Girl is 100% the standout of this entire show!!! I love when dancers get promoted to leading roles, Ariana is a true triple threat
Yeah, she’s incredible. So much pure talent.
“Girl” is named Ariana DeBose, from Hamilton and one of the stars as Anita of West Side Story. Not “Girl.”
@@DS9Sisko she calls her Ariana in the second sentence……
@@DS9Sisko why are you so defensive lmao
@@nebula5753 I will let you catch up with what the word "defensive" means. Then get back to me.
I can hardly wait to see Ariana DeBose what does with the role of Anita - she is so talented! Her movements are graceful, the use of arms and hands - there's so much to admire.
Anita as in West Side Story??
@@rick90604whittier Yes!
@@erpollock I want her to play Elphaba in the wicked movie
I love how this song is a good metaphor for Josh's relationship with Melissa. How Josh gives up on the door is somewhat similar to he just gives up on trying to improve his relationship with Mel.
It was intentionally set up with the door knob the dunce hat, and the letters on the boards, maybe she knew that this would happen and choreographed a perfect dance number?
And the reason they are laughing is that
Easily the best number in the entire series. Brilliant! Not just the song, but the choreography and the fluid camerawork. The kids are exceptional and Ms. DeBose is astonishing. I've watched this clip dozens of times and have never grown bored. It never fails to bring a smile to my face and joy to my heart. I'm 70 years old. I have seen it all and this is special. Bravo! There just aren't enough superlatives to describe this scene.
I like how you said this was special. I couldn’t agree more. There is some sort of magic there with her performance. It’s truly captivating.
'Magic' is just the right word to describe Ms. DeBose's performance and her musical interaction with the kids. So much talent and charm in a scene so beautifully put together.
100% agree; well put!
@@MarcWilsonActual Thanks.
i have enjoyed all the musical numbers in the series, but this is by far the best one. I have lost track of how many times I have watched it now. Ariana DuBose is a major, major talent and the tap dancing kids are just wonderful.
Okay... I have completely fallen in love with this series.
When she turns around, winks, and all the kids are tap dancing on their desks? Brilliant!
God, she’s sensational! Here you have a room full of super talented kids doing an amazing routine and yet she is the one you can’t take your eyes off. True star power. Real EGOT material. Can’t wait to see what she does with ‘America’ in West Side Story.
Ok let’s say it. After The Prom and now Schmigadoon Ariana DuBose is THE most exciting breakthrough musical star. You just know her Anita in WSS is gonna knock us out.
I didn't really see what the big deal was with her in Hamilton. But now I do-shes a star.
We will definitely be seeing her... OMG PRINCESS AND THE FROG LIVE ADAPTATION!😁🥰✌💯
I want her in the Wicked movie
@@austinpearce5442 ohhhhhh.... Yeaha! I never thought of that! As what character do you have in mind?😊
She is so talented. The way she acts the song with her face and movements is amazing!
She totally sang this live, you can tell! I love her so much!
That’s exactly what I concluded. It’s also pretty obvious Kristen is doing “Tribulation” live too. And in 1 take! Now I need to go back and see what else is done that way.
@@randyseay4855 They sang all the songs live. They tried to make it as much like live theater as possible. I read the only song they used parts re-recorded was "Tribulation", but most of it was done live as well.
@@davidfranks3939 for what I read in interviews they had to do a recorded part in this one as the first time was the better sounding and the ad libbed one was the better acted. However, in the part from the beginning (when she places the hat) it really sounds as it is a live recording given how the sound behaves depending on the position. But who knows.
@@randyseay4855 I loved that they did 4 full takes of Tribulation and wound up using the FIRST TAKE. Kristen nailed it first time
For the first minute/first verse, she's singing live. For the rest, it's the studio recording. You can tell because from 1:12 on she sounds 100% identical to how it is on the album, whereas in the first verse you can hear slight differences in her voice from the album version. It's understandable to use the recorded version once the kids come in because they'd probably have to do a lot of takes if they tried to do it with 12 kids also singing live.
This gave me Mary Poppins x Anything Goes vibes and I'm here for it
And the laughing at the end is so on point: I’m thinking of the end of Favourite Things from The Sound of Music
With a generous dose of THE KING AND I, too!
And a touch of Thoroughly Modern Millie - esp the instrumental tap section toward the end of the song
And Music Man!
Wow! I could definitely see her as a "Mary Poppins"! Wonderful voice!
