I'm glad my friend in YSA showed me this video. I left the church 5 to 7 years ago, I left mostly because I compared myself to others in the church. Friends were going on missions. Everyone in my ward seemed to be doing a lot better than me. I felt like I was an alien visiting from another planet and just couldn't wait to go home. I came back on Mother's Day of 2024, and everything was going well until recently, I started to compare again. My friend in YSA, though, showed me this video, and I am glad he did. It brought me great insight.
Wow. I am a bit in shock right now at how comprehensibly this expresses something I have yearned to finally wrap my head around for years and years but kept coming up short of understanding. Thank you Bro. Haws for taking on your wrestle and helping me with mine. This has been added to my treasured collection of must hear talks and I am so very thankful to have found it today.
I love your comments and love you experienced this. As I have been turning my listening pleasures more toward things of the Lord; I too have had this same experience actually many times in the last 3 months. I have really needed this too!
J.B. - I was watching the “Don’t Miss This” video on UA-cam for this week’s “Come Follow Me” lesson when I saw your BYU Devotional at the top of the “Up Next” column, and although it was getting late I couldn’t pass it up. Your address was so timely for me because I fall into the comparison trap repeatedly. I am getting better at recognizing it and rejecting the thoughts as they occur, but there still seems to be a never-ending procession of comparisons on my mind. Thank you for your inspired presentation, it could not have been more timely for me. Things have come full circle - as a young missionary your dad taught Connie and myself 48 years ago. Your mom and dad took us through the temple when you were just a newborn - and now I get to learn from you with the same love and spirit that your dad had when he taught us. Thank you. Bill & Connie Kerr, Ohio
Brother Haws still a power house for good. You were one of my favorite seminary teachers in high school. So grateful I had the privilege to learn from you and still to this day. Loved your devotional.
What a wonderful talk. I would give anything to set at the lunch table and have those wonderful talks from you. To know how humble you are and how you want others to love the gospel as you do. You have a special place in my heart. I was so lucky to have worked with you for 3 years. Learned so much.
This is one of my favorite talks. It was so well delivered . I have listened to it several times and shared it even more. Thanks for helping be a better person.
One of my favorite talks. And I love Dr. Haws already. I feel his humility and genuine spirit. Thank you for this wonderful talk. And you were so awesome in Follow Him too. Thank you.
Son of Hooper... Inspired teachings! You mentioned Maxwell, who reminded us that the singular pronoun, I, has no knees to bend, while the plural, we, bends it's knees...
You did a wonderful job Brother Haws! I put this in a long list of devotional/general conference talks to refer back to. Thank you for this truly inspirational devotional and may God bless!
I'm so glad I listened to the prompting to find a BYU devotional speech this morning and found this one. I'm going to have to listen again, and perhaps again a third and many more times.
Listen to this at 0.75 speed so it sounds more normal. Also that story at the end really got to me. I feel the love that God has for each of us as we are His literal Family.
A beautiful, inspiring message. I can see that I have become too focused on myself - and this does not help me be the best I can be as an instrument in God’s hands and a blessing in the lives of others
This talk is exactly what I needed today. Such an inspiring reminder to me to stop comparing myself against others. I will never forget that quote: "the race is against sin, not each other."
What a beautiful talk. It was so well delivered by a man who exemplifies so many talents and yet has been able to be humble in so many great accomplishments. A talk well spoken and well lived.
been sharing this with friends all day. Thank you so much for putting in the time to ponder this and distill the issue into some really actionable thoughts :)
One of the funny things about comparisons is we usually compare the good stuff but we never compare the bad stuff like we may compare our wealth to someone who's richer but we don't want to compare our health to someone who's suffering from a deadly disease. Or at least something along those lines.
Can I just say that one of my greatest accomplishments in life is that I beat you in a spelling bee once? Not gloating, it’s just that we all knew you were so intelligent, and that was a point of pride for me in the moment. You murdered me in the next round. I spelled the stupidest word wrong (it was “standard” and I was so nervous I spelled it with 2 “d”s.) I don’t agree with you religiously, but I admire your intellect and I’m glad you’re doing so well.
I don't get why members think they are some how being humble if they turn down a talk or get out of the spotlight. Seems selfish, not humble! I'm so glad you did not deprive us of this talk because you were willing to be selfless! Edit: I realize the speaker didn't talk or mention it like it was some kind of brave action of humility, but a lot of members when they get up and say how they were thinking of going out of town and all that seem to give that impression. I feel like we really struggle with that at least in Utah. CS lewis wrote: "Do not imagine that if you meet a really humble man he will be what most people call “humble” nowadays: he will not be a sort of greasy, swarmy person, who is always telling you that, of course, he is nobody. Probably all you will think about him is that he seems a cheerful, intelligent chap who took a real interest in what you said to him. If you do dislike him it will be because you feel a little envious of anyone who seems to enjoy life so easily. He will not be thinking about humility: he will not be thinking about himself at all."
I heard this talk this morning on BYUtv and it came in handy for Sunday School because comparisons were mentioned often. It also reminded me of the Larry R. Lawrence talk from the October 2015 Conference, "What Lack I Yet?"
Yes comparisons of if we are making it to the Celestial Kingdom. Or married in the temple. Or if our kids went on a mission. Or if we are "keeping our covenants" Or if we attend enough church. Or if we are serving in the right calling. We grew up in a church that taught us to compare ourselves to the "Measuring stick" of the church. Maybe we should look at HOW the church teaches us to constantly compare ourselves to how we aren't "enough" within the process of making it to the Celestial Kingdom. This would be a good starting point. Forget comparing ourselves to others. Let's focus on what has hung over us since our baptismal day.
I'm glad my friend in YSA showed me this video.

