a CBC British Columbia (CBUT) station ID leads into the opening minutes of a 1986 "Friendly Giant" broadcast, featuring the legendary Bob Homme & Rod Coneybeare.
This show brings back innocent memories . I remember snuggling in my blanket , sitting there listening and ,being transported to another world of imagination. It is sad that the quality of children's entertainment has been diminished to commercial success. Shows like the friendly giant were humble in nature.
Oh I know...my Dad just today sent me a picture via messenger from this show. Him and I used to watch it together all the time...great show with even better memories... Vancouver BC 🇨🇦
I remember watching this show regularly as a child. One day, at age 5 in1981, the ending theme song brought me to tears and I could not explain why to my mother, who was fascinated by it. I just watched it again, 42 years later. I know why. It was so pure. It was Genuine.
I remember watching the show when I was little. Mom used to tell me that this was her favourite show when she was a little girl. That was back in 1991 when I was 5 and Mom was 36. My mom passed away six years ago due to a brain aneurism but the theme song early one morning always brings tears to my eyes. I love you and miss you everyday Mom. 😔
Likewise! I lost my Mom in 2010, Dad in 2015. They always made sure we kids watched wholesome, entertaining shows like this. Missing my parents dearly too. ⚘🇨🇦🙏😪💔🙏❤🌈
And me too! My dad passed away in 2004 and mom in 2011. I love and miss them both dearly. I grew up watching this, and Mr. Dress up and the Polka Dot Door. Such precious memories 🤗
Sorry for your loss. Grief, mourning, it is love that endures. Be assured though, no one dies, their body might perish, but they live on. Whether in heaven or hell, God will eventually allow everyone back on to the new earth to live in peace and love forever. (**except those who have knowingly worked with Satan against mankind, so the politicians/pharma/certain key families**).
Indeed! I'm from Windsor and worked at CBC-TV9 CBET in different departments. It's a special place to work! Many "firsts" began at that very TV station that included Bob Seger's first big break into music industry! 🥰🇨🇦🎵🇺🇲💞
I say that all the time, to friends and family. And the other perc was "Hockey Night in Canada" every Saturday night, with Don Cherry. Was like living in another world 🤣
Seeing this show again, reminded me (of course) of MY childhood in Maine. There were only a couple of TV channels on our TV in the mid-sixties, and since we lived close to the Canadian boarder of New Brunswick, this show was able to he seen. "Thanks" to all who made available to we kids, this Canadian show!
The great Bob Homme! I loved this show as a kid, growing up in Vancouver. I was more than a little annoyed with my parents, because Friendly lived in a castle and we were stuck in an ordinary house!
+Brothe hood BROKE The sad this is that this would be beyond some of todays kids comprehension !! I loved this show growing up & went to high school in the states (85-87). When I was home on breaks I would watch old times sake.
Once, in a teacher's workshop, I found myself seated next to someone who knew this show and song..we started singing it and got a sharp reprimand from the teacher...I finally understood the joy of disobedience in class...somethings have to be sung!!!
+PC Master Race Associate I love it! And only some of us would get the inference...at that point I would have started humming "Early One Morning", the theme song...thanks for sharing that...I might use it some day....
I love whistling for Jerome in crowds and seeing if there might be response ....very often there comes the next whistle, up one tone, and once and while you get a happy "giraffe!"
When I was a child my dad and I would watch this show together. Now that I am a father myself, I sit down with my 3 sons and my dad and we watch this show.
I use to watch this show, Mr. Dress-up and The Hilarious House of Frightenstein every day. Yes the kids shows today are dribble. Even the Canadian version of Sesame Street is crap now.
I'll never forget that line - "Look up....waaaaaaaay up." Honestly, out of nowhere it just popped in my head and I had to look up this video. Great show, good times.
This was part of my weekday shows when I was a kid along with Fred Penners Place, Mr. Dressup, Canadian Sesame Street, Polka Dot Door and Today's Special
Thank you for posting this! I liked the show from way back when. To this day after 40 years I catch myself whistling the tune. Thanks Robert and the rest of the cast and crew for making this show.
RIP Rod Coneybeare. He was Rusty & Gerome. But 89 is a good long time to be around. And as I posted 3 years ago sad that there are on kid shows like this today. Always loved TFG, MR Dressup, Cucumber & The Hilarious House Of Frightenenstein !!
For whatever reason, I just suddenly remembered my parents playing this show for me and my little brother. I’m a 2003 kid and I remember them always showing us shows from around their childhood in the 70s. My whole entire family is born and raised in Buffalo, so we’d always get all the Canadian channels too