I love this song. Her the kids and her voices are just amazing
I don’t know why but them spelling out things in their small chalkboards gave me some strong Matilda vibes. 😆
Totally. It’s like the alphabet song
Thats what I was thinking as well.
This is one of the standout numbers from this series, largely because while it’s got influences from all over the musical theatre and cinema landscape, it’s not a direct parody of anything in particular, and manages to become greater than the sum. While KMK is hilarious as ever with Josh’s ongoing irritation with all things musical, this is an instance where it serves particularly well as a counterpoint to boost the energy of the number rather than a “musicals 🙄 amirite” kind of vibe. It’s like that little dash of salt that brings out the flavor, allowing for the bright perfect and ludicrously cheerful dancing to not only be a good sight gag on its own but also to really shine. Sometimes musicals sag a bit on film because the spectacle of a big live choreographed number on a stage in front of you doesn’t quite translate when it’s being recorded, edited, and presented in its most perfect and curated form.
One thing movie musicals really really struggle with is the fact that, no matter how thrillingly modern the editing, the audience is always going to be in a different room, on a different day, reacting to photographs of the dancers, not the dancers themselves. It creates an uncanny effect rather than an immersive one like a live shows where characters are, for absolutely no reason, suddenly dancing and smiling like lunatics into empty space, even when they’re barreling the camera.
This number does something really magical by making the performers as unflappably cheerful and peppy as their audience, who is himself a character in the show, remains stubbornly unamused. It’s a funny dynamic and a great way to highlight how good these performers are, because his refusal to enjoy the show becomes as silly as their insistence on performing it.
She's a mix of Marian the madam librarian from Music Man and Mary Poppins, and I think they did a pretty good job fusing the two characters.
her name is marian the librarian, not marilyn 😊 but i agree!
@@gracekeddy Oh gosh, how embarassing! Of course it's Marian, it even rhymes. I edited it accordingly.
She's practically perfect in every way.
With some Maria von Trapp.
Absolutely superb! Charming performance from teacher and students, and a great original song.
Ariana DeBose plays Miss Tate.
My husband loved this scene. And he's shockingly lazy. The choreography and talent was mind-blowingly fun!
My husband wrote this and I only saw it when someone liked it, he certainly isn't lazy.
There is something special and magical about Ariana’s performance. This song and her presentation made me a fan. Her facial expressions and movements were absolutely incredible.
I love just love the look on her face when she starts tap dancing on her desk
The children were coached exceedingly well. They tap with an airy quality that is so attractive.
She's sooooooo cute I can't even stand it. I haven't seen a quadruple threat in a while and she's so worthy of a skyrocketing career.
What’s the fourth threat? I’ve only ever heard of a triple threat
"Why are they laughing? Nothing even remotely funny just happened."
I love that part. You see it all the time in these old musicals.
I love the little musical quotes of motifs from well-known musicals. Good work, Schmigadoon!
Hi, can you please have somebody take this show down at East 2:09 2:17
It's the dunce hat from Pete's dragon 😆🤣😂
And them tapping on the tables is a lot like them tapping on the beer barrels in the tavern
This show is a master class on how to *present* what is essentially a stage-musical on screen. I just caught a big-budget film of a very popular musical and I found it (personally) almost unwatchable. But this show, every week, just gets it right.
What musical?
This is a really impressive show but I also think this is a very specific kind of musical and aesthetic that they’re paying tribute to. They’re leaning into the plastic, dream like feel of these old 40s and 50s musicals. Without that element of deliberate pastiche that this show has, I think this style would end up alienating a lot of viewers.
Which musical?
Cats, possibly. It is as bad as it gets.
Was it ITH?
Wow! Such talented kids!
She is very talented. From "The Prom" to "Schmigadoon" to "West Side Story". I could honestly say it makes me excited to see what she has next on her agenda, cause she has made such awesome choices.
If there is ever a live action of Princess and the Frog Ariana is the real Life Tiana🐸💕
Dove Cameron as Charlotte!
She is adorable.
No question this is the standout number, just awesome! Ariana is an amazing triple threat!!!!
Sorry Pete!
It's so interesting, I feel like most of the songs in this show try to go after that classic Rodgers and Hammerstein sound, but this one feels more like a Kander and Ebb piece, or possibly Jerry Herman.
Its also kind of "Never Fully Dressed Without a Smile" from Annie.
The name of the the song is “With All Your Heart,” not “Job To Do”
SHE NEEDS TO PLAY THE PRINCESS IN DISNEY'S LIVE ADAPTATION OF "THE PRINCESS AND THE FROG" 😁😄✌💯🥰
"I'm no good a mufic"
Oh baby! It's ok!
