I absolutely loved how you said this was against religious extremists, not religion. I'm a Christian and love this show, its dark and funny. One of the best pairs tbh 💀
I mean Orel’s own faith isn’t really portrayed negatively, and even in the end he still had a crucifix above his mantle. The growth of his character wasn’t losing his faith but learning to better recognize the ways that the people around used faith in abusive ways.
One thing I noticed when watching Before Orel: Trust is just how terrified Clay really is to be a father. In it he acts arguably more unhinged than his season 3 counterpart and less like his season 1 and 2 self where he gives off the illusion of being calm and composed albeit wrong and abusive. There's subtle moments like him being nervous when Shapey is being born to him constantly trying to avoid talking to Orel, "Why should I try and teach that kid anything???!!!" He tries so desperately to avoid his responsibility as a father and you can tell it's bringing up alot of unresolved trauma as Bloberta mentions spanking. It isn't until we get his conversation with his father that we see the Clay we all know from season 1. After meeting Arthur again his actions become fuelled by hate and he's more assertive with Orel, before than he seemed genuinely afraid to be around him and even more so to act as a father to him. It really goes to show how fucked he is for how he deals with his feelings and yet in some ways those same feelings are probably almost relatable to people experiencing fatherhood for the first time. God he is just such an interesting little specimen love him or hate him you can't deny he is probably one of the best written villains out there.
The acting in the show is pretty damn terrific, as are the sound tracks and effects. All joking aside, there is little stopping anyone from re-enjoying every episode online.
The first season is what I've come to refer to as the Adult Swim Pilot Season, as in its an extremely exaggerated parody in order to get on the air to begin with. The first season is extremely exaggerated with its plots/characters and boils down to "Religion Bad" at points but then the series develops its footing. Same can be said for Venture Bros, where the first season is basically just a Johnny Quest parody until Season 2 when it becomes some of the best television ever aired
Yeah I didn't think about it until after I made this video but The Venture Bros. is a great comparison for a show with a decent first season that really ramps up in scope and quality in subsequent seasons. The first half of the first season of Bojack Horseman is kind of like that too.
This show was very depressing & deep and I am very glad that I never seen it as a child I truly loved the slow build to getting to clay's mental state & how the town uses religion as a weapon its also not a jab at religion, its a jab at how people use religion which is all the better
"Omnipresence" isn't the best episode but it does have one of my favorite lines in the show: "Proof proves nothing!" Honestly, I think there is another joke in "Numb" and that is that vibrators are sold at a hammer store (as "cylindrical devices.") Especially when you consider how that diesel-powered vibrator functions.
re: omnipresence, I’m personally really fond of Orel refusing the hot dog stand for not being good enough for God and going to a fancy restaurant only to end up ordering a hot dog there anyways
@@bunnyreviews9747 after thinking about it, I think I was a little too hard on Omnipresence. It's still my least favorite from season one but I think it only fails by comparison to the other episodes, not because it's a bad episode in itself. Elemental Orel, on the other hand, I think I was too easy on. The more I think about that episode the more it frustrates me.
To me, the singular part of "Numb" that's genuinely funny is the Nohammers Hardware gag. It's just so stupid and random and hilariously voice acted and I love it
i love how in the episode where all the residents try to avoid orel all together to avoid giving any advice he may misinterpret (i forget the name of the episode) coach stopframe literally could not give a fuck about what the others have decided and still talk to orel (even...if i remember correctly, he seems really disinterested and isnt paying much attention to what he or orel are saying)
I'd like to point out that episodes 3 and 4 establish a continuity between them. In "Waste", Orel's urine ends up giving the other kids a performance boost and became addictive, hence why Danielle wanted Orel to keep giving it to them. This is because Oral was flushing Crack from the last episode out of his system. Its little touches like these that make Moral Orel one of the most tightly written shows ever made.
I'm so happy people are still discovering the show. I was obsessed. I did use to have a list of all the episodes in chronological order, or at least what I determined was the chronological order.

