I got to see Fred Penners Place - CBC Manitoba preserved the set for years in a studio in their building. It was a surprisingly small set and studio. This was about 20 years ago so I assume CBC has dismantled that set by now.
I saw Fred Penner in person once, when I was very young. We were on vacation travelling and happened to see him. I was so shy but got the courage to say hello. He got down on one knee and greeted me. He then looked down and noticed my shoe was untied. Unprompted, he quickly tied my shoe for me. Amazing guy and a legend. ❤
We travelled to Windsor to see him. First live performance for me, I think. I remember he threw a frisbee across the stage. At home, we would watch him in my grandma's living room with our snacks.
Those of us south of the Canadian border got to watch Fred Penner's Place on Nick Jr. when that was a new thing for Nickelodeon and I remember really enjoying it. Actually, we had quite a lot of shows on Nickelodeon back then that were filmed up north and they were all awesome. Thanks, Canada, for the intelligent children's programming I got to grow up watching.
Alan Rizkallah well that is very nice of you ..!!! And please don’t forget what started Nickelodeon in the USA ...!!!!! It was you can’t do this on television which was filmed in my home town of Ottawa Ontario. I was born in 1980 and sometimes it makes me feel very old when I think back to far lol
I just started remembering this show from my childhood, but couldn't remember the name, & it was BUGGING me. I literally Googled everything that I remember happening in the intro when I watched it as a child 30 years ago...AND HERE IT IS! OH MY GOD! I loved this show as a kid and thought this guy had the COOLEST secret hideout!!! Brings back memories when shows were wholesome and educational. I miss it.
Dude!! I remember being obsessed with this show as a kid in the late 80s!! Random this memory just popped up in my head. Oooh to be 5 years old in the good ole 80s again. Better times 😁🤙
Okay I'm in tears because I instantly feel 6 again.. still my dream to meet him one day. Also the Toronto Island Ferry at the beginning.. so many memories. Thanks Retro Ontario!! ❤
I still count my blessings growing up in Detroit. Not only did we get PBS tv with Spanish Sesame Street, but we also got beautiful children’s shows on CBC from across the river in Windsor like Under the umbrella tree, French Sesame Street, and of course…Fred Penner’s Place. I’m always grateful for growing up and being able to ‘join’ him along at his cool hideout in the woods with great music, etc. Thank you, Fred, for not only bringing joy to Canadian children, but American children, as well.
OMG this was the first show I watched as a 7-8 years old back in 1989 and I am seeing it after 22 years, it brings really nice memories, the theme of the show always sticks with you even after 23 years! Thanks for the upload!
One of my favorite shows as a kid. The order was this show, the elephant show, Mya My other Bee, The little bits, David The Gnome. This one was my most favorite of the block. I'll never forget the first time I heard the Cat came Back
Being 5 and liking this. I regret nothing. Fred Penner was a wholesome power that no longer exists as strongly. Oddly enough I had turned on the TV and noticed the cable was off, (it turns on to tvo) and he's there singing. First it was the cat came back, then home on the range. Still has charm. It's a pity my daughter is too young to retain this (almost 4 months) she'll see, hear and smile, but she won't recall it. I think finding these old gems and Mr. Dressup will add something lost to her generation.
I had the wonderful privilege of seeing Fred Penner live at my university a couple of years back. He's definitely gone gray but otherwise has hardly aged a day, and sounds exactly the same. Maybe children's television doesn't exist as strongly anymore, especially in Canada, but Fred himself is as great now as he's ever been.
Yeah, no one remembers this show when I ask, "guy crawls out of a log?" Thank science for youtube, I found Fred's hideout. Loved that back pack of his.
Same here. *NOBODY FREAKING REMEMBERS!!!* I was starting to think I'd just imagined this. Glad I finally found it though and that I know I'm not crazy.
Could not remember for the life of me the name of the show. I would just say a guy in his 30s goes through the woods and crawls through a log and comes out into a beautiful open area. Sings songs for kids and has puppet friends lol... Now i find him.. Yay!! So many memories.
Gee whiz, we really are all connected! "Dude crawls into & out of a log." is EXACTLY what I remembered & told people when I talked about it. Nobody remembered it...but y'all do! How freakin cool!!
"Have you ever been to a block party? That's where everyone gives you 5 bucks for a red cup, that you can fill with - well, nevermind. Let's sing a song!"
Me too! Lived 30 minutes from the Ontario border growing up, but now I live in the middle of the Pacific. And every time I go hiking and go crawling over or under fallen trees, this theme song pops into my head! So many good memories watching this show 🥰
