Loved Beamish, much nicer than Guinness, and it was served in the student bar in Swansea university in the 90s. Shame it is no longer sold outside Ireland, and even in Ireland it's not as good as was, as it lost something when they closed the original brewery and got rid of lots of the staff.
Glad I saw your review before getting a pack of these! I was excited about this, mainly because I used to drink Camden’s Black Ink Stout on draft years ago at my local craft pub and it was the best stout I’ve ever had (think it was 5.2?) and was hoping this was the same. BrewDog’s Jet Black Heart was also really good, God knows why they stopped doing it, the new stuff isn’t a patch.
My local Sainsburys was flogging these off at £1 per can (RRP £2.50) today so snagged a fair few cans. Would not buy this at full price but for a quid a throw it's good value. My go-to stout tough will remain the Nigerian Guinness import. :p
I do like a stout used to buy Murphy’s Irish stout from Asda loved it way better than the Guinness but can’t get old of it now don’t know what has happened to it.
I never touch beers below 5%. My motto low strength = low taste. I am not a pilsner bloke but Camden did an Imperial Pilsner a few years back which was one of the best bottled beers I have tasted. 10% I believe. Wouldn't touch anything in cans. Or on keg. Guinness did taste better when I was young. Even though it was on keg it had a more malty taste.
I'm a guinness lover but I do drink this Camden stout from the tap in sunderland.. and it's very nice .. the forged one I do really like ! But they are still behind guinness for me
Trued it last night. I'm impressed tbh. Added it to a beef stew and it was fantastic!. My favourite stout was called 'Gathering storm' by Leeds brewery. I think its discontinued now.
You say a lot of things that are so true (and Guinness in Dublin is definitely worth making the trip for, alone). But it's not what it used to be, here in UK and there's a gap needing to be filled; Anspach & Hobday's London Black (Nitro) is making small inroads in London, quite rightly so. This one, though, looked thin when you poured it and quite right about the 4% / 5% comment.
AB Inbev are not all bad. Camden is one example I love their Hells Lager and Pale Ale. They also still brew my beloved Mackeson though they don't advertise it. You are spot on about Camden Stout. It's OK but not up to much. I prefer Guinness Original - not Guinness Draft (not sold on any nitro beers to be honest) - and Black Sheep Milk Stout.
Whatever happened to Caffrey’s A bit off topic I know. At its launch Caffrey's was brewed to 5.2% ABV. In 2001 it was reduced to 4.2% and to 3.8% in 2010 in an attempt to halt declining sales.[4][5] It is based on an 1897 recipe and is designed to be served between 4 and 6 degrees Celsius.[5] Caffrey's was later launched in 14.9 oz cans, featuring a nitrogen pocket that agitates the beer when you open it giving it a characteristic closer to a draught beer. Nitrogen is less soluble than carbon dioxide, which allows the beer to be put under high pressure without making it fizzy. The high pressure of dissolved gas is required to enable very small bubbles to be formed by forcing the draught beer through fine holes in a plate in the tap, which causes the characteristic "surge" (the widget in cans and bottles achieves the same effect). The perceived smoothness of Caffrey's is due to its low level of carbon dioxide and the creaminess of the head caused by the very fine bubbles that arise from the use of nitrogen and the dispensing method described above. Brewery Thomas Caffrey first established the Ulster Brewery in Queen Street, Belfast, in 1897. The brewery was sold to the Ulster Brewing Company in 1950. The last member of the family to have been active in the business, Nicholas James Caffrey, died in 1984, survived by two daughters, Virginia and Bridget (since deceased) and one son, Nicholas Philip Caffrey. The brewery was acquired by Charringtons (later Bass Charrington) in 1964 and then by Interbrew in 2000. On July 6, 2004, the owners of the former Caffrey's brewery, Interbrew, announced their intention to dispose of the site of the brewery.[6] Having no takers, they closed the brewery in 2005. The Caffrey's Ulster Brewery, established in Belfast in 1897 and taken over by Bass in 1974, closed in 2004, so ending big company brewing in Northern Ireland.
Best stout I think is samuel smiths organic chocolate stout. Tried it in brudenall social club in leeds (famous small music venue). Was £3.60 for a 550ml bottle 5% abv and it was amazing however you can't get it in the shops, only in there pubs or online.
Had a couple last night, enjoyed it but I agree it's a bit thin on the mouthfeel, lot of the brewers now are purposely keeping the abv down. Black Heart stout is the best widely available. Cheers Simon 👍🍺
@kylereed9309 Yeah, their extra stout is great if you fancy a few because its a slightly lower ABV but the others are great all round I like them all they offer great quality and value for money

In pubs, my first drink is nearly always Guinness (outside of the summer). I tend to move on to something else unless the Guinness was a top tier one. I always try any other stouts on offer. Spotted some of this in Sainsbury's yesterday but didn't buy. Guinness draught from the can is meh, and thats generous. A foriegn extra or their porter from the bottle though 👌
I bought a 10 pack of these before Christmas, thought they were ok but wouldn't rush to buy them again. If I buy a smooth stout it will either be Guinness draught or Forged just a shame that one is only available in Asda its very good. Gutted when they stopped selling Murphys in the cans from UK supermarkets that beat them all. Heineken owns Murphys so I found that a rather odd decision by them. Considering the popular trend of releasing Guinness rivals now.
