"To help us make our way through these experiences, these important junctures in our lives, let me draw from another scriptural reference to Moses. It was given in the early days of this dispensation when revelation was needed, when a true course was being set and had to be continued.
Virtually everyone in the room knows the formula for revelation given in section 9 of the Doctrine and Covenants-you know, the verses about studying it out in your mind and the Lord promising to confirm or deny. What most of us don’t read in conjunction with this is the section that precedes it-section 8. In that revelation the Lord defined revelation:
I will tell you in your mind and in your heart, by the Holy Ghost, which shall come upon you and which shall dwell in your heart. [I love the combination there of both mind and heart. God will teach us in a reasonable way and in a revelatory way-mind and heart combined, by the Holy Ghost.]
Now, behold, this is the spirit of revelation; behold, this is the spirit by which Moses brought the children of Israel through the Red Sea on dry ground. [D&C 8:2-3; emphasis added]
Question: Why would the Lord use the example of crossing the Red Sea as the classic example of “the spirit of revelation”? Why didn’t he use the First Vision? Or the example from the book of Moses we just used? Or the vision of the brother of Jared? Well, he could have used any of these, but he didn’t. Here he had another purpose in mind.
Usually we think of revelation as information. Just open the books to us, Lord, like: What was the political significance of the Louisiana Purchase or the essence of the second law of thermodynamics? It is obvious that when you see those kinds of questions on a test paper, you need revelation. Someone said prayer will never be eliminated from the schools so long as there are final examinations. But aside from the fact that you probably aren’t going to get that kind of revelation-because in this Church we do not believe in ex nihilo creation, especially in exams-this is too narrow a concept of revelation. May I suggest how section 8 broadens our understanding of section 9, particularly in light of these “fights of affliction” that Paul spoke of and that I have been discussing.
First of all, revelation almost always comes in response to a question, usually an urgent question-not always, but usually. In that sense it does provide information, but it is urgently needed information, special information. Moses’ challenge was how to get himself and the children of Israel out of this horrible predicament they were in. There were chariots behind them, sand dunes on every side, and just a lot of water immediately ahead. He needed information all right-what to do-but it wasn’t a casual thing he was asking. In this case it was literally a matter of life and death.
You will need information, too, but in matters of great consequence it is not likely to come unless you want it urgently, faithfully, humbly. Moroni calls it seeking “with real intent” (Moroni 10:4). If you can seek that way, and stay in that mode, not much that the adversary can counter with will dissuade you from a righteous path. You can hang on, whatever the assault and affliction, because you have paid the price to-figuratively, at least-see the face of God and live.
Like Moses in his vision, there may come after the fact some competing doubts and some confusion, but they will pale when you measure them against the real thing. Remember the real thing. Remember how urgently you have needed help in earlier times and that you got it. The Red Sea will open to the honest seeker of revelation. The adversary does have power to hedge up the way, to marshal Pharaoh’s forces and dog our escape right to the water’s edge, but he can’t produce the real thing. He cannot conquer if we will it otherwise. “Exerting all [our] powers to call upon God,” the light will again come, the darkness will again retreat, the safety will again be sure. That is lesson number one about crossing the Red Sea, your Red Seas, by the spirit of revelation."- Jeffrey R. Holland

I'm so sorry for your loss. It is the most heart wrenching event. I've witnessed my children go through multiple miscarriages then the loss of their son at 2 weeks old. As a mother watching my son & daughter in law & as a grama my heart never hurt so bad. My non member husband contacted the missionaries for that area in Idaho to come give me a blessing. I was immediately comforted even though the pain has gone on for years. And I saw this act from my husband one of such love for me and my faith that I will never forget. I love u sister and I hope you are finding happiness.

How true this is. I have felt the Holy Ghost descend upon my head and cover me from head to toe. Shortly after, a heavy temptation came. I have tasted of the white fruit, or the fullness of the love of God fill my entire being. Shortly after massive leg spasms so terrible in pain, I cried to my heavenly father. Had the sacred experience of seeing my savior and redeemer, and have been in chronic pain, severe multiple spinal surgeries with the only relief in knowing the lord loves me unconditionally whether I have yelled in anger or wept for mercy.

I got fibromyalgia mere months after gaining my testimony. It left me with a choice as my body had little left: read the words of God or the words of man. Blessed, I chose God and through every trial. That choice has never let me down and I have been more than compensated scholastically, by brilliant friends and family, keeping me challenged to learn on my own, once the body stabilized years later.

Just one more day. Push on one day at a time. After coming to byui this semester, I feel abandoned and alone. My classes are stressing me out, I have to friends to talk with, I'm unsure of whether or not I'm in the right degree, and to top it all off I felt that God wasn't answering my prayers or even listening. I was talking to my mother about this the night before and woke up to her recommending this talk. It is a great talk that had everything that I needed to hear. I am still afraid of the days to come, but I will do my best to cast that fear aside and focus on the fact that the lord wants me here for a reason. That I will cling to. Just one more day. Push on one day at a time.