For this to come out the year I was born (88) and for me to love it so much just makes it all the more cool that I got the opportunity to share a friendly beers with Fred at North Country Fair a few year back. As a 30 year old I can say that Fred made a huge impact in my life! Sometimes, you can meet your heroes.
Wow 😯. I didn’t know that! I was born near the end of (87) so not too much different. That’s awesome you got to meet him! 😎 I do think people like this have made a positive difference 🥹. Remember Mr. DressUp and Under the Umbrella Tree? I think one of these shows came after another so I’d at least hear the intro 🎶. Probably on PBS station. Lol, even that station reminds me of childhood 😂
I have been looking for YEARS for this show. I always remembered it when I was a kid, could never remember the name but I always remembered a man that had a secret hideout in the woods and he hopped over a fence to get there and he played a guitar. Tonight I finally found it. Brings back so many memories sitting on my grandmother’s floor early in the morning watching this waiting for Barney to come on.
Fred Penner's Place was so awesome! When I was a kid, I actually believed his secret tunnel led to this magical place in the Canadian woods somewhere! :-D
I realize something after listening to this now as an adult... I believe THIS is one form of what Bob Marley calls "..the songs of freedom". When Fred says, "keep the beat anyway you like", and "it doesn't matter what you wear as long as you are there", those are auto-suggestive conditionings that impressed our psyches in our formative years encouraging us to NOT conform but to simply accept diversity and to be ourselves. Amazing. No wonder Nirvana resonated with us once we hit our teens!
I remember this! admit forgot what was called but still remember the intro of him crawling into the secret log/tunnel and sitting in that area of his forest singing, this brings back LOTS of memories now, cant say how long I was trying to find this and remember exact what it was!
This music brings back so many childhood memories 😢, growing up in the Detroit area in the 90s this is what I watched cause we couldn't afford cable. 😢
Same! And now I live in the middle of the Pacific, where no one is familiar with this magical show. My Hawaii-born spouse watched Let’s Go Fishing as a kid; I guess that’s his version of Fred Penner’s Place! 😀
Growing up a little south of Buffalo we could get Canadian stations with the big 'ol roof antenna. I loved watching this show. When I got older I seriously thought I'd made it up since none of my friends knew what I was talking about!! So glad to find this so I can show them all I wasn't crazy!! I love Fred Penner!!!
It's funny how Fred Penner was not much older than your parents if you were an 80s kid..now he is a grandfather. Rock on Fred thanks for bringing a taste of Canada to the states.
I would have never looked for this stuff to bring me back ol memory lane. then, I had kids. now I love looking up this stuff and returning to a kid-if only for a moment or so. thanks Fred Penner!
So true! I wish I could warp my childhood into a neat little package so that my kids could experience all the great shows and cartoons we grew up with.
Watching all these old 80s/90s kids shows I used to love....but now on UA-cam, and seeing and hearing them for the first time in ages, made me realize.... No wonder I love vaporwave so much.
I have been trying to remember the name of this show for years...All I could remember was him crawling through the log. I Loved this show when I was younger.
Nickelodeon’s Nick Jr. used to air Fred Penner’s Place in the early 90s when I started watching Nickelodeon as a child! I didn’t watch this as often as some others, but when I did, I enjoyed Fred and his secret place.
I've been trying to remember the name of this show forever. Finally dug through the wikipedia of old Nick programming. All I could remember was the log and him playing acoustic guitar. Nostalgia overload for sure
I had a random memory from kindergarten in 1988 that brought me here today. This was on Nickelodeon in the daytime before Nick Jr. Now, I'm processing that the end of the theme song is "and your bird can sing" from the Beatles. Man, this was a great show.
But do you realize how many generations feel the same thing? The magic you felt was in part because you were a child when you watched these things. Kids are going to love the shows they have now, and when they're adults they're going to look back fondly just as we are doing now.
Fred Penner..The original Epic Beard Man~! What a nice man! He really contributed to Canadian society! I don't know anyone close to my age who doesn't remember him fondly. God Bless !
I remember watching this show and thinking to myself "This guy has the coolest secret hideout!"
Well, technically it wasn't a secret since WE knew about it... heh
the only thing I really remember about this show is how he crawled in and out of that log
agree
Christ....I was a kid dreaming of a my own hollow log lair.
I got to see Fred Penners Place - CBC Manitoba preserved the set for years in a studio in their building. It was a surprisingly small set and studio. This was about 20 years ago so I assume CBC has dismantled that set by now.