Still small in scale but Anspach & Hobday London Black have nailed it in my opinion. Still an easy drinking stout, but with bags more character than Guinness.
There’s no need to increase it to 5%; I believe it’s not designed for home drinking but rather tailored to compete with Guinness and appeal to Guinness draft drinkers. Making it stronger would deter customers, especially in pubs where it’s offered as the only stout option. The four packs are the same price as one pint in London, so in that sense it’s a steal. Considering its aim, they’ve done a decent job.
If thats the case then they are screwed, like Simon said why would a Guinness drinker move over to this stuff that’s so similar yet has none of the history and brand recognition that Guinness has.
They’re not aiming to topple or surpass Guinness; rather, they’re looking to carve out a portion of their market share. Guinness will likely remain the leaders in stouts indefinitely, while Camden’s stout might fade away in a few years. It’s purely a business move aimed at making money.
Perfectly drinkable, just not very interesting, lacks any complexity or character. I agree it needs to be at least 5 per cent. Not sure what the Widget is all about. ? reminds me of a can of John Smiths. Leaves you a bit disappointed like something is missing. 4/10
Guinness is good 😊 it's the bar's responsibility to maintain standards. Bad Guinness equals sub par bar in my opinion. Its not hard to keep your lines cleaned and flushed 🍻💯💚
Guinness is currently very on trend hence all these brewers trying to make copycat beers. Don’t think they can do anything to knock the Guinness brand off its perch though.
They wont knock the brand as that is what Diageo specialise in. They will certainly beat it in terms of quality. Guinness is fantastically well marketed bang average stout nowadays. Perhaps not this by the sound of it (I havent tried it yet to judge it myself) but plenty out there that taste far, far better.
This is the thing Guinness draught has its fanbase I personally love the stuff. It's not trying to be a craft stout at the end of the day. It's mass produced but does what it does very well.
Out of the stouts that are available in supermarkets, I think M&S's Irish Stout (Carlow/O'Hara's), Aldi's Coffee Stout and Black Sheep's Milk Stout are my favourite. Not tried Forged yet, as my Asda is the furthest away of all the supermarkets. Mid-tier ones would be bottled Guinness Original, Guinness West Indies Porter, Guiness Milk Stout, Brewdog's Black Heart and Brain's Dark. Bottom tier would be Mackleson Stout, Redstripe Dragon Stout, Guinness Draught and Guiness 0.0.
@@GunnerRDS finally tried Forged a couple of weeks ago and I was surprised how well it kept its head, it was like it was poured at pub. Taste wise I thought it was really good, though M&S's Irish Stout remains my favourite for taste.

I'm an Irish man, Guinness is my drink and it famously does not travel well. I've tried many stouts and I think they go the roasted, coffee or chocolate route which for me makes them all taste the same.
I havent had any of the irish mass produced beers in a long while as i mostly drink crafts, but i recently did a blind tasting of guinness and beamish stouts. I found guinness to be very bland compared to Beamish. Beamish was an absolute winner on all levels for me, and def with flavour. I had a can of beamish and camden the next night to compare, liked both but again found beamish to be better. Found beamish to be more bitter, roasty, coffee, and camden was less bitter and more of a chocolate flavour with a slight citrus note.
Guinness is genuinely better and more flavour. Guinness is fine for a cheapish sessionable beer. Prefer it to stouts with loads of sugar and additives shoved in

I had concerns when I tried this, I wasn’t happy but I received an email, and the tip was to crack open the can very very fast, faster than you did, and somehow it does something to the reaction and it makes a much thicker body pour, and the surge will take some time, not like what happened in this video.. try again 👍🏽
Good man. You’ve said exactly what I commented the other day when I saw you were going to review this. For me, it’s very thin and no body or mouth feel. Black Heart or even McGregor’s Forged Irish Stout knock socks off this. Camden are usually very good, but this is a definite miss for them.
There's a lot of oul flannel spouted about Guinness being better in Ireland. I've had excellent pints of Guinness in Zurich and Rome, every bit as good as any I've ever had in Ireland. In fact, the worst pint of it that I ever had was in Dublin Airport.
Guinness are massive, it will always be present on a supermarket shelf. Guinness draft in Ireland is first rate, in the UK its hard to find a decent pint of the stuff. I genuinely prefer Samuel Smiths Stout on draft, much better body feel, aroma and taste. Only Brewdog have produced a true competitor to Guinness in a can for me, Forged was far too thin.
Oh and you wrong, i would jump at a guiness like it was 30 years ago, god knows what they did to it. When I was in cork, i was drinking anything but guiness.