I love how he made me feel like he was just talking to me, made me feel special. How he says he's going to hurry up and open the doors just for me loved it.
Afternoon naptime😂😂😂 I'm 58 yrs young and I loved watching this program as a child...and my son was introduced to it as well. Thank goodness for you tube to rekindle good memories 😊😊😊😊
This was my favourite children's show along with Mr. Green Jeans when I was just a young fellow. Loved the entry to this show every time. So sentimental.
Thanks. I remember watching this and it was a huge influence even though I am 50 now I always smile. Just to see someone this nice and kind as well as Mr Rogers. Kept me sympathic.
Bob Homme was that special person that perked my interest and love of music. Even as an older man now, when I hear the intro song, " Early One Morning " I get somewhat emotional.
This video evoked emotions in me of my childhood and how wonderful it was to be a little girl in British Columbia and to watch this show. I always wanted the rocking chair. Maybe this is where I get my love of miniatures. Friendly Giant was a lovely man and a great musician.
This was my favorite show. Never did forget that song with the drawbridge coming down and the rocking chair. Forgot about the big boot but memory came right back! ☺️
If you are ever in Kingston, Ontario, Canada visit The Pumphouse Museum (see link). The village set from the beginning of this show is on permanent display there. It was donated to the museum by Bob Homme's family on the condition that it not be stored away, but would always be on permanent display. www.kingstonpumphouse.ca/visit
I used to watch this on YTV all the time in the early 90s. No doubt they were re-runs, but even still, it was such a nice quality show that was so heartwarming. When my day at school was over (kindergarten was half days), I would go home and put on YTV and i would watch this show, The Waterville Gang, and Take Part. Man, I miss those days. Innocent times.
I have fond memories of this show. I always wanted to be in the rocking chair he set up by the fire. The impression it made on me is incredible because even as an adult i want to walk through that drawbridge and hang out with them.
Grew up watching this ❤, then when my niece was 3 started watching it with her sitting on my knee 😊 she’s like the little living room , and when friendly would whistle for Jerome 🦒 now that little girl is 39 🥲 lovingly memories I’ll never forget
I did have a fondness for this show as a kid, it's a shame it was cancelled the year I was born, so I heard of it first through reruns...still, better than nothing ♥ Heh, I actually thought he had a bit of a striking resemblance to my paternal grandpa Thanks for the memories, Friendly ♥♥
This show was one of my absolute favorites. It drew you in like we were really there. I always felt really sad as the music played at the close... I just did not want to say goodbye to Friendly.
I always appreciated that The Friendly Giant showed the printed pages of what he was reading to the children, as opposed to virtually any other kids show. That other, more well known, show simply taught children how to WATCH TV with a 60 minute stream of commercials for letters, numbers, colours, et cetera.
i never watched this show, it was a bit before me, having been born in '99. but whenever my parents would give me a bath when i was a very little kid, and they had to rinse my hair, they'd say "look up, look waaay up, and i'll call rusty". this is really cute. gives me Mr. Dressup Vibes.
I'm just going over a traditional English arrangement called "Early One Morning" on page 6 of my level 2 Royal Conservatory Classical Guitar book (2018 edition). This piece sounds so familiar. It reminds me of a television show I used to watch as a kid... which led me here. Very special memories!!!
This was my All Time Favorite Kids Show when I was little! It was better than Captain Kangaroo, Mr. Dress Up and Mr. Rodgers Neighborhood and Sesame Street. Detroit, Mi.
I still hum that song to myself sometimes but didn't know where it came from. If I missed the part with the little chairs I was so disappointed. Such a simple time.
This show brings back innocent memories . I remember snuggling in my blanket , sitting there listening and ,being transported to another world of imagination. I remember it like it was yesterday. Heck sometimes 80s seem like it was only yesterday even though it was yrs ago now.
everything in the US is money; Canada was more humble, more human; Floridian, ex-Montrealer
same here
I loved this show so much!
I bawled every time that drawbridge went back up and the moon came out.
I almost have to hold back tears when I look at this show. I will always continue to have a special love for this show.
It does bring a tear to your eye. My God! The incredible innocence of the time.
Agreed. That was one show
I seldom missed in early childhood!...
Oh I know...my Dad just today sent me a picture via messenger from this show. Him and I used to watch it together all the time...great show with even better memories... Vancouver BC 🇨🇦

