Maybe it's because Microsoft was more tech, competition in that field is to be taken seriously. Competition in that field advances innovations in tech, data and related things, Microsoft is a lot more tech heavy than Amazon. Not saying this is the reason but I can see why regulators may have looked at it differently.

After 7 years, result Flipkart got sold to Walmart Snapdeal valuation slipped from $7 billion to $1 billion and now at the verge of shutting down. And Amazon is thriving. This video comes up a great point: If we all support Amazon to buy everything from this website to help Amazon dominates on every fields it touches, guess what, soon we will find we have to pay more for everything we have to buy in the coming future. Here is an example in my local community. We used to have two hair cut shops. We often received good deals from both shops. When one shop was closed, the survived one increased the price immediately, now we have no choice, we have to go to that shop with a higher price. That is why we have to be cautious of Amazon monopoly. The best deal for us customers is to have more choices.
And this is why china will surpass America. New york bullied amazon out of new york. American government is preventing amazons growth. China would never do that. Chinese companies such as huawei and alibaba are growing ultrafast and the Chinese government is actually helping them. And this is why chinese companies will dominate this world in a decade
I get your point, but what do you say about the fact, that another business could now open and offer lower prices. If amazon would be the hair cut shop, they then would lower their prices under that of new new shop till it dies. But this cannot be the case on this small scale. Thoughts?
DefenderN DefenderN if a new barber shop opens in the town the now rich barber (Jef Bezos) can lower his prices and operate on a loss for longer than the new recently opened one, meaning that the new barber shop will either have to close or sell out to the rich barber(oversimplified ofcourse). Also, the rich barber shop had invested millions in bots that collect data about his customers and knows exactly what a customer want, when and how much he is willing to pay for it, you can’t compete with that.
PengyBoz while the example that our friend gave before with the barber shops is good and helps us to understand the situation a little bit more clearly, ofcourse it is not complete and doesn’t present the reality. In reality things are way more complex. First of all, monopolies are never good for the economy. That is a fact that I think that everybody can agree on. Like you saw in the video, Amazon has no problem operating on a loss or on a very small profit margin as long as they stay on top, so they will keep lowering their prices on different products in order to stay up there. Yes, other competitors will rise, maybe some of them with better prices, but will we, the majority of consumers care? We learned in this video that one of amazons big goals is to keep you on the website and in their “environment” , and they are doing it in an amazing way, as we are able to buy EVERYTHING on their site. So if I want to buy let’s say condoms and diapers, I will buy them from amazon even though I might find a better deal for the diapers in other place , it’s just more comfortable for me to stay in the same page, and props to them for making it that way. So competitors will most likely die off or have a very hard time staying alive, but as you said, we shouldn’t care because well, Amazon is just better for the consumer. But is it though? This video failed to say that Amazon payed in the last years, ALMOST NO TAXES, and all that while they are paying their workers next to nothing. The government won’t do anything as they are way too powerful. So you are stuck with a company that doesn’t pay any taxes, that pays their workers like shit and that causes small and medium business that DO pay taxes and (usually) treat their employees better to go out of business. In the long run is way worst for the economy, and especially if you live in a country that is not the US, as all that wealth generated by Amazon doesn’t stay in the community , and does not enrich it like a normal locally run business would. All in all I think that in the long run, Amazon is bad for our economy , and not just because of the reasons I have said before, but also because we are slowly moving towards uncharted territories, we have never seen international monopolies before, we never had to deal with companies that yield so much power, who knows what Jeff Bezos’ plans are for the medium and long term future. I only hope that these companies don’t get way too powerful, as it could be dangerous for the society in general.

