Israel’s missile defence systems work like magic - but could end up making it less secure, not more

  • Ever since Nazi Germany unleashed its Fritz-X guided weapon against the British navy in 1943, nations have sought technological means to defeat missile attacks. The challenge accelerated during the Cold War. Even though missile defence technology can now protect advanced nations from an array of threats, they involve huge costs and enable political leaders to dither on tough decisions.

Well said...its very important to not view secuity too simplistically...and equally importantly its as imperative to be wise about security as it is to be technologically adept.

One should do a cost benefit analysis in these missile attacks. If a million dollar missile is needed to shoot at 10000 dollar drone, it is not a good engineering solution

35:05 "to be able to compete with the United States' gargantuan industrial production resources"
That's a very Anglo-American point of of view. Mr. Praveen Swami might not be aware of the fact that Nazi Germany was not defeated by the Americans and the Brits. It was a collective effort, but most of the job was done by the Soviets. About 75% or even 80% of the German army perished fighting the Soviets in the east. The Americans and the Brits did play a role in defeating Hitler, but it was rather small, by comparison.

You made a mistake at 8:17, the Red Army (the Soviets) had the Germans on the run by 1944 summer and also made serious damage to German industrial capacity by repeated bombings. So the Red Army defeated and had overrun the Germans(the Nazis) so the uselessness of the anti-missile defence of the Brits against the V2 rockets.

Explained well. However, developing any system to counter supersonic and hypersonic missiles isn't easy. So ballistic missile's importance will go down in future. The average human reaction time is a quarter of a second (250 milliseconds). So it is impossible to protect any building or installation if it is 300 Km away from a missile launching pad.

Too much cock and bull story spanning from one continent to other from the past hardly makes any sense to the thumbnail

There are multiple videos of Hezballah's Burkan missiles hitting IDF bases. So I wonder what is wrong with iron dome in these situations.

There is no end to this endless game. It’s, and will continue to be war till both sides bleed each other white. Because, human natural tendency is towards lose-lose and not win-win strategy, ask any Game Theory enthusiast.

    1. A detailed and thoroughly well prepared video on origins and developments in ABM technologies by Pravin. This is of course, a routine matter for Pravin!!!. And as usual, the title of the video is misleading and largely irrelevant!! 2. As a broad level observation, while ABM technologies may always fall short of requirements and hence, one needs to ensure that missiles are never allowed to be launched in the first instance. This means eliminate, overtly or covertly, capabilities of rogue countries and actors once for all and for ever. It was finally USA which allowed Pakistan and North Korea to become nuclear capable!! USA could have nipped their efforts in the bud at the right time!! Similarly, unnecessary ventures in Middle East and Afghanistan would not have led to rise of Islamic terrorist organizations.

rather biased considering India faces serious adversaries of Pakistan and China. His sniping at Israel out of all historical context diminishes his lecture. It all was conducted before Israel 's successful attack on Iran. He will in another lecture have to explain how Israel has overcome Russian made radar and seemingly made their mainstay defence of S300 very ineffective. This will cause Iran, & proxies, Russia, Nort Korea & PRC much worries to say the least

    Good video
    Cost :- one must include
    a) Exports of Iron Dome ( maybe a few billion dollars)
    b) Strategic muscle (hard to value : it gives Israel a fearlessness against Iran or anyone, how does one price that ? Certainly billions)
    c) Fearlessness (again) against threats : israel is beyond intimidation (worth billions)
(By contrast Iran is scared stiff)
