I'd say all the next big thing talk came way before 2022. I know it was his best year but by that point he had already failed to live up to the hype from a few years ago. I remember 2019 was when people began predicting great things for him. After that initial excitement he became known as the player who gets hammered in every final he reaches.
Felix has really fallen off. He used to be the kryptonite for Alcaraz but he's losing to players left and right. Carlos is beginning to get his footing back after a rough last few matches going back to the US Open loss to Medvedev.
Alcaraz may be struggling right now, but this is about as close to an ideal surface for him as you can get. Slow like a clay court but with the movement of a hard court
Alcaraz looks as good as ever, seems like he really likes this court and conditions. Now if he can get his revenge for the losses he suffered lately against Marozsan, Zverev, Sinner and Djokovic/Medvedev all in one week, I guess it will be his favourite hard court ever. Just looking at the draw and possible match ups it looks like a super hard challenge to defend this title, both physically and mentally. What do you think, can he make it?
@@colethomas903 What do you mean by "all this stuff"? If you didn't get my point, I can explain. The way this draw is most likely to unfold for Carlos gives him opponents that stopped him from having a dream year 2023. Marozsan upset him at the Rome Masters 1000, it was very unexpected loss against an unknown player for whom it was the first ever tour level tournament played. And he beat him basically the way Alcaraz usually beats his opponents on clay, with powerful ball striking and excellent drop shots. If he can beat Marozsan tomorrow, it will be a sweet revenge. Then he is most likely to meet Zverev (although we shouldn't count out DeMinaur, maybe he will beat Sascha) and if he does, he will play him after losing their last two matches - in Turin round robin and at the Australian Open. He is 3:5 against Zverev so it's a really tough match up for him. In the semifinal he can meet Sinner, who also beat him in their last two meetings (Miami and Beijing) and he is 3:4 against him. And finally Novak, who beat him in Cincinnati and Turin since Wimbledon and Alcaraz is 2:3 against him. So if the path to the title goes like this, there is a lot to prove for Carlos and he needs to show big mental strength against four opponents who had his number last year. Even if it's Medvedev in the final, who Alcaraz managed to beat in Turin, he can still have the US open semifinal loss in the back of his mind, so that match would also have some extra spice to it. FAA on the other hand, his game plan didn't have any proper weapons to put pressure on Alcaraz... This was very below average match from FAA...
It's just sad that Felix. at such a young age, doesn't seem interested in changing and improving his game. On the other hand, you look at a guy like Jannik Sinner, he has been obsessed with adding new dimensions to his game. Someone needs to tell Felix that, without a transition game, the sport of tennis is quickly passing him by, and he seemingly doesn't even realize that that is the reality of what's happening. He was giving it a go late last year, but, at this point, has obviously given up on venturing to the net. This is quite sad because his volleying skill were slowly and steadily improving. Also, the elementary backhand that both Felix and Casper hit is a liability because it sits up too often. Felix need to learn how to hit an effective slice backhand. he also need to learn how to flatten out his backhand, which, admittingly, is not the easiest think to learn but, considering his age, it still can be done. Who knows though, his goal might be just to a few millions dollars while he can and just let things slide. Sad to think that though, because at one point everyone thought he would win Grand Slams. You get the feeling though that Felix has already given up that ever happening. It would be very sad, because you saw the same thing happen when Federer came around. A lot of guys talented players just gave up because they thought Federer was a "natural," and, because Fed was so good, they no longer had a chance at winning Grand Slams and, so, they just stop improving their games...Improving for what? I think the arrival of Carlos is having the same affect on guys that are just slightly older than Carlos. Thank God Jannik Sinner didn't buy into this fatalistic and defeatist mindset.
Second round, and don’t act as if this match was a QF level, because it was not, with Aliassime doing a double fault every game and playing to short, it was going to be easy for Carlos
Don't want to take anything away from Carlos but FAA is playing really poorly. Most of the balls landing way too short, giving Carlos an ez opportunity to dictate the game.

Is this the quarter-finals or second round?
Second round, and don’t act as if this match was a QF level, because it was not, with Aliassime doing a double fault every game and playing to short, it was going to be easy for Carlos
Is this sped up?
Stop putting winner in thumbnail please, it ruins the highlights.
Don't want to take anything away from Carlos but FAA is playing really poorly. Most of the balls landing way too short, giving Carlos an ez opportunity to dictate the game.
To try and go toe to toe from the baseline with Alcaraz is just suicidal for FAA
shot by felix at 3:17 is so bad... lmao... had the whole right side and hits it there,,,, dude is not feeling it rn
