Who ever designed the 4.0 inline 6 must have sold their soul to the devil, because those things are a tank of an engine.
They are an old AMC engine
My 1999 Jeep Cherokee xj has almost 400,000 miles and is just like new.....One of the best vehicle's period..
Bob Quattrini that’s how my 99 grand Cherokee is
I have 1994 jeep Cherokee sport with straight 6 they are amazing 216,000 miles and still runs like it just came off the lot
4.0 straight six is simply amazing and POWERFUL AF. 505Performance in Arizona is getting 600+ HP. Check them out: They offer a 4.9 STROKER KIT at their store. Almost a 5 liter DAMNNN

These Pepboys brand integrations are a freaking work of advertising art.
Right! I was like this should be a commercial, a super bowl commercial
@@yarimapovedaalvarado it essentially is a low budget superbowl ad with lore. Tbh this shits gone too far every single time it's the same thing RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE
Edit: It was a good idea the first time, but it really feels like you guys are milking it and it literally hasn't changed so idk more inginuity?
Well, I guess Pep Boys keeps paying so Pumphrey has to keep pumping them out.
Agree. I think they should do (Up to Speed) on the Ford Focus, Chevrolet Silverado, Hyundai Genesis, Lexus IS200, Infiniti G35, RAM 1500, RWB and MAZDASPEED.
They executed it well the first time because it was so smooth it barely felt like an advert. But now it feels forced as fuck and as soon as he starts mentioning his training I can't help but go "oh here we fucking go again.."
I just picked up a lifted 91 Cherokee 4.0 4x4.... My first off-road vehicle and it's been a blast on the trail. Best $500 I've ever spent
500? Lol the sellers a dumass lol
The tires alone are more then 500
How many miles does it have
yeah, many junk yards or places that buy scrap metal will sell them for low prices.
I saw one labeled "bad transmission $200."
a friend picked it up and it ran for years but it never left those woods.
I had some spare honda parts lying around for sale and this guy didnt have money so he gave me his 6.5 inch lifted 89 cherokee nothing wrong except desth wobble it had 33 mickeys and some baller tires on it so basically 200$ for a cherokee in good condition (the rear brake line was cut so i swaooed the drums for disc and fixed up the brake lines but removed the e brake because those are over rated)
Here is why i am an xj fan:
-Exact same drivetrain as the tj but for about half the cost.
- extra doors for more passengers and more cargo space.
-numerous were sold, parts be mad cheap.
-loads of aftermarket offroad parts/kits are availible too, so you can build a crazy crawler, or mud monster, or just a simple overlanding build. Literally whatever you want.
-hella reliable
Exactly why it’s my dream car
XJ drivetrains are not the same. They're better.
29 spline 8.25>D35
HP D30> LP D30
AW4> 32Re
This is a true story.
And they look neat
XJ has more space regardless of 2 or 4 door.
Is that David Spade and Chris Farley at 1:48? *You guys at Donut are legends lol!*
Also " *AMC* checks under their couches" shows Andrew Lincoln/Rick Grimes
Comanche barely gets any love. COME ON
is that the old pick up
Off Brand Peach Rings The Cherokee pickup
I have one, I love it
Comanche still holds the land speed record in its class
Wanna talk about no love? My 83 J10 gets no love. People don’t even think it’s a Jeep..
woah woah woah you totally missed the 97+ refresh of the XJ... Kind of a huge deal for the XJ line as there were a lot of advancements that happened during its last 4 years of production....
Dakota Zimmerman what kind of advancements? In the market now and certainly curious lol
@@headlesnorseman701 too many to list everything here but highlights would be dual airbags, sleeker design, improvements to certain drivetrain components, OBD2, ECT. Find the wiki on Jeep XJ and it will run through most of the info from beginning to end of the XJ run. I'd recommend finding an internet forum for XJs to learn more details. Certainly one of the best vehicle platforms ever.
yeah this video was the BIGGEST disappointment.. coming from a 97 XJ owner. Like wtf, 97-01 are the best XJ's.
@@Michael-fi5rd I thought that with my 98 2dr but after doing a 97+ swap on a 90 MJ, own a 95XJ and a 92MJ, I actually prefer the HO Jeeps more. They just seem to work better and are a little more rugged feeling. 97+ is still great though.
Those heads love to crack tho!!
first two vehicles i ever owned were Cherokees, loved them! Still haven't forgiven Jeep for ditching the classic square headlights and grill, though.
I got a 98 and it’s one of the last years I would consider to be in the “real Jeep” category, it’s got that the IL6 4.0 and the damn thing just won’t die
@@mikeirl3565 why would you want it to die? 🤔
@@officialWWMWell of course I don't want it to die, but even if I did it wouldn't matter, not to be poetic, but the thing is built like a rock and runs like a river
@@mikeirl3565 why would 98 be the last year of a real jeep ? the XJ continued for a few more years. 2001 being the last. Then the 4.0 IL V6 continued for a few more years in the TJ. I could see saying 2006 would be one of the last years but dont know why 98... and thats if you dont consider the JK which is still just as capable with some modding.
I have a 1989 Comanche and it's incredible. The 4 liter straight six is the most reliable engine ever built! Three generations of my family and almost 300,000 miles later and it's still kicking.
Sean David Van de Riet my friend had one that was beat to hell, leaking everything, we kept taking it off-road, topping up the fluids all the time and it didn’t give a shit - donuts in the sand all day! 😃
Those inline sixes are pretty awesome. I've seen CR-V's with over 500,000kms on the original Honda B20z though.
W124 Mercedes with the 200/250/300D are also pretty much indestructible
My 87 comanche had the 4 banger and wouldnt die still arround i blew the 4 liter up in my 86 cherokee