I would say, one of Moral Orel's strengths, funny enough, is how short it is, and how enjoyable each episode is, even the dark ones. It set a benchmark for depth in animated writing. They do a lot of visual, as well as vocal storytelling. A lot of attention to detail in the set pieces and audio cues. Most importantly, though, the storytelling and ideas they represented. These ideas were ground in a grim, cruel, but very real truth that most shows fail to capture. It takes a genius to represent these ideas effectively while also being spectacularly humorous, especially at the time Morel Orel aired. It's one of the best examples of ideology in animation history, and it's surprisingly easy to view it online nowadays. Anyone who is too nervous to tackle a longer show like Bojack Horseman or Venture Brothers might want to consider Moral Orel first. It's by no means an entry level show, but...it's one you'll be glad you watched whether you were ready or not. It's teachings are valuable.
Personally for me i feel like "charity" is hilarious, the concept of sweet little orel thinking hes helping the poor by developing the addiction so twisted but enjoyable. And the episode really shows how little orels parents pay attention. but by far the best serious episode in my opinion is by far "The best christmas ever" it really shows how toxic clay and bloberta truely are for both eachother and by themselves. Where bloberta openly and shamelessly admits that shapey isnt clays son and clay just runs away from his issues and bloberta will simply abandon orel leaving him to only have trust in his faith in god in which he gets no answer

My God! I never thought I would get so emotional watching a review from an adult swim cartoon. Coming from a rough childhood, this show hits too close to home. Mastefrul analysis, I really like your style, pacing and overall points. Also the use of music is superb. Hope this blows up, more people deserve to see this!
5:37 imagine you’re a kid turning on the tv because you can’t sleep due to a nightmare waking you up. And having NEVER seen the show, see orals face staring down at you in the most scary way possible!!!! Oh I thought I was in still in my nightmare and that I didn’t wake up. It took me years to figure out what the show was even called and when I finally watched it and thankfully got past that part quickly, it’s been one of those shows that made me pause at how real it all felt considering they’re clay figures. What amazing writing.
so great to hear someone talk about this show !! its really my favorite piece of animation ever made. made me happy to hear you also found out about the mountain goats from this show. the soundtrack really went harder than it needed to
Amazing review of the show! Glad to see a good analysis of this show after deciding to rewatch it with friends. Dreaming for a comeback one of these days
I watched your videos about The Game Dude last year and entirely forgot about this channel, then my binge watching of Moral Orel videos lead me back here. I always love to see more people talking about Moral Orel.
You know at least 10 different people who have constructed fake families for themselves out of teddy bears? Or had out of body experiences making love to their rapists? I'm not trying to discount the experiences of victims of sexual assault, because obviously that happens. I do however think that Alone used the disconnect between reality and animation to heighten these scenarios, much like Numb did.
In retrospect, I respect your use of retrospect when you caused me to retroactivity speculate on my use of the words: *retro *retrospectively *speculate *spectate *respect and the phrase "retroactively respeculated by the spectacularly resplendent specacled spectators spectating the spectacle". Respect!
The music that play for each single episode really makes feel like we're going through a tunnel of creepypastas, but Moral Orel being more darker than that novel.
Im an open minded religious person and this show means so much to me and my personal growth. I adore this show and i rewatch it yearly, great analysis that feels very adjecent to my feelings.
as a Catholic who’s very religious, I absolutely love this show. I had a dream of the characters 2 days ago and spent an hour or so trying to remember the shows name and finally found it and got to rewatch it on HBO max after not watching it in 15 years. Mind you, I watched it for the first time when I was 6, had to have watched it out of order and hardly recognized anything that was said until they talked about God. A funny little cherry I want to applaud them for is their small punches at Catholics 😭😭 genius
The cancellation of Moral oral is, and i stand by that, the worst decision in television history. This was 2005. There was no Breaking Bad, there was no Bojack Horseman. Nothing delved into darkness like this. Thay had a Genre Pioniere on Theyr hand and where to cowardly to keep it.
@@diesemautokerl2181 its an Episode of Bojack horseman. important to know the first 2 Seasons are bad made under comedy Central. 3rd one startet being financed by Netflix and getting betting the 5th and 6th season are almost life changing in how deep they go. especially since the series looses almost all jokes starting at season 5 at that point it's really only a drama. The view from halfway down made me change my perception of death. it really is that powerful.
There are a lot of good things I could say about this video, but I'll just mention how much I like the music choices. Neverhood, Mad Monster Mansion, FF7 and it all fit with the clips being shown. Very nice.
i forgot to leave an actual comment. i just wanna say that i love your analysis of the episodes and your opinion summaries on the seasons. love how you write scripts, too! doesnt feel like a lot and it’s also great background noise when doing something. im a huge moral orel fan (a bit of a hyperfixation, lol), so this video was a great watch!