I wouldn't be surprised if Guinness have a look at thier old recipies and create a premium stout..... I think a few years ago they had a brewery project, reviving old recipies but they've all been discontinued This Camden one is very dark and creamy looking on the camera I'm surprised it's so thin on the taste 4% is too low, I think Guinness is a little higher ABV
Guinness draught is ok, like you say it’s not one that I buy. Degassed through the surger is ok Guinness Nitrosurge is much better for me. I do buy it. I tried Camden Town out of the can it was okay….. I thought when it was degassed and run through the surger thought it was a bit better, creamier but it was just a little disappointed with it, as you say it was trying to be Guinness. They need to push the boundaries to be better than Guinness with their product, not our equivalent to Guinness. I got 10 cans for £11 so it was a bit cheaper and I’ll get rid of them no problem. I might not have bought them at £6.50 for 4 cans. Was is better than Blackheart? Better than Forged? No. Beamish is still my favourite stout it challenges the nitrosurge for me. Glad you’re ’properly’ back and in good health. Look after yourself.
Just tried this it was 99p for a 440ml can a decent price. But it isn't anything special. I am not a big stout drinker, but the guinness draft cans are better than this.
You could see it was watery the way the head settled down quickly They all want a slice of Guinness’ market but here in Britain none of the pretenders measure up to the real thing
I was disappointed. Just too thin. I mean it may be personal taste but didn't have much flavor either. Maybe it's me, Nitro Stouts generally seem a tad unsatisfying
Its really poor. Shame because i was looking forward to it as i like camdens beer generally. It's the worst out of all the guinness wannabees. I commented sometime ago that stout will be the next big thing. Here it is
If you ever plan an Irish trip, make sure to try Beamish (best in Co. Cork) and Murphys stouts... Both fantastic stouts too

I prefer the dry stouts from the smaller independents here in Ireland
Oh and you wrong, i would jump at a guiness like it was 30 years ago, god knows what they did to it. When I was in cork, i was drinking anything but guiness.
Why not come to Dublin or Belfast and try a proper pint of Guinness, one made in a pub that takes pride in their pour
I would rather not support what was effectively a beer monopoly in most of Ireland for decades
Give me beamish any day. But yeah all tastes better in Ireland
I knew simon before he was cool ! 😎
He’s cool ?😂
I wouldn't be surprised if Guinness have a look at thier old recipies and create a premium stout..... I think a few years ago they had a brewery project, reviving old recipies but they've all been discontinued
This Camden one is very dark and creamy looking on the camera I'm surprised it's so thin on the taste
4% is too low, I think Guinness is a little higher ABV
Guinness draught is ok, like you say it’s not one that I buy. Degassed through the surger is ok
Guinness Nitrosurge is much better for me.
Dont hate me but I actually prefer the brewdog black heart to guiness these days
I got some cans today for 99 p each in home bargains
Saw it in Aldi but held off (£12 for 10? something like that). may still give it a go but there's good stouts out there. Shame. Thanks, Ian!
Please don't be put off Guinness from drinking a can or from draft in mainland UK... Come to Ireland, it might change your mind! 😊
Guinness is a lot like Greene King heavily acquired taste even among dry stout drinkers. It is a very acidic stout so it is a no from me.
Stout should need a knife and fork to drink it, thick creamy, like mackersons
Just tried this it was 99p for a 440ml can a decent price. But it isn't anything special. I am not a big stout drinker, but the guinness draft cans are better than this.
That to me is a carbon copy. Jet black heart is better as it has more roast to it.
Looks dam good
Stick to brewdog black heart a lot better stout
No
@@louisbeerreviews8964 better than guiness for sure, not tried camden yet. Sam smiths is the best english stout
You could see it was watery the way the head settled down quickly
They all want a slice of Guinness’ market but here in Britain none of the pretenders measure up to the real thing
Not keen on 4% stouts. Camden could have made it stronger to differentiate itself, instead of copying Guinness draught.
12 quid for 10 in Aldi and there's stacks of it
I was disappointed. Just too thin. I mean it may be personal taste but didn't have much flavor either.
Maybe it's me, Nitro Stouts generally seem a tad unsatisfying
Pretty much the only non-impy stout I’ll drink is London Black by Anspach & Hobday.
They need to be higher in abv to be satisfying I think
Come to Ireland and be impressed with the low 4’s to early 5’s dry stouts
Yes.....but it is nice
I think it’s thin taste wise but no much flavour it’s almost Guinness esq
Its really poor. Shame because i was looking forward to it as i like camdens beer generally. It's the worst out of all the guinness wannabees. I commented sometime ago that stout will be the next big thing. Here it is
Had a pint of this in Camden last night. Wasn't impressed, not much too it at all, no real depth of flavour.
Had one last night. Not impressed - as you say, very thin and it lacks flavour.
Funny how you always dis Guinness and stouts BUT highly rate Lidl and other cheap 50p ales 🤣🤣🤣🤣
It’s nice it’s not that thing
Phat Planet
watery as fuck
So mad that people enjoy something you don’t like. Get over yourself mate. Keep on though.
Craftless
bloody aweful stuff worsed stout Ive ever tasted sorry
