      GammaGamer I never got any so called lessons till recently after I already was teaching others. I’ve had I think 3 Skype sessions with Tomo since the quarantine. It’s up to you, I wouldn’t be where I am now with out being self taught. I just spent hours watching concerts over and over and being obsessed and it all started with songs I wanted to learn. I think there’s a value that comes with not being in the music school line that you get with learning on your own. Too many players I know that all sound like each other and don’t really sound like musicians more so like robots cause they play the same stuff you learn from Berklee and places known for there music programs. Theory is a good thing to know, but when it’s too much by the book, and it’s get to a point where it’s not really music and your just playing scales and generic runs.

    I have to say as a musician, John Mayer can play guitar period. Everybody seems to get caught up on musicians sounding like this artist or that artist. Bottom line is blues is based on pentatonic scales, its up to the artist on how he is going to play them. Give the man the respect that he made it and is good in his own right. I think anyone who wants to talk sh$t should post their comments with a youtube link of their skills on the guitar and show us how its done if they feel like criticizin

      he doesnt suck, hes just nothing special at guitar playing. He would be a nobody if it werent for all the girls who go to his concerts for his looks or whatever. People put him with all the legends just because he's famous, when hes basically a SRV imitator with a more pop orientated style so as he can make more money.

    • @nice7444
      @nice7444 5 років тому +1

      btm wtfb Dude, people don’t put him with the legends cause he’s famous. Eric Clapton said that he’s a master himself, and honestly I believe that he has the greatest versatility. If you actually see more of his guitar playing with the dead and company, you can see that no where is John Mayer playing like srv at all. Just because he uses a couple licks no where makes him a srv imitator. Check out neon, it has a jazzy solo, all original playing that John Mayer created. His right handed technique is also very unique (the way he uses it). Yes I know some people uses it too but the way John Mayer uses it is crazy. John Mayer also used a slapping technique that you don’t really see srv using it. Check out Magnolia with Eric Clapton and John Mayer, John Mayer was playing a really soulful David Gilmour feel. The same with I guess I just feel like, very Derek trucks feel and David Gilmour, and a little bit of Mark Knopfler. When it comes to the blues, srv is much better, but versatility and technique, I’m sorry but you have to hand it to John Mayer. I doubt srv would get anywhere close to neon. But hey, two DIFFERENT guitarist, you can’t really compare.

    John is such a underrated guitar player! The problem with most people who listen to Lady Gaga and Nicki Minaj for a example they are to ignorant to look at John Mayer and call him one of the best guitar players ever. There's hundreds of guitarists all over the world who are better than John Mayer in this style, it's just that he has the whole package..Great Songwriter, Charismatic, young, stylish, good looking & funny.. & you've got to be lucky to some extent now to make it as a musician in America, so he's the perfect candidate to be a commercial music star. He could easily have been making a living as a session guy or in some band but the fact is he's a Legend simply because he's an outstanding guitarist.

He totally won me over, and since then, I've sought out his blues music & quickly realized that he is truly a world class guitarist. But he can't hold a candle to SRV. Aside from both Jimi & SRV being groundbreakers w/regard to their styles/talent/etc., even JM has said that he can only play like SRV for about 30 seconds before his forearm goes dead.

      @@theyrinthewalls not 500k. Realistically 250 to 3 lmao. Honestly you can achieve something inspired by this with a 64 vibroverb and a Silver Sterling in it along with any almost any line of two rock, but it will only get you so far. Of course Bradshaw rigs along with Alessandro cabs, bricasti reverb, and Pete Cornish NG2 and that other delay he makes are going to really take it to another level. The thing is nobody is going to get tone like this. I would call myself a better then average guitar player like many others out there that been blues fans for years and been gigging for a long time but even the people that got the talent aren’t going to sound like this. It’s the same sort of thing with any other great guitar legends so much dynamics and little nuances comes from there hands and playing. Just like there is a lot of people out there that can play Stevie stuff really well but not capture the feel. Phillip Sayce being the number one that comes to mind that really seems to go after that 83 srv. That’s what makes all these players like SRV, Mayer, Clapton, and more recently Bonamassa, is they just have this feel that doesn’t sound like anyone else. That no can fully mimic, you may be able to capture the essence but it only goes so far.

    yes and i think mayer agrees with you, he even said it in an interview. he said that he and other guitarists can reach that level of intensity that hendrix and srv had but after 30 seconds his hand would cramp up.

    and the fact that he could get a bunch of teenage girls and 50 year old men to go to the same concert is something SRV or Jimi or whoever else they put on up on a throne could never do. they have to appreciate that

    Man, he's just an amazing guitarist! I love his playing, even if it has a SRV/jimi style (which in my opinion, when mixed with his personal style, it gets even better)!!! But most people there (in the show) are there for his own songs, his pop stuff. Most people there, I believe, are not into bluesy/rock stuff... Which raises my question: how do they handle all his crazy playing? I mean, he played for about 15 minutes nonstop! If I didn't like this stuff, I wouldn't make it through the show!

    John pays tribute to his heros but he also does stuff they could never do (e.g. his songwriting) and in that sense is just as much as a pioneer as jimi, stevie and eric who took what came before and did something new.
