The fact that this was done in one take - on the FIRST take - is mind blowing.
Kristin is a QUEEN for pulling this off.
But also, so much appreciation for the ensemble and choreographers in this number - it’s all so incredibly smart. Watch it enough times and you can see how every move is calculated to move the scene along, hand her props, etc.
This number is a group effort in its finest sense and was pulled off masterfully.
Rehearsals! Extensive rehearsals.
The fact that she sang this LIVE and in ONE TAKE
A PRO AT HER BEST!!!!!
And of course huge respect to the Steadicam operator and focus puller lol
It's not sung live. It's all pre-recorded music done months before filming that they lip sync to when filming. The filming is in one take.
@@Banjo_Tails they recorded the songs but they did sing live as well, dove cameron mentioned about how they all sung live because the director wanted the series to seem more like a musical, I believe the final version of the songs are a mix of recorded tracks and live singing
@@taylordelrey91 They may have sung it when doing the shot because it helps with the acting side of things, but its the recording studio audio we hear in the episode. This isn't new, it's done for all all tv series and movies when singing is involved. I don't know why people can not understand this in 2023. They have been doing this shit since 1927 in the Jazz singer.
@banjotails9155 I'm not sure you're right. The recording of this is pretty different than what's in the show. If she was lipsyching, then it was to a different recording than what's on the soundtrack
The irony is that now that we've seen Schmicago, all her predictions came true.
I know 😂 it was like - uuuuhhh wait a second - but she was right
"Poor wife is so ashamed she locked herself inside the house... And this time on purpose!" Jokes are flying so fast
This is one of my favorite lines in the number! Especially the "I'm sorry Florence! 😫🤣"
While Chenoweth is definitely to be commended, we also need to commend the rest of the cast for also nailing this in one take as well. Because even though she could have nailed it, if others didn't, she would have had to start all over again.
It's a team effort people!
Honestly, it’s really not that surprising that Chenoweth could pull it off in one take, since that’s just what theatre actors do. You don’t have that luxury of just being able to call a take and start over because you messed up when you are performing in front of a live audience!
What really makes this incredible was how the rest of the company, and the camera operators, and production crew also brought their A game to be able to pull this off.
kristin is definitely america's queen of musicals. Her talent is amazeballs 😍😍😍
Such a legend.
"they'll never find us here!" and "okay I'll do it" kill me every time
And “good old American je ne sais quoi”
I love the detail of her holding the Bible upside down.
In some talk shows she indirectly mentioned who she was referencing when he held the bible upside.
@@rick90604whittier ua-cam.com/video/8_mePjkQW_c/v-deo.html
And she was carrying a broom at the end...
Yea, its a prop.lol...
I loved that
And just throws it away when she's done with it. It's cool detail.
I can't get over the clever lyrics beautifully performed by this modern day Broadway legend! And she's DANCING!
Definite shades of "Trouble in River City" from The Music Man. I love how they pay homage to all the classics while keeping it modern and funny.
I like how she brings up "miscegenation" and the chorus responds with "I don't know what that is, but it sounds bad!"
“Shades of”… 😂 As if it’s not virtually a direct copy
@@oldvlognewtricks Same vain as Cold Showers from Crazy Ex-Girlfriend
I love the charming irony of Kristin Chenoweth singing this song, seeing as she played Marian in Disney's TV remake of the Music Man in 2003.
I feel like the ghost of Robert Preston was guiding Kristen during this number.
And being Maleficent in Disney descendants
Just in awe of how amazing this show is. And this is the most amazing take-off/homage to “Trouble” I’ve ever seen. They poke fun at these old musicals, but in a very loving way.
I don’t see that it’s poking fun at it, you can’t like fun at Trouble, it’s just a homage.
@@fruityguyxxx This show is an excellent parody to Golden Age musicals.
What a wonderful re-interpretation of a classic scene! I couldn't stop laughing at the 10-car-pile up of horrors Chenoweth rattles off with amazing precision.
“Not loud mouth trash with their tommyrot and flap doodle clap trap fiddle faddle jiggery pokery “
I was squealing with delight first time I saw this.
I cannot get enough of this song ever since watching the show. That riff at 1:02 made me drop my jaw and gasp so hard lol. Kristen Chenoweth is a force of nature.
Literally done in one take all hail the Queen
This is probably the most difficult song to perform I’ve ever heard with the amount of movement she has to do, the seeming lack of melody to the lyrics and the speed she has to deliver them
And yet she is walking through it. Not phoning it in, I don’t mean that at all. I just mean she’s not even breaking a sweat, so to speak. Broadway goddess
@@83gemm I love how it’s somehow a SINGLE SHOT like it would have to be, for her if it were an actual stage performance.
@@jonathanbenavidez201 Yes it’s incredibly impressive.
