlefield 4 at a 142 frame cap. Without the cap on newer games it hits 274 watts. Wasn't expecting to save power using a 6900XT.
Thanks for doing the teardown part! I got this card in early January and it's been amazing. The only thing I haven't checked myself is how the build quality under the cooler is, because I'm afraid of breaking something lol
Way more expensive than I will pay and its out of stock anyway. I though Nvidia was bad with bait and switch pricing but this is absurd. 60% over the vapourware reference models is completely unacceptable. I've owned a lot of Asus and AMD boards and cards including current TUF X299 and ref 5700XT but I think that time has ended.

1. There were no bait and switch, the prices arn't set in stone infact MSRP stands for manufacturer's suggested retail price.
2. There's no such thing as "60%" vaporware, nor is any of the gpu's actully vaporware.
As vaporware is defined by never being cancelled or released...
3. Companies don't care about you, or loyalty, they are only after your money. So the fact that you've owned a couple of their products in the past makes no difference.

In Germany you can get about half of the Radeon products for prices starting at 950€ for a 6800, 1139€ for the 6800XT, 1499€ for the 6900XT.
Yeah RIGHT the RRP $1050 but the going price in stores in Australia is $1500.

Recently I was able to buy a 6800 XT online fairly easily in Canada. Considering that I was trying to get my hands on a RTX 3080 since september that's not too bad! I don't know the availability in other regions, but it was WAY easier for me to get an AMD GPU than a NVIDIA one.

If you look closely it’s clear to see that they have the PCB ready for the 2 fanconnect connectors that they always include on the ROG Strix models. There’s both solder points and text with ‘fan 1’ and ‘fan 2’ descriptions. I think it’s a killer feature and I wonder if it would be possible to solder on 2 fan connectors as it seems to be prepared for it. Then I can avoid paying the Strix premium for this feature :)
Price aside... I just happened to get my hands on this card today from a very popular retailer. They searched for the card and for some reason they had two of them laying around on their main storage area. So they ordered one for me and I’ll get it next week. I’m not lying when I say that I danced out of the store. Now I just need to mount it in my NR200P and hope that my dreams won’t get crushed by the size of this card. Yay me!

They're using stainless steel for the IO bracket to help prevent rust? I have many questions about the computers working in environments where the rusting of IO brackets is a worry.
Its very usefull if you end up using your graphics card as a boat anchor in a pinch
Also 6800 XT are constantly available on newegg and local shops in Canada. There's literally no back-orders in stores. You can walk into a store and likely find one just sitting on a shelf.