We travelled to Windsor to see him. First live performance for me, I think. I remember he threw a frisbee across the stage. At home, we would watch him in my grandma's living room with our snacks.
I saw him in concert in 1988. He's also a folk singer
This immediately makes feel like a five year old again. Amazing how a theme song can trigger so many feelings and memories.
same! i was always jealous of his hideout area with that cool log he crawled through
same here, instant tears as soon as the opening theme started.
Wow. The human mind is amazing. I haven't heard this intro in 30 years, but once I did, I knew every instrument note for note.
Whitecloud 94 same here. I only rember a guy crawling through a log in the woods. When I watched that now, i recognized the tune.
and the "Fred Penner's Place" voice/effect!
Me too
Me too
Such good times

as an American child raised on the first Nick Jr I second that. Red Green show was pretty funny too. Thanks eh!
Americans and Canadians are like cousins. Always fun to visit each other!
Like Sharon Lois and Bram’s Elephant Show!
i am shedding a tear watching this ......back when shows were wholesome entertainment
Back when life was innocent
Me too I’m sitting here crying. I miss those days.. I miss my grandmother who’s house we’d watch this at almost every day
So true you guys
@Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart Lol word. 😂
Agreed.
I just started remembering this show from my childhood, but couldn't remember the name, & it was BUGGING me. Saaaame! I’ve been searching for years😊
Same here lol I was trying to figure out the intro and googling any small detail I could remember and finally found it
Same here I just found it.. kept getting confused with fraggel rock 😂
Same! Just now found it when it popped into my head again randomly.
Dude!! I remember being obsessed with this show as a kid in the late 80s!! Random this memory just popped up in my head. Oooh to be 5 years old in the good ole 80s again. Better times 😁🤙
Amen brah

The internet is glorious, thank you for sharing this nostalgia with us 💚
This is one of the first shows I ever remember watching on PBS. I must have been 4 & I just loved it. Still the coolest hideout 🥰
Me too. 🥰
Being 5 and liking this. I regret nothing.
Fred Penner was a wholesome power that no longer exists as strongly.

lol "Especially in canada"... it doesnt exist in the states either
For me I feel like the best part of youtube is getting to watch videos like this! So much nostalgia at our fingertips 💕
Yeah, no one remembers this show when I ask, "guy crawls out of a log?" Thank science for youtube, I found Fred's hideout. Loved that back pack of his.

this exactly for me too.
Me Too! So happy I found this show again! Looking back now this guy was rad!
Could not remember for the life of me the name of the show. I would just say a guy in his 30s goes through the woods and crawls through a log and comes out into a beautiful open area. Sings songs for kids and has puppet friends lol... Now i find him.. Yay!! So many memories.