I agree but don’t know if you ever seen her perform “if you hadn’t but you did” - that was equally as impressive as it must of haven been difficult to perform as well!
This deserves every award. Maybe a Nobel Peace Prize. It is everything. I never fully appreciated Kirstin for all her talents but I do now!
So there's the obvious "Trouble in River City" reference from The Music Man. I'm also picking up a Wicked/Wizard of Oz reference with the broom and Kristin's outfit resembling Margaret Hamilton's Kansas outfit in The Wizard of Oz. Kristin Chenoweth was, of course, Glinda in the original Broadway cast of Wicked.
Finally, the cannon at the end feels like a nod to the cannon gag in Mary Poppins.
I listened to this song a few dozen times and watched the video a bunch before I noticed the amazing switcheroo at 0:31. So smooth!
All done in one single camera shot. Amazing!
Kristin Chenoweth needs to do more villain songs
Did she do another duet with Dove in this series just like Descendants?
I hope you thoroughly enjoyed the songs she gave her in the second season! :)
the “ i’m sorry florence” gets me every time
Me too!!! 😭😫 it's just too good 🤣
Love how they have Kristin singing this shows version of "Ya Got Trouble" from The Music Man since she was Marian in the movie with Matthew Broderick 🤣
Didn't know they made a TV movie of The Music Man, not surprised though.
They should all get Emmy nominations for their Amazing performances 🎭
Especially her.
And except Keegan Michael peel, he phoned it in...
This is absolutely incredible. A true professional.
I love the lines I can make out - like "the good old-fashioned all-American je ne sais quoi"! Classic. I'm sure as I listen a few more times I'll make out the rest. If they had Kristen Chenowith, the songwriters had to give her a great 4 minute long number, and they nailed it!
This is simply amazing! all in 1 take definitely one of my favorite numbers
She's basically describing season 2
From some of the comments I’m reading here and elsewhere, I’m starting to realize there might be some watching this (and apparently enjoying it) without getting all the references to the classic shows! They’d enjoy it even more if they familiarize themselves with Brigadoon, Oklahoma!, Carousel, The Music Man, The Sound of Music, and a few others. (episode 5, Kiss Me Kate. Loved it!)
Oh, we see the references!!! "Schmigadoon" is brilliant just for it's ability to access, seemingly, every musical ever written.
No kidding. I catch the really obvious ones (the mayor's introduction seemed right out of The Wizard of Oz for example) But I know so little about musicals I didn't even know Brigadoon was a thing LOL. And I' really enjoying this anyway.
That said I suspect I like my musicals in small doses.
@@steveburton1980 Glad you’re enjoying it but can you imagine how those of us who know musicals are reacting? With every character, every song, almost every spoken line, note of music and situation we’re lighting up and often laughing out loud because that’s straight out of (fill in the blank)! It reminds us of the times we’ve seen that show as well as the movie version, the hours we’ve spent listening to a cast recording or soundtrack album, and for many of us, when we were actually IN a production of it! (A former Harold Hill here, who is the leading character in The Music Man. See episode 5, Mildred Layton and “Tribulation”.)
@@randyseay4855 I think it's awesome I'm happy it's bringing you joy.
Was Brigadoon a musical? I thought it was a show.
I feel like the "They'll never find us here" line is a bit ominous... I mean it's probably nothing, but it's just kind of suspicious how Josh and Melissa ended up there with no way out and it doesn't seem like there's a clear way in since the bridge is some kind of infinite loop. "They'll never find us here" might mean that Mrs. Layton's ancestor came from the regular world same as Melissa and Josh. Will Josh and Melissa leave the place together? Or will the entire town be brought into the regular world when Josh and Melissa break free?
No. The joke is that she is descended from someone on the run, probably criminals, but she’s all high and mighty and a religious zealot
Lol now the series look like netflix's Dark
From the first words: Trouble! We got trouble right here in River City! Taken right from The Music Man. The rhythm, the description of the Trouble - it's all there!
Despite if you like this song or not ..18 pages...done in one take...did a second take for fun but they still used the first take. That is INSANE. She is a GODDESS!
And it’s all one shot!
Question: is the amazing Kristen singing this live? It’s clearly one very long take. Brilliant!
Pretty sure it's lipsynced, but all filmed in one take.
@@jasonmarks80 no they shot the entire series live except for one scene (not this one)
@@TheGregoryEllwood Got it! Thank you!
...if she's not nominated come Emmy season, well then I just don't know...
I thought it had to be dubbed but turns out, no it’s freaking live.
ONE SINGLE TAKE! Kristin Chenoweth is incredible!
She just engineered a fascist takeover of her whole town in 4 minutes.
That little Hitler salute ending in a finger point is stunning.
I didn't fully understand Kristin Chenoweth's brilliance when I was a kid, but now I'm so grateful to have grown up on her work and to have stuff like this to live for.