Love this number! I literally lost it when they started tap dancing on the desks! Visually, of course, there is a clear Matilda reference, but musically it sounds a lot like "We Share Everything" from Side Show.
Does this remind anyone else of the "Love Is Good For Anything That Ails You" number in the film "Pennies From Heaven"?
Yes!!
Thanks for showing me this Alex.. I didnt know this movie! Love it!!!
@@brucksz If you are interested, the American movie was based on a British television mini-series of the same name, starring Bob Hoskins (who gives a brilliant performance as Arthur). The British version is considerably darker than the American, and it was done on a much tighter budget, so many of the songs are clearly being staged on a shoestring. I found the British version overly long, despite being excellently written; I thought it would be better with about half the musical interludes, but that may just be me. If you want a taste of it, UA-cam has a scene of Arthur's wife and two of her friends imagining revenge against men by performing "You Rascal, You."
@@alexsmith4937 I will have a look for sure!
Drab school marm blossoming in front of a classroom of cute kids tap dancing on their desks -- yes indeed. But the tune, especially at the beginning, sounds a little like "Whistle a happy tune" from The King and I.
Aw....that poor kid whose not good at music. 🥺
Man did he grow up in the wrong town
The song Is great, Ariana is wonderful, and those kids are fantastic! I love this show.
The crown jewel of a season full of wonderful numbers. Ariana DeBose is a goddess.
Ariana DeBose is a triple-threat axiom, and this number is a marvel. Divine.
I love the coreography!
Came for Dove Cameron, stayed for Ariana DeBose
this series cured my racism
OMG, I cannot stop watching this video! Everything about it is great! I can’t wait to start watching the show. I only checked this out cause Ariana DuBose is everything good about Broadway and musicals in general recently. Thanks for posting this, it has honestly made my day!
I hate to say most surprising fun show that I seen in long time 😂👍 Loved it!
Ariana goes should play Reno In anything goes
Oh no...not the Cone of Shame!😆😆😆
Of all the things, this gives me a strong flashback to Vella Lovell's reprise of "Settle for me" in Crazy Ex Girlfriend
Her performance of The Wizard And I leads me to believe we finally found out film version Elphaba
Our****
@@cesoire Except she looks too nice to be Elphaba. Elphie needs to have a mean looking first impression, that is like the starting point of the plot
She was amazing.
Part Matilda, part Pennies From Heaven, just a great number.
I would not be able to stop myself from singing Ariana's part like the girl at 1:36
Lol, I didn't notice that until your comment. How cute!
Smigdoon is like Willy Wonka's chocolate factory each character has a role to play and I say that metaphorically.
Despite what this video may tell you dancing fast on tables is kinda dangerous
amazing !
Her arms deserve a separate Emmy 😍
If someone began a singing number and it was entirely a Dis track I think I'd have left way before the hat, about when she pointed at the chair I'd be out the door.
Who also gets over the garden wall vibes?
I didn't even realize till you pointed that out! It does give off those vibes!
I think this is a reference to Matilda.
Annie meets How To Succeed in Business.
But she didn't finish her apple....😏 hypocrite.
This is New York, New York with different words.
Man I wish he would have turned into the sub teacher from Key & Peel.
Ariana can do no wrong. Get it girl!😍😉
She's like a more watchable less "i wanna choke you" inducing Lea Michele.
I live for Ariana DeBose's spins
Congratulations Oscar winner Ariana Debose!
Who would give this a thumbs down....lol
Alyssa green???
Yes! Now Emma Tate (who is essentially Marian the Librarian, Mary Poppins and Maria Von Trapp) and soon Anita in West Side Story. She’s just amazing.
@@randyseay4855 I want to see her in the wicked movie
How in the world did you show from biting an apple to smile and not eating and being at the back going towards the front, it was definitely a cut
Stolen straight from Pennies from Heaven…
“Stolen” is the wrong word. This show is an homage, a love letter to musicals. It hasn’t stolen from Pennies From Heaven anymore than it’s stolen from Oklahoma!, Carousel, The Music Man, Brigadoon and all the other shows it references. Our familiarity with these musicals and spotting a favorite is what makes it fun.
THE KING AND I
How racist, they don't have a single Polynesian in this scene. They've got white, black, Asian, and potentially Hispanic. People act like polys don't exist unless they're playing sports or in Hawaii.