It literally has nothing to do with “blocking off the ends of the street” lol
It’s a street block. Lol oh Canada
Once in a while, on a clear summer day, Clevelanders could pull Canadian stations and watch programming. This was a classic.
I met Fred Penner. Played on the same stage as him actually. It was surreal.
Wow - must of been amazing
I miss these days, I watched this all the time. I remember watching this on Nick Jr. The memories.
There was sincerity and love in the simplicity of shows like this. Its sad that our kids wont be able to experience that.
When I'm exploring the woods I always think of this...
Me too! Lived 30 minutes from the Ontario border growing up, but now I live in the middle of the Pacific. And every time I go hiking and go crawling over or under fallen trees, this theme song pops into my head! So many good memories watching this show 🥰
3 notes into the intro and I'm bawling
I have to admit, I was beginning to well up a bit myself. I forgot just how much I had watched this show.
Made me tear up too....
I swear this is where my love for nature and the outdoors started 💚
Same! I love hiking because of this show! And every time I go hiking and crawl around fallen trees, the theme song pops into my head! 🥰

I remember watching this alot. My family didn’t have cable for many years and all I watched as a kid was CBC, Knowledge network and VU13
Wow this really brought back some deep seated memories. I’ve been trying to find this show for years but nobody knew what I was talking about lol
I thought I dreamed this show... wow.

lol
me too!!! ive been looking for this forever!
Same here. It popped up in a document recently and I freaked out. I have been trying to remember it for like 20 years and had just about given up.
Fred Penner's Place was so awesome! When I was a kid, I actually believed his secret tunnel led to this magical place in the Canadian woods somewhere! :-D

Fred Penner helped raise me!
Same here
... and a fine job he did
Gnarly bass tone, I love how a full band just immediately accompanies him
Fantastic show, thanks for the uploads
I love how that log can teleport you from a distant forest to a television studio.
I saw this guy at his live shows where he tours around--- he is truly talented and his show is still fun for adults!

It's funny how Fred Penner was not much older than your parents if you were an 80s kid..now he is a grandfather. Rock on Fred thanks for bringing a taste of Canada to the states.
This is the intro I remember, not the newer one. I'm too old. Thanks for uploading, good show for kids.
I would have never looked for this stuff to bring me back ol memory lane. then, I had kids. now I love looking up this stuff and returning to a kid-if only for a moment or so. thanks Fred Penner!
Agh, I haven't seen this show in over 30 years! I still remember that mouth harp music and the backpack crawling through the hollow log.
I'm from Edmonton, Alberta and I loved Fred Penners Place (amongst many other kids shows).
Used to watch this as a child; seeing it years laters awakens memories I never thought I still had.
So true! I wish I could warp my childhood into a neat little package so that my kids could experience all the great shows and cartoons we grew up with.
Been trying to find this forever, all I could remember about this show from my childhood was someone climbing through the log.
Wow, memory flashback overload!
This show was a huge part of my childhood :)
Wow.. I haven't seen this since I was about 5 or 6 . Over 30 years ago. You never forget a good time .
Thank you Fred Penner for being there. You definitely helped me escape through song and dance.
Wow I remember this. 1988 huh, I was like 6 then. Damn I'm old lol.
David Dupree yep. me too.
+David Dupree i remember his intro very clearly. i'll never forget the sound of those springs
Me three!!! 😀
I was 12.

