    I made a similar skirt last year. The biggest difference is I pinked and zigzag all edges to cut down fraying. I used 6 strand braided yarn for tie instead of elastic. Yours very pretty, but so is mine. I used all thrifted fabric. My fabric formula was 10” squares. Top level 6 squares. 2nd level 12. 3rd level 24. 4th level 48 squares

I made a beautiful 4 tiered ankle length skirt using a pretty blue and white floral sheet and a gorgeous lace bedskirt edge. I had the use of a serger to clean up my seams and topstitched each layer. Yes, I did not see the need to close it as I do not do cartwheels any more at my age. haha. If you want the pocket closed at the top, you can either sew it closed, or move it higher in the skirt where it will be caught in the wasitband seam. Thanks for the great question! ~Deborah

    I’m a novice, and this will be my first patchwork/tier skirt 😊. Question: when pinning T3 to T2 (and then T4 to T3), do you still just fold the tier in half and then half again? With those tiers doubling in length, you’d have a lot more length between pins and I’m afraid I’d not space my gathers evenly… Will I need to pin more in these longer tiers? I I’m I I overthinking this?
    I really like how you explain things in your video- it gives me confidence to try this! 😊

    • @piecesofthepast
      @piecesofthepast  Місяць тому

      Yes, you have the right idea. You can put as many or as few panels in each tier you want to make the skirt more or less full. To get the tiers to distribute evenly, just fold them in half and mark. You can keep folding each tier in half and marking, then match up your marks. That way you only have to work on distributing the fabric within each pinned section before moving to the next one. Don't be afraid to wing it on the pleating (gathers). I am never precise on them and you really can't tell. The more you practice, the easier it is to eyeball the gathers. Have fun with it and thanks for watching! ~Deborah

    Best place to get fabric cheap is Thrift stores - I frequent my local Salvation Army and Goodwill for fabric - sheets, curtains, etc - anything that is in good condition and 100% cotton, I take it home, wash it and put it in my stash so when I want to make something I just pull from that. A large sheet can give you about 4 yards or so of fabric for a couple bucks.

    I have just made the 3 tier skirt. I really like the simplicity of it but I am a 5ft woman and this is really the first item of clothing I have made. I lack the know how to determine appropriate length=. I found this 3 tier in between for me in terms of too short to be full length and too long to be below knee or mid shin. Any suggestions on what I should cut future squares as? Thank you for this video, it was so helpful and gave me confidence to try!

    • @piecesofthepast
      @piecesofthepast  8 місяців тому +1

      Congratulations on making your first! To make the 3 tier longer, try adding a set amount of length to your blocks. For example, add an inch of length to your blocks. This will make them rectangles, instead of squares, but just be sure to sew the long sides together to make the tiers and this will make the skirt about 2.5-3" longer for you. You can add or subtract any number you like. Hope that makes sense. So glad you tried it! Thanks for the awesome comment! ~Deborah

    • @sweetpea5539
      @sweetpea5539 8 місяців тому +1

      Sounds like you should lengthen your squares. If three tiers is too short, determine how much longer you would like the skirt. Let’s just say you want a three tiered skirt to be 6” longer without adding a fourth tier. That would mean tiers 1-2-3 need 2 additional inches each. You would make your squares 10”x12” instead.
