I eventually went back and watched all the performances from Season 3 of the Sing Off because I was curious about the competition Pentatonix had. There were several strong groups, as I expected, but it seemed to me that PTX was most consistent about incorporating the critiques of the judges as well as in giving strong performances. The criticism they received was usually less negative than that received by the other groups because their performances were so good. I suspect that Shawn was the first Pentaholic. It’s a pleasure to hear someone with a strong musical background react to their music. It helps me appreciate their talent even more.
I did the same. I wanted to see how good the other group were. The fact the 5 voices beat out groups of 15 to 20 just shows how good PTX is. The other groups were very very good. I enjoyed them all.
Love the way you are actually going about your reactions and working on their "Origin" story then going to the back catalog. I CANNOT WAIT to see you react to performances 5, 7,10 & 12! They are ICONIC Pentatonix and what really set them apart from their competition. This performance (IMHO) was when they started to really show what they were capable of and you will see a steady "One Up" on each performance ESP the ones I mentioned above. I'm REALLY excited to know I won't have to wait too long to see them all! Get ready for #5 (and specifically my fave Avi) show what they can do. :-)
I totally agree with you on this. Considering that the audition for this show was their first ever performance together, I think that during the first three performances they were still finding themselves as a group. To me this is their first really good PTX worthy performance. And, it just gets better and better from here on. There are some truly mind blowing performances ahead, like the next one. So don't take too long.
After this performance everyone knew pentatonix were the biggest competition and it just went up from there can't wait to see your reaction to 5,7,10,and 12 they are the best in my opinion
Speaking of origin stories... This performance clinched it for me. At the time it aired, I was rooting for another group, Afro Blue (I am an old-school, Gen-X vocal jazz singer, and they were more my style), but Pentatonix instantly became a close 2nd place favorite, then after Afro Blue was robbed (robbed!) of their spot in the finals, I happily threw my support behind Pentatonix and have been a die-hard Pentaholic ever since.
The first 3 performances, while I liked them, are them still trying to find their sound. With this performance really starts the next decade of nothing but awesome!! Have you ever reacted to the A Capella group Home Free?!! If not, you should really check them out!! Half their songs are country music, the other half are pop and rock music, like Pentatonix. But even though most of their fans don't like country music, they like Home Free's versions of those country songs!! To start, check out Home Free's cover of Blue Ain't Your Color.

When I saw this episode I was in awwh. I was on my feet and cheering in my living room. I couldn't believe what I was hearing. Being able to relive that with you was a treat. Great reaction.
I watched this season of the sing off when it was aired on tv, and rooted for Pentatonix from their first performance all the way to the win. And this was my favorite of their performances on this show.
They were already good from the first but this is where you see them really gel as a group. They are just improving by leaps and bounds from here on. Enjoy the ride.
Great reaction, again! They are getting more comfortable as a group, and experimenting more. One of my favorite bits in this video is during the bridge, where Kevin does this weird upward trill. It's really quick and you were chuckling when he did it, but I hope you have a chance to go back and check it out. See you on the next one - which is amazing!
Ben Folds doesn't get enough credit for how good a judge he was. I love your reaction too because I think in your reactions you take what he says to heart too, no other reactor I've seen does that, thank you!
Someday when you have time--I'd love to see you dip into some of the performances by other groups. The Dartmouth Aires are really spectacular, and had an extremely dynamic central singer, but the competition that impressed me most came from Delilah (all female) and Afro Blue. Urban Method were excellent, Vocal Point was a lot of fun, and North Shore ("the old guys") was a sentimental favorite of mine. True, PTX showed their class from the start; I can imagine lots of hearts sinking every time they performed. "We don't have a chance!" and "How can we compete with that?" must have been muttered or wailed by a lot of talented singers. Thanks for taking us, once more, on this journey! We never get tired of this rabbit hole; I've lost many a night of sleep because I decided to watch "just a couple" of the PTX Sing-Off performances. But watching it through the eyes of a reactor is special, because it's the next best thing to hearing it for the first time.
I like the first one, but this is the start of Ptx sound, I like how we could see Mitch and Kirstin doing what they do in Ptx some of the took the lead and the other doing the harmony, in this case Mitch sing and Kirstin was doing the background harmony to him, is one of the things that I like the most of Pentatonix how they play with the similarities in their voices.
avi was dating one the girls in sonos at that time so that is who avi is blowing kisses at when they mention sonos. the only relationship we've ever heard of for avi. i hope its just that he is as good as kevin at keeping it private seeing as surprise kevin is engaged to be married and the public never knew there was a relationship at all lol