Funny story, I got intrested in this show when I was only 10, and the firsr episode I watched was the camping episodes... and they scared the hell out of me. I definitley picked the wrong episode to start on
Those unaired scripts in the description are AMAZING. And id recommend everyone read through them because the stories are great, id pay lots and lots of money to have Moral Orel revived (or resurrected) and continued the way it was planned to be because its genuinely so amazing and something I just think needs more to it.
So I wasn't crazy thinking I was hearing Ultimate Bowser's theme from mario 64 in the back of my head while you were talking about the grounded episode
Nice catch on maturity about Mrs. Bendy be called Mrs. Blinkless. I caught that too and always wondered if that was a mistake or just another character nurse that looked just like her. It's probably due to it being an earlier episode and them not having a solid name for her because she wasn't as prominent in the cast at that point.
As a person who is a catholic, the joke at 33:00 had me laughing my ass off. All the stuff about people in Moralton hating catholics was so funny to me, probably because the differences between the 2 religions is so small.
My take is that Morel Orel begins by giving the impression that it’s a satire/criticism on religious extremism and hyper conservatism. (It is of course) However, as the show goes on it’s clear that morel Orel is more of a commentary on the cycle of abuse and how miserable people will often outsource their misery to those around and harm others. Or they will internalize it and harm themselves. In an extremely restrictive community where any healthy support systems, coping mechanisms, and self exploration is seen as sinful, the characters seem to consistently self destruct or try to destroy others. The only character we see in the show who is interested in preventing the pain they experienced from hurting others and ending a cycle is Stephanie (when she was set on getting Orel to the dance). Another reason why she is such a breath of fresh air in the show.
Words can't describe how I felt during the course of the show Although Season 1 may have felt a bit basic, linear and even repetitive sometimes It was overall what I'd expected when going into this show for the first time(but I think you should rewatch it for reasons I'll get into later) But Season 2 felt like an over haul/improvement and it did a great job with introducing and bringing back various characters whilst also giving them a chance to develop in various episodes throughout the show And Season 3..... NOW THAT'S A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT EXPERIENCE ALL TOGETHER But it overall gives you a completely different perspective of the characters, especially when rewatching Season 1 and sometimes even Season 2 as well But overall Moral orel is a breathtaking experience that I would recommend to those interested in the genre
This may sound a bit silly but I would like to think that God is actually trying to help Orel, only in subtle ways but the most obvious being Bartholomew, a dog that's basically the second coming of Jesus.
My favorite epsiode is definitely Nature, and the continued chain of that part. Like how Clay shoots his son's legs to having the entire family falling apart. 😂😂 Its rhe funniest most relatable
Seems to me that Moral Orel is a lot like Pink Floyd's The Wall or Dark Side of the Moon. Great bits here and there, but when you see it as intended, as a whole, you realize you've found a masterpiece that you never knew was there
A big theme of the music in this video is that there's a lot of church music from various games. That's why I also used the church music from Banjo-Kazooie, Zelda, Silent Hill, Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, etc.
51:25 , they were originally going to rename it to " moralton " and expand on it in season 4 - 5 but it was canceled. I dont like that fact, as they entirely greenlit " alone " and easily couldnt have and let the show continue. Its a big part of the show, but it also shows adult swim mostly cares about the backlash they got.
This is what Stop frame does that's awful 1. Pretend to like Reberta and gets her pregnant so he can get closer to Clay. 2. Tries to sacrifice orel. That was really messed up. It's scary to know what lengths he was willing to go just to be with Clay
I don’t think it’s about people using religion to wrong ends. The comedy started by inverting expectations of a format. The change in the show is about people causing pain to themselves and each other by failing to be compassionate, patient, and loving with themselves and others posing an irony against the Christian church that ostensibly dominates the town which should be encouraging these in the people. Oral keeps his faith because ultimately he knows what God actually wants and recognizes his ability to emulate Christianity better than what the adults introduced. The loss of innocence is recognizing the adults he trusted are deeply fallible and maturity is his creating the life he always wanted.