Amazing x great performance and all in one take!! X
Watching this after Season 2 has started airing and I don't wanna say Mildred was right but...... Josh and Melissa DID start the song "This is how we change" which leads to Schmicago... She called it. "You won't even know your own town."
I really love how she clearly seems to have so much fun here :D (Except for being an amazing actress, singer and performer).
Amazing movie. It’s absolutely worth seeing.
"No hot water, which means cold showers..."
NEXT THING YA KNOW YOUR KIDS WILL BE ON CRACK!
@@richardbourton4523 THIS MAKES SENSE!
"And cold showers are a gateway to crack."
Wait a minute, this isin't Crazy Ex-Girlfriend
It isn't a Kristen Chenoweth number without a high note at the end
It's a great one shot!
So she has the Bible upside down and carries a broom. 🧙
Now that is a Queen!
Love the shout out to Music Man's Trouble in River city. However, we can't ignore the parody and satirist tones in this musical number. Clearly this is a reprimand of all things MAGA. Thank God for artists and musicians to shine a spot light on American politics, religious intolerance, Bigotry
and people who abuse it.
…how is it about MAGA, or any specific modern political movement for that matter?
Weeeeeelll 😂some of the things she was singing about did come to pass in season two when Schmigadoon became Schmicago
All hail the Broadway Queen, and her Music Man parody!!!
I think she's a witch keeping this town as a musical
That's a good theory
Like Agatha or Scarlet Witch?
@@puterboy2 yeah exactly
This definitely gives off "trouble in river city" vibes from the music man.
This show shows how incredible musicals are.
To be a fly on the wall!!! Ugh. Amazing! Also the apple logo almost looked like a depiction of the logo from wicked. Green and black? Or maybe I’m just overlooking that. Haha.
Am I the only one that wishes this were a real Broadway musical?
oustanding performance, the only cut is about 3:55, all of the song in just one take
God she’s terrifying!
If this show gets a season 2, I hope they can get Rob Paulson in the cast. Would be amazing to hear a duet between him and Kristen Chenowith. And for those that don’t know him, he’s the yakko Warner from animaniacs that can sing the countries of the world in one take. And if not in schmigadoon, then Kristen guest starring in animaniacs
OH MY GOD literally The Music Man vibes :)
I love the apple store😂
Ya got trouble my friend!
It's time to vote, and vote for Layton. She is the only one who can save our town from Satan!
Imagine being an ancient Gay man like me and stumbling across this one scene on Twitter. One giant WTF? Meredith Wilson wrote this? After one minute. Okay, no. But how did they get the notoriously-difficult-to-procure music rights? The number finishes. I see another one with Jane Krakowski as The Baroness de Sound of Music. I race to Wikipedia. Wow. How did this get made? Talk about a niche market. Oh. Tim Cook.
some of these line deliveries are giving madeline kahn!
She is one of Kristin’s biggest inspirations.
I like how she snuck in "miscegenation" towards the end there
And the cast replying “that sounds bad!”
Which is especially hilarious since so many of the Schmigadoon couples are mixed and no one seems to care, not even her
What if Betsy is actually mrs Layton's daughter that she had out of wedlock? And from the shame of having a child with the farmer guy she became really strict and married the prist and everything so no one would suspect that. I mean mabye I just really want dove cameron to be her daughter in another show
ouuu so oscar for her, no cut scene like thisss???
She’s completely correct. She is the hero of this movie
Trouble in River City
Maleficent in another dimension XD
I think she accused them of witchcraft at one point!
It was Mrs. Menlove who accused Mrs. Layton and the biddies of being witches.
One take. No rhymes. ONE TAKE. COME ON!!
And live... (Compare this scene with the other songs you can clearly hear the difference)
I mean, that’s just what theatre actors do. You can’t just call the take and restart when you are performing in front of a live audience!
What’s even more impressive is that everyone else in the company and the production crew was able to coordinate and pull off such a complex shoot with lots of moving parts. Everyone had to be on their A game to make this work, and they pulled it off beautifully.
I want the story of her great great granddaddy
THAT MUSIC AND BEAT IS LITERALLY FROM MUSIC MAN
Not tribulation?
Thank you.
That was 18 pages in one take!
In fairness to her, everything she says will happen to their town because of Josh and Melissa actually happens in season 2: "Neon signs, smoke-filled rooms... wanton women... etc. etc."
Is she a witch?
It really sounds like she's saying tribulations, are you sure it's turbulations?
@Guypole Threadbare , she totally is, other videos including the interview with her all call it tribulation. Don't know where they got turbulation from
Anyone getting a Mary Poppins vibe at the final song?
Can't go watch Broadway musicals? Then this "Broadway" (Broadband?) musical go to you through the singing magic of streaming.