Jeff Bezos, may or may not be a brilliant businessman, but one thing is for sure, he had "deep" backing; as all of our major tech outfits have. Walmart did not kill small business, just like elites are not destroying freedoms; all you need for that is to apply a little pressure to a lazy, feckless, non-empathetic population. the TV series based on Philip K Dick's electric dreams had an interesting episode about "the store" that no doubt had Amazon in mind - that one was worth a watch.
Unfortunately, the reality is that a lot of different industries had the same thing happen. Barnes and Noble, Gamstop, and Walmart all pulled this sort of shit to kill off most of the small business competition they were facing, but now that Amazon is poised to straight up kill them all, it's a problem. I used to live in a small town with a Borders books, a company that went under due to the aggressive business of B&N. I like Amazon, because my choice for books went from local bookstore (within walking distance) to B&N 20 minutes away by car.

@Joseph Geiger if you think there is an issue with AWS partnering with Homeland Security then you basically have no idea what cloud networking or data transferring is. I really find it disguisting that these companies have this mentality of locking down people rather than serving them best way possible and then expecting them to stay for the quality of their services.
"Decentralizing our economy... is the responsibility of every individual..." WRONG! This is the federal government's responsibility. Preventing monopolies is one of the major purposes of gov't. The best thing we can all do is hound our representatives and the FTC to stop being corrupt and start doing their job - but we shouldn't have to. I'm tired of everything being put on individual shoulders. This is the very kind of thinking that allows these disasters to happen in the first place.
Amazon does have a large amount of market power and they are using it effectively to bring about large changes in industry. This can be good or bad as when market power is typically abused, the customer is who ends up paying the price (the concept of price fixing when it comes to monopolies). However, the company does seem to be in an interesting position as it largely functions as an intermediate between other companies and the customer which allows it to have enough market power to place pressure on other companies. Pressure on other companies is what drives innovation and low prices in a free market and I do not believe that we know the extent of the positive or negative effects that a company with large market power can place on other companies and I do believe that this is where most of the room for debate would be as to if we should or should not look into breaking up amazon. I do believe that this video however does dangerously exaggerate some of what Amazon does sprinkled with some misinformation. I would argue that the idea that Jeff Bezos has a believe in "shareholder supremacy" as mentioned in the video appears to be fundamentally incorrect. The important quote that this statement is derived from was that they look to create "shareholder value over the long term". This does not mean everything is justified as long as the shareholder value is growing, in fact there are instances where actions that cause decreases in shareholder value today that are justified. The goal of this is to create shareholder value in the future and Jeff Bezos seems to believe that in order to do this properly one must place the customer first and over everything else including that of those employed. This style of thought has lead to the reinvestment of their profits which has allowed them to create new services and valuable tools for the world as a whole. Prime was also not seen as an immediate success as initially those who signed up for the free shipping program were the members who were ordering the most, causing a loss for Amazon as shipping is expensive. The ultimate goal was to increase customer loyalty and this definitely turned out to be a success but I do believe that back in 2005 this was seem more as an experiment with a decent chance of failure and that its success took a while to manifest itself. When mentioning the 2008 crisis, it seems to be implied that amazon's value increased while others were failing. When comparing amazon to an indicator of the market as a whole suck as the S&P over the 2018 year, Amazon drops by about 46.5% while the the rest drop by 41.7%, so it could be argued that amazon suffered more from the crisis. Afterward amazon continued to grow and succeed which lead to a large increase in value but nowhere close to 300% in 2 years around 2008 like the video claimed (except during the .com bubble in 2000). Amazon did do some sketchy things when it came to the kindle and specifically the management of relations with publishers which ended in an anti-trust against the book publishers when apple (and Steve Jobs) worked to help force prices of books up to try to deal a blow to amazon. The whole thing was kind of a mess. So there was an anti-trust case that was brought up when it came to books as there were explicit increases in prices, but it was not actually against amazon. (see Steve Jobs quote "the customer pays a little more, but that’s what you want anyway"). Lastly, when it comes to looking into the history of AWS, it was a weird success where Amazon stumbled across a technology that is highly demanded years before anyone else entered the field. There are options from namely microsoft (and IBM and Google) that offer competing services. Basically I find the statement that they are on track to control half of the market share misleading and just incorrect as it is currently controlling around 33% of cloud infrastructure market share with microsoft's service growing more quickly.
Yeah I was questioning the AWS part and in addition to the market share error you point out I don't get the part where he is talking about how AWS gives Amazon a significant advantage to see new market trends and analyse data. The services on the AWS platform are not being mined for data by Amazon and are in fact for the most part privately managed and controlled by the people/businesses that contract them
To call it a monopoly while recognizing the unique structure is a contradiction to the third party sellers. It's an online marketplace. Yes the size and monopolistic tendencies are not good, and along with this you have to recognize a huge part of its success depends on being a web host for independent sellers. People have independent Amazon businesses and it's astounding how successful they are. The situation is not as simple as it being a "monopoly"; instead you should ask what the growing monopolistic control is over? I'd say the answer is online marketplace services, not so much selling directly.