I don't have time to watch the video just yet, but I will say that, before I watch, I feel like Holy Visage is an extremely important episode and gets underrated a bit, because it shows Orel questioning the total faithfulness he has to religion in order to help someone else- arguably for the first time, AND while still keeping his principles intact. Specifically putting the medicine closer to Doctor Chosenberg under the guise of putting the statue closer to him too. He saw that someone was in pain and suffering, and the obsession with the shape of the wound was making it worse, so he decided to go against the grain and assist Doctor Chosenberg when nobody else would. In general, I love how this show shows a lot of religious trauma being foisted on Orel from his parents and the town he grew up in, but in the end he doesn't just simply abandon Christianity- that would be a cheap way out. He realizes the version of Christianity he learned ended up being flawed in parts, and still believes in the faith, but in a way that more aligns with his own values rather than simply an intense fear of and submission to God like in Moralton. One of the biggest examples of how Moral Orel was not anti-religious, but was anti-extremism.
I'm not a big fan of Abstinence, it would probably be in the C Tier somewhere below Trigger. I'm not a big fan of any of the cut scripts if I'm being sincere. I think if they were all made, most of them would've been a blemish on the nearly perfect third season we got. Sad the show got cancelled, but I'm glad they cut the episode count back to 13.

It took me years to figure out what the show was even called and when I finally watched it and thankfully got past that part quickly, it’s been one of those shows that made me pause at how real it all felt considering they’re clay figures. What amazing writing.
You should have seen the deleted scene when he does that 💀
I just finished watching the series today and got this recommended to me. Love it!
Doctor Chosenberg was from Otherton, other town, so that's unfortunately likely why he's not in more episodes. I wish he'd been in more too.
so great to hear someone talk about this show !! its really my favorite piece of animation ever made. made me happy to hear you also found out about the mountain goats from this show. the soundtrack really went harder than it needed to
Amazing review of the show!
I recently got into this show and immediately loved it! I can't believe they canceled it 😑
i love how you say "alone" is over the top when i know at least 10 different people who have had similar experiences as the teacher and nurse bendy
I love these long form videos, gonna put it on while I play games
Your videos are always fantastic and I'm so excited about this one!!
In retrospect, I respect your use of retrospect when you caused me to retroactivity speculate on my use of the words:
*retro
*retrospectively
*speculate
*spectate
*respect
and the phrase "retroactively respeculated by the spectacularly resplendent specacled spectators
spectating the spectacle".
Respect!
i honestly couldn’t agree more with your ranking. This was a very insightful video
I really love the background music you used! Coincidentally, the organ music is used in one of myself favorite game series, Dragon Quest
Great music choices, can tell you're a gamer of taste. Instant subscription when I heard a neverhood track.
Bojack Horseman sucks, it's well made but is a completely stupid show
@@diesemautokerl2181 You obviously didn't see a view from halfway down. which is an undisputed masterpiece
@AntiFreak321 Nope but I've seen Bojack Horseman and it's terrible. Well made for the most part, but that doesn't make it good
@@diesemautokerl2181 its an Episode of Bojack horseman. important to know the first 2 Seasons are bad made under comedy Central. 3rd one startet being financed by Netflix and getting betting the 5th and 6th season are almost life changing in how deep they go.
especially since the series looses almost all jokes starting at season 5 at that point it's really only a drama.
The view from halfway down made me change my perception of death. it really is that powerful.
@@AntiFreak321 there's a 6th season? I assume it was the final
Dude, I love your use of FF music in this video. At first, I thought it was just 7, but now I'm hearing part 6 I think.
Wow I enjoyed this video, it randomly popped up on my recommendation so I'm sure it will do great 👍
There are a lot of good things I could say about this video, but I'll just mention how much I like the music choices. Neverhood, Mad Monster Mansion, FF7 and it all fit with the clips being shown. Very nice.
ur such an underrated youtuber!! this vid was rlly informative and nice to watch lol
i forgot to leave an actual comment. i just wanna say that i love your analysis of the episodes and your opinion summaries on the seasons. love how you write scripts, too! doesnt feel like a lot and it’s also great background noise when doing something. im a huge moral orel fan (a bit of a hyperfixation, lol), so this video was a great watch!
I’ve been fixating on moral Orel recently and this video is oddly fulfilling, so thanks lol
Orel's movie premiere is my favorite although it's just a recap. It's funny as hell.
I mean heck. Sorry God.
I literally watched this whole show on my day off in a hotel room. Shit got too real.