Son of Hooper... Inspired teachings! You mentioned Maxwell, who reminded us that the singular pronoun, I, has no knees to bend, while the plural, we, bends it's knees...
This made a huge impact in my life! Thank you J.B.Haws! My first
BYU Devotional was in the Fall of 1977 - this one was the best yet!
"This is His brother" I love that !!! What a great talk.
This came at a time when I was praying that others might know that I love God because of the way I love them. Thank you!
This was amazing. I needed to hear this
You did a wonderful job Brother Haws! I put this in a long list of devotional/general conference talks to refer back to. Thank you for this truly inspirational devotional and may God bless!

Best seminary teacher Ever! So Grateful to have had your guidance in high school. And even more grateful as an adult. Thank You!💕

Thank you for accepting the invitation to speak. You have touched my heart.
What a beautiful talk, so glad you decided to go through with it. Perfect reminder!
I needed to hear this. Probably more than once. I'm so glad you spoke.
A beautiful, inspiring message. I can see that I have become too focused on myself - and this does not help me be the best I can be as an instrument in God’s hands and a blessing in the lives of others
I kept having to check that I wasn't listening to this on 1.5. I loved it all, beautiful!
This talk is exactly what I needed today. Such an inspiring reminder to me to stop comparing myself against others.
I will never forget that quote: "the race is against sin, not each other."
Watching this once is not enough!
This talk just showed up in my feed. Such a great talk. I see this is something my family needs to work on. Comparison is truly the thief of joy.
What a beautiful talk. It was so well delivered by a man who exemplifies so many talents and yet has been able to be humble in so many great accomplishments. A talk well spoken and well lived.
Thank you. Yes, I have been convicted by this talk. I want this true love of Christ to fill me completely.

What a great Speech
My dad always compares us to other ppl and just negative because we aren't millionaires lol so this talk was a breath of fresh air 💙
They don't come much better than JB Haws. What a great man and friend to all!

Great talk JB! I am blessed to be your colleague.
Thanks for this . . . I now have a better understanding.
The childlike celebration for others. So sweet 🥹

Exactly what I needed to hear
"Comparison is the death of joy." - Mark Twain
Watching at 0.75 speed is pretty good. He talks fast.
I had to this too 😅
Thank you 감사합니다
Love. Just love.
All I can say is... ❤❤❤❤❤❤ THANK YOU!
Thank you!!
I wonder if his grandma, Mrs. Haws, was my first grade teacher at Municipal Elementary in Roy, Utah.
Fantastic talk thanks
The video sound is pretty good, beyond my imagination

Privilege is real but it also can be earned
Privilege is not real! Everyone can be as successful as they strive to be.
How many likes does my comment have compared to everyone else?