Proud owner of a '97 Cherokee XJ, right here!
I don't recognize the liberty as a Cherokee in the same way my dad doesn't recognize me as his kid
the liberty is ifs lol its not even a jeep
I have a KJ, it's not bad. Alot of fun on the road cause of the IFS, but can easily be broken on hard trails.. damn control arma hang lower than me Balls. lol.
Not only the Liberty crossover (XJ was the last regular Cherokee SUV, after that they're crossovers to this day) was part of the Cherokee lineage, but it was called Cherokee overseas (let some of our overseas audience confirm you that). The 3.7L V6 that those Liberty had was not as good (but less fuel thirsty) as the I6's, but the (VM Motori 2.8L I4) CRD TD was even worse (that TD was put into overseas JK Wranglers).
The Liberty is the Cherokee in Europe i believe. I owned a 2012 Liberty KK and learned that they had em there marketed as a Cherokee KK
The Liberty did have a factory diesel option though, so that's always cool

The way you give us a crash course on the history of vehicles, makes me want to buy every vehicle you do a video on! You're awesome!
Great video but.... I feel you could have discussed the XJ CHEROKEE alot more. The grand cherokees are another group of a Cherokee
Old Cherokees>new cherokees
Bro you're EVERYWHERE
Sergio González Torres Oh easily. New cherokees are soccer mom-mobiles.
Rio Grande lol
How dare you even call those ugly new things a cherokee. A coworker has one those and I always feel the need to park my lifted 93 xj next to it. It just looks like a retooled grand cherokee. Just another cookie cutter crossover, and cherokee in name only.
@Cooper Pason psh ... at last years jeep invasion the only thing to get stuck on the beach track was new Cherokees
I love my 95 xj. Nothing beats it. With the seats folded it has the perfect amount of cargo space. Has been to hell and back off road. Great vehicle.
Owned a 1991 jeep Cherokee limited that thing started right up and ran after sitting for 5 years those old 4.0 I6's were beasts
The got a 98 that did the exact same thing, 400000+ miles and the damn thing just won’t die Lol
DONUT MEDIA GROWED SO FAST.. Like last year you guys only got 200k subs and NOW you got 1m subs.
OMFG im teary here😭😭
I had almost got dyslexia cause of that third "word" lol
This is what I look forward to every Thursday. I love these. Still surprised I haven't seen a Caddy on here tho 🤔
Love the shout out to the Comanche “it was pretty Sick”
I was never around many Jeeps, but after I bought my 1996 United States Forest Service retired Jeep Cherokee.. I was in love, lol. Only had 100,000 miles, It's been such an excellent vehicle. Just the usual maintenance breakdowns, never anything serious. That 4.0 is a beast of an engine. I live on the Washington coast, and drive it in the sand somewhat often. I've never been even close to getting stuck. (I got a set of Toyo 30" on her, and her name is Pistachio)
Pretty ballsy doing a video about cherokees sitting in front of a wrangler.
@Brady Burke I'm not a jeep expert, but I've owned 5 or 6 cherokees in my lifetime so far. But not one wrangler. They're kinda like a scrap metal box on wheels, with all the desirable features of just that.
John Dough But which is the scrap box? The Wrangler or the Cherokee? It wasn't clear which one you were referring to.
@@dickJohnsonpeter I found the wrangler owner, you guys!