Watching all these old 80s/90s kids shows I used to love....but now on UA-cam, and seeing and hearing them for the first time in ages, made me realize....
No wonder I love vaporwave so much.
I remember watching this show as a kid. Crazy blast from the past
Most epic 5 minutes of nostalgia ever.
Even as a kid I wondered how he the hell he changed into different clothes in that log every day.
meee tooo
It’s the innocence of being a child - I loved this show
Me too
I have been trying to remember the name of this show for years...All I could remember was him crawling through the log. I Loved this show when I was younger.
One of the best kids shows EVER
He really nails this song.
Nickelodeon’s Nick Jr. used to air Fred Penner’s Place in the early 90s when I started watching Nickelodeon as a child! I didn’t watch this as often as some others, but when I did, I enjoyed Fred and his secret place.
This was and always will be my favorite show!!
David Moore CBC Fred Penner's Place
This man is a legend!
i hope when I have kids, they have something at least half as good as this to watch on tv.
can anyone else smell the room they watched this in? of see the actual TV, Carpet, and walls?
Our den had wood paneling, and Kermit-green shag carpet. The tv I watched this on had a faux wood grain on it 😅
Yessssss! Too funny but so true!
We had an old floor model TV and a big dark blue L shaped double couch.
@@Emiliapocalypse ditto! My parents old school tv was the same. Tv incased in a big wood grained box. Thing weighed a fucking ton. Lol
@@rastadpl it looks like we all share very similar memories... pretty cool
I’ve spent decades looking for this!!
I remember the intro very well from the early 90s. Been looking for what the show was now, thanks to some help, I found it!
I FINALLY FOUND IT. OMG. This shit has been haunting me YEARS!! I knew I wasn't trippin'. IT'S REAL!!!
I LOVED this show when I was a kid. It was in the daily lineup. Memories… 😢
Took me a while to find this show again. This is a magical moment.
I'm 14 and when I was little I used to watch the VHS of Fred Penner's place and I loved it. I listened to his music all the time.
I watched this as a kid in the morning and it had a peaceful psychological impact on me. He was like Fred Rodgers plus Bob Ross.
This is wonderful. I love Fred.
Loved this show as a kid! Fred was probably one of my earliest exposures to guitar.
This is the intro I was looking for! There's another version on youtube but this one is the one I remember. that sound
I've been trying to remember the name of this show forever. Finally dug through the wikipedia of old Nick programming. All I could remember was the log and him playing acoustic guitar. Nostalgia overload for sure
I remember dancing along to this....ahh sweet childhood 🥹
I grew up in Pennsylvania and the same thing. Canada was about to take us over until around '94.
aww my childhood show. wow i havent seen this in 20 years.
I had a random memory from kindergarten in 1988 that brought me here today. This was on Nickelodeon in the daytime before Nick Jr. Now, I'm processing that the end of the theme song is "and your bird can sing" from the Beatles. Man, this was a great show.
I never realized how much stuff I watched as a kid was Canadian. I grew up in Michigan, so I guess we we're close enough to Canada to get this stuff.
Yep, just found this. I cant believe I completely forgotten about this show. I used to love this.
I loved this show when I was kid, so many good memories and a time when life was so good 😊
Childhood themes that never left my brain Fred Penner’s Place and Reading Rainbow ❤
Man, this brings back memories. I used to watch this every day when I was little. :)
I think this guy's into the good patch. lol
trust me Fred Penner isn't tone deaf. before he became a children's entertainer he was a trained music therapist
I've been looking for this shit 4 years no one ever knew what in the hell I was talking about wow I'm relieved
We need Fred Penner now more than ever
But do you realize how many generations feel the same thing? The magic you felt was in part because you were a child when you watched these things. Kids are going to love the shows they have now, and when they're adults they're going to look back fondly just as we are doing now.
Omg... I just thought of the name Fred Penner while looking up old tv shows I used to watch... holy crap! I watched a lot of television as a kid...
I have never heard of this show until now, but it put a smile on my face.
The intro was amazing, it felt like I went on a journey as a kid.
This was my favourite show as a kid used to watch him every chance I got and the tv I had you had to turn a knob
1984 here. Hands down my favourite show as a toddler.
This brings me back to a wholesome past. ☺️
What a Badass! Fred Penner is a stud! I am now a guitar player thanks to that guy!!!!
I haven't seen this in 25-years. Incredible!!
Fred Penner..The original Epic Beard Man~! What a nice man! He really contributed to Canadian society! I don't know anyone close to my age who doesn't remember him fondly. God Bless !
Whoa. An ad for The Nature of Things, then Hodge Podge Lodge, then Fred Penner's Place?? Amazing!!