What a great show when I was a kid! Detroit was so lucky that we got great Canadian shows like this through Channel 9 in Windsor.
Yep,the same also was possible in Toledo via cable as well. I used to watch this in the 80's.
Same in Buffalo, NY. It was so great. Even the commercials were more genteel.
Indeed! I'm from Windsor and worked at CBC-TV9 CBET in different departments.

"Thanks" to all who made available to we kids, this Canadian show!
Love that my children had the opportunity to grow up with this.
This takes me back to a simpler time when I had all the time in the world and nothing to worry about. Innocence is bliss.😇
I was 5 when I watched this wonderful program... Not speaking one single english word but still enjoying the mood and friendliness.
a wonderful memory, and a great escape from a toxic homelife and volatile childhood. watching the cow jumping over the moon still gives me goosebumps.
The great Bob Homme! I loved this show as a kid, growing up in Vancouver. I was more than a little annoyed with my parents, because Friendly lived in a castle and we were stuck in an ordinary house!
I'm still crying I want this show back on air
+Brothe hood BROKE The sad this is that this would be beyond some of todays kids comprehension !! I loved this show growing up & went to high school in the states (85-87). When I was home on breaks I would watch old times sake.

Lmao no you don't
Just sad that there are no kids shows like this today. A few times I've tried to watch todays kids shows & they are mind numbing dribble.
I agree.
Sad but true. wtf is the benefit of Sponge Bob....
Of course they are. We are ruled by cynical psychopaths who don't care about anything educational or of any redeeming quality.
Mark Bignell are thses the people who watched this show 😂
I use to watch this show, Mr. Dress-up and The Hilarious House of Frightenstein every day. Yes the kids shows today are dribble. Even the Canadian version of Sesame Street is crap now.

When I was a child I believed he WAS a giant!
Same here. I was just saying that in another post !!
❤️
We all did or at least hoped.
That's the magic of it; the willing suspension of disbelief and a desire to inhabit a world as shown to us here.
The North Remembers...
This was part of my weekday shows when I was a kid along with Fred Penners Place, Mr. Dressup, Canadian Sesame Street, Polka Dot Door and Today's Special
Polkaroo!
@@gigatronicdethalmost forgot Harrigan was also part of my childhood
For some reason i got this stuck in my head a few days ago and had to finally watch it again after 30+ years

If it helps, the song is titled "early one morning "
The Friendly Giant one of my all time fav kids shows

I loved this show. And still admire miniature furniture ❤❤❤
I remember. this show had me enthralled as a child.

A kid's life would be nothin without Channel 9!
I adored this show every day when little. Bless his heart
This video evoked emotions in me of my childhood and how wonderful it was to be a little girl in British Columbia and to watch this show.

This was my favorite show. Never did forget that song with the drawbridge coming down and the rocking chair. Forgot about the big boot but memory came right back! ☺️
Happy memories from my childhood! 😄
I grew up with this when it was still on
Friendly Giant and Mr Dressup were staples of my childhood years in the 60's along with cracker jacks and pixie sticks.

Glad Bob's family said that.
So much wholesomeness. ❣

LOVED this show growin up!!!!!!! They don't make em like this anymore!:(
Loved this when i was young. Watched it on CKLW out of Windsor, Ontario back in the 60's when I lived in Detroit.
I did have a fondness for this show as a kid, it's a shame it was cancelled the year I was born, so I heard of it first through reruns...still, better than nothing ♥

My Father’s Favourite TV Show when my dad was a Kid
I miss this show, thnx for the memories
Brings tears to my eyes - R.I.P., Bob. Long live Rusty and Jerome. Oh, please take me back...
"Oh, please take me back..."
Yeah. If only.
I just wanna escape this stupid world and sit on that rocking chair while the friendly giant speaks to me in that calm voice..
Why is it that we adults cry when we see TV from our childhood?
Its because being an adult sucks and being a child with all those innocent thoughts was pure.
I had to chuckle at Rusty, "Old things are old." Yes they are Rusty.
LOVED this show when I was a kid. ^_^
This show was one of my absolute favorites. It drew you in like we were really there. I always felt really sad as the music played at the close... I just did not want to say goodbye to Friendly.
When I was younger I used to be very hyper and when I watched this it would always calm me down
' "and for someone that likes to ROCK..." Friendly was the best!
Used to wake up early to catch this before school 😊 and of course Mr. Dressup
Great show growing up
I still have my autographed B&W picture of "The Friendly Giant"... :)

This show had classical music. It was great
This was by far my favourite show, followed by Mr. Dressup!
I loved this show as a kid. Along with polka-dot door and green forest

This resembles the Friendly Giant in Mr. Rogers neighborhood. But really, I love both shows still. Wonderful men. God rest them both 🙏🏼😔
I watched The Friendly Giant, Captain kangaroo, Johnny Jellybean, Mr. Dressup, Romper Room and the early days of Sesame Street.
OMG I haven't seen this in at least 30 years.
You're responsible, as to 'why' I love classical music!
I so, so wanted to sit by that fire as a little boy.
damn, I was actually into that and was a little sad when it stopped...
Watched this in late 60s. I had no idea it was on til the 80s. Probably reruns.
Oh the memories. :-)
+Aime Hutton The children today should be watching shows like we did, not the bad stuff they've got today
A bunch of the shows were put on DVD a few years back, and it still might turn up on television (on specialty channels) in some areas
how can 5 people dislike this
loved that show.