230,000 miles and counting on my cherokee running strong. It truly was a triumph of automotive design. Absolutely spectacular vehicles. In 8 years it has literally never broken down on me. It needs repairs, but it has never has trouble driving itself to the parts store or the shop to get them done.
XJ Cherokee is the GOAT.
Which year is the best under 1997 idk im a kid but i lov cherokke xj
@@chEs9i my moms was i think a 1989 and she sold it because it kept braking down but it had around. From what i remember 4 to 500,000 miles and more accidents to the body then i can count. She now has a 2012 wrangler sahara
I own a '14 KL Trailhawk, which is probably up there in the most hated jeep categories. But I absolutely love it. Comfortable, beautiful pano sun roof, rear locker, 4low, skid plates, and I added Bilsteins, a lift, and AT3Ws. It's a blast at the sand dunes

Dave Painter that truck changed the game when it came to dropping big V8s in tiny trucks and going fast.
They shouldve put the S10 pickup in the Blazer video.
Failed to mention the 2015 Cherokees on how they were getting hacked all the time. Got mine brand new off the lot and we've been through 3 Transmissions already, seat heater caught the seat on fire twice in a week, stuck accelerator pedal, and the parking break turned on when I was driving 4 times. I blame Fiat
just started working on my late fathers 96 xj thats been sitting in my yard for TEN YEARS, so far I've replace gas tank/pump and it started right up, super easy to work on and great engine.
On my 4th jeep, and it’s my second XJ. You cannot deny how good of a car these things are. They just don’t die out, you can beat the hell out of a 4.0 and it will just keep running. Not to mention how good they are on the trail. Can’t tell you the amount of times I’ve seen a clapped XJ destroy a fully built wrangler on the trails.
You guys completely left out the AMC Eagle wagon which was the true predecessor of the XJ. Remember, FSJ continued production after the XJ was created. The Cherokee only adopted it's name.
6-12 year old me thought the Eagle was the coolest car

The axles in the WJ were made lighter for on road fuel economy using aluminum casings, however were still reliable off road since the axle shafts are held in by bearing retainer plates. The bearings are pressed on the shafts themselves, unlike a weaker C clip axle that can easily let the shafts slide out of the casing if the C clip breaks. That was a performance feature borrowed from Borg Warner, since Dana ended up buying out Borg Warner. That's something to be on the lookout for, between a Dana 44 and Dana 44A axle, the 44A is made out of aluminum and doesn't have the hole in the hub to remove the bearing retainer plates.
Picked up a '00 WJ for $600. 4.0 Inline 6 with the AT-5 5-speed transmission. 248k miles. A few sensors, an oil change, and new tires later, its in decent shape, and a great offroad and winter performer.

the xj was the first unitbody suv and the first coil sprung jeep. Im sorta disappointed about how much you left out about the xj and the fact that you included jeep grand cherokees. the 5.9 grand cherokee deserves its own video. the liberty is not a cherokee and its ifs
Tanner that's because they know nothing other than jdm cars
Actually the Liberty was called the Cherokee pretty much everywhere other than North America.
To be fair. The Cherokee is technically in its fifth gen with the KL. While they changed the name here in the states. They kept the Cherokee name on the global platform on the KJ and KK models. Which they called the liberty in the states.
I'm disappointed that they just closed over the KJ Liberty/Cherokee. They are far more capable off road then they get credit for and they reversed the slumping sales the Cherokee was experiencing given that by 2001 it was an ancient design that while popular with people that wanted to go off road was not making in roads with someone that wants a vehicle that is capable of handling rough terrain but is more comfortable on the road at the same time.
And has been started the Liberty is branded as the Cherokee everywhere but the US. The only reason it want here was the "purists" insisted the Cherokee would continue to sell and out sell the bee Liberty...need less to say the XJ Cherokee died the following year when its sales imploded.