There are no 'innate' rights, except perhaps those that you can personally enforce against others. But, as an individual, that's not going to amount to much. Can't take something that was never really there in the first place. The reason governments can take your rights away at all is because they're generally the only reason you have any of those rights in the first place.
Did you even watch the video? Amazon reigns supreme more *without* the government. Amazon has so much capital that they can force businesses to sell themselves to Amazon, and Amazon keeps the lower prices, ultimately benefiting the consumer.
The main problem dealing with Amazon now is that it exists in a global marketplace, specifically in a marketplace where China protects and encourages even worse business practices from its domestic companies (e.g. Tencent, Alibaba). If the US government decided to break up Amazon this would be handing a major advantage to Chinese companies that are in no way held back by the same constraints. That certainly doesn't mean that Amazon should be allowed to continue on unfettered, but it does mean that the government needs to tread carefully to avoid destroying their economic advantage in tech.
can't really relate to this other than aws because in Switzerland Amazon support is really bad. But I got to admit I buy my things from the big vendors here. It's just too convenient
That's one way of saying you don't understand banks, corruption and being lucky enough to have the infrastructure ready when banks are willing to lift you up to a lucrative monopoly.
Now, don't try to throw an argument. It isn't very poilite to imply someone is unintelligent. Instead, please explain how banks wants Amazon to become a monopoly. Then people hear can learn something new. Just like this video explains the business model, so people can be more knowledgeable. Nevertheless, I don't believe anybody could pull this off and, his plan is still really good for Amazon.

Amazon made an $11.2bn profit in 2018 but paid no federal tax Company is not paying any taxes for the second year in a row, due to various unspecified ‘tax credits’ and executive stock options. think before you click and buy it leads to empty shopping centres unemployment for shop workers and massive wealth for a few lucky people. not to mention poor and dangerous working conditions for workers around the world
cost of living is getting more expensive.. are wages getting higher? no. so of course people want the best deals, and faster. this is why amazon is successful
You kind of missed the point that Amazon's strategy is to first kill the competition and then raise prices arbitrarily once customers have no competition to fall back to.
When you buy from big companies, you help them with there next sport car. When you buy local, you help a normal family. The wealth gap is real, and its up to you. not someone else
The majority of consumers will always opt for convenience. There has to be something better, or the government step in. In my opinion. Edit: Meaning, I dont think people will just choose to stop shopping Amazon for the reasons put forth by ygos video.
All I know is ... there's stuff I can get on Amazon I just can't get anywhere else, at any price, delivered straight to my door, with free shipping. And most of the rest that I *can* get elsewhere is still way, way cheaper on Amazon. Although this is becoming less true now that eBay is essentially Amazon 2.0, selling more retail goods than second hand. Not that I'm comfortable with monopolies, but the fact is that Amazon only has that monopoly because every other retailer dragged their feet over e-commerce, treating it like some kind of fad that would soon pass, while Amazon not only embraced it but pioneered the entire market. Is Amazon "evil"? Yes, but then frankly so is every other business, big and small. In fact some of the smallest companies I've worked for have working policies straight out of the Middle Ages, whereas the bigger companies, being far more conspicuous, simply wouldn't get away with that nonsense, because they're under such intense scrutiny from government regulators. As for Amazon's near-zero margins. Good. That means I'm paying what those goods are actually worth, not funding some Apple-esque reality distortion field.
I hate how Amazon has gone from using boxes to shipping almost everything in padded envelopes, 90% of the time when they ship something to me in a padded envelope it will arrive all scuffed up, torn, bent, or with some other physical damage like a blemish on it which is really crappy for people that buy Collectors Editions of movies, books, video games or like keeping the boxes in perfect condition for display purposes (like with Limited Edition items).