(And by the way.... this is kind of the perfect show for white Canadians...... which means ..... it might actually be very good.... in spite of bland Canadians liking it.... or not.... I don't know..... Wanna sing to my silly comment?...... No? ...... That's pretty unfortunate..... I know this would sound great in A major).
Why did we have to wait till ep 5 to see Kristin Chenoweth's turn? I've been waiting since ep 1.
My thought exactly.
Anyone else notice the Nazi salute at 2:53?
i was looking for this comment bc i wasn’t sure if that’s what was happening
they did a bad job at showcasing that joke, sort of weird that its hidden. I guess a little McCarthyism never hurt anyone
You’ve got trouble for sure
Anyone else notice that the background on the left side of the screen at 2:20-2:40 kind of looks like Level 94 of the Backrooms?
I want a Rap version !
The only 4:00 on Apple TV+ worth a shit.
First movie to not have Dove as her daughter
Never a musical piece summarized how fascism rises.
You never saw Tomorrow Belongs to Me from Cabaret? Also calling this “fascism” might be a bit much
Might that broom be a nod to "Wicked"? ua-cam.com/video/O5V9KwppMfs/v-deo.html
I had to look up "miscegenation."
This song would make more sense, and probably would be a lot darker, if Mildred was prejudiced against non-caucasians and everyone in Schmigadoon was white.
She’s deeply against pre-marital sex and interracial couples, and it’s later revealed her daughter is engaged in both. She’s lashing out at the entire town because of her daughter, but thankfully, Mildred comes around.
So...who else was today years old when they found out miscegenation means interracial reproduction?
i love Kristin Chenoweth, but i wanted her song to be more villanous, musically :( not so upbeat
that's cause you like anime
@@Dr.LongMonkey anime has no musical numbers. Plus im sick of "the music man" parodies
Why anyone would watch this instead of the actual musicals is beyond me
The actual musicals have too many ballads and I can’t understand their weird accents
the verses of this song are so messy and quick that it seems like someone just threw together a bunch of words and i can’t even tell what she’s saying--(edit) it appears there is a musical reference i didn’t get there which i now realize after multiple people have shown me, i apologize for my insensitivity
@@kbye2321 ohhh i’ve never heard this type of singing before- i didn’t get it
It's an homage to this song from The Music Man: ua-cam.com/video/LI_Oe-jtgdI/v-deo.html
My partner and I were watching this and all we could think of was country rap
Have you ever seen the Music Man? Lol
Yeah it’s definitely the point. By throwing all these accusations out so fast she bamboozles the town. When they all say “that sounds bad” it’s part of the joke haha
Boo to the showrunners! Chenoweth is so much funnier than this. Chenoweth sings so much better than this. Why pay for a heavy hitter and not let them swing away? Give her some good material!!
Boo to this comment. This song and production are brilliant, as is Ms. Chenoweth.
Did you listen to the end?
I sort of agree, I hope the last episode gives all the belters like Kristen, Dove, and Aaron a show stopping song. This show suffered from too short episodes and too few songs
What in the name of everything are you talking about?! This is the most technically difficult song in the entire show! It’s incredibly fun and fast paced and she never flubs or runs out of breath. I’ve tried to learn the words and it’s like impossible.
I bet you go to baseball games and get mad when it’s not a home run derby never mind the skill of the actual game. Not every incredible musical moment is a crazy high note -although they let her end the song on one - and this song is FOUR minutes of pure skill and tropes of old musicals that had me actually squealing.
Just TRY to sing the “not loud mouth trash with their tommyrot and flap doodle clap trap fiddle faddle jiggery pokery” bit and remember she’s moving around the whole song and never so much as takes an audible breath!
And it’s done completely live and with no cuts.
this is the worst song by far
@Eriona Pillow i didn't like it one bit , true it get better by the end , and it was in 1 take which is cool but as a whole song its my least favorite like 2/3 of is just talking without rhyme and spinning in cercles
@Eriona Pillow dont take it personally , its just my opinion maybe this type of music isn't for me i dont know
@@RED01SEA I don’t much like patter songs either (my fav parts in this song are where the ensemble are echoing her with their gorgeously high soars of ‘GOT STRIFE!’ ‘TRIBULATION’ ‘THAT SOUNDS BAD!’ ‘VOTE FOR LAYTON’ etc.), but it’s a legitimate song style like the song ‘modern major general’. Please do check out the song’s inspiration ‘ya got trouble’ from the music man, I don’t love the style but both Strife and Tribulation and Ya Got Trouble are great examples of the form.
Patter songs also tend to be very technically difficult to pull off correctly, and the fact that they managed to do live in one take, is crazy.
@@megelizabeth9492 it was filmed in one take. it's not sung live. Its not that difficult once you do the blocking of a scene.