As a person who is a catholic, the joke at 33:00 had me laughing my ass off. All the stuff about people in Moralton hating catholics was so funny to me, probably because the differences between the 2 religions is so small.
I like the fancy font!
I sat through this it felt like 20 minutes not a hour something you did well!
Looooove the use of The Neverhood soundtrack. Nice touch!
loyalty gets so many bonus points from me solely because of those adorable little boys in the forest.
“you’re nice” **mwah**
For the episode Help, it’s so weird to see clay more straight edge, and how you and Saberspark puts it, they brought the worst out of each other.
What he said at 56:05 gave me chills
Moral Orel can only be appreciated in it's entirety. It's the greatest show ever.
Words can't describe how I felt during the course of the show
Although Season 1 may have felt a bit basic, linear and even repetitive sometimes
It was overall what I'd expected when going into this show for the first time(but I think you should rewatch it for reasons I'll get into later)
But Season 2 felt like an over haul/improvement and it did a great job with introducing and bringing back various characters whilst also giving them a chance to develop in various episodes throughout the show
And Season 3.....
NOW THAT'S A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT EXPERIENCE ALL TOGETHER
But it overall gives you a completely different perspective of the characters, especially when rewatching Season 1 and sometimes even Season 2 as well
But overall Moral orel is a breathtaking experience that I would recommend to those interested in the genre
Love is one of my favorite episodes. it's so upsetting, but so sweet too.
this is so well done! it’s great to see moral orel become more popular :)
38:14 I think you've got the episodes in reverse order.
Didn't came here expecting to hear music from super star saga, but what a pleasant surprise!
One of my favorite lines in the show is when the gym coach asks Orel in the finale "Your mom likes your dad?"
what's with the door knock at 31:35?
This show brings me a weird but pleasant comfort
Joe sister is a vary underrated character
This may sound a bit silly but I would like to think that God is actually trying to help Orel, only in subtle ways but the most obvious being Bartholomew, a dog that's basically the second coming of Jesus.
0:22
HOLY SHIT HE PRONOUNCED IT RIGHT!!!
This has got to be a parody of the 60s animation show Davey and Goliath.
Moral Oral looks exactly like Davey.
29:50 always reminds me of Homer the Genius where he disproved god and Flanders just said lets burn it before anyone sees this
My favorite epsiode is definitely Nature, and the continued chain of that part. Like how Clay shoots his son's legs to having the entire family falling apart. 😂😂 Its rhe funniest most relatable
am i schizophrenic or is there a knocking sound at 31:35
Seems to me that Moral Orel is a lot like Pink Floyd's The Wall or Dark Side of the Moon. Great bits here and there, but when you see it as intended, as a whole, you realize you've found a masterpiece that you never knew was there
36:06 Why is the background music the church theme from The Secret of Monkey Island?
A big theme of the music in this video is that there's a lot of church music from various games. That's why I also used the church music from Banjo-Kazooie, Zelda, Silent Hill, Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, etc.
@@okfinebethatway That's really clever! I guess I didn't notice because I haven't played any of those other games haha!
12:40 oh my god get it out of my head
I uh… Think you forgot about something in gods chef
I just got done with the show and it really has to be one of my favorite shows out there
This is what Stop frame does that's awful
1. Pretend to like Reberta and gets her pregnant so he can get closer to Clay.
2. Tries to sacrifice orel. That was really messed up. It's scary to know what lengths he was willing to go just to be with Clay
12:39 HES LIVING WHERE
47:54 can i know the music that you used for this?? it sounds so spacey
I Still Love You from Doki Doki Literature Club.
39:09 "shape and blocky"
@@otaku_r0xnne883 lol I didn't notice that until you pointed it out now! That's funny, thanks.
bruh what was this knocking 31:34 ???
Lol that was my brother knocking at my bedroom. I didn't hear it when I was recording but it's a lot louder in retrospect.
I get this idea that they were going to model iggy pops face in claymation so it’d look like stop motion Jesus
Someone knock at your door? 31:32 lol
Dumb is my favorite episode and it’s not just because Ms. Secondopinionson is my favorite character 🌝
I think one detail about the dog you might have missed is that the dog is Jesus
I think a very good show, and although I thought I had seen all of them, there must be a few I haven't seen. Thanks

Your narration definitely reminds me of Blameitonjorge
I take that as a compliment so thanks!