Joke's on them. I cut my own hair.
I only hope that these companies don’t get way too powerful, as it could be dangerous for the society in general.

the TV series based on Philip K Dick's electric dreams had an interesting episode about "the store" that no doubt had Amazon in mind - that one was worth a watch.
Unfortunately, the reality is that a lot of different industries had the same thing happen. @@mandernachluca3774 Mandernach Luca Elon cares about mankind or at least that's what it seems. Right now he's the most important person alive, all the progress that he is bringing through inversion in different areas is no joke.
@@0lzd
Yeah no.
He is not bringing the progress, it was already there, he is only making profit of it.
Think about Tesla EVs, in a sense, Elon even stops progress, because of his "fool cell" comment, every respectable engineer would tell you, that building a semi truck with fuel cell is the way to go.
Elon basically made that comment because his cars are BEVs and not FCEVs, of course he than favors batteries.
Now, think about Space X, where they the first to land and start a rocket vertically? No, they where not even the first to launch one into space and landing it vertically, it was Blue Origin. Nasa was the first to come up with the idea and Soace X is now the one making profit of it.
Or how about Neuralink, just recently, they announced some revolutionary tests, right?
No, they are actually as far as the rest of the industry, if not a bit behind. I guarantee you, that he will also try to make profit of this one.
What about the hyperloop? Well, i actually think that this company could do some groundbreaking work, if they reach supersonic speeds. However, even this idea is not new and they still haven't managed a working prototype.
To conclude, not one of his projects indicates to me, that he "cares" about humans but rather about the money and the technology. That's exactly what Bezos is after.
Jeff Bezos and Elon Musk follow the same philosophy, just with the slight difference, that Elon is very childish and has better skills at polarizing people. That's exactly, why you perceive him as a "better" human being.
Well, it is your fault for falling for this kind of trick ;D.
one reason the government is helping out amazon is because the company gives info collected from its Echo product...which is nothing more than a tracking device...1984 anyone?
Yup. And the video didn't even mention that Amazon DOESN'T PAY ANY TAXES.
@@FRN2013 it paid 2.6Billio in corp tax last year? Why are you lying and spreading misinformation as a way of achieving your agenda?
@Joseph Geiger if you think there is an issue with AWS partnering with Homeland Security then you basically have no idea what cloud networking or data transferring is. The government's technology is nowhere near as advanced as AWS, in fact, they lag behind nearly every big tech company. AWS is simply providing them a vital service to which they could have chosen any other competitor (Azure, Google, Facebook, etc.)
Plus, if you can't even write with basic grammar, then you have bigger problems to worry about than some security contracts.

I thought it was Dr Evil from Austin Powers.

I just realized his stark resemblance to Lex Luthor...
None of this would have happened if it wasn't for central bank subsidies in the form of multiple credit bubbles.
Amazon's business model is to basically not make money in ecommerce. During the 90's they were notorious for losing money, and even after major cutbacks following the dot com bust they still barely made any money. Easy credit during the 2000's allowed them to lower their borrowing costs below what they should have been.

The reason governments can take your rights away at all is because they're generally the only reason you have any of those rights in the first place.