A perfect example of how the Lord can transform a regular man into someone with pure love and motives that's difficult to relate to. Can't relate to how pure these Apostles are. Simply can't. Wish I could.

this is such an amazing talk, the type of talk that gets you to think for once and not just listening for the sake of listening, but to start thinking of the message given in great depth, you feel your eyes being open to the reality of life, so I just don't understand why we have 184 thumbs down for this amazing apostle of the lord , could they possibly be the 184 Israelites who said to Moses "it would have been better for us to serve the Egyptians than to die in the wilderness"

I'm blessed to have the teachers be it men or women. These individuals are called of God, not by men alone to speak for our Heavenly Father.
Thank you! Forr it be that we have the Restoration of this blessed Church restablished here upon the earth today Revelation 14:6-7.
I'm also proud to have great leaders as we do, who speak with power, by the priest·hood au·thor·ity .
Without having them to use ca·denc or even inflection found in all their voices. They truly speak for Him.
Section 50 Of The Doctrine & Covenants says the following:
"Elders are to preach the gospel by the Spirit; 15-22, Both preachers and hearers need to be enlightened by the Spirit; 23-25, That which doth not edify is not of God; 26-28".
for they were all wrong” (JS-H 1:19). Eleven years later, after the Church was organized, the Lord testified that the Church is “the only true and living church upon the face of the whole earth” (D&C 1:30).
The gospel. The scriptures and latter-day prophets teach us the fullness of the gospel.
They teach us about the Savior, His Atonement, and the doctrines, ordinances, and covenants we need to return to Heavenly Father.
The priesthood. This authority to act in God’s name comes from the Lord. It is only given to worthy men in the Church by the laying on of hands by those who hold the priesthood. Ordinances, such as baptism and temple marriage, are valid in this life and in eternity only when performed by the priesthood.
Church organization. Today we have the same Church organization that the Lord set up in His day with apostles, prophets, patriarchs, missionaries, and so on (see A of F 1:6). The prophet has the authority to lead the kingdom of God on earth.
Only in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints can we receive the true teachings, essential ordinances, and opportunities to serve that help us return to Heavenly Father.
Because Heavenly Father loves His children wherever they are, He inspires them as well. Other churches have some, but not all, truth. But the Lord has only one true and living church.
One reason The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is a “living church” is that the living God reveals His will to living prophets and apostles.
They give us guidance suited to our times. Think of general conference or the proclamation on the family.
These inspired messages from the prophets remind us that we are members of a true and living church.
“This work is true. Never doubt it. God our Eternal Father lives. Jesus is our Redeemer, our Lord, the Son of the living God. Joseph was a prophet, the Book of Mormon is of divine origin, and this is God’s holy work in the earth.”-President Gordon B. Hinckley, “Closing Remarks,” Ensign, Nov. 2004, 105.

This topic is brought up often in the mission field. Our statements shouldn’t be offensive but need to be bold. I like to mention that churches in general are beneficial. Being continually led by Jesus Christ is what sets our church apart. We have the fulness of His gospel. This Church has the authority, doctrine, and ordinances necessary for us to return to Heavenly Father.Elder Nathan Le, 19, Colorado Colorado Springs Mission
We mean that this Church is the church that has the fulness of the gospel. Other churches have some correct principles but lack others that we have. We do not believe that we are better than members of other churches, but we do believe we have received all the truthfulness of the gospel of Jesus Christ.Kristi Dow, 16, La Verne First Ward, La Verne California Stake
Over time the pure teachings of Christ were changed in other churches to fit the desires of men. Although some truths remain, others have been lost. Ours is the only church that truly and fully reflects the will of the Lord as revealed to living latter-day prophets.Michael Arnell, 16, Chesterfield First Ward, St. Louis Missouri Stake
We mean that The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is the only church that Jesus Christ gave authority to. We are the only church that has the authority to baptize, bless, and receive doctrine from the Lord. No other church has the authority ours does.Carrie Davis, 15, Draper Sixth Ward, Sandy Utah Hidden Valley Stake
The Church is the same as it was in ancient times. It is the Church the Savior established in Bible and Book of Mormon times. It was established in these latter days by the Savior Himself through Joseph Smith. We also have the fulness of the gospel, and prophets are continually receiving revelation pertaining to the Church’s organization and the truths of the gospel, for the Lord has said He “will do nothing, until he revealeth his secret unto his servants the prophets” (JST, Amos 3:7).Michael Holman, 17, Covina Ward, Walnut California Stake
When we say that we are the only true church, it does not mean we are the only church with truth. Most religions around the world have part of the truth. The Jews, Christians, and Muslims accept parts of the Old Testament. Some Christian churches have some of the organization of the primitive Church. Most members of other churches are good people, and we should respect them and their choice of religion.Seth Lloyd, 18, Broomfield First Ward, Boulder Colorado Stake
Although other churches might have parts of the truth scattered throughout them, our church is the only church on the earth that contains the full truth. We are also the only church that has the right to officiate in the roles of the priesthood.Dianna Boren, 16, Westchester First Ward, Westchester New York Stake
When I share with people that I know that this is the only true church, I am letting them know that religion is not just a matter of preference-it is a matter of truth. The Lord Jesus Christ organized His Church when He was on the earth, and that same Church has been restored. This true Church holds the authority of God and is directed by revelation from Jesus Christ Himself.Sister Kristine Joy Iwamoto, 23, Philippines Quezon City Mission
We have things other religions don’t, such as the priesthood and Book of Mormon. We hold priesthood keys and have the only true prophet. We have been blessed to receive other doctrines through Joseph Smith.Ben Smith, 14, Vista Peaks Ward, Mesa Arizona Alta Mesa Stake
